A GREAT RUNSubmitted by Patrick Fogarty Catholic Secondary School

The goal - qualify for OFSAA and make it to the final group of 5 on the last day. From there, anything can happen.

The Patrick Fogarty Catholic Secondary School's Boys Lacrosse Team finished the season 8-2-1. They won the 'All-Catholics Championships' in Georgetown and had a top-4 finish in the Trent University tournament.

Looking for their 3rd straight GBSSA title, they traveled to take on Huntsville High School.

"Offense moved the ball really well and had excellent spacing," said coach Dave Pellarin, adding it was a full team effort.

Defense coach Genicko Galvan worked hard with the group this year and it really paid dividends against Huntsville. Max Crowder, Blake Griffiths, Matt Bunker and Logan Matthews had solid performances on 'D'. Both goalies had an excellent game as well with Tyler Gysbers' mobility causing fits for Huntsville.

Justin LeBlanc won some huge face-offs to initiate possession - vital in field lacrosse.

Huntsville only scored one goal in their half-field offense which allowed Fogarty's offense to go to work.

Mitchell Pellarin notched 7 goals with Liam McCrimmon, Ben Trumble and Noah Quarrington adding one each as Patrick Fogarty beat Huntsville 10-6 for the GBSSA title - qualifying for OFSAA.

Competition proved tough, but the boys made it to the final group of 5 at the OFSAA's in Ottawa.

In fact, they made it to the Bronze medal game. "we were alone with the goalie with seconds left in regulation but goalie made the save and we lost in OT," said coach Pellarin.

Still, the end result, an 'antique bronze' (4th at OFSAA), fantastic.

Coach Pellarin also acknowledges the invaluable contributions this year made by coach Alexandra Clarke.

A great run from a great group of students and parents.

SheCANPlaySubmitted by Twin Lakes Secondary School

In late-May, two students from Twin Lakes Secondary School - Alise Artichuk and Dana Long - held their first ever

'SheCANPlay' event at The Heights Ski and Country Club.

Their goal was to foster and build strong healthy relationships between girls and women in our sporting community. They promoted female lifelong participation in sport.

To kick off this amazing event, the girls headed outside with Melissa White from Peak Performance for an active component. The girls participated in Melissa’s challenge by choice workout, thankfully the weather allowed them to enjoy the outdoors. After a water break, everyone regrouped on the grass for some yoga with Sue Sincere from Kind Living Yoga.

After theses activities the girls unified, connecting with one another. And with open minds, the girls were able to enjoy three guest speakers; Soren Meeuwisse, Camille Vibert and Thyme Thompson, as they had great stories to share. They watched the award winning film "Pretty Faces" starring a wicked all-female cast.

Alise and Dana encouraged everyone to participate at their own comfort level and to have fun as they said “remember, SheCANPlay...EVERYTHING!”

To close the night they asked the girls to pull out their wishlet, an accessory donated by a local business. They asked everyone to “Close your eyes, make a wish, then tie this wishlet on your wrist, ankle, or bag. When it falls off or the thread wears through, the wish you made may soon come true! Wear your wishlet as a reminder to follow your heart and believe in your dreams. It may be weeks, months or years before your wishlet falls away.”

Following up with the event Alise and Dana commented, “We hope each participant's goals are achieved, they continue to support one another and they were truly inspired by our event”.

LAKEHEAD'S

LINE UPSubmitted by Lakehead University - Orillia

L akehead University landed in Orillia in September of 2006.

LU has a three-tiered athletics program offering various levels of competition for our athletes to participate in: Varsity, Extramural/Club, and Intramural.

The 'Thunderwolves' have a strong and mighty mascot, 'Wolfie', supporting the athletes at events and games.

LU's Varsity program competes in the OCAA (Ontario Colleges Athletic Association) against colleges and university satellite campuses. Lakehead Orillia’s Varsity program offers Men’s and Women’s Indoor Soccer and Men’s and Women’s Golf.

Extramural sport, that play in OCAA, provides students with the ability to play a competitive sport but with not as much commitment as Varsity. Teams practice once a week and

compete in tournaments during the year. The Extramural sports currently offered are hockey and basketball, each with Men’s and Women’s teams.

The Club teams compete in the OCR

(Ontario Collegiate Recreational) and have similarities to Extramural just not a large commitment with the students still able to compete in tournaments. Club teams are Dance and Equestrian.

Finally, Lakehead-Orillia's Inter-Campus (intramural) sports allow students to play at a recreational, non-competitive level against other students to help stay active and have fun on campus. The Intramural programming can consist of ultimate frisbee, ball hockey, softball, volleyball and more.

Lakehead-Orillia will be a regular contributor to Overtime during the school year. Check back in for updates on our local games to come support the Thunderwolves! If you have questions about our athletic programming at Lakehead-Orillia, please do not hesitate to contact us at [email protected].

