8) An Introduction to Japanese Science Fiction -from pre-cyberpunk to present days-
(Lecturer: Taillandier, Denis Mr.) <Compulsory>
Setting mainstream culture aside, we will focus on subculture to have
a look into Japanese society from the perspective of science fiction.
Even though it is through “newer” and more popular media, especially
manga and anime, that Japanese SF has met with international
success, there is also a very rich legacy of prose science fiction. Along
with an account of its origin and its development, we will look into
concrete examples - in the form of short stories, manga and anime - to
understand how it addresses contemporary cultural and social issues in the context of a
technologically-driven globalization. Students will be expected to make short presentations, based
on their reading / viewing, that will lead to class discussions. The class meets once a week for a total of 21 hours each semester.
