Expanding our impact OLLI @Berkeley by the numbers

  • At OLLI @Berkeley, we never stop growing. Every day, on campus and in the community, we find new ways to learn, engage and contribute. Your sentiments expressed in the OLLI classrooms, surrounding cafes, Annual Member surveys and individual course evaluations speak volumes about the import that OLLI has in your life. This Annual Report is one small, collective way for us to take stock of the year and to appreciate what we’ve built together.

A friend recently became a premium member and recounted how moved they were by the OLLI experience and the respectful dynamic in the exchanges between faculty and members, and among members themselves. Let’s never take that for granted.

The milestones and achievements we’ve attained this year are clear: more courses, more speaker events, more community gatherings and more campus collaborations — in classrooms, in research labs and in the engineering of technical innovations.

    We are making a difference.

As donors, volunteer leaders and learners, our members have made the campus and community increasingly age-friendly, powered by a stronger vision for the future. It is a future that better understands lifetimes and lifespans and how, at any age, we can continue to grow, learn and make a meaningful difference in the world.

    With deep respect and gratitude,

  • Making our mark on researchWe continued to expand our research arm in 2018-2019, nurturing both new and ongoing collaborations with our UC Berkeley campus partners and others. In late summer 2019, we co-hosted the second annual Aging Research and Technology Summit, bringing together 250 leading researchers, academics, technologists, caregivers and older adult advocates — a rare cross-pollination of ideas and voices. This year’s theme was “Disrupting Neurodegenerative Diseases.” Along with hearing keynotes from UC Chancellor Carol Christ and former Director of the National Institute of Mental Health, Thomas Insel, participants also learned about innovations designed to thwart or mitigate the effects of Alzheimers and other diseases. OLLI members helped to further the development of three of these promising breakthroughs thanks to their involvement in testing and research.

Highlights A year of learning, engaging and contributing

A team comprised of OLLI member Rani Cochran and four undergraduates from the UCB Fung Fellowship for Wellness and Technology was awarded 1st Place in the 2018-2019 Stanford Center on Longevity Design Challenge: “Contributing at Every Age: Designing for Intergenerational Impact.” The team began its work in fall 2018 and in January 2019 was notified that it was one of eight finalists selected from 97 submissions representing 24 countries.

  • In 2018-2019, we held three Fourth Age Salons, an ongoing program for OLLI members who are 75 years or older. Our presenters — Peter Ralston (UCSF), Debbie Burke (Pomona College) and Donald MacKay (UCLA) — spoke about aspects of aging on memory, hearing, language and sense of self.

In May 2019, we were delighted to present our third annual OLLI @Berkeley Excellence in Teaching and Learning Award to Linda Rugg, UC Associate Vice Chancellor for Research and Professor of Swedish Literature in the Scandinavian Department and a beloved OLLI instructor. This award is given annually to a UC Berkeley faculty member who teaches at OLLI and who has demonstrated an ongoing commitment to engaged learning.

We are supported by powerhouse volunteers who, in 2018-2019, organized field trips to the Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive, a baseball game (Go A’s!), and the Oakland Museum of California; brought the community together for numerous Happy Hours; and supported an ever expanding roster of clubs.

In June 2019, we hosted a Donor and Volunteer Appreciation Celebration to thank our most dedicated members. We also honored Lucille Poskanzer, a volunteer leader, with a Lifetime OLLI Membership for her years of service, advice and support.

OLLI members took their passports and love of learning on educational excursions led by OLLI faculty — a trip to Chile with Alex Saragoza in February 2019 and a Celtic Lands/D-Day cruise with Darren Zook in June 2019. Cal Discoveries arranged the travel.

    Exploring the world

    Honoring our own

    Building community

  • The university budgets year to year so when we have a surplus we put it into a reserve fund. In 2017, we established an FFE with $500,000 of these accumulated reserve funds from our then 11-year history. Currently, we’re working with the university to contribute an additional $100,000 to the FFE as a result of one-time salary savings from temporarily unfilled staff positions. This will allow the FFE to grow to $600,000 and accrue an interest payment that will contribute annually to our budget going forward.

Fiscal stability: Fund Functioning as an Endowment (FFE)

IRA rollover gifts and other planned gifts are excellent ways to make meaningful contributions to a program you love and to help sustain our community of lifelong learners for many years to come. Visit planyourlegacy.berkeley.edu for helpful tips on making your gift or contact the Office of Gift Planning at 800.200.0575 or [email protected].
