completed by the Autumn andthe contractors will do theirbest to minimise any disruptionto residents. The build processwill start with the Service YardEntrance from Canaan Way. Ifthere are any concerns, contactcan be made through the web-site shown below. A free-phonenumber and telephone num-bers will be advertised on thehoardings around the works. There will also be quarterlynewsletters to keep people upto date with progress.

The site has been examinedby an expert archaeology team.Nothing of any value was dis-covered.

The construction companyhave confirmed that they willhave to use part of the car parkto complete works and storeequipment. 50% of the car parkmay be taken up at any timebut they hope to complete thispart of the build as quickly aspossible. Hind Street will haveto be closed at some point inorder to lay service cables. Anappropriate time will be agreedwith EDCC. Access will beavailable for residents. The carpark will be finished before theroad closure (2 to 3 days). It was suggested that Sains-bury’s pay for part of the carpark at Land of Canaan for freeparking to make up for loss ofspaces nearer to town. Theysaid this had already been dis-

cussed and it would be a goodidea if the Chamber also putforward this proposal toEDDC.

The Farmers market will bemoved to the Land of Canaancar park. The existing Hind Street toilet

block will be demolished andSainsbury’s will provide temp-orary toilets at the Land ofCanaan car park. The store willhave toilets when completed. The contractors hope to mini-

mise any noise from the build-ing works. Although they willbe restricted to work 7.30amto 6.00pm, they may decide towork seven days a week toexpedite the building works.

Once the store has beencompleted there will be 130parking spaces. There is a legalrequirement to make a specificnumber of these available forthe disabled which Sainsbury’swill comply with.

There will be a display panelin the car park showing a planof the town enabling people tolocate the key points of interestand its shops and businesses.

The car park will be open 24hours daily with a restrictionof two hours parking duringstore opening hours. This willnot be policed by Sainsbury’sinitially but it may prove neces-sary if it becomes mis-used. There was some concern that

if there were events held at the

parish church or in town wherepeople would want to park formore than two hours. Sains-bury’s Tony Cook didn’t see thisas a problem. He suggested thatthe peak shopping times wouldbe 5.00pm to 6.00pm on Fri-days and Saturday morningsand there will be room for all.He did confirm that principally, the car park is a designatedshoppers car park as declaredin the terms of the lease withEDDC.

The store will close at 10pm. The store will be predom-

inately a food store. There willbe no garage facilities on sitebut if the garage in Hind Streetshould come up for sale thenSainsbury’s may be interestedin purchasing it. This has notbeen offered to them at thepresent time. Deliveries to the store should

only involve 3 to 4 lorries a dayand they will avoid peak timesi.e school home time etc.Refrigerated lorries will tele-phone ahead to announce theirarrival which allows the storestaff to open the gates readyfor the lorries to drive straightin to the store, minimising anynoise to residents.

There will 200 jobs availableat the store. These will be amixture of full and part time to

be advertised nearer the timein local media on Sainsbury’swebsite. There will be a coremanagement team but the maj-ority of the vacancies will befilled by local people. Most emp-loyees of Sainsbury’s live within2 miles of their workplace.Training will take place at theExeter stores a month beforethe store opening.

Sainsbury’s endeavour to uselocal suppliers. These are selec-ted by the buyers for the store. Concern was raised about the

large volume of customer’s carscausing air pollution. Sains-bury’s has complied with re-quirements agreed during theplanning process and it was nota stipulation that this should bemonitored after the build.EDDC have air quality proce-edures in place. Sainsbury’ssuggested that because shop-pers will be shopping locally, itshould actually reduce pollu-tion.

The store will be heated by abio-mass boiler using no gas. This was a condition agreed inthe planning consent. KierConstruction also propose toassist in some type of comm-unity project whilst they arehere and have asked for somesuggestions from Chambermembers that they couldconsider.

MUD ON ROADSAt the time of going to press, ground works are now under waywhich may result in mud on roads as lorries remove soil andclay. The contractor is taking measures to ensure that this isminimised by regular street cleaning.

End of Ottery Skip ServiceYou may have noticed on the Skip Dates panel on page 39,which we run every month, that there is only one date; Sunday13th March. From April 2011, Devon County Council is stoppingthe skip service on the Land of Canaan. Held on the secondSunday every month, this well used service will be missed bymany Ottery folk who will now have to travel to Wood’s Farm.

It has taken me a long time totell you about this but after theworst of the October floodwater in Feniton church hadsubsided I was walking aroundthe church on my own survey-ing the damage. Near the backof the church I saw on the floor, still covered in mud, a small 4cmblock of wood. I picked it upwithout looking and put it inmy pocket, thinking it hadprobably fallen off the screenleading into the choir vestry. When I returned indoors I tookout this piece of wood and tomy surprise found it was acarving of a “Green Man”So what is a Green Man? Wellthe term was only introducedin 1939 by Lady Raglan whoused the terminology in theJournal “Folk Lore”. It is a carv-ing either in stone or wood ofa man’s head with leaves orgreenery emerging from theface. With only a few excep-tions the medieval masons or

wood carvers depicted him asa gentle and benevolent deity.Try as I might I cannot findwhere this piece of wood camefrom, we have no missing pieceson any of the screens, perhapshe was hidden in the churchand the flood water releasedhim from his hiding place onlyto emerge as a symbol of cele-bration.What will we do with him? Ihope that we can mount himon a plaque and record thefind so that we will rememberthe night of 28th October2008 as a night of the re-birthof St. Andrews Church.David Lanning,Churchwarden

