The Power of Purpose
NOBIS WORKSANNUAL REPORT
FOUNDERS BOBBIE KNOPF & TOMMY NOBIS
TO DEVELOP AND PROVIDE JOB TRAINING, EMPLOYMENT AND VOCATIONAL SUPPORT FOR YOUTH AND ADULTS WITH DISABILITIES AND OTHER BARRIERS TO EMPLOYMENT.
MISSION
In his book The Power of Purpose, author Richard Leider defines
purpose as that deepest dimension within us that tells us who we
are, why we’re here and where we’re going. Purpose fills us with
passion, drive and direction.
Certainly we were fueled with that sense of purpose 36 years ago
when we launched a job training program that today is among
Georgia’s largest trainers and employers of people with disabilities.
Over the years, we’ve helped more than 24,000 individuals achieve
increased confidence and independence through meaningful
work. Our approach focuses on each individual, matching abilities
with employer needs while providing services to support all phases
of the employment process.
We encourage you to explore these pages and learn about the
passion and drive that power each of our clients, employees and
community partners. We know you’ll be inspired as you learn from
their stories about that deepest dimension within.
Thank you,
TOMMY NOBIS ATLANTA FALCONS #60 1966–1976

The Nobis Works mission is fueled by a simple belief –
when people are filled with the power of purpose, they
can accomplish anything. That power of purpose surely
was our driving force in 2013, a year that brought significant
challenges from every direction.
Our primary funding source for job training – Georgia
Vocational Rehabilitation Agency – exhausted its budget
for new client services, resulting in fewer client referrals. We
served 694 youth and adults with disabilities and other
barriers to employment, 30 percent fewer than in 2012. And
we found meaningful jobs for 110 individuals, not even half
as many as we’d placed in 2012.
Solution: Our Rehabilitation Services team moved swiftly
to create and implement an innovative program of Private
Pay Services: vocational evaluation, work evaluation, work
adjustment and more. The community responded and this
new program is growing at a healthy pace.
The federal government’s budget sequestration began
in March 2013. These spending cuts impacted our
government contracting division, Nobis Enterprises (NE),
with decreased funding and some layoffs of NE employees.
Solution: NE staff pursued new federal and state contracts,
expanding HUD administrative services to 18 locations in 16
states, capitalizing on our Georgia State Use drug testing kit
project and more.
Reworx, our electronics recycling social enterprise launched
in 2009 employs more than 60 individuals who process
around one million pounds of e-waste each month. Reworx
encountered problems with certain recycling equipment
and was forced to work legally to rectify the unfortunate
circumstances. To add to these challenges, commodity
prices took a plunge and decreased the value of our
processed inventory.
Solution: Reworx created a partnership with DISH to recycle
all of the pay-tv provider’s U.S. satellite receivers and related
electronics. Also, Reworx recruited a renowned general
manager who began implementing Six Sigma and LEAN
manufacturing practices, resulting in more efficient processes
and faster output. Finally, the team initiated the process to
acquire e-Stewards Certification, the highest standard of
environmental responsibility and worker protection.
We invite you to read on for details of what we’ve
accomplished in 2013, despite the many hurdles encountered.
See how our strong sense of purpose for our mission has had
a powerful, positive effect. Only when our focus – our purpose
– is larger than ourselves can meaning be deeply savored
and long lasting.
With deep gratitude for you all,
A LETTER FROM ALEX AND CONNIE

