Unified Communications (Currently, enterprise communication providers are working toward complementing the functionality of unified messaging solutions with technologies such as collaboration, personal assistant, and mobility applications to create a unified communication experience. They have added this functionality to message coordinators as opposed to directories)

• Unified Messaging: Builds on the proven functionality and value of voicemail by integrating it with other messaging channels including email and fax in a single mailbox that offers expanded message and contact management capabilities that can be accessed from PCs, TT telephones, and PDAs. (From an article by Scott Stone of Avaya, Inc. This definition is a good example and reflects the same idea put forth by other analysts and UM solution providers)

• Personal Assistant Services: Directory driven services that aid in call control and management for a user. Services are offered on a subscription basis to business professional consumers, but also are sometimes part of PBX services and systems. These services are usually accessed via the telephone and often include web interface management of inbound call preferences (routing, screening, caller id, call waiting). Some of these services also include access to conference bridging services.

Real-Time Multimedia Multi-party Conferencing

• PSTN / ISDN Conferencing: Any system or service that provides access to a telephone conferencing bridge or video conferencing system. We do not include all conference calling services (i.e., AT&T, MCI, Global Crossing) and systems (i.e., )in the landscape, though we recognize their presence in the market. Also, any traditional (e.g., H.320-based) video conferencing system vendors (i.e., Polycom, VCON) are not included though their presence is noted.

• IP Conferencing: Voice and Video Conferencing occurs only on the IP network, Excludes voice and video IP conferencing services and systems that only allow for 1:1 multimedia sessions.

Presence & Availability Management

• Corporate IM Systems: Server based internally deployed instant messaging for corporations. Usually deployed as part directory application, or within collaboration apps

• Presence: Includes publication, notification, and manual and dynamic modification of online, system and location-based presence.• Consumer IM Services: Internet Instant Messaging services that are offered on a free subscription basis. Most include VoIP as part of their offering,

but it is limited to 1:1 audio conferencing. A recent trend in this category is sending IM to wireless devices via SMS for example

Real-Time Data Collaboration Client / Server based solution. Servers are deployed internally at the enterprise site. Client software is either web-based or desktop software. Typically, the servers are standards-based (H.323 and T.120). Most offerings are PC based only (Voice and Video over IP), some include a conference bridge for PSTN audio conferencing. Typically, however, these solutions do not allow both IP and PSTN end-devices to participate in the same audio conference (PC for data conferencing and VoIP. Phone for audio conferencing that is not mixed with VoIP audio).

• Document Collaboration Systems: Includes, application sharing, application viewing and file-transfer. These sessions are more collaborative in nature for accomplishing group and team work projects.

• Moderated Presentations: Includes collaboration tools that are designed for moderated and/or broadcast presentations. Features include presentations, moderated session controls annotation tools, web-cobrowsing, remote desktop control and polling/Q&A.

• Web Conferencing Services: Hosted, web-based collaboration services that are offered on a paid subscription basis. Most of the services do not include integrated communication capabilities or directory services (presence information for example). Business professionals can purchase these services individually, or a company can choose to standardize corporate wide on the solution.
