Having surpassed the halfway point of Term 1, we encourage everyone to recharge your batteries over the upcoming long weekend. It has been fantastic to see almost every student actively pursuing success with their academics as well as the Distance Day, Sports Day and a number of SAPSASA trials. All we can ask of each person is that they consistently seek to improve themselves and help others to improve at the same time. Well done to each and every student who has demonstrated this over the past 6 weeks. It is pleasing to see that our student and staff attendance at school across the first 6 weeks of this year is at 94% and we look forward to seeing this continue throughout the year to make the most of core learning time. Ideally we would love to achieve 100% but given it is important to rest and recover when unwell, we believe that the current level of attendance is a fantastic result for the start of the school year. Will Gould: Having Will visit us this week and share some of his knowledge and experience around moving to Sydney and joining the Swans AFL Team was simply fantastic. This, combined with his coaching sessions for Shot Put and Discus (for which he holds our school records), was greatly appreciated to support our athletes in the lead up to Interschool Athletics at Kangaroo Inn Area School. We hope as many families as possible can join us for Interschool to encourage our athletes to aim for personal bests on the day. Student Free Day: In following on with implementing the Restorative Practices that underpin our Behaviour Management Policy, every staff member has now reflected upon their personal learnings and planned implementation from the day along with spending time this week in Training and Development reviewing a range of resources to support their implementation. There will be another Student Free Day this term on Monday March 30th, for the Breakspear Learning Sprints that we have been participating in since last year.

This is the final day of this training for all staff across the region and staff are looking forward to refining their practices around making short, fast changes to their teaching to improve student learning. Swimming: Our extra 2 weeks of swimming lessons have been completed with some students, who have missed the last few years of lessons while the pool has undergone replacement, benefiting from these catch ups. Normal swimming lessons will occur for all students R-5 in Term 4. Given we have had our amazing Volunteer Lifeguards ensuring that Public Swimming and Lap Swimming are possible, it has been very exciting this week to see Adele start a 6 week swimming lesson trial. The smiles on the student’s faces, along with seeing the potential of students learning correct strokes and water safety is very exciting. So thank you Adele and we look forward to seeing how we can continue to expand the access to our pool to support the wider community. State-wide Leaders Day: We had the privilege of hearing from Professor Stephen Dinham at this year’s Leaders conference for Public Education. Stephen was very clear about ‘staying the course’ and ensuring we maintain a clear direction within the State and School. He highlighted the critical need of how to ‘get your school moving and improving’. Four key points from Professor Dinham’s presentation that relate to our School and Community for Fundamentals of Student Success are (Dinham 2008, 2016):

Simply focus on each student – we must know them as a person and a learner

Leadership – Every teacher is a leader and involved within school and community to add value

Quality Teaching – Qualities of Teacher and Quality of Teaching for student outcomes. We can’t

just say I used the strategy but we must ensure that students understood and applied the intended

learning

Emergent Leadership – Where student/families work with all teachers/staff to maintain an

alignment and growth for all. We are all leaders of our own learning but this works much better in

team environments.

Staffing Update: This week we start the selection process for our Farm Manager Position and we will be advertising/coordinating back fill for Sarah Goode and Brooke MacDonald as they head towards their maternity leave next term. Raising a complaint with the Department for Education: The department have released an updated procedure for raising a complaint. Sports Day: Thank you once again for everyone who was able to make the day. Congratulations to Wanboo on taking home the win but more so to everyone who gave their best efforts on the day for their respective houses. A huge thank you goes to our volunteers on the day. Without our volunteers the day could simply not happen. This includes the amazing support for the School Canteen who made almost $2000 profit on the day! Looking around on the day it was so pleasing to note, thanks to the commitment of so many, the vast improvements in our facilities and equipment. So thank you to everyone involved and bring on Interschool! Field Days: Help! Well what would Term 1 be without Field Days! This supports the wider community and our school and we know everyone chips in to make this happen under the incredible management of the Lucindale Lions Club. Please keep an eye out for table cleaning rosters, gates etc and do your best to be available so many hands can make light work and another successful year. Naracoorte Bus: The new 57 seater bus is up and running and we are excited to be able to offer casual seats to travellers. The cost this year is $6 per trip and the bus now stops at the Naracoorte Town Square.

