In the Words of St. Francis… “Blessed is that servant who is no more puffed up because of the good which the Lord says and works through him than for what He says and does through others. That man sins who wishes to receive from his neighbor more than he is willing to give of himself to the Lord.”

The Bells are still ringing in Assisi It amazes me that the bells still ring in and around Assisi. One begins and others follow. They call people to prayer and raise an awareness that despite deserted streets and frightening news reports about the Coronavirus, life and faith does go on here in the land in which I am living. I continue to study the life of St. Francis and find more inspiration in what I am reading than I have before. Is it because my mind and heart are more open to what he stood for, preached about and lived for? Simply put, Francis lived for God and that was enough and sufficient for his life. Are we not called to do the same in our everyday world? Are the bells still ringing in our hearts anywhere we can be? I pray it is so and it is my greatest hope for the communities I am assigned to serve, my family and for the new friends I have met and associate with while here in Assisi. I am surrounded by the bells of San Rufino, the Cathedral of Assisi, and the bells of the Basilica of St. Clare, and of course, the Church of Minerva, in the piazza outside our balcony, and the “New Church” built over the childhood home of St. Francis which which is just steps from our apartment to the South. At certain times during the day all the bells ring at the same time as if it were a dem-onstration of 360 degrees surround sound. And what does it mean to hear the bells? It means faith is still alive and the sounds of the bells serve as a constant invitation for people to gather in their faith. A few weeks ago, I attended a Saturday night rosary candlelit service at the Basilica of St. Mary of the Angels in the valley below. It began at 9:15 p.m. and when the gates to the Church opened at 9:00 p.m. there were about twenty-five of us standing there. How-ever, when the service began, I would guess that there were about 1,500 people, standing room only! All were given a candle to be lit at the end of recitation of the rosary, songs and prayers. We arrived early enough to get a seat in front of the small parish church called “the Portiuncula” which still stands in the middle of the Basilica. This is where St. Francis worshiped with his small community and prayed the rosary himself. A beautiful golden statue of the Blessed Virgin Mary stood to the side on a platform that would later be picked up by about twelve volunteers and carried out of the Ba-silica in procession followed by all of us with lit candles. Songs and prayers and what sounded like the Litany of Mary was recited. At various intervals candles were raised and people would sing “Ave, Ave, Maria…” I don’t know the rest of the words. It was glorious and I realized that most of these people were not tourists but local citizens. Last Saturday, I was invited by one of my American friends here who sings in the Cathedral Choir to come to a rosary service at 9:00 p.m. at the Cathedral of San Rufino, a short walk (all uphill!). I huffed and puffed my way up to the piazza and entered the sacred space. There were many less people, but the service was beautiful and inspiring. The bells rung again and again. At the end, I stopped at the Baptismal font where St. Francis and St. Clare were baptized over 800 years earlier and realized their Baptism connects me to the Faith they lived as it does for each of us. I said a prayer for all, back home, and left for the trip down the hill back to the apartment. The next day, we had a luncheon in our apartment for the Eng-lish-speaking community, after Mass at the Basilica of St. Francis. Eleven arrived at 1:00 p.m. and left at 6:30 p.m. Dan made stuffed cabbage rolls and all the other dishes were brought by the guests. It is our weekly potluck and usually held in one place, however, Dan and I wanted to host at least one Sunday meal before we leave this apartment again in less than a month on April 6. We see very little evidence of a Coronavirus around us. I am

saddened for the businesses who have no customers because so many have cancelled travel plans. Despite disappointments, they greet us warmly and hope for the best. The piazza is empty of tourists, but the locals still gather for coffee and conversation. We watch from the French doors inside our apartment and laugh at the gestures and simple events still going on as the “bells of Assisi still ring” and life goes on. For St. Francis and for us, the beauty of God’s creation is still surrounding us. Trees are in bloom, beautiful flowers fill the window boxes or outside the small homes and people gather to honor the Blessed Virgin Mary and the “bells of Assisi” continue to ring loud and clear in our hearts. The sound is glorious and so is our Catholic tradition and our Catholic Faith. God bless you. Stay well and know we are just fine here in Assisi. “Ciao for now!”

