Drs. Norbert Haas, Jens Chapman, Thomas Ruedi at Summit in Seattle

Dear UW Orthopaedics Community,

This has been a most memorable sum-mer in Seattle. The near record-set-ting string of consecutive sunny days here has been accompanied by an all time record-setting number of cases for our Trauma, Hand, Foot & Ankle and Spine services at Harborview. As if we weren’t busy enough clinically we had great attendance at our 3rd An-nual Summit in Seattle: Focus on Hip and Pelvic Disorders chaired by Sam Agnew, Howard Chansky, ML ‘ Chip’ Routt and Lisa Taitsman as well as the 8th Annual James Garrick Lectureship in Sports Medicine. We were honored by the presence of truly outstanding visiting lecturers and the many return-ing alumni and friends of our Depart-ment.

We are very pleased to have Joe Fiori-to, DPM expand the options of our Limb Salvage team at HMC. Our new Comprehensive Joint Care program under direction of Howard Chansky with Justin Klimish, Seth Leopold,

Paul Manner and TJ Tanous Jr. has also started to pick up sig-nificant momentum at various practice sites throughout our sys-tem. As to new faculty arrivals, we welcome Jason Ko (left) to our

combined Hand and Upper Extremity Service courtesy of our Plastic surgery colleagues and Reza Firoozabadi (right) to our Fracture and Trauma service with his special interest in pelvic and acetabular surgery. At UWMC we wished Chris Wahl well for his new role as Sports Medi-cine director at UCSD while we wel-comed Albert Gee as a new partner in our Sports Medicine clinic. All of us are anxiously awaiting the completion of our new ‘Stadium Sports Medicine Clinic’ to coincide with the start of next football season. The plans for the interior design of this new clinic were recently presented for the first time and show an impressive vision of the future for an integrative approach to Sports Medicine with tangible benefits to patient care, injury prevention and (legal) performance improvement.

Great news also from our residents and fellows: All of our Parts 1 and 2 candi-dates passed their exams successfully, some with highly impressive results.

Congratulations to our newest mem-bers of the UW Orthopaedics alumni

group and a special ‘thank you’ to our Program director Doug Hanel (and his wife Peggy) as well as Lisa Taitsman and Angela Weiss who are instrumen-tal in making our Department such a destination program for future Ortho-paedic residents. Our new R-2s and Interns as well as our Fellows / ACES met the summer challenges in stride and did a fabulous job representing our Department. The new orientation and onboarding procedures, while onerous looking and certainly time consuming, seem to have had a tremendously ben-eficial effect on easing the way in. So, please join me in welcoming our new partners and colleagues as you see them around our UW Medicine facili-ties and see if there is anything we can do to make them feel at home here.

Thank you for your interest and sup-port,

Jens R. Chapman, M.D.

The “Third Annual Summit in Seattle: Focus on Hip and Pelvis Disorders” was held at Harborview Medical Center July 26th through 28th as a UW-CME Program to an audience of 113 at-tendees. Our Chairs - Drs. Howard Chansky and M.L. Chip Routt - put together an outstanding program, and deserve our gratitude. We were privileged to have a stellar visiting faculty, including Drs. Daniel Altman (Pittsburgh), W. Woodie Cross (Mayo Clinic), Norbert Haas (Berlin), Bryan Kelly (New York, NY), Keith Mayo (Tacoma Regional Trauma Center), Samir Mehta (University of Pennsylvania, and Thomas Ruedi (Davos, Switzerland).

This unique three-day event provid-ed attendees with the opportunity to catch up on state-of-the-art medical updates through CME lectures from true authorities, experience case-based conferences, and become knowledgeable about the latest in UW Orthopaedic research through ACE/Fellows presentations. The meeting also featured live interac-tive surgical technique demonstra-tions, and the symposium format of the lectures provided for unparal-leled learning exposure delivered by true masters of their fields.

We were honored to have Dr. Jens Chapman kick off the weekend with the welcome speech. A memorial lecture was held on Satur-day in honor of Dr. Kathryn Cramer (1991-’92 Trauma ACE who passed away in 2005).

The meeting provided a setting for informal Fellowship reunions on Thursday’s opening night, a for-mal dinner and Fellowship/ACE graduation event at Columbia Tower in downtown Seattle Friday night, and a reception and post-event party Saturday night.