Lucindale Show

This year we have had a large number of entries from Year 6-10 Classes for the Lucindale Show. The

students entered creative works that were built in the curriculum for Term 1. We had creative decorated

boots from the Year 6/7, Year 8 drawings, Year 9 photography and paintings from the Year 10 class. We

are proud to say that we had some winners and look forward to next year’s show.

Library Chat Are you tired of thinking of new meals to serve your family? The

library has just the answer. Recently we received a collection of

“Culture and Recipe” books, featuring cultural information on

selected countries, and recipes traditional to those countries. The

best thing is that the books are aimed at children, so the recipes are

simple to follow and easy to make. Experience the flavors of India,

China, Italy, Mexico, Japan and France in your own kitchen.

The next time the family asks “What’s for dinner?” the answer

could be - samosas, bang - bang chicken, tiramisu, tamales, sushi

or alsace tart.

read. Learn how reverting back to Indigenous fire management

Baby Bounce is on every Wednesday during term time 9:30am

Agriculture Update General update It has been a busy few weeks on the school farm as we have welcomed some autumn weather. In Week 4 Year

9’s went on an excursion to Lockhaven at Mundulla to select 8 wether lambs for the Royal Adelaide Show. We

thank the Lock family for their continued support and let’s hope they can be just as successful as last year. In

2020 we will also continue our led steer involvement, with students keen to participate at Adelaide, Naracoorte

and Mount Gambier Shows. Student interest forms have been sent home to senior students in regards to

attending the Adelaide Show, as well as letters to Studs that have previously supported our program.

The vineyard is also coming into its peak time as the pinot grapes are being harvested this week with the support

of Di Giorgio Family Wines. A big thank you also goes to Carol and Brad who have worked tirelessly to make sure

our school is providing a fantastic learning opportunity for our students at Industry Standard.

As an Ag faculty we are gearing up for the South East Field Days in a few weeks. The school will have two sites;

the main tent and a site within the Aussie Flavours and Yakka Pavilion showcasing our wine and new label for

our 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon Wine. Please come along, listen to the students and staff speak at 1:30pm each

day about the processes involved within our school wine and vineyard. In the week leading up to the Field Days

we will also be busy delivering small hay bales to sites which helps raise money for future Ag enterprises and

camps.

Classroom news This term the 3/4 class have focused on where our food comes from within a Paddock to Plate Unit. They have

investigated food packaging, their favourite foods and looked at technology and tools used in the past compared

to now. In conjunction with this they have just started planning their own vegetable plots for an autumn/ winter

garden.

The 5/6 class have been investigating sustainable resource management

practices involved on an Australian pig farm through an Enterprising Pig

Farm Unit. The class have been introduced to and explored concepts of

onsite power generation and farming more sustainably. Students were

also exposed to the ways one farmer converts the manure from their pigs

into renewable energy which powers their farm. The class have also

visited our schools Eco Shelter to compare different farming methods.

This year the 5/6 class will also continue to be involved within the Red-Tailed Black-Cockatoo project. Over the

course of the year students will be learning about the bird, collecting seeds, propagating seedlings and helping

to revegetate local properties with Brown and Desert Stringybark trees. This week saw our students thin out

seedlings that were sown by last year’s class and replant them into tubes so they can continue growing.

Coronavirus (COVID-19) update The Department for Education provided us with this update,

3 March 2020 at 5 pm

The Federal Government has updated its advice on coronavirus disease (COVID-19).