It is 1612 and Jacobean Eng-land is still reeling from theGunpowder Plot of severalyears earlier, and the implica-tions it has for the people, andmore importantly, the Mon-archy. The country has alsobeen tainted by the intriguesurrounding Demonology, andspecifically Witchcraft.Although not the scourge ofthe country as is the popularmyth, it infested parts of Europe.Against this backdrop, Witch-finder introduces the story oftwo young lovers from differentclasses, backgrounds andworlds, thrust together in amelting-pot of politics and sus-picion, fuelled by fear and anover-zealous desire to huntdown the evil-doers, whetherthey exist or not.

Prejudice, power, love andhonour all vie for supremacyin both the corridors of powerin London and the simple

Witchfinder - a new musical premier for New Ottregiansvillage life of Pendle, as they arepitted against each other in astruggle for truth and survival.

With a powerful story, dom-inant characters and soaringmusic, Witchfinder traces thestory of those affected with thetragic and heart-rending conse-quences painting a picture ofpeople which is just as resonanttoday, encompassing life and ofloss but equally, love and hope.

Following their recent succ-esses in raising valuable fundsfor Hospiscare, not least withtwo Premieres in the past twoyears, The New OttregiansTheatre Music Company areextremely honoured to havebeen granted the performingrights for the South Westpremiere of this magnificent

new musical, which will bestaged as usual at The King’sSchool from 26th to 30th July.

Rehearsals will start at theUnited Reformed Church Hallon Tuesday 8th March at7.30pm, and new members arevery welcome to join currentmembers that night to hearHelena Williams, the producer,(among other roles!) introducethe words and music of whatpromises to be perhaps themost spectacular production inthe Company’s history.Anyone wishing to know moreabout the company or themusical will receive a warmwelcome from Toni Williams atBagpuss Gallery in Mill Streetor call 01404 814272.Toni Williams-Pugh

Our forefathers in the medievalbuilding industry could certain-ly teach us all a thing or twoabout constructing buildingswhich would stand the test oftime. The timber roof structuresin many of our churches andother ancient buildings werebuilt to last, using only thetypical carpenters’ tools of theperiod which, amazingly, havechanged little over the cen-turies. Although after manyhundreds of years, timber struc-tures of this nature have beenrepaired or reconstructed, asurprising number of originaltimbers can still be identified. At their February meeting inthe Institute, members andguests of the Ottery HeritageSociety were treated to a fascin-ating talk on medieval roof con-struction, with particular refer-ence to the roof of St Mary’schurch, Ottery St Mary.Guest speaker, Simon Lowne, isa local carpenter. Althoughinitially from Surrey, he haslived locally for a number ofyears. He is a chartered survey-or and a former mining engin-eer before developing his ownbusiness here in the SouthWest. As is well known, Ottery StMary church was rebuilt in theearly 1300’s under the direc-tion of Bishop Grandisson, as

part of his Ecclesiastical Coll-ege. The church was modelledon Exeter Cathedral and dis-plays the same style of Gothicvaulting in the ceiling. In orderto facilitate construction ofsuch vaulting medieval carpen-ters and architects devisedwhat is known as the ‘high roof’.Exeter cathedral is often heldto be the pinnacle of develop-ment for the high roof andOttery, as originally built, sharesmany similarities of construc-tion. An illustration of a rafter‘couple’ from Ottery is shown

above. It consists of rafters, diagonal bracing and a collar. The space under a high roof isunimpeded by any tie beamsrunning between the rafter feetand this allowed clear space forthe construction of the fanvaulting. As originally built there wereapproximately 120 rafter coup-les in the roof structure. Ofthese only a handful survivedin original position, the ravagesof time and decay having re-quired a significant rebuilding

The construction of medieval roofsWith particular reference to St Mary’s Church, Ottery of the roof in the early 19th

century. The original timberswere all cut from oak trees ofbetween 80 and 120 years ofage which would have beengrown in woodland managedspecifically for the purposes ofproducing construction timber. The total number of trees felledto build this roof was in theregion of 150, most having agirth of between 13 and 17inches when cut. All of the roofcomponents have numberingor ‘carpenters marks’ whichare a clear indication that thestructure was prefabricated ina framing yard before beingbrought to site for final ass-embly.In complete contrast to thisecclesiastical style of roofcarpentry, Simon also describedwork undertaken on the con-servation of a medieval hall‘hammer beam’ roof at White-staunton in Somerset (picturedbelow). This required replace-ment of decayed timber andcarving of hammer beams toreplace those removed duringsubsequent alterations. This roofwas originally constructed inapproximately 1460.