IMPORTANT NOTICE Until further notice, there will be no Pre-cious Blood or the Sign of Peace at Mass. There are also several Bishops who are suggesting that communicants receive Communion in the hand to prevent further spread of the virus. Eucharistic Ministers should take care to sani-tize their hands before and after distributing Holy Communion. Thank you.

vocation view—A surprise encounter can turn our lives around. God offers us living water. Come and drink. (John 4:5-42)

Reading I : Exodus 17:3-7Is the Lord in our midst or not?• In the Exodus reading, the Israelites grumble about

their experience in the desert.• Their thirst represents Israel’s real question, “Why

did God make us leave Egypt?”• Yahweh responds graciously to the needs of the

people.

Reading II : Romans 5:1-2, 5-8We are at peace with God through Christ.• The wonder of God’s free gift of salvation in Jesus

is subject of the passage from Paul’s Letter to the Romans.

• God responds to our need with compassion and mercy.

• God’s love is poured out in our hearts through the Holy Spirit.

Gospel : John 4:5-42Whoever drinks the water I give, will never thirst

again.• In the story of the Samaritan woman, Jesus uses

water as a symbol of God’s revelation and God’s Spirit.

• The exchange between Jesus and the woman causes conversion to take place.

• The woman identifies Jesus several times, each time with greater understanding. First, he was a Jew-ish man, then a prophet, and finally she makes a comment about the Messiah.

STEWARDSHIP REFLECTION Today’s readings on this third Sunday of Lent present us with the theme of “thirst” and show us that a stewardship way of life can both satisfy our spiritual thirst for Christ and help us to satisfy Christ’s thirst for souls. Our first reading, from the book of Exodus, begins with the words, “In their thirst for water, the people grumbled against Mo-ses.” What little faith and lack of trust they show after all God has done to free them from slavery. But Moses cried out to God for help, and sure enough God provided generously to satisfy thirst. He continues to provide generously for us these many centuries later. Our Gospel passage from John recounts the life-changing encounter Christ has with the Samaritan woman at the well be-ginning with His words to her, “Give me a drink.” Then, He adds, “If you knew the gift of God and who is saying to you, ‘Give me a drink,’ you would have asked him and he would

Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament! Giving thanks to our God . . .Do we understand the purpose of Perpetual Eucharistic Adoration in our parish and the value, need and importance of spending one hour each week in prayer with Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament? A true Christian is one who believes that Jesus is alive today in the Blessed Sacrament, living, dwelling and called us to Himself. Would you please pray a ‘Hail Mary’ that all may respond to the invitation of perpetual adoration of the Blessed Sacrament? This is simply a matter of putting our faith into action. This is needed now more than ever! We believe as Catholics that Jesus loves us so much that He dwells with us day and night in the Blessed Sacrament. Perpetual adoration is simply our response to His love whereby each of us is willing to spend a quiet holy hour of prayer in His Eucharistic Presence once a week on a regular basis that we may have perpetual exposition of the Blessed Sacrament. All the hours are organized in such a way that each hour is covered by at least one or two of us, so that Jesus is never left alone, and the chapel is always open for anyone who may want to visit Him. Jesus tells us how important this is in His Eucharistic discourse:“Indeed, this is the will of My Father, that everyone who looks upon the Son and believes in Him shall have eternal life. Him I will raise up on the last day” John 6:40. Perpetual exposition is our profession of faith as a people of God, as a Eucharistic parish, that we truly believe that Jesus is here, that He is welcomed, loved and adored by us. Each time we visit Jesus in the Eucharist we enrich our spiritual life. Each moment we look upon the Blessed Sacrament with faith, He raises us up into deeper union with Himself and will make our souls everlastingly more glorious in heaven; for union with Jesus is our calling and vocation in life and our eternal happiness forever in heaven.**There are 168 hours in one week / 120 hours Mon-Fri. We have 334 families registered at St. Anthony Parish, 56 at St. Paul Parish and 31 at St. Katherine Parish, totaling 421 families. Don’t you believe 168 hours could be filled each week!!! Will you commit to spend an hour with our Lord? As of now, there are 52 families committed to 36 hours of adoration -- Jesus is seeking and calling more of His families!

have given you living water.” Christ is speaking the very same words to us to us today. These two verses encapsulate the call to stewardship. Christ asks us to “give him a drink” by sharing what we have with Him and with others for His sake. Yet, it is Christ Himself who provides the water — the living water that is His grace. God has chosen to include us in His plan for bringing all people to salvation through Him. We live out our part in His plan through a steward-ship way of life. This Lent, let us resolve to respond to His call with passion and commitment. Let us do our part to quench His thirst.
