Parks and RecreationParks

Patterson Park: Often referred to as “Baltimore’s best backyard,” the

residents of southeast Baltimore use it for just that. Jogging, dog-walking,

frisbee-playing, fishing, sledding, bird-watching and slack-lining are a few of

the activities that occur in the park on any given day. The audubon Society

offers programs for all ages, from Tiny Tot Safari, which teaches preschoolers

about the nature all around them, to a monthly bird-watching walk for all

ages. The Friends of Patterson Park serve as stewards and advocates for the

park. Patterson Park is the huge green expanse extending from Patterson

Park ave. to Ellwood ave., east to west, and from Baltimore St. to Eastern

ave., north to south. For more information, check pattersonpark.com or call

the Friends of Patterson Park at 410-276-3676.

Thames Street Park: a great place to take the kids after school to burn

a little more energy, Thames Street Park, located in Fell’s Point at Wolfe and

Thames streets, offers green space and a playground suitable for young

children, with slides, platforms and monkey bars. a major renovation

is being planned that will upgrade the park and make the equipment

handicapped-accessible. For more information, visit thamesstreetpark.org.

Halcott Square: adults and kids alike enjoy this pocket-park filled with

lush greenery. Named for Charles Halcott, who spearheaded the effort to

preserve it, the park was once the site of seven row houses. Located on the

100 block of S. Duncan St., Halcott Square is a popular summer gathering

space for adults bearing white wine and kids with their tricycles. The

greenery keeps the little space a few degrees cooler than the surrounding

asphalt jungle.

Dypski Park: This little playground is located on the 1200 block of S.

Ellwood ave., directly behind Coppermine Field House at Clarence “Du”

Burns arena. Featuring playground equipment for the little ones, a plan to

install a “splash pad” for wet summer play was announced last year.

Canton Waterfront Park: Between Boston ave. and the water, from

Potomac St. to East ave., the Canton Waterfront Park allows residents to

relax, fish and recreate at the water’s edge. The park is also now the home

of WTMD’s First Thursdays summer concert series. With walking paths, one

of the best views of the harbor, benches and green space, the park has

something for everyone.

Recreation

Virginia Baker Recreation Center: Located at 2601 E. Baltimore St.,

on the north side of Patterson Park, offers a variety of activities to kids and

teens including homework hour, sports and more. Call the rec center at 410-

396-9156 for more information, or visit bcrp.baltimorecity.gov/recreation/

bcrprecreationcenters.aspx.

Ice Skating: The Dominic “Mimi” DiPietro Family Skating Center offers ice

skating during the colder months. The center, located at 200 S. Linwood ave.

in Patterson Park, offers family skating on Tuesday and Thursday, 11 a.m.-2

p.m.; Friday, 7-9 p.m.; Saturday, 3-5 p.m. and 7-9 p.m.; and Sunday, 3-5 p.m. For

more information, call 410-396-9392 or email [email protected].

Swimming: The Patterson Park pool is located at 148 S. Linwood ave., in

Patterson Park. The outdoor pool is open to the public in summer months. For

more information, check pattersonpark.com.

Social Sports: The Baltimore Sports and Social Club offers a variety of

sports for a variety of abilities and interests. They play in Patterson Park, and

There are two collection days for each residential address, and workers collect trash and garbage on one day of the week, mixed recycling on another. Trash and garbage must be stored in a can with a tight-fitting lid; failure to use a can with a lid will result in a fine. Trash and recycling should be set out for pickup by 6 a.m. on the collection day.

On THE COVER: Canton Waterfront Park at dusk by Gregory McKay.Greg is a resident of Upper Fell’s and a first year MD-PhD student at Johns Hopkins whose once hobby has developed into a professional passion. His work can be viewed at Beauty of Baltimore www.facebook.com/Gregor yM cK ayPhotography, and prints are available at www.gregorymckayphotography.com.

This is Baltimore – southeast Baltimore, to be specific.Baltimore is a winning combination of diverse neighborhoods, creative residents, unique businesses, a wide variety of entertainment options, and a communal love for the city that is only matched by our passion for the Ravens and a good batch of steamed crabs.

The “charm” in our nickname “Charm City” is not undeserved.

Whether you’re a new resident or have lived here for decades, there’s always something fun to discover. It can be a new restaurant with unique fare or a scenic spot along the waterfront to watch the sunset. There’s always a surprise around every corner, you just have to explore.