The inaugural Summit in Seattle Research Award was presented

to Dr. Thomas Large (pictured at right) for his work titled, “Interobserver Reliability in the Measurment of Lower Leg Compartment Pres-sures.”

For those who missed this unique event, please tune into to the “Summit in Seattle 3: Focus on Hip and Pelvic Disorders” lectures on UWTV towards the end of the year. If interested in receiving a formal boxset of all videos for a nomial fee, please contact Harborview Secretary Senior, Melanie Kanna ([email protected]).

The 2013 Summit in Seattle event has been scheduled for July 25-27, 2013 in the R&T Building Auditorium at HMC. The SIS-4 Focus will be “Knee Disorders” with local chairs Drs. How-ard Chansky and Lisa Taitsman, as well as Alumni chair Dr. Sam Agnew.

‘I saw my leg was a mangled mess’ Dr. Smith feautured on Komo 4 News

Page 7

During the evening KOMO 4 News seg-ment on Monday, August 6, 2012, Dr. Doug Smith’s trauma work was highlight-ed.

A motorcycle accident near Mt. Rainier caused Mark Hall to lose his lower right leg. Hall was airlifted to Haborview Medi-cal Center and placed under the care of Dr. Smith. Dr. Smith performed surgery which allowed Mark to keep his knee joint.

“The decision was made to try to save his

thigh and his knee, if we could,” Dr. Smith explained. “He will have trouble getting his knee moving though...over the next year with the muscle damage.”

Even though Mark may have a longer re-covery time, he is expected to have greater mobility in the long run.

“We always look at limbs with the hope of saving a limb that can have some func-tion,” stated Dr. Smith.

Dr. Smith spoke to the rise of patients los-ing limbs. He conducts two-to-four am-putations each week; more than half are trauma related. The rationale, as described by Dr. Smith: “people can tend to be risk takers.”

Mark Hall’s story is an example of the exemplary care received by patients at HMC. KOMO-TV news reporter, Denise Whitaker, and her husband became aware of Mark when they came upon the acci-dent scene while on their own motorcycle excursion. They assisted at the scene and visisted Mark following his recovery at Harborview. Mark raved to them about the world class care he was recieving and what a model place HMC was.

Fellow Jennifer Hsu, M.D. spoke at the ASSH Annual Meeting in Chicago on Sep-tember 5th. She presented a retrospective case study looking at long term outcomes following multiple toe-to-hand transfers for patients who had lost all, or nearly all, the fingers due to trauma. All three patients included in the study were satisfied with their results.

Congratulations to Theresa Jones and Mary Turner for completing the Danskin Triathalon this past August!

Congratualtions to Drs. Justin Klimisch and TJ Tanous for passing your oral boards! Both Drs. are now board certified.

Dr. Ronald Kwon, an Assistant Professor within the Department of Orthopaedics and Sports Medicine, is one of five faculty within the Orthopaedic Science Laboratories, a multi-disciplinary research group focused on musculoskeletal biology. A National Science Foundation Graduate Fellow, he obtained his Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering from Stanford University and more recently completed a National Institutes of Health NRSA Postdoctoral Fellowship at the La Jolla Bioengineering Institute. He has been recognized with several formal awards include

Young Investigator Awards from the American Society of Bone and Mineral Research and the International Bone Fluid Flow Workshop.

Dr. Kwon’s multi-disciplinary background has led him to develop a unique research approach which merges molecular and cellular biology, imaging, computation, and mechanics. Currently, his research focuses on developing systems biology-based ap-proaches to investigate neuro-musculoskeletal processes. For this, he uses a variety of experimental systems including computational, cell culture, and animal models. In re-gard to the latter, one of his main areas of focus is in developing high-throughput and high-content approaches to study musculoskeletal processes in zebrafish (small tropical freshwater fish which are highly amenable to such approaches). More information about his research can be seen at his research blog: http://blogs.uw.edu/ronkwon/

When he is not imaging fish or writing computer programs, he enjoys surfing, spending time with his wife Joyce and their dog Kayla, eating good vegetarian food, and enjoying all of the great things that Seattle has to offer.
