Converting Food To Fuel We’re all eating food, but the million dollar question is, are we able to convert that food into fuel efficiently and effectively?

The answer for an adrenally-fatigued, thyroid-and-nervous-system compromised person is no.

Eating and converting our food into fuel or energy are not mutually exclusive things. 80% of our society is not able to fully convert their food into fuel.

Our Six-Pillar Clinical Strategy When we’re stressed, we release adrenaline (stress hormone), whose job is to mobilize energy (in the form of glycogen via the liver and muscle tissue).

When there’s no available energy reserve, the body begins releasing excess cortisol to begin breaking protein into fatty acids to be converted to glucose for energy.

This is a stress-adaptive, normal survival mechanism.

Problems start when this becomes a day-to-day function because the only way the body is able to use fat and protein as energy is through the release of stress hormones, keeping you locked in a vicious cycle of chronic breakdown and inflammation because the only way we can break down tissue is in an inflammatory state.

Our Six-Pillar strategy below is specifically designed to break this cycle so that you can begin to feel better and climb out of this compromised state and into a happy, energetic, optimistic future.

People with low adrenal and thyroid function (a.k.a. Energy systems) cannot store adequate energy in the form of glycogen in the liver and muscles, which means they cannot regulate blood sugar throughout the day, which means they are stuck in a chronic state of stress.

Therefore, a very important step you’ll be taking in creating or restoring harmony and balance to your nervous system and the function of your adrenal and thyroid glands is to maintain your blood sugar, many of you perhaps for the first time.

Our goal is to stop the cycle of you living off stress hormones and to instead consistently send the message to your body that it is SAFE so that it can finally relax and heal. Eating protein, carbohydrates and fat with each meal will fulfill the needs of your cells to function optimally, create safety, and revive your metabolism.

The number of times you eat during the day (combined with our food as medicine strategy) will help solve the cell-starvation syndrome, that keeps you locked into a fight-or-flight

stress response and adrenal fatigue. This is commonly also known as “hanger” (=when you are hungry you also get irritable or even angry)

Plan to eat every 2-4 hours [depending on your Tier] for the next two months to help replenish your fuel tank and decrease your stress hormones.

Eventually, over time, after you’ve stabilized your blood sugar you’ll be able to go longer between meals without causing your blood sugar to crash. This is a sign that great healing is taking place and your plan is working.

Please note that we are not dramatically increasing the amount of food you are eating, we are staging it out roughly six times throughout the day for yourself with our help.

Pillar 3: Fruit (& Root) Sugar to Build Resilience The immediate antidote to stress is sugar (cake, candy, or alcohol cravings) along with a little salt (pass the chips, please) which is why these are the two biggest cravings and also why sugar is the #1 food addiction.

We all just want to feel GOOD so we reach for the fastest thing to make that happen. We want to breathe a sigh of relief and finally feel energetic, happy, and relaxed at the same time.

By eating fruit and root sugar the way we outline (along with protein and fat as we discuss below), you will decrease the stress hormones in your system and increase thyroid hormone, breaking the cycle and helping you to FEEL the way you want to feel while also healing both your thyroid and adrenals.

Pillar 4: Targeted Use of Saturated Fat to Protect the Nervous System The fourth pillar of our clinical strategy within the Adrenal ReCode is to use specific saturated fats to heal and protect your nervous system so that it can recover from past trauma and be insulated against future trauma.

You now understand the importance of your fat soluble vitamins we mentioned above to provide protection and rejuvenation to your nerve cells.

Much of your fat in this program will come from saturated fat and that is not something to be afraid of.

Your body’s cells prefer 50% of the fat you eat to come from saturated fat, 45% from monounsaturated and only 5% from polyunsaturated fat.

The Adrenal ReCode saturated fats are used strategically to protect your fragile cells from any kind of toxic invasion while you are healing.

Think of it like the enamel on your teeth.

If you have gaps in that enamel (polyunsaturated fat), then you are susceptible to cavities, whereas strong enamel prevents cavities.

All molecules are made of carbon and hydrogen. Saturated fat molecules have hydrogen attached everywhere whereas unsaturated fat molecules (mono and polyunsaturated fat) do not.

When healing from adrenal fatigue and nervous system dysfunction, the consumption of healthy saturated fats in proper amounts creates stability (less oxidation, less free radicals) and more energy production and function.

The diagrams below show the difference between a saturated fat molecule and the two types of unsaturated fat molecules (mono and polyunsaturated fat) to help you understand why monounsaturated fat molecules are healthier for you than polyunsaturated molecules and how an over-emphasis on nuts and seeds can contribute to thyroid disorder and adrenal fatigue.

Saturated Fats Include: Animal protein, coconut oil, whole milk dairy, butter, cheese, lard, cream, tallow

Monounsaturated Fats Include: Avocado, avocado oil, olives, and olive oil.

Polyunsaturated Fats Include: Plants and plant-based oils such as soybean, corn and sunflower oil, many nuts, all seeds and their oils including flax, chia, walnut, as well as salmon and other fattier fish. The latter are healthy foods inherently in the right balance with proper metabolic carbohydrates.

Pillar 5: Customized Macronutrient Ratios & Real-Time Assessments

The right amount of protein, carbohydrates, and fat [=macronutrient ratio] based upon your body’s own feedback will put you in “the healing zone” with each meal.

You’ll discover your unique ‘healing zone’ when we show you how to start logging your temperature, pulse, breathing, food, and activity in Module 2, so don’t worry about figuring it out in now.

What we do what you to understand now is that when your body temperature is consistently low, you are locked in an inflammatory cycle and in order to control inflammation, the body releases cortisol. This keeps your nervous system in the fight-flight-or-freeze mode which is toxic and keeps you stuck in adrenal fatigue and cell starvation (oops, hangry again) which is awful for the thyroid.

Slowly increasing your carbohydrate intake over time to be greater than your fat and protein intake will be highly supportive in raising body temperature consistently to where it needs to be.

The exact ratio of your protein, carb, and fat intake will depend on your own body’s feedback.

Once you Establish Your Baseline (introduced in Module 2) you’ll be able to directly work yourself into an optimal macronutrient balance for your body and its energy needs. We’ll help you move forward from there.

Pillar 6: Using Breath to Control & Heal the Nervous System The breath is the remote control of the brain and the nervous system. It’s one of your best tools and the good news is it’s always with you.

Oxygen is food for your cells and also a great detoxifier. Those of us in adrenal fatigue and compromised thyroid function need more oxygen in order to convert our food into fuel and to create energy. We also need more help detoxifying gently and safely.

The simple act of recoding the way you breathe as we outline in Module 3, will pay huge dividends on your body’s ability to make energy and thus will positively impact your moods, energy levels, digestion, and sense of peace, calm, and stability.

The Result Of Our Six-Pillar Strategy? When you follow this strategy and engage the Six-Pillars simultaneously, you create a beautiful, life-changing healing response to pull yourself out of metabolic chaos (which is what adrenal fatigue, impacted brain function, nervous system and thyroid dysfunction are) and instead create a calm, quiet, and safe environment within the body so that it can heal and thrive.
