OSLC Reconciliation and Healing: A Progress Report

by John Nelson, President & Pr. Larry E. Thomas

Last month we secured the consultation services of The Rev. Dr. Eldon Olson, ELCA pastor, pastoral counselor and former Director of Consultation to Clergy for the ELCA and LCMS churches of the Northwest. Pastor Olson, who also teaches at Seattle University, was referred to us by The Rev. Wm Chris Boerger, Bishop of the NW Washington Synod.

Pastor Olson has met twice with John Nelson, President of OSLC and Pastors Fletcher and Thomas. Our talks have been forthright and fruitful. This past week, Pastor Olson met with OSLC staff members and with the church council. On Sun-day, May 16, Pastor Olson facilitated a six hour church council retreat, along with Pastors Fletcher and Thomas.

We are grateful to God for sending us Pastor Olson and we believe that he will help our staff, council, and congregation work through our conflicts and divisions and work towards congregational health and unity. Please pray for our staff, our church council, and our congregation as we do this important work.

Church Council Budget Forum June 6 @ 9:45 am

In preparation for the June 13, 2010 congrega-tional meeting, John Nelson, church council president and Bruce Mathias, treasurer, together with other members of the church council will host a congregational budget forum on Sunday, June 6. The forum will be held between worship services at 9:45 a.m. in the church library. Every-one is welcome and encouraged to attend.

OSLC Annual Reports Available in the Narthex

Throughout the past year, OSLC committees have been hard at work leading us in worship, beautifying our building, weeding our gardens, providing food for those in need, spreading the good news of Jesus Christ, inviting people to OSLC, preparing the operating budget and overseeing its use, reaching out to others all over the globe and providing us fellowship opportunities within our worshipping commu-nity. Members of the OSLC council and committee chairs have diligently prepared reports of the activi-ties that their committees have done this past year. It is important that we (as members and friends of OSLC) read and keep ourselves aware of the hard work of the committees within this ministry. It keeps those that are working on committees accountable to the members they serve. OSLC staff members and OSL Preschool have also prepared reports that are included.

On May 30th, stop by the table in the narthex and pick up a copy of the 2009/2010 OSLC Annual Report. The Annual Meeting of the Congregation takes place on June 13th beginning at 11:00 a.m. (Please note we will have one worship service on Sunday, June 13th beginning at 9:45 a.m.) Members of the church council will be presenting the 2010/2011 OSLC mission and ministry budget for your review and ap-proval at this June 13th meeting.

Janet Heck, Parish Administrator

Praying the Lord's Prayer

Beginning Holy Trinity Sunday, May 30, we will pray the "traditional" version of the Lord's Prayer on Sunday mornings. We will continue this practice through Christ the King Sunday, November 21, 2010. On the first Sunday in Ad-vent (November 28, 2010) we will resume pray-ing the ecumenical version of the Lord's Prayer. It has been our practice to pray both versions of the Lord's Prayer over the course of a year: ap-proximately six months praying one version, and then, six months praying the other.

Summer Sunday Morning Worship Schedule Sunday, July 4, through Sunday September 5

We will begin our summer worship schedule on Sunday, July 4 with worship services at 8:30 a.m. and 10:00 am. This schedule will continue through Labor Day Weekend, Sunday, Septem-ber 5.

Ringers needed!

Memorial Bell Choir is going through growing pains this coming year. Three of our ringers need to take a year off, which is good news for you. We will miss their regular presence in the group, but it will also provide space for others to join in the fun. Extra time can be personally yours to get you up to speed on how to ring. Reading and un-derstanding music is very important. If you have an interest in ringing bells, please contact Alice (425) 432-0366.

OSLC 50th Anniversary Update

Guided by the overall mission of Our Savior Lutheran Church, and in the spirit of continuing our legacy of faith, hope, and love, the 50th Anniversary team will guide our congregation and the community towards joyful celebration in gratitude to God for the past 50 years, in recogni-tion of the present, and in hopeful love for the future.

Mark your calendars for this three-day celebration, Friday-Sunday, November 5-7, 2010. We invite you to share with us:

Names, addresses, and e-mail addresses of former members Memories (sentimental, humorous, celebrations, special events)

Your contributions may be left in the designated box in the narthex, or mailed to Judi Russell, c/o OSLC, 745 Front Street South, Issaquah, WA 98027. Watch for future updates and opportunities to participate and/or volunteer.

As Christians, an understanding of God’s word through the Scriptures is essential for all of us. But con-sidering studying the Bible as a whole can be daunting. Our OSLC library has some helpful study guides already on its shelves, but recently we have added four more that you may find helpful.

A Beginner’s Guide to the Books of the Bible by Diane L. Jacobson and Robert Kysar (220.61) Provides an overview to each book of the Bible, including a clear introduction, authorship, con-

tents and distinctive features. Also has introductions to larger sections such as major and minor prophets.