2 Sweeps Start SeasonSubmitted by Orillia Senior Softball

Defending champions, Orillia National Nutrition, are off to another good start with back-to- back double header wins over Huntsville.

In late-May, Orillia began their season with wins of 13-6 and 4-2.

The opener saw perfect plate appearances from Dave Boatman, Peter Newman, Scott Fraser and Wayne Martin.

The much closer second game saw Rick Dory, Rick Todd, Kevin Truax and Boatman have perfect games at the plate. Rob Milligan and Martin shared pitching duties in each win

Following a bye week, Orillia traveled to Huntsville in the home-and-home series. Orillia, again, took both games.

National Nutrition bats were hot in game one with 5 runs in the first en route to a 13-6 win. Martin, Fraser, Todd and Larry Duncan led Orillia's offense with flawless hitting.

A see-saw game 2 had National Nutrition outlasting Huntsville 13-12. The bats of Truax, Todd and Harvey Watt triggered the offense. Martin and Milligan together pitched for both wins.

Orillia entered the Simcoe-Muskoka Senior Softball league 5 years ago and remain league champions since entering.

KINGS

BATTLE IN FIRST TOURNEYSubmitted by Orillia Kings Lacrosse

The Orillia Kings Moonstone Mechanical Tyke lacrosse team travelled down to Milton recently for their first tournament

of the year. Playing hard throughout the weekend they earned themselves a spot in the semifinals.

The Kings took on Cambridge Chiefs in their first game. Cambridge held tough and kept the Kings to only 1 goal in the first period scored by EJ Hastings. Orillia answered with strong goaltending of their own as Jace Cosco also held the Chiefs to 1 goal. In the second, the Kings broke the tie with a goal scored by Wyatt Damstedt, assisted by Brody Clarke. Another second period tally by Ronin Black saw the Kings up 3-2 going into the third. Jonah Hall was aggressive on defence causing a lot of turnovers in Orillia’s favour. Not wanting to stop there, the Kings cushioned their lead by adding another 6 goals. Black dominated offensively adding another 4 and Hastings made another great pass to Jaxson Scheffel to finish the game with an 8-2 win.

Game 2 saw the Kings in tough with a strong Centre Wellington Mohawk team. After chances from both teams throughout the first period, the Orillia Kings opened the scoring with 3 minutes left when Ronin Black put one past the goalie, the first of a hat trick he earned throughout the game. Max Balkwill used his speed to save a goal by tracking the opposition the length of the floor and then forcing a Center Wellington player to shoot wide. Transitioning to the offensive end, Balkwill caught a pass from Travis Fraser and found the back of the net. Scheffel notched another in the third with Cosco picking up the assist.

Martin picked up an assist in the game also. The scoring went back and forth and ultimately, the teams ended even, a 5-5 tie.

On the Saturday, the Kings went up against two very strong teams.

Their first game was against the Brampton Excelsior’s. The Kings stuck with Brampton for most of the first period and were tied 2-2 at one point. Connor Doherty carried the ball into the offensive end well for Orillia. Brampton’s depth proved to be too much as they handed Orillia a 7-2 loss. Goal scorers were Hayden McLaughlin from Clarke and Black from McLaughlin.

Orillia’s record earned them a spot in the semi-finals Saturday night vs. the Toronto Beaches. Black led Orillia’s scoring picking up 4 goals and an assist. Xander Spurgeon helped by playing a strong house on defence and Cole Kettley did well at picking up loose balls. Ultimately, the Beaches strength proved to be too much for Orillia in the 10-7 loss. Other goal scorers for Orillia in the semi were Scheffel, Damstedt and McLaughlin.

Overall, a good weekend for the young Orillia Kings Moonstone Mechanical tyke team learning a lot about the game of lacrosse. The experience will help them grow for their upcoming tournaments in the summer.

EFFORTS TESTED - MEDALS WONSubmitted by Black Lotus Academy of Martial Arts and Fitness

Black Lotus Kickboxing had many athletes compete in the 'Summer Smash' competition in Burlington

mid-June, through the Canadian branch of the World Kickboxing Organization.

“A few members competed for the first time, that's exciting”, says owner/Master Instructor, Nic Langman. “They work hard in and out of the gym, it’s nice to see their efforts put to the test.”

Raven Bristow, 13, got in the ring for the first time and came out with the gold. “A huge feat for a first time athlete. She did amazing and she’s eager to get back in the ring”, said her coach.

Other first timers Bryan Borth, Nick Ryerse, Brandon Marshall, and Jacobe Black, showed an amazing demonstration of skill, technique and control to come away with hard earned silver medals. Hunter, also first time, came out with gold in a hard won battle. Derek McMaster, 10, Black Lotus’ most active youth competitor, punched his way to another gold.