Coleridge Memorial Projectbacks poetry stones

As anticipated, the Making ItLocal funding body has de-ferred CMPs latest bid for funds, but they suggested that CMPput in a new bid which focus-sed on the poetry stones idea, linked to new interpretationmaterials - leaflets and an exhi-bition. This idea was alreadyflagged up very strongly in thepublic consultation that tookplace a year ago, so the CMPcommittee have now decidedto push for the stones in ad-vance of the sculpture that wasthe main aim of earlier bids. Theimportance of a sculpturalcentre piece has not been for-gotten however, and it remainson the shopping list for futurefunding efforts. The current plan is to engraveColeridge’s iconic poem “KublaKhan” in its entirety, along theedge of the new footpathacross Canaan Way recreationgrounds. The stones will be oran attractive dark granite andthe poem will stretch for about70 meters along the first partof the path. A new leafletexplaining the story of KublaKhan and its place in Cole-ridge’s life is in preparation andit is hoped the work will be

completed some time this year, preferably during constructionof the path, but if not, thenshortly afterwards. The educa-tional gain is clear enough - butthis could also be a uniqueartefact - possibly the longestsingle line of engraved poetryin the world. The Heritage Lottery will alsobe approached for funds forthe stones, but clearly there isnow a growing need for localfunds to top up any grants wemay achieve. The CMP website has detailsof our progress and an oppor--tunity to make a donation - oryou can subscribe to a newbooklet of Coleridge’s amusingside - entitles Cole-ridge Sauce,it is due for publi-cation aroundEaster time this year. This is achance to invest in Ottery’sfuture, and anyone who hasOttery at heart should beinvolved in supporting CMPsefforts. For more details please visitwww.coleridgememorial.org.ukregularly to keep abreast ofdevelopments. This month at the meeting of the West Country EmbroiderersCarol Tanner showed members how to stitch Sashiko quilting. This is a form of Japanese quilting that was used to pad or patchtheir traditional garments. It is a simple straight stitch quilting.Last month Ann Holden demonstrated “stitch and cut back”.This involved layers of materials and the design was stitchedaround the outline and the centre part cut away to show thecolour underneath, rather like a stained glass window. Samplesof both these items will be shown in the exhibition to be held inMay at the Institute. Anyone interested in joining the group, orcoming to see what we do, please contact Pat Snelling on 01404812226 to make arrangements. The group meet on the firstMonday of the month at The Institute, Ottery St Mary.

We shall be so pleased to be able totake trips out of Ottery. Wedo tend to hold our winter meetings at the Institute as it is hardto forecast the weather. However, come April, we shall beventuring further afield. On 31st March we are arranging a speaker and in April we arehaving lunch at the Pavilion in Exmouth. Problems with ‘Compliance’ PaintsHello and welcome to March’sTip of the Month Column. Inthe ‘DIY world’ there is a lotof confusion regarding ‘trim’paints which are gloss or satinpaints for wood and metalsurfaces. Basically, due to newlegislation these paints whichare traditionally solvent based, have to reduce their VOC level(Volatile Organic Compounds)which contributes to atmos-pheric pollution. As a result, alot of paints and wood preser-vers are switching from thetraditional solvent based paint,to a water based paint. The problem that customersare finding is that, say forexample, a tin of Dulux Satin-wood that they purchased lastyear, will not do the same thingas a tin purchased this year. That is because the new waterbased topcoat will not ‘sit’ ontop of a solvent based under-coat. It simply will not adhereand will peel off. Like I saidearlier, there is a lot of confu-sion out there with these new‘compliance paints’ and a lotof people have been badly ad-vised on these.Abbotts is a Dulux Colour andAdvice Centre (the only onein Devon), and as a result wehave been sent this up to dateinformation from Dulux which

applies to their products only.“On bare surfaces use twocoats of Dulux primer/under-coat (water based), and thenone coat of the water basedSatinwood or eggshell finishpaints.“The general rule of thumb isthat water based paints will notgo on top of solvent basedpaints, but, if for example, youare recoating a surface that waspainted using a solvent basedpaint that is a few years old, thenyou will be able to over coatwith a water based paint pro-viding you lightly sand the sur-face to remove the sheen, andthen apply one coat of primer/undercoat to adhere to the sur-face, before applying your waterbased top coat. If the surface isfreshly painted in solvent basedpaint, then the paint will needto be sanded right back or poss-ibly removed prior to applyingthe water based paint.”I hope this makes some kind ofsense! For specific informationand the correct advice comeand see us in store. You will alsofind that our range of Duluxpaints are very, very competit-ively priced against the DIYsuperstores. And we will makesure you have the right paint, for the right job!

