• Zapatero inaugurates the Special Regime Control Centre - The first centre in the world specialising in the integration of wind energy

• Today, (World Environment Day), the President of the Spanish Government, José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero inaugurated the Special Regime Control Centre (SRCC), together with Luis Atienza, president of Red Eléctrica de España. This is the first centre in the world specialising in the integration of wind energy for an electrical system operator and transmitter.

• The SRCC centre, located in the Red Eléctrica headquarters, has the mission of facilitating the maximum integration of renewable energy and in particular, wind energy, at all times, and under safe conditions.

• Since 2000, the installed wind energy power in Spain has been multiplied by five, increasing from 2,298 to 11,915 MW as of May 2007. This shows that wind energy has become an important renewable energy in recent years and is playing an increasingly more important role in covering electricity demands. In 2006, wind produced 9% of all electricity consumed in Spain.

• However, the Spanish electrical system is too isolated from the interconnected European system, which poses difficulties in its capacity to take full advantage of renewable energies. In Spain, the system has an interconnection capacity to cover barely 3% of demand, as opposed to 40% in Denmark and 12% in Germany. If our interconnection level were higher, we would have greater capacity to share our variable wind energy contribution with a larger electrical network.

• Through this wind energy management tool, from June 30 2007, Spain will be the first country in the world to have all its wind farms generating more than 10 MW connected up to a control centre.

• The SRCC centre, designed by technicians from Red Eléctrica, aims to integrate generation under the special regime into the electrical system, and ensure that it is compatible with it in terms of safety. In the words of Atienza, “through this initiative, Red Eléctrica has risen to the challenge of occupying first place with respect to the management and integration capacity of wind energy in the mainland Spain electrical system, under stable conditions”.
