Turgor Pressure
Goal: I will be able to explain why turgor
pressure is important to plant cells.
Markets spray their
vegetables with water, why?
Turgor Pressure
If the concentration of water is more outside a plant cell than inside water will enter the cell by osmosis
This fills up the cytoplasm and vacuole causing the plant cell to swell up against its cell wall
This outward pressure is called
turgor pressure
Under normal conditions
Under normal conditions turgor pressure
supports the plant keeping their stem and
leaves rigid
High concentrations of
solute outside the cell
Cause the water in the plant cell to
escape to create a balanced
concentration.
This causes the cytoplasm to pull
away from the cell wall and the
plant wilts and dies.

Question 1: What prevents a plant cell from bursting when it is full of water?
Question 2: What will happen to an animal cell when it is placed in distilled water? Why?
Question 3: Based on what you’ve learned about osmosis, explain why grocery stores spray their vegetables with water.
