PREPARING FOR FALL AND THE HOLIDAYS Fr. Trey Nelson

During our most recent parish staff meeting we began, as we always do, with prayer. For that meeting, we

offered, “An Autumn Prayer.” The prayer spoke in thanksgiving of the earlier sunsets, the changes in colors of

the leaves, the cooler weather, and so on. It was a beautiful prayer, but we all kind of laughed a little as we

prayed it out out-loud together. Other than a recent cool snap, we just didn ’t feel like we were there yet. It is

coming, however. Like many of you, I love this time of year. I thought that, since the holidays are really not

that far away, I would take a moment to offer a few personal reflections on how my approach to the season has

changed slightly over the years. I think we all know that, once Halloween gets here, we ’re really rolling. Trick

or treat passes, then we’re hearing stories in the news about Thanksgiving holiday travel, and before you know

it, we’re at Christmas and another new year. If we’re not careful, all of it will blow right by us in what seems like

an instant. And tucked within all of that is the wonderful Season of Advent, a time to slow down a little and be,

perhaps, a little more reflective. So, here’s my thought. We control the pace of things. To be sure, there are

work and school and everything else involved, not to mention the remaining precautions associated with a

pandemic. However, we are the ones who decide to stop—or not—and take a deep breath. We are the ones

who show our families how to do this. Most important of all, we need to remind each other how important it is

to slow down, take a deep breath, and enjoy the gift of time with one another. You may want to take a

moment and consider:

How can I and my family pray better during this time?

Could I, perhaps, worship a bit more frequently? Set aside a few minutes each day to pray?

Does my family (or my spouse and I) share family meals together?

Who can I reach out to—for the first time in a while?

And where would I hope to be—spiritually—in and beyond the holidays?

In our recent R.C.I.A. class, we spoke of the “rhythm” or our lives, rather than the “pace” of our lives. What

does the rhythm of your life (and your family’s life) look like? A healthy rhythm takes us in and out of work and

rest, allowing time daily and weekly for God and the ones we love. The holidays offer us a perfect opportunity

to be renewed in this.

White Ribbon against Pornography (WRAP)Awareness Week October 31 – November 7

Most of us do not want to talk about pornography. Yet, it is a fast-growing industry affecting our culture. Pornography is circulated through various media outlets. Statistics show that the internet makes it easily accessible. Also, millions of emails are disseminated daily with pornographic or sexually explicit nuances and advertisements. WRAP’’s goal is to increase awareness of the negative and addictive impact pornography has on society. White ribbons/bows will be displayed during awareness week. Please unite with us as a faith community to say No” to Pornography. BAA 2021-22: Caring for our Families in the Spirit of St. Joseph In scripture, we find a prime example of good stewardship in the earthly father of Jesus. Recognizing that God entrusted him to the care and livelihood of the Savior of the world and the Blessed Mother, Joseph chose to discern God’s guidance. Like Joseph, God has called us to be good stewards over all that He entrusts to us. Family is one of the invaluable assets God has bestowed upon us. This year's theme for the Bishop's Annual Appeal, Caring for Our Families in the Spirit of St. Joseph, reminds us of our vital role in not only attending to our family but also our church and community families. Thank you for your support! Please prayerfully consider contributing to this year’s campaign. Give online at: www.diobr.org/stewardship

A VOCATIONAL VIEW The blind beggar Bartimaeus would not listen to the many

people scolding him to be quiet, but shouted all the louder

in prayer, "Son of David, have pity on me!" Only then did

Jesus call him over and answered his need. Bartimaeus

becomes a powerful example of how persistent we must be

in prayer when we are asking God to show us His Will for

our lives. And then, ask Him for the grace to accept it. If you

feel God is offering you the grace of a Church vocation,

contact Father Josh Johnson at (225) 336-8778,

CULTURE OF LIFE REFLECTIONS “I would now like to say a special word to women who have had an abortion. The Church is aware of the many factors which may have influenced your decision, and she does not doubt that in many cases it was a painful and even shattering decision. The wound in your heart may not yet have healed. …But do not give in to discouragement and do not lose hope. …The Father of mercies is ready to give you his forgiveness and his peace in the Sacrament of Reconciliation."
