Otahuhu College Newsletter Friday 14 June 2019 From our Principal The results of the recent BOT elections has been released today (see notice below). We would like to thank all candidates for putting their names forward. It is a sign of a healthy, vibrant community when so many highly skilled people are willing to give up their time to support the College. Congratulations to our new Board of Trustees’ members. The highlight of this week was our annual King’s College exchange for our Year 12 students. This event was established 21 years ago and has resulted in long term friendships, and I am sure that this year will have a very similar outcome. When you are with our students every day, you sometimes take for granted how respectful, hardworking and willing they are to help and support others. They are without doubt a fantastic group of young men and women and a real credit to their families and to our community. Next week we have exams and assessments. As always good preparation is important, and the aim has to be to prepare better for these assessments than before. All students should be studying and preparing and in this week leading up to the exams. Family life can be very busy with a lot of commitments, so establishing routines together can make sure that your child is best prepared for success. Study every day. This can be as simple as reviewing what was learnt during the day and coming up with good questions to ask the next day. Start studying with your difficult subjects first, then move onto your more enjoyable subjects. Study in 20-30 minute blocks having a break between each one. Phones and other devices should be charged in a common area, so they are not used to distract from study or late at night. Get a good night's sleep, teenagers generally need 8 –10 hours sleep a night. Getting into routines at home for study will help your child succeed in the upcoming exams.

Otahuhu College Newsletter

Friday 14 June 2019

From our Principal The results of the recent BOT elections has been released today (see notice below). We would like to

thank all candidates for putting their names forward. It is a sign of a healthy, vibrant community when

so many highly skilled people are willing to give up their time to support the College. Congratulations to

our new Board of Trustees’ members.

The highlight of this week was our annual King’s College exchange for our Year 12 students. This event

was established 21 years ago and has resulted in long term friendships, and I am sure that this year will

have a very similar outcome. When you are with our students every day, you sometimes take for

granted how respectful, hardworking and willing they are to help and support others. They are without

doubt a fantastic group of young men and women and a real credit to their families and to our

community.

Next week we have exams and assessments. As always good preparation is important, and the aim has

to be to prepare better for these assessments than before. All students should be studying and

preparing and in this week leading up to the exams. Family life can be very busy with a lot of

commitments, so establishing routines together can make sure that your child is best prepared for

success.

Study every day. This can be as simple as reviewing what was learnt during the day and coming

up with good questions to ask the next day.

Start studying with your difficult subjects first, then move onto your more enjoyable subjects.

Study in 20-30 minute blocks having a break between each one.

Phones and other devices should be charged in a common area, so they are not used to distract

from study or late at night.

Get a good night's sleep, teenagers generally need 8 –10 hours sleep a night.

Getting into routines at home for study will help your child succeed in the upcoming exams.

Y12 Kings Exchange. Music students entertaining in the Kings College chapel. Thank you Rosenberg

Lavea, Teuila Tuibenau, Ilaisaane Soane, Willie Brown and VJ Sua.

Artwork of the Week The Art Department has decided to share some of the amazing work done by our students. We will be running a weekly feature in the newsletter. Congratulations this week goes to Mahdi Hussaini In Year 12 for his extremely detailed, and finely carved Whakario board. Mahdi's designs are an adaption of tradition Maori patterning. Equally impressive is the work of Ali Hussaini, Mahdi’s younger brother, who is in Year 11. Both accomplished carvers, competition to be the best is strong between the brothers, and each regards their brother as their biggest rival.

Stem News STEM tutorials

Please remember to encourage your child to attend the tutorial sessions after school. These will be not

only be helpful for the upcoming exams but also their assessment and end of year NZQA exams.

Students have already been made aware of when their tutorials are on. Otahuhu College strives for

pupils to succeed which is why there are the staff and external tutors brought in for these. In order to

maximise this opportunity please ensure your child attends.

Year 13 Physics Trip

On Wednesday the Otahuhu College year thirteen Physics students went on a field trip to Rainbows End.

The purpose of this trip was to visualize forces and motion in action. A number of topics throughout

physics were investigated. Students examined and made calculations applied to the centripetal motion

of the log flume, they also explored the physics of the Stratofear, which combines vertical circular

motion and Simple Harmonic motion. Other concepts such as potential, rotational kinetic and

translational kinetic energy were observed in relation to the Invader ride. In this exciting excursion

pupils not only had the opportunity to see the ideas of Physics in action but also experience how Physics

can be used in the design and creating of an amusement park ride through Engineering. Finally as a

group they discussed the limitations and critiqued their own calculation processes. Overall the students

had an amazing first-hand experience of Science coming alive.
