When you walk into GoodHealth Pharmacy on Spratt Road in River-side South, chances are, you’ll see the friendly face of one of the owners.

Rob Cameron is the primary owner of the pharmacy that opened in August of 2007, and has two business partners who work at the loca-tion. Between the three of them, there is always an owner around to help.

“Growing up in a small community in Nova Scotia, I always envision myself as part of a pharmacy with a small town feel,” Cameron said, “where it’s in a community and you pretty much know everybody and everybody knows you.”

Cameron said he knows about 80 per cent of their clientele by name.

“I wanted to create a friendly environment where people didn’t feel like they were just being processed,” he said.

As a small store, GoodHealth is able to cater their services to their clientele and give them exactly what they need.

One example of this is GoodHealth’s specialization in compounding medicine, which is the mixing and altering of drugs to suit the unique needs of the patient. A drug that normally comes in a tablet form can be changed into a liquid or a topical cream, for instance. If your doc-tor prescribes a dosage that isn’t commercially available, GoodHealth can make a capsule containing the specifi c strength required.

When the veterinary clinic a few stores over started sending clients to them for some “weird and wonderful things,” as Cameron put it, the pharmacist enrolled himself and his colleagues in a program run by the Canadian PCCA (Professional Compounding Centers of America) so that GoodHealth would be able to serve their new critter clientele.

“We tailor our medication to the patient,” Cameron said, “whether it’s for a human or an animal.”

Biodentical hormones, such as estrogen, progesterone or testoster-one, are also available in personalized doses.

As the community of Riverside South continues to wade through the water ban, GoodHealth pharmacy installed a water dispenser for af-fordable refi lls on water bottles, further proving their willingness to adapt to community needs.

If clients are overwhelmed by multiple prescriptions and are having trouble remembering to take their medications, GoodHealth will put them all into an organized blister package to simplify what to take and when.

GoodHealth isn’t only known for their specialty and compounding services, however. They carry all major over-the-counter medications as well as many vitamins and herbal supplements.

Even with all of their various services, GoodHealth won’t direct you to go somewhere else while you wait for your medication. The staff will have you in and out as fast as they can.

“We’re trying to bring the personal service back to the pharmacy,” Cameron said. “I think a lot of the time nowadays with pharmacies in big box stores, the service gets a little lost because it’s not their primary focus. Here, being a pharmacy is our primary focus.”

Due to provincial government cutbacks to small-town pharmacies, the look of GoodHealth will be changing over the next few months. They will be reducing the size of their store to minimize overhead costs, but the services provided will stay the same.

“It’s going to be business as usual,” Cameron said.

Upon receiving the Metroland Reader’s Choice award, Cameron said he was thrilled.

“I’d like to say thank you to everybody in the community for giving us the Diamond Award,” he said. “It’s sometimes hard to gauge your impact on the community, and to get recognized by some-thing like this is very humbling. It gives you a heads up to say, ‘Yeah, you’re doing the right thing, so keep doing what you’re do-ing.’”

We’re a small family business in the heart of Riverside South, owned by Mother – Susan and two daughters – Sarah and Coco (not related to Coco’s Paving as some have thought).We opened on October 1, 2010, so to get these awards after only being in business for 8 months is an honour.

We carry organic fair trade coffee and tea as well as muffi ns, scones, cookies, sandwiches and our famous paninis, which are all made fresh daily. Besides our coffees from various countries, we also offer lattes, cappuccinos, chai lattes as well as fl avoured smooth-ies, coffee chillattes and green tea chillers. We also

carry Kawartha Premium ice cream and sorbets in several fl avours.

We have several community artists’ works for sale in Coco’s. In keeping with being community oriented, in the last 8 months we have sponsored two Lei-trim Hawks hockey teams, have helped the children at Steve McLean Public School surpass their goal in raising over $10,000.00 for the Children’s Wish Foun-dation and this summer sponsoring the OSU soccer teams.
