The Purpose of the this document is to show you how to link the .IES files to the Orlight Revit Families.

Firstly, the Orlight Revit Families created are to be used so that accurate representation of the photometric performance can be realized in Revit.

The files themselves are to recreate the photometric behavior of Orlight products rather than be photorealistic models, this is because it is important to keep the file size of the Revit families to a minimum to keep Revit project sizes to a manageable level. In any case, the files are representative of the physical dimensions of the products so they can be used for clash detection as well as being used for accurate drawings.

The files contain photometric data in the form of a linked .IES file. The photometric data has been created by Orlights in house laboratory team and as such represents exactly how the product behaves in reality.

In order for the Revit Families to work you must save the IES files in a specific folder in the Revit project directory, instructions for this overleaf.

STEP 01 After saving the Orlight Revit Family Pack locally to your PC please select the family that you want to use within your model, in this example, we are going to load in the EZENTIAL181 and the link the .IES files to the model so you can have the choice of the many variants for that product.

The EZENTIAL181 is found in the Commercial – Downlights folder as shown on the right.

STEP 02 Once opened you are presented with the product as a Revit Family, its appearance is basic but in keeping with the physical dimensions.

It is important to link the IES file before loading into a project.

Please press the ‘Family Types’ button highlighted and circled on the right.

This will present you with the variations for the product.

The Products can come in a multitude of finishes and colours however for the purpose of Revit Families and for your modelling Orlight have produced a standard fitting.

STEP 03 In the ‘Family Types’ you can chose the variants for the EZENTIAL181 by looking at the options in ‘Type Name’ as highlighted and circled on the right.

For this product we can select variants in the form of the colour temperatures, in the example on the right it is showing 6000K.

We will now need to link in the .IES file for this variant in order for it to be associated with the EZENTIAL181-6000K

STEP 04 The Orlight Revit Families only link to IES files that are located in a specific folder in the Autodesk directory. This is important to locate where the installed files for Revit are on your PC.

Generally these can be found in:

Program Data > Autodesk > RVT 2017 > IES

At this point please Paste in all the IES Folders from the Orlight Revit Family Pack.

The example on the right hand side shows this, you can clearly see that there is a folder named EZENTIAL181 and this is the same name as the family that has been opened.

Every Orlight Revit Family has a folder of the same name in the IES folder to be linked in this same process when needed to be loaded into a project.

STEP 05 now the IES files are loaded into the required directory, Revit will be able to link the Family to the specified IES file.

The image on the right shows a field called ‘Photometric Web File’ and then to the right of that field is another column where you can Link the .IES file.

Please click on the field to the right of the ‘Photometric Web File’ to be presented with the list of folders that have the IES data.

In this EXAMPLE please chose the folder EZENTIAL181 to which this opens up the and shows various IES files relating to the colour temperature of the EZENTIAL181.

STEP 06 Please select the EZENTIAL181-6000K

Please press Apply and Okay in the ‘Family Types’ window

This is now a successful link to the IES file

STEP 07 The EZENTIAL181 can now be loaded into a project.

In the ‘Systems Tab’ click the ‘Lighting Fixture’ that is circled and highlighted to the right.

STEP 08 Select the ‘Place on face’ selection and then click the Load Family Tab as highlighted and circled to the right.

STEP 09 From whatever location you have saved the Orlight Revit Families please locate these and then filter to the EZENTIAL181.RFA file as shown to the right.

STEP 10 The Revit family for the EZENTIAL181 should be loaded into the project with the variants loaded in also.

It is important to realise that the variants for colour temperatures 3000K and 4000K are loaded but the IES file for these aren’t linked, in order to use these in Renders please link the IES file.

A lot of supporting information for the Orlight Product can be found in ‘Edit Type’ highlighted and circled. This displays significant information such as links to the website, Photometric details such as Lumen outputs and Wattage, dimming protocols, and chipset data.