LionBob Francis has put a great dealof work in getting this websiteup and running, and it is wellworth a visit in order to viewits regular updates and photo-graphs.I did mention that we were inthe semi final of the DistrictSkittles. We won this againstClevedon Lions Club, and nowhave to play the final which isagainst Okehampton LionsClub. This game will decidewhich team with be presentedwith cup at the District Con-vention at Torquay in March. We recently presented Honi-ton Brownies with some moneywith which to purchase equip-ment. Some of us went along

to one of their meetings inorder to have our photographtaken with them. We may looka bit out of place, but they madeus very welcome. Support oflocal organisations is one of themain objects of the Lions move-ment, and several of them havebenefited over the years. We normally meet at The DeerPark Hotel at Weston nearHoniton, but this is closed forre-furbishment, so at themoment we are ‘homeless’.Several of our members andtheir ladies attended the SeatonLions Club Annual CharterAnniversary held at the Dol-phin Hotel at Beer. ‘DIY SOS: The Big Build’ is theBBC’s flagship DIY show andattracts around 6 millionviewers in its prime time sloton BBC One. Presented byNick Knowles, the show is anhour long programme in whichwe take on really ambitiousbuilds to help out truly deserv-ing families. We are filming the fourthepisode of our 22nd series inOttery St Mary where we willbe helping the Wright family(consisting of Mum, Dad andtheir three sons). The three boys(ages 7, 9 and I1) are currentlysharing one bedroom as thefamily live in a two bedroombungalow! The Wrights started work on asmall extension and loft conver-sion back in February 2009 buta run of bad luck has severelyhampered their progress withthe build. Dad (Ian) has had totake on all of the labour himself(with the occasional helpinghand from his good friend John)as they don’t have the moneyto employ trades. Whilst all thework lan’s done is of an excel-lent standard, he just doesn’thave the time or the experienceto complete such a massivebuild. But still he soldiers on.

BBC’s DIY SOS comes to the rescue of an Ottery family

Mum (Morny) suffers withchronic M.E and is unable tohelp with the build. She is beingtreated for depression becauseof the state of the house. Ontop of the build she has alsohad to nurse her motherthrough breast cancer and hassuffered the death of herestranged father. Their youngestson Casper also has severebehavioural problems whichhas made life very difficult livingin the shell of a small bungalow. It is a case of many cuts havemade them weaker. breaking point. ‘DIY SOS’ istheir only hope.We feel that they representhard working families who takeon these projects with only thebest intentions for their familybut for reasons beyond theircontrol things don’t work outas planned and they findthemselves in dire straights. With the help of the local com-munity and the generosity oflocal trades people, we’re goingto finish the build. This will givethe boys the rooms they needfor their personal developmentand will lift the burden fromMum and Dad’s shoulders. Ianand Morny are integral mem-

bers of their community and itis their dream to start a musicgroup for the children in thearea. (See panel below left).Ian was a founding member of‘Stage by Stage’ in Exeter andwould like to replicate itssuccess here in Ottery St Mary.By completing the build we willgive them the time to do thisand ultimately leave a lastinglegacy for the family and thecommunity.Pictured above: Members of theDIY SOS team (left to right):Charlie Luxton, Mark Millar, julian Perryman, Billy Byrne,Chris Frediani, Nick Knowles,Mat Skelton.

Jumble Sale successOttery St. Mary Scout Group Mammoth Jumble Sale is over foranother year! We had two very successful weekends with hugesupport from both far and near. The Group would like to thankthe people of Ottery for once again so generously donating somany items to be sold. Thanks also go to the large number ofpeople who came on both weekends looking for bargains. Adonation from the Jumble Sale is to be given to the B.B.C. RadioDevon Air Ambulance appeal. On a slightly less positive note, the success of the two weekendswere marred by the theft of one of our purpose designedadvertising boards, taken from the gate of the Millennium Green. As a result, some of the hard earned funds raised will have to bespent on a new board for next year’s Jumble Sale - an unnecessaryexpense caused through somebody’s stupidity. Mary Moore, Organiser

NEW LIFE CHURCH

UNITED REFORMED CHURCH

THE PARISH CHURCH

We have has our AGM for CTIO and Sue Wakely-Stoyle handed over her Chair’s role to the RevdGraham Tarn of the URC. Each year the chair’sposition goes to a different CTIO representative sothat it is shared out fairly and without being a ‘job

for life’ which can be quite daunting for an already very busyperson. It gives variety of approach which we value too.The meeting to discuss the Youth Work Report is scheduled forthis month so we will be able to give you news of it in April. Itwill be a big undertaking if we find we can commit ourselves toit and will need not only financial backing but moral and practicalsupport and encouragement.

New Life church meets at the Kings School main hall at 10.30am on a Sunday where we enjoy worship, biblical teaching andSunday school groups for the children. We are always pleasedto welcome visitors and are happy to pray with anyone whoneeds healing or who has any concerns. Home groups are heldon a Wednesday evening and we are currently meeting on thefirst Wednesday of every month at the New Life chapel for atime of worship and prayer.‘Groundbreakers’ is our very lively kids club for children aged7 – 10 years. It meets during term time between 6pm and 7.30pmat the New Life Chapel on Friday evenings – all children arewelcome. The Youth Group, for 11 – 18 yr olds, also meetsevery Friday from 7.30 to 9.30pm.If you want to know more about New Life or any of our activitiescontact Bruce and Heather Talbot at [email protected] check out our website www.newlifeottery.org.uk.