Restrictions are in place for people who have recently returned to Australia from Iran or

mainland China, with the following advice issued to staff and parents about attendance at

schools and early childhood facilities.

In the following scenarios you cannot attend school or an early childhood centre:

If you have left, or transited through Iran on or after 1 March - you must isolate yourself

until 14 days after leaving Iran.

If you have left or transited through mainland China - you must isolate yourself until 14

days after leaving China.

If you have been in close contact with a confirmed case of novel coronavirus - you must

isolate yourself for 14 days after last contact with the confirmed case.

At this stage, the Federal Government advises that travellers from Hong Kong, Indonesia,

Japan, Singapore, Thailand, South Korea, Italy and Cambodia who have not been to mainland

China or Iran are not required to self-isolate unless they are unwell, in which case they should

seek medical assistance.

Practising good hygiene

Everyone can protect against infections by practising good hygiene. Encourage all children and

staff to:

wash their hands regularly, particularly after using the toilet and before eating

avoid spreading infections to others by keeping children home if they are unwell

cover a cough or sneeze with a tissue

Resources and posters are available from SA Health. Parents seeking more information should be encouraged to call the National Coronavirus Health Information Line on 1800 020 080 or visit the Department of Health website.

Do you need a grant to help you with your community project, or know a local student who needs a scholarship to assist them on their journey? If so, Stand Like Foundation will be seeking applications from organisations, not-for-profits and the people of the Limestone Coast. The OneFortyOne Community Capacity Building Grants open this month and local organisations can apply for grants between $5,000 and $20,000 for projects that have a charitable benefit and build capacity in the region. A total allocation of $50,000 is available thanks to the significant funding provided by OneFortyOne. “We’ve been delighted to partner with OneFortyOne since 2014 and thanks to their generosity and commitment to this region, Stand Like Stone has been able to distribute $180,000 across eighteen charitable projects to date”, said Stand Like Stone CEO, Anne Kerr. OneFortyOne’s Willie van Niekerk said “Stand Like Stone is a pillar of the Limestone Coast community and we are excited to be their partners in 2020. We know the community capacity grants support a wide range of community projects and look forward to seeing them come to life.” Stand Like Stone is also offering another round of its annual Small Grants of up to $10,000. These grants are available for organisations whose projects demonstrate sustainability, develop and strengthen communities, reduce social disadvantage and help find solutions to community problems in the Limestone Coast. Two additional educational scholarships are also available through the Lorry Humphreys’ Arts Scholarship and the Lorry Humphreys’ Trades Scholarship valued at $5000 each. These scholarships are available to students undertaking study in the Arts or the Trades in 2020, and can be used for approved curriculum and courses at Australian educational institutions (such as pre-schools, primary schools, secondary schools, higher education institutions and registered training organisations) as well as their related living and boarding costs. “These grants and scholarships are made possible every year thanks to the kind-heartedness of people and organisations in our region, and really epitomise the benefit of donating to Stand Like Stone. We don’t spend the donations; we hold them in trust and invest them for the direct benefit of our community in perpetuity, granting the income generated from those donations. Our grants and scholarships enable us to respond to the needs of the people and communities across the Limestone Coast, ensuring that local projects that they value receive support. We’re looking forward to receiving applications and encourage people and groups to get in touch if they want more information”, said Mrs Kerr. The OneFortyOne Community Capacity Building, Small Grants and Scholarships are open from 15th February. Applications close at 5.00pm on 31st March 2020. The NAB AFL Auskick program makes learning to play AFL fun, safe

and easy for boys and girls. Through weekly coaching sessions they

will learn the skills of the game in an exciting, social and safe

environment. The AFL Auskick program has centres that operate all

over the country.

Children will learn the fundamental motor skills vital for future physical activity and sport participation as

well as learning how to interact with other children as part of a team in small group activities.

The program also provides a great opportunity for parents to interact with their kids through the activities,

have the opportunity to make new friends, learn about the game and spend quality time with their

children.