OUR CLIENTS
WE FOCUS ON ABILITIES AT NOBIS WORKS, PROVIDING JOB TRAINING AND FINDING OR CREATING MEANINGFUL JOBS FOR INDIVIDUALS WITH DISABILITIES AND OTHER BARRIERS TO EMPLOYMENT.
How we do it:
Tommy Nobis Center, our job training and employment service is headquartered in Marietta, Ga.
Only one third of our clients actually train at the Tommy Nobis Center facility. Most receive “real
world” training, with a Nobis Works site supervisor at community work sites such as warehouses
and grocery stores.
Rehabilitation Services professionals provided job training and employment services in 2013 for
694 youth and adults with disabilities. They placed 110 individuals in the workforce, turning tax
consumers into tax payers and full participants in the community.
Nobis Enterprises provides business solutions for federal, state and local governments. Employees
with severe disabilities provide administrative, mailroom, janitorial and other support services.
In 2013, Nobis Enterprises’ team delivered administrative services to 23 HUD offices in 15 states,
provided mailroom management services to Atlanta’s Centers for Disease Control & Prevention
(CDC) and administrative support for the Department of Justice in five Georgia cities. Nobis
Enterprises saw great success in the first year of its program to distribute Drug Test Kits statewide
to numerous State of Georgia agencies.
Business Solutions allows businesses to open doors of opportunity while receiving cost effective,
high quality production and fulfillment solutions. Our 39,000-sq.-ft. facility is equipped with six
loading docks, forklifts, shrink wrappers, heat sealers and L-sealers. Our team offers kit packing,
assembly, light manufacturing, warehousing/distribution and more.
Café Blends: Blending Autism into the Workplace is a partnership with Asbury Automotive Group.
Nobis Works hires, trains and supports young adults on the autism spectrum as baristas at five
dealerships in Georgia, Florida and South Carolina. Nalley Automotive Group, Asbury’s Atlanta
group of dealerships gives baristas the opportunity to serve customers at Nalley Lexus-Roswell,
Nalley Lexus-Galleria and Toyota of Roswell while educating dealership employees about autism.
Plans are in place to offer more Café Blends locations in 2014.
Reworx is a social enterprise created to provide sustainable electronics recycling jobs for people
with disabilities and other barriers, and to generate revenue to maintain and grow Nobis Works.
The result: a triple bottom line … a social mission of providing jobs for people with disabilities, an
environmental mission of protecting the planet and an economic mission of giving back to the
community by removing individuals from public assistance and creating tax payers.

SUCCESS STORY: Emily ShimanskiU.S. DEPT. OF HOUSING & URBAN DEVELOPMENT
(HUD)
Nobis Enterprises is the Nobis Works program in which employees with varying disabilities perform work for the federal government. Last year, Nobis Enterprises became the sole provider for HUD’s administrative contracts in 23 locations throughout 15 states, from Alaska to Florida.
Emily, a Wisconsin native joined the HUD team in Denver in 2012 as a Nobis Enterprises employee. She processes mail, assembles packages, and performs data entry. Originally from Madison, Wis., Emily is a graduate of Eastern Illinois University and an avid runner.
Emily has accomplished much but, given her nonverbal learning disability, Emily is challenged to complete some tasks. Because hers is often referred to as an
“invisible disability,” others may not understand the cause of this challenging issue for Emily. She is a great example of how people with these invisible disabilities are capable of learning, adapting, contributing, and achieving great success in their lives.
Emily says, “I’m successful at meeting goals, determined to overcome obstacles. I rise to meet my challenges, working hard and training to be mentally ready to give 100 percent at work. I enjoy working for Nobis and HUD; it’s helped me to grow as a person. My job has definitely given me confidence and a sense of independence. I thoroughly enjoy the daily contribution I make to my team and hope to be here for a long time!”
SUCCESS STORY: Reworx and DISH partner
TO PROVIDE OPPORTUNITY
Reworx, our electronics recycling social enterprise, launched a partnership in 2013 with DISH to recycle all of the pay-tv provider’s retired satellite receivers and related electronics from throughout the U.S. Once a set-top box is no longer viable, Reworx sorts, breaks down and recycles or resells materials like plastics and precious metals.
“Reworx not only furthers DISH’s sustainability endeavors by keeping nearly all received materials out of landfills, but it also yields another critical byproduct: opportunity,” said Jim LaRocque, DISH SVP of Service. “Reworx provides much-needed second chances by putting individuals to work.”
Last year alone, Reworx employed 67 individuals, resulting in an economic impact of more than $961,000 in taxes paid and reductions in public assistance.
Kelley Ferguson, Reworx shipping and receiving coordinator, shares her perspective on the partnership, saying Reworx provides opportunities from which she believes her daughter will one day benefit.
“This company has always had a special place in my heart,” says Kelley. “I have a special needs daughter so I really believe in this cause. One day I feel sure my daughter will be in the program, so she’ll be able to conquer … in the workforce.”
PLEASE JOIN US AS WE BRING THE POSITIVE POWER OF PURPOSE TO PEOPLE WITH DISABILITIES AND OTHER BARRIERS, THROUGH OUR TRIPLE MISSION: PEOPLE. PLANET. PURPOSE.