Time for change? The URC holds its annual general meetingearly this month. Philip Scoble and Judith Webber are standingdown from the leadership team but will doubtless continue theirinvolvement in various aspects of church life. Our URC minister, the Revd. Graham Tarn has just taken over as chair of ChurchesTogether in Ottery. The healthy church questionnaire lastNovember threw up thought-provoking comments and theleaders have already had one session considering theimplications. This exercise will lead into a weekend when localURC representatives join the congregation and seek God’sguidance for the future. This month Women and Men hold Breakfasts. On March 5 thewomen meet at the Tumbling Weir at 8am. Please book withRuth 850747. On Saturday March 26 at 8am the Men welcomeas guest speaker the Revd. Alastair McCollum, vicar ofKilmington. The ex-King’s student recently attracted pressattention when he took over as licensee of the Yarcombe Inn.Men meet in the Lamb and Flag, Batts Lane, beginning with a fullEnglish breakfast. Men from any church or none are welcome.Bookings to Philip (812118). Meanwhile we look forward to theinter-church house groups in Lent and plans are afoot for theMothering Sunday service at the URC on April 3 at 10.30am.

Over 80 children and adultsgathered for the first Café Churchat Ottery St Mary Parish Churchin February. Our topic in March(on Sunday 13th at 11am) is ‘Faith– so what’ and we will be joinedby the Bishop of Exeter.Café Church stands for ChurchAccessible For Everyone, and theaim of this service is to welcomechurch and non church goers aliketo join together around tables

enjoying good coffee and pastries, and to have the opportunityto discuss ‘life’ issues in a Christian context. It will be a veryinformal gathering with quiet time for reflection and theopportunity to listen to and engage in thought provokingdiscussions in a safe environment. For children there will be acrèche and group activities. Each month on the second Sunday‘Café’ Church will tackle a particular life subject in a relaxedenvironment. Topics planned for future Café Church sessionsinclude money management, bereavement, parenting and familylife, developing good habits, staying healthy and keeping safe.

ST ANTHONY’S CATHOLIC CHURCH

THE SALVATION ARMYThe Methodist fellowship had a recent double Christening inthe persons of Hannah Patel and Eva Matthews - granddaughtersto Terry and Rosemary Palmer. A really warm welcome into theChristian community was made to them and we hope memoriesof the Service will stay in the hearts of all their families for manymonths to come. The midweek fellowship have committed to following the e100readings - although as we don’t meet weekly we think it’ll takeus 2 years to complete!! The coffee morning meeting continueswith occasional new faces looking round the door. Everyone iswelcome and we are always pleased to see you. We have had areceptive ‘audience’ at it for Rosalind Sopp’s little booklet ofpoems. As ever, services are Sunday mornings at 10.30am -preachers as advertised on our board.

The season of Lent will soon be upon us, where we prepareourselves spiritually for the great festival of Easter. We hope tobe sharing with other churches in the town for Lent study groups;an opportunity to share alongside others whose traditions andways of worship may be foreign to us, but always immenselybeneficial. We have just held our Churches Together in Ottery AGM, whichmarks the end of my year as Chair, and I would take thisopportunity to thank everyone for their help and support duringthe year, and wish my successor well.Sue Wakley-Stoyle

We used the occasion of Commitment Sunday to make StellaMunn a member of The Salvation Army at Ottery St Mary. Whata great start to 2011. The photo shows Stella, with Harry holdingthe flag and me presenting her with her certificate. We were privileged, at the end of January, to have the visit ofMajor’s John & Anne Read from The Salvation Army’s TerritorialHeadquarters in London. Major John Read is the Salvation Army’sEcumenical Officer for the United Kingdom and Republic ofIreland so the visit coincided with the end of the Week of Prayerfor Christian Unity. Major John preached at the United Serviceat the Parish Church on the Sunday evening.Major Anne Read is currently our Anti-human trafficking co-ordinator for the UK. It was interesting to discover how widespread the problem of trafficking is. During the presentation wewere told that much of the chocolate we eat uses cocoa beansharvested by trafficked children but by choosing fairly tradedchocolate we can be sure that it is also free from traffickedlabour. In the early 1970’s Major Anne Read’s grandfather, Tom Vallelly, was in charge of The Salvation Army in Ottery. Anne used tocome on holidays to Ottery during the summer. Another visit, during those days, was with a group of young Salvationists fromWales when the local paper asked, “Is Ottery ready for thearrival of some young evangelists in mini skirts?” During theweekend we were able to show Major Anne where hegrandfather’s cottage was.The Salvation Army leaders from around the world recentlymet in London to elect our new General (International Leader). The selected candidate is Commissioner Linda Bond. The newGeneral takes office on 2nd April and becomes the third womanto hold the post, the first being one of William Booth’s daughtersin 1934.Steven Watson. Captain, Corps Officer,Ottery St Mary & Exmouth 01404 812159Please do not hesitate to join any of our congregations or tojoin a Lent Group...you are always assured of a warm welcome.