We have both the exciting nightlife of Fell’s Point and O’Donnell Square, and the calming natural tranquility of Patterson Park. For every trendy gourmet bistro that has opened, there’s a classic neighborhood joint that has been around for nearly half a century. On one block you’ll find new families and college graduates as well as seniors who have lived on the same street since birth. Our festivals, concerts, block parties, neighborhood clean-ups, art exhibitions and community meetings will always give you something to do. If you’re bored in Baltimore, you’re not doing it right.

In this midst of the hardships we may have faced this year, we have persevered and grown stronger and more connected because of it. There’s a special sense of pride that each Baltimorean has in their city, and it will rub off on you. We work together, both as neighbors and as friends, to make Baltimore better.

Inside Our Baltimore is a comprehensive list of all the places to visit, worship, eat, hang out, work out, and much more. It can seem like a lot to take in, but hopefully, this go-to reference guide will give you the information you need to enjoy our great city.

If you have any further questions, just take a walk around the block. There will be plenty of friendly neighbors happy to help you.

Baltimore’s public library system is the Enoch Pratt Free Library, one of the oldest in the nation, founded by industrialist Enoch Pratt in 1884. Pratt’s first branch opened in Canton in 1886; the branch, which sits in the middle of O’Donnell Street at Ellwood avenue, is the only one of Pratt’s four original branches still operating; it is currently receiving an historically accurate renovation.all Enoch Pratt Free Library branches offer public computers, free wi-fi (ByO laptop or smartphone) and programs for adults, children and teens. Many branches offer bilingual programs. Southeast anchor Library, Orleans Street and Central Library offer free computer classes. Each year, the library hosts about 100 authors at its 21 branches and Central Library.

Southeast Baltimore has always had a diverse population. as a result of being such a delicious melting pot, the community offers a smorgasbord of dining options that can satisfy any craving. From fine dining to diners, bistro to bars, taverns to food trucks, we have it all.

you can choose between tacos at Tortilleria Sinaloa (1716 Eastern ave.), chili dogs at G&a Restaurant (3802 Eastern ave.), gelato at Pitango (802 S. Broadway), and brick-oven pizza at Johnny Rad’s (2108 Eastern ave).

Langermann’s (2400 Boston St.) and Iron Rooster (3721 Boston St.) have brunch menus that have topped many a “Top Ten” list.

Hoehn’s Bakery (400 S. Conkling St.) serves up chocolate eclairs, and Piedigrotta Bakery (1300 Bank St.) an acclaimed tiramisu. If you want something lighter, visit Nalley Fresh (2400 Boston St.) or Liquid Earth (1626 aliceanna St.) for fresh salads and vegetarian options.

Last year, we saw the opening of Mayuree Thai Tavern (2318 Fleet St.), which had neighbors raving about their popular drunken noodles, and alma Cocina Latina (2400 Boston St.), awed with Latin-inspired specialties like arepas and ceviche.

If it’s seafood you’re craving visit Captain James Landing (2127 Boston St.), Mama’s on the Half Shell (2901 O’Donnell St.) or the ever-popular Thames St. Oyster House (1728 Thames St.).

It’s safe to say Baltimore has a rich culinary landscape. Meals made authentically and with care, can transport you to another country without you ever having to book a plane ticket. However, if you’re looking for something for more down-home good-ol-american, there’s plenty of places to nosh on some wings, burgers, and have a brew or two, like Kislings (2100 Fleet St.) and Pig and Rooster (3242 Foster ave.).

To wash down these delectable dishes, we have a thriving bar scene. From a classic ice-cold Natty Boh to handmade artisan cocktails, area favorites include Mahaffey’s (2706 Dillon St.) and Of Love and Regret (1028 S. Conkling S.)

Now if your stomach is growling and mouth is watering, but you don’t feel like changing out of your pajamas, Baltimore has multiple services and apps, such as OrderUp and Galley, that will deliver food straight to your door.

Baltimore is the city that eats, so bon appetit!

With all the farmers markets in Baltimore, you would think there was a thousand-acre crop just behind that line of rowhomes. The fact is, there is a multitude of farmers from the county and beyond who are eager to put their wares before Charm City denizens, hungry for a bite of nature’s goodness. From produce to meats, and all kinds of other things--breakfast sandwiches, coffee, crafts, live music--our farmers markets have it all.