e-Stewards Certification Process Initiated This year, Reworx began the process to acquire
e-Stewards Certification, demonstrating we adhere to the highest standard of environmental
responsibility and worker protection. In other words, we do it right. This prestigious stamp of
approval is “all-in-one,” encompassing a certified ISO 14001 environmental management
system and R2 (Responsible Recycling) practices, certifications that Reworx achieved in 2012.
Reworx Partners with DISH to Recycle Electronics, Create Second Chances Reworx
launched a partnership with DISH to dismantle the Fortune 200 company’s retired satellite
receivers and related electronics so the materials can be recycled in a responsible manner.
The initial DISH project included destroying 60,000 pounds of receivers and provided work
for 20 individuals for almost a month.
New General Manager Implements Six Sigma Efficiencies Steve Gomez joined Nobis
Works in 2013 as Reworx general manager. Steve has overall responsibility for all Reworx
Operations and P&L, holds national certificates in Lean Manufacturing and received his Six
Sigma Black Belt certification. He wasted no time improving systems and processes, resulting
in more efficient output and increased revenues to help fund the Nobis Works mission.
Board Junkies Open Doors for Reworx Reworx created the “Board Junkies” program in
2011 to encourage and reward board members who open doors that lead to securing
electronic waste. The success of Reworx has been in large part a result of the confidence
shown by our board members and the initiatives they’ve influenced. Many thanks to our
board members from Southern Company/Georgia Power; WellStar; Bardi Heating, Cooling
& Plumbing; Kennesaw State University; The Home Depot; Gerdes Huff Investments, Deloitte,
Marietta Power & Water and more. Our Board Junkies’ referrals are among the program’s
strongest marketing tools.
In today’s environment of dwindling government funding, nonprofits
realize more than ever the importance of creating social enterprises.
A social enterprise is an organization that applies commercial strategies
to help power the nonprofit’s mission, rather than maximizing profits for
shareholders.
Reworx, the electronics recycling social enterprise launched in 2009 to
create jobs for people with disabilities and other barriers has exceeded
all expectations. In 2013 alone, Reworx received more than 10 million pounds of e-waste destined for landfills, and employed 67+ individuals.

SUCCESS STORY: Brian BemisderferINVENTORY SPECIALIST, REWORX
Whether finding ways to improve inventory processes on the job or enjoying his favorite pastime attending outdoor events like concerts, ballgames or visiting friends and family, Brian is going to have fun. This Toccoa, Ga. native always has a great attitude and shows genuine concern for his department.
“I’ve worked since I was 13,” says Brian. “But when I had an ATV accident 12 years ago and began using a wheelchair, it was hard to find a job with an employer who wasn’t familiar with my abilities. Then I discovered the Georgia Vocational Rehabilitation Agency. They recognized my capabilities and helped me find an employer whose mind was open enough to let me prove myself. I landed at Reworx one year ago and I really like the consistency of the job and the fact that this company gave me the chance to prove my abilities to do the job and finish it as efficiently as I know how. I work alongside some good people and we’re supervised by some good supervisors.”
Brian’s coworkers describe this team player as one who always is driven hard and thinks outside the box. He adapts to changes quickly and overcomes any obstacle. In fact, Brian’s coworkers thought enough of him to select him as a Shining Star Employee of the Quarter in 2013!
SUCCESS STORY: Chris Moak COURTESY CLERK, KROGER
Chris’s journey can be described as determined with a purpose. Chris started out weighing three and a half pounds. He is still “petite” in size, but large in personality. Chris experienced various surgeries in his early years, tube feedings until age 17, and earned an education with a learning disability. After hard work and loving support from family, teachers and friends, Chris graduated with a regular High School Diploma. While this is one of Chris’s biggest accomplishments, he is most proud of earning the Eagle Scout rank and being elected to the Order of the Arrow by his peers.
Thanks to his training at Nobis Works, Chris is now an Atlanta Kroger employee. He was promoted this year to Scan-rite, and even bought his own home. In the background, Chris’s parents and brother R.A. have been right there, encouraging and teaching Chris through the years.
Chris would not be where he is today without the support of his family and the training provided by Nobis Works and Kroger. Chris loves his job and wants someday to be Kroger’s CEO. Chris, that power of purpose deep within may just get you there!