One of Shakespeare’s bawdiest plays, The Merry Wives of Windsor, comes to Payhembury Parish Hall on Tuesday 15th March 2011.Performed by postgraduate students from Exeter UniversityDrama Department, the performance promises to delight withits cross dressing and intrigue as bumbling Falstaff thinks he hasa chance to steal the hearts of several ladies, especially two wealthymarried women, Mistress Ford and Mistress Page. Neither isinterested in the unfit and unattractive Falstaff, and when theydeclare to each other the receipt of Falstaff’s letters, they decideto play him along, resulting in a fine comic plot.Following last year’s very successful performance of The Tempestit is expected that this performance will sell out. Local Mental Health Projectto build Therapy Garden

The Side by Side Project, based in Ottery St Mary, is a small, supported volunteering Project, which is funded by the NationalLottery and managed by EDVSA. The Project has been runningfor over 10 years and has evolved over this time. We offer peoplerecovering from mental ill health the opportunity to learn aboutgardening and outdoor craft activities at our gardening site atOffwell, near Honiton.Working as part of a small team on the gardening plot or otheractivities that we offer gives the volunteers the opportunity tolearn some new skills and make new friends in a positive andsupportive setting. This enables people to build up their selfconfidence and contribute positively to community life and tohave less reliance on health services. Some of our service usershave now moved on to educational courses and paid employment. We take referrals throughout East Devon, from Mental HealthSupport Workers and GPs. We are constantly seeking new waysto enable our supported volunteers to express their creativeideas and also to promote this very valuable Project in the localcommunity. Our plan for this year is to create a ‘Therapy Garden’,which will be user led and represent the four seasons. It willfollow of the stages of recovery to mental wellness. When theTherapy Garden is complete we will have an Open Day for thelocal community to see what the service users have achievedand promote the Project to a wider audience. We will need many items to achieve our goal such as plants, compost, timber, pots, tools, gravel and bark chippings. If anylocal business is interested in making a financial contribution ordonating any materials we would be extremely grateful. Anyindividual or business that assists us would be mentioned in anypress coverage and obviously would be invited to our open day.The Project runs sessions from Monday to Thursdays and wecurrently have spaces on all days. If you, or anyone you know, issuffering from mental ill health and is interested in joining theProject please get in touch for more information. To get in touch please contact:Ellen Hunt, Side by Side Project Support Worker.Telephone: 01404 54904. e mail: [email protected]

Ottery St Mary Venture Scouts CarnivalClub had their best season ever season in2010 attending many carnivals in Devon,Dorset and Somerset including SturminsterNewton for the first time. Awards won in2010 include 8 1st prizes, including firstat Taunton, 2 2nd prizes, and two spirit ofcarnival awards. This is a fantasticachievement considering the majority ofthe members are under the age of 20. Theydefinitely make up for their lack ofexperience with their enthusiasm.Following the success of 2009, we built apirate themed float complete with boat, rotating capstan, treasure chests thatopened and cannons. Over 400 light bulbswere added to the float for 2010 providinga challenge for the electricians. Thecolourful costumes were hand made byPat Hamilton and contrasted well with theboat. The artistic talent of some of the newermembers gave the finishing touches to awell constructed float.

First week we started back in2011 saw the Beavers enjoyinga Christmas Party. It was notthat we had gone mad! just thatour original party was can-celled after Ottery was delugedwith snow before Christmas.Needless to say the party wasa great success with a mix ofgames and good food for all theBeavers to enjoy.Preparation for the ScoutGroup Annual Jumble Salemeant that the Beavers movedout of the Scout Centre andtravelled to Exeter to workwith one of the Scout Associa-tion activity badge sponsors.Pets at Home invited theBeavers to go shopping andfind various items on a shopp-ing list - these included dogleads, hamster toys, fish foodand live reptile food. They thenshowed the staff their goodiesand were shown several smallanimals. These animals werepassed around for Beavers to

cuddle. They included Guineapigs, a rat, dwarf hamsters andtwo beautiful rabbits.Information was given to theBeavers about the care andnutrition of these animals andwere also given a work bookto fill in. At the end of the even-ing the Beavers went homehaving had a great time and therabbits breathed a sigh of relief. The second week of the JumbleSale (with the Scout Centre stilla major sorting area) theBeavers visited Ottery St. MaryParish Church. They found outabout lots of interesting featuresof the church and even enjoy-ed a trip up the tower to lookat the bells. The Beavers allwrote a simple prayer and atthe end of the evening eachBeaver lit a candle and thoughtabout people who were not asfortunate as themselves. Sincethe visit to the parish churchthe Beavers have been presen-ted with their faith badge.

By the time you are readingthis 2011 will be well under wayand hopefully Spring will be justaround the corner. Thesnowdrops and daffodils arealready beginning to burstthrough and bring a welcomeglimpse of colour. At our Inner Wheel meetingheld on 17th January we weredelighted to welcome Rose-Marie Burrows, Vice Chair ofOtter Vale Friends of Hospis-care as our guest, and presen-ted a cheque for £1,500 whichhad been raised at our quiz inNovember. Rose-Marie gave abrief overview of the workcarried out by Hospiscare inthe Ottery St Mary district andadvised that the funds wouldgo towards supporting the 2nurses who current served thearea. In February we held our ‘Sun-day Challenge’ when we invitedour Rotary partners to join usfor very tasty and traditionalSunday Roast Beef lunch atGittisham Village Hall followed

by some light hearted fun chall-enges. In the past the Rotarianshave beaten us at skittles, dartsand 10 pin bowling so this timethey had to try their hand atmaking a flower corsage, icingcup cakes and making and dec-orating a paper hat! Needlessto say on this occasion the

ladies did extremely wellalthough a valiant attempt wasmade at all three events by theboys. We do wonder whatevents they will put forwardnext year though….perhapsDIY may be on the cards?Over the next couple of monthswe have a number of forth-