How to Read the Bible Book by Book by Gordon D. Fee and Douglas Stuart (220.6) Take a tour of the Bible, starting with a quick snapshot then expanding to aid understanding of

the key elements and how they fit into the total narrative of the Bible. The Bible Makes Sense by Walter Brueggemann (220.6) This is more than an introduction to major themes; it brings a biblical understanding of the

world leading to joy, life and wholeness. An Introduction to the Old Testament; a Feminist Perspective by Alice L. Laffey (221.6) May be used as a study of biblical interpretation from a feminist perspective or as a compara-

tive study alongside standard Old Testament introductions.

These and some of our other Bible study guides will be on display on the card catalog in the library. Come in and become familiar with them so that when you have need of a specific type of study help, you will know what the library has to offer. We hope these can aid you in your individual and class-room study.

As we wind our way to summer, I find it gratifying to look back over our times together in fellowship. From Lenten Suppers to Easter Brunch - we have come together to share Christ's peace and love. I want to take this time to thank all of you who have contributed time and talents to OSLC in the name of Fel-lowship.

In particular, chancel choir, council, youth and circle members who hosted Lenten suppers and brought us wonderful meals and the opportunity to learn more about each other in Jesus' name.

Easter Brunch this year served over 200 people. Considerable work and preparation goes into such an event, and I want to express deepest thanks to my 'team'. Connie Fletcher (those wonderful table scapes) Marilyn Carlson, Marilyn Larson, Paula Seeger, Mary Fricke, Chuck and Wendy Bachman - all provided time and hard work to help bring this celebration of His resurrection to our congregation. All the volunteers who donated food and beverages and helped with clean up made this a wonderful meal. And thank you to those of you who donated by way of funds and contributions - we are blessed indeed.

As you may have noticed, our coffee hour continues to be held after the first service. Budget constraints have a consideration in this consolidation. We are fully dependent upon volunteers to donate goodies and coffee supplies. Blessed thanks to Georgeanne Park for coffee contributions, Chuck Bachman for dairy and juice and a special big thanks to Shari (Carter) Lundberg for organizing bakers to bring these treats that you all love to sample each Sunday. In particular, the following people have either already donated or are scheduled to donate baked goods:

Nancy Peterson (4/11); Sandy Aldworth (4/18); Nancy Anderson (4/25); Shari Lundberg (5/2); Delores Bakamus (5/9); Maureen Lock (5/16); Sandy Aldworth (5/23); Darlene Boni (5/30)

If you would like to join the ranks of contributors, please contact Shari Lundberg to arrange dates. I con-tinue to set up each Saturday, and if you would like to assist with this please let me know!

Thank you all for making fellowship a priority at OSLC. I encourage you all to continue to reach out to both members and those who may be visiting OSLC. Share coffee, conversation and Christ's message!

Blessings on your day, Judi Russell

I would like to highlight the ladies of Altar Guild. This group sets our Lord's table every Sunday. Bread bakers bring their gifts to be offered up in His name each week. Other duties include hanging banners and changing paraments, cleaning communion ware and in general keeping the altar area clean and ready. If you would like to learn more about this service, please reach out to me, or one of the ladies of the Guild (their names are posted in the Sacristy). Special thanks to those newest members of our Guild: Marilyn Larson, Leslie Waltzer and Jane Wuest. And a special debt of gratitude to Diane Nelson, our purchaser and keeper of altar veils.

Peace in Christ, Judi Russell

Midweek Campfire Worship

The OSLC Midweek Campfire Worship series is returning for another summer, and there is noth-ing quite like gathering around a warm campfire on a cool summer evening. From July 21st through August 18th, OSLC will hold a special series of campfire worship times on the front lawn of the church. Fixings for hot dogs and SMORES will be provided. Just bring yourself, something to sit on and a friend. We will gather each week on Wednesday at 6 p.m. Look for com-plete details in the OSLC summer events bro-chure ― available on the wooden pamphlet rack outside the church office door.

June 20

This event is an OSLC tradition that you don’t want to miss. At 1:00 p.m. on June 20th, we will gather at Tibbits Valley Park for an afternoon of good food and friendly competition. Grills will be provided for hamburgers, hotdogs, veggie burgers, and whatever else you might bring. Side dishes and desserts are shared potluck style. And whether you are a spectator or a participant, the game is plenty of fun. From elementary school on up, all are welcome to play in the game.

Tacoma Rainiers Game August 15th

Join us for a big family friendly dose of summer baseball with the Tacoma Rainiers on Sunday, August 15th. The Rainiers are the minor league affiliate (AAA) of the Seattle Mariners. For only $10 per person, you get entrance to the game, a hot dog, chips, and a drink. The game starts at 1:30 p.m., so we will leave by carpool from the OSLC parking lot at noon. These games are great fun, and the price can’t be beat! To sign- u p e m a i l P a s t o r R y a n a t [email protected] or look for more information in Anderson Hall.
