Dear Friends, I’ve spent the last three years at film school learning about how to create a film from the first stages of writing to its completion. I have also worked to refine my craft through interning on professional works and working on student films. This fall, for the last time as a student, I have the opportunity to direct and produce my own legitimate work. In November, I’ll be shooting “Ouija: For the Record.” This fifteen-minute movie, shot on HD, chronicles the events that unfold after the Cain family, in 1968 Arizona, buys a tattered Ouija Board and take it home only to find out that it has bigger plans for everyone involved. Through its predictions, the board becomes a belief system for the family and they must decide whether or not to adhere to its requests or live a life united with each other. I want to tell this story because it is one that is very close to my heart. The script, written by Alyssa Kurtzman, is based on my mother’s memoir. Her book tells the story of her family’s struggle with belief in the Ouija Board and how it affected her family and her adolescence. While the book is close to 400 pages in length, Alyssa’s version of the script is only thirteen pages. We’ve attempted to take a very dense story and pack it in to a short film, which I believe we can accomplish quite successfully with the finished product. I’m very devoted to this film and its successful production, and I’d love to share this experience with you. Feel free to look through the rest of this packet to learn more about the film and its required responsibilities. And if you have any more questions about “Ouija: For the Record” or if you’d like to be updated on its process at any point, feel free to email me at [email protected]. If you’d like to further your involvement, I’m also working hard to raise money for the film. We’re all facing financial worries, but if you’d like to donate or otherwise contribute to its creation, I would be thrilled for any support. Either way, I’d love for you to remain involved in what is by far my biggest undertaking to date. Thank you for your time and consideration. Sincerely, Sarah Rudoy

SYNOPSIS

The Cain family has never had much. So when they find a used Ouija Board in a Goodwill store, they feel it is something special. What they don’t know is how its mysteries will affect their lives forever. With the first predictions of the Ouija Board comes excitement over washing machines and other material items. Mary, the mother of Tricia, 14 and Diana, 13 and wife to Levoy can only think of the “riches” that Ouija can give her. But when Ouija predicts something that has an immediate effect, the Cains begin to believe in its power. It confides in them that it is a prophet sent from God, asking of their services and proclaiming that they are “special.” It is when this happens that things begin to turn in the house. Levoy is considered a non-believer by Ouija and Diana suspects that Tricia is behind Ouija’s plans. When the family is asked to move halfway across the world to fulfill its prophecies, Mary decides to leave everything in Arizona behind – including her husband. To me, “Ouija: For the Record” explores a different kind of family and how they deal with the obstacles presented to them, or even the ones they have created for themselves.

ABOUT THE CREW

SARAH RUDOY – DIRECTOR/PRODUCER Sarah Rudoy grew up in Pittsburgh, PA, where she attended public school and planned to be a journalist until she realized there was nothing she wanted to do more than be involved in filmmaking and its creative and visual process. In addition to being a full-time student at NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts, Sarah, now in her last semester at NYU, interned in the art department at the hit television show, Ugly Betty. Last fall, she also lived in Dublin, Ireland and produced, directed and edited a music video for up and coming artist, Wallis Bird, titled “To My Bones.” She has worked on numerous student films as the art director and set decorator. Through all of these experiences, Sarah has gained much knowledge of the art department and hopes to someday be a set decorator in either film or television. KYLE MARTIREZ-MCINTOSH – PRODUCER Kyle Martirez-McIntosh was born in Denver, CO but has lived in Malibu, CA for the past 10 years. He is the son of a news anchor and a motivational speaker and has spent the last two years studying film production at New York University. Outside of film school, Kyle has worked for divisions of Paramount Pictures, Warner Brothers and the Food Network. WILL HOPPER – PRODUCTION DESIGNER Willy Hopper was born and raised on Cape Cod, MA, where he was active in community theater across the cape throughout his childhood years. Will recently graduated with a B.F.A. in Film and Television Production from NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts. He currently works for an up and coming production company alongside Alan Cumming. He also does freelance graphic design and animation. Because of his love of art and drawing, Will hopes to pursue a career in production design. ADDITIONAL CREW MEMBERS: Alyssa Kurtzman (Assistant Director), Monica Schorn (Costumes), Carmen Angelica (Props), Olver Andreson (A.C.), Jaclyn Gramigna (Casting Director)

BUDGET

The expected budget for “Ouija: For the Record” is $3,500. Luckily, as students in the NYU Tisch community, we’re given several benefits to help lower our costs. By accessing some equipment through the university and using our peers as crew members, we can significantly reduce the potential budget, which without the help of Tisch could reach $10,000. It is my goal to keep this film as sensible as possible. I encourage you to look over this budget and I hope, that with your help, together we can make this possible.