coming events such as ourInter-Club meeting when weshall welcome all other InnerWheel Clubs in our District toan Afternoon Tea, and ourOverseas Meeting in April whenHugh Scudder of ChristianResponse to Eastern Europewill be telling us of his Charity’swork in taking articulatedlorries laden with humanitarianaid to the poorest areas ofMoldova. These are distributedwithout charge to benefit asmany as possible. As you can see, we alreadyhave a very busy year planned- all we need now is somewarmer weather and a touchof spring to brighten each dayand encourage us in our activ-ities. More next time!Sue HulleyClub CorrespondentPicture: Inner Wheel membersEleanor Watson, Romy Fletcherand Beryl Evans with their win-ning paper hat, cup cakes andflower corsage.

Rotary Round-UpNEWS FROM THE ROTARYCLUB OF OTTER VALLEY

Our first meeting in our normalvenue was on the 4th January. Our speaker for this eveningwas Mike Hull from the DevonDrivers Centre at West Point. He chose as his topic “DriveSafely for Longer”. Sensibly, heasked around the club what theactual medical and eyesightrequirements; it was quite sur-prising how many were unsure. He then moved on to medic-ations and their possible effects.Having looked around theroom and assessed our overallage group, he pointed out thatprescription drugs could be asdangerous as drugs that aregenerally misused, and thedrink/drive rules appliedequally to them as the others. So if you are on prescriptiondrugs take advice on their sideeffects. He strongly advised us to lookfor sources of help, particularlyfamily and friends. If theyadvocated that now might bethe time to give up, don’t getcross. They are probably right. If the doctor puts you onmedication or diagnoses aparticular condition, ask aboutits effect on your driving. LastJuly, the club held its majorfund-raising event, Sail4Heroes,

which raised £20,000. At theend, we had only collected in£15,000 so at the presentationin London, only cheques for£7,500 were presented to thetwo beneficiaries, the RoyalBritish Legion and Help4-Heroes. The rest of the monies, including Gift Aid, had been allreceived by this January soeach was owed a cheque for£2500. Accordingly, on the11th January, the club invitedthe local representative ofHelp4Heroes, Jessica Colson, tocome to the club and talkabout the charity and receiveher cheque. The charity wasfounded by Bryn and EmmaParry, Bryn being an ex-service-man himself. He served in thearmy for ten years. After leaving,he heard of an acquaintancewho had been injured inAfghanistan and felt that moreneeded to be done for thesepeople and they decided to puttheir skills to helping theseunfortunate folks.Headley Court, the militaryrehabilitation centre, desper-ately needed a new hydro-pool,but it would cost 8 millionpounds. Undeterred, they gottogether 300 people and raisedthis sum. Buoyed by their

success, they went on to raisea total of £12 million in the firstyear; in the 3 years up toOctober of last year, they haveraised a total of £80 million –no mean feat. All donatedmonies go to the charity, mer-chandising pays all adminis-tration costs. Of the moneyraised, £3.5 million has goneon a new Combat Stress wingin Birmingham hospital; £6million towards the QuickReaction Fund and £15 milliontowards other recoveryprogrammes. She concluded bypointing out that the charityonly worked forwards, sowould not assist those injuredin the First Gulf War or theFalklands. For our next meeting on the18th, we were joined by AreaScouts Co-ordinator, JohnGreen and Ottery Scout Lead-er, Bruce Harvey who reportedon their joint Scout camp withthe Scouts of their twinningtown in Germany, Ilsfeld. Theidea of such a camp startedback in 2007 with a discussionwith the twinning group fromIlsfeld who had brought someScout leaders with them. The following year, 2010, 40Ottery Scouts went to Ilsfeld;the main idea being to build onthe excellent relations/friend-ships which had been estab-lished at the first camp.Their hosts took them to Stutt-gart, a major German city; formany of the Ottery Scouts thiswas their first visit to a foreigncity of such a size. They showedthem how to make campfirechairs which they were able totake home with them and manyother things. Many friendshipswere formed, with emailaddresses and mobile phonenumbers being exchanged. Itwas not just the youngsterswho benefited, the leaders gotto know their charges betterand were able to help thembecome more independent.

This report really showed thevalue to the community of thetwinning programme and theconsiderable advantage it pro-vided to the local youth. For the next meeting, we hadthe other beneficiary ofSail4Heroes, the Royal BritishLegion, to talk to us in the formof the Chairman of the DevonBranch, Ralph Howard-Will-iams, a retired Royal Marineand a fellow Rotarian fromExmouth Raleigh. He started his talk by agreeingthat the Legion although itretained the Guardianship ofRemembrance needed to getaway from the image of old mendrinking beer. He began bygoing back to the end of WorldWar I when the soldiers return-ed to a “land fit for heroes”only to find that there were nojobs and most of them were outon the streets. The sad plightof these men lead to the forma-tion of many charities, one ofwhich was the Earl Haig Fund, later to become the Legionwhich has looked after ex-Servicemen ever since. However, we are now in the eraof Iraq and Afghanistan and themission of the Legion haschanged. It is now dealing muchmore with the welfare of theex-service community, both theservicemen and their families;the injured and their needs;their interests and fosteringthem and last but not least thememory of those that have fall-en. It is a big organisation with2,600 branches, 620 clubs and34,000 members with 103branches overseas. It is thelargest service charity with anincome of £200 million a yearand is the 4th largest charityin the country. The Club mem-bers were most impressed withRalph’s talk and it clarifiedmany queries raised by mem-bers thus concluding a veryinteresting month of speakers.

Our first two February walkswere what I call “chunky”-plenty of ups and downs. TheThursday walk with 23 walkersstarted in Membury, a villagewithin the Blackdown Hills areaof outstanding natural beauty.Membury is a village of con-trasting buildings from quaintterraced cottages to modernproperties on the village edge.Leaving the car park it was asteady climb past the 13thcentury church crossing GoyleAcre Lane to reach the highpoint at Yarty Copse. We thenwent down to Yarty Farm thenon to a footpath along side theRiver Yarty to reach BeckfordBridge, an ancient packhorsebridge where we had our coffeebreak. After coffee we followed pathsacross farm land to Lea HillFarm and then on past RockMill for a climb up to MemburyFort. The views were fantasticfrom this 600 feet plus highpoint. We then returned downto Membury for the journeyhome. A good walk in goodweather. Our Saturday walk started atConey‘s Castle. We needed wet

weather gear to start with butapart from a little drizzle wehad a dry walk - but with plentyof mud!We followed the WessexRidgeway before joining theLiberty Trail to Knapp Farm. From there we crossed manyfields to the Monarch’s Way. Wereached a small stream wherethe bridge was taped off as acouple of planks were broken.Even so some crossed thebridge whilst others crossed viathe ford and a chance to washmud off their boots. It was alongthis part of the walk a ladywalker found that the sole ofher boot was half off. Amakeshift repair with a bootlace tied the sole back in place. This repair was repeated sev-eral times before the end. Going through the farmyard atHigher Wyld Farm we were

herded by three collies. Wedidn’t look like sheep! After a picnic lunch at Highgatewe remained on the Monarch‘sWay through Wyld Warrenwood before leaving to followpaths downhill and onto Fish-ponds Bottom passing the smallchurch before returning up hillto our cars. An enjoyable walkin spite of the m mud. We are a local, informal groupof friends, with volunteersleading walks and everyonetaking responsibility for them-selves - no liability consequen-tial or otherwise is accepted forany incident. Anyone is wel-come to join a walk, providingthey bring food (as necessary)and are equipped with suitableclothing, boots and water-proofs.All walks meet at the Land ofCanaan Car Park, Ottery St

Mary at 9.00am and we sharecars. For further informationand a programme of our walks, please contact Trevor on 01404811830 or Barbara on 01404814204.

If you have been watching thenew BBC series ‘Faulks onFiction’ (or even if you haven’t)you may be interested in theaccompanying book. This is acompelling and personal takeby novelist Sebastian Faulks onthe story of how the dazzlingcreations of novelists havehelped to shape the world welive in. This is an engagingliterary and social history thatfocuses not on the writers buttheir creations, from Tom Jonesto Sherlock Holmes, Mr Darcyto Lady Chatterley this bookcelebrates the act of novelisticcreation and how the mostenduring fictional charactershave helped to map the Britishpsyche. This is a hardback witha cover price of £20 but wehave it on offer at just £9.99.Turning to fiction we are expec-ting Ian Mcewan’s novel ‘Solar’to arrive in paperback duringthe first week in March. MichaelBeard is a Nobel prize-winning

physicist whose best work isbehind him. Trading on hisreputation, he speaks for enor-mous fees, lends his name tothe letterheads of renownedscientific institutions and half-heartedly heads a government-backed initiative tackling globalwarming. A compulsive woman-iser, Beard finds his fifth marr-iage floundering. But this timeit is different: she is having theaffair, and he is still in love withher. When Beard’s professional andpersonal worlds collide in afreak accident, an oppor-tunitypresents itself for Beard toextricate himself from hismarital mess, reinvigorate hiscareer and save the world fromenvironmental disaster. Rangingfrom the Arctic Circle to thedeserts of New Mexico, “Solar”is a serious and darkly satiricalnovel, showing human frailtystruggling with the most press-

ing and complex problem ofour time. A story of one man’sgreed and self-deception, it is aprofound and stylish new workfrom one of the world’s greatwriters. Normally priced at£7.99 we have this on offer forjust £4.99.Another big name just out inpaperback is Kate Atkinson.‘Started Early, Took My Dog’starts off as a day like any otherfor security Chief Tracy Water-house, until she makes a pur-chase she hadn’t bargained for.One moment of madness is allit takes for her humdrum worldto be turned upside down withfear and danger at every turn. The cover price is £7.99 butwe have it on offer at £4.99.On a lighter note we also haveKatie Fforde’s new paperback‘A Perfect Proposal’ in stock.Described as a funny fresh andlively read this is perfect forlight reading and since it is also

on offer at just £4.99 it won’tbreak the bank either!Turning to the children’ssection World Book day is the3rd of March and we will beaccepting the £1 World BookDay tokens as usual.