Lorie Compton, 45, had her second bout at the competition.

“Lorie impressed us with her movement and skills and ended up with silver in a debatable bout. It could have gone the other way”, said her teammates.

Just over 3 years ago, “Lorie came to us on a mission to better herself.” says co-owner, Jessica McCutcheon. “She did want to lose weight, but really wanted to train and be a warrior.” Jessica said Lorie's lost an impressive 200 lbs since beginning her journey, and 50 lbs since starting at Black Lotus, replacing much of her body with pure muscle.

“Our members support each other, offering a hand if you need help. They're encouraging, accepting and help you push yourself harder than you thought possible. Our students dedication to the sport is beyond measure. The friendships created through battle are unbreakable and we’re proud to be a part of that”, states McCutcheon.

ROYALS ROOKIESSubmitted by Orillia Legion Minor Baseball

The Santa's Village, Orillia Royals Rookie Rep team have started their inaugural season.  For each player, this is their first year of competitive Rep baseball.  Our first player exposé is on Hudson Inglis.

Hudson's excelled on the diamond. He was instrumental helping the Rookie Royals tie their first game against Stouffville. In the bottom of the last inning, Hudson struck the ball hard hitting an infield home run which scored the final, and tying run. In recent tournament action, Hudson took a relay from the outfield and fired an amazing throw into home just in time to get the final out of an inning and saving a run.

Hudson also plays competitive hockey and basketball. He's been playing catch with his father ever since he could throw the ball. His favorite position is shortstop. This is Hudson's second year playing organized baseball (first in Rep) and he is fitting in very well with the team.

8 Seconds Aflying arm-bar, 8 seconds in. It sent his opponent into

'submission'. That was his quickest fight - to date.

In mid-May, 13 year old Hunter Gillmore took 1st place at the 2018 Ontario Open Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu International Tournament - recognized as one of the largest in North America.

This past year, Hunter's fought to 5, 1st place finishes and one 2nd place - most in adult classes.

He's got a 'back story' that simply isn't positive. But, he's risen above it - way above it and now has his sights, and thoughts, moving forward.

The Brechin resident was introduced to martial arts 6 years ago. He started competing 3 years ago and trains at Muskoka Kickboxing in Bracebridge.

For Hunter, it's not about "fighting". It's about building confidence.

"I love the feeling, the rush of fighting. But at the end, I make friends with my opponents. It's taught me respect of others," said Hunter candidly.

He was casually introduced to the sport by former neighbour Sean Pearson, hockey buddy of Hunter's Dad, Ed and professional UFC fighter.

"Originally, it was just for a bit of fun," Ed said, "but it turned into a passion."

Since starting competitions, Hunter's rise has been nothing short of remarkable. It is extremely rare today for him to fight against an opponent his age and size - they're older and bigger. He doesn't get intimidated. He feels an element of anxiety before any fight but utilizes that to focus on what he needs to do.

Gillmore's next huge event will be the 2019 Pan-American Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Tournament in California. If he wins there, it's off to the World's in Abu Dhabi.

"The biggest thing...it keeps me humble", Hunter opined.

Though still a few years away, his mind and eyes are set on turning pro. OT

OPENING WEEKS FOR STALLIONSSubmitted by Huronia Stallions Football Club

The Huronia Stallions Varsity team lost a hard-fought 21-16 opening game to York.

Two plays, a long TD run called back and surrendering a 109-yard interception return for a TD, were too much. Huronia battled back with a Justin Winn to Liam Harrison TD pass. RB Zachary Kuhn scored the other Stallions' TD before exiting with an injury.

Defensive errors led to a long TD pass and another score in the first half. The 'D' did shutout York in the 2nd half. Defensive tackles Zach Willems and T.J. Pusey registered QB sacks. Rookie Gavin Wallin, defensive end, consistently pressured York's QB.

The Junior Varsity team showed their inexperience losing 39-7 to York in their opener. Offensively, the highlight was a TD pass on a trick play. Wide receiver Brayden Harkness caught a lateral, then threw to receiver Mark Arrizza.

Defensively, the Stallions were pushed around all game by the more physical, experienced York squad.

The Bantam's impressed with a 34-26 victory over York. The Stallions defence thwarted a long drive in the final minutes securing the win.

QB Will Howard set the tone with a rushing TD and several completions to WR Mackenzie Jackson. Huronia's o-line led by Nolan Chambers dominated in opening holes for RBs Ethan Travis, 2 TDs, and Carter Barnard, one TD. Aiden McMaster added 4 converts.

On 'D', tackles Jake Sheppard, Gavin Hopper, Elliott Barber with linebackers Aaron Lavers and Ricky Perry shut down York's running game. DB Sean Deasy added several big tackles.

Each year Huronia faces the Peterborough Wolverines in a

triple header matchup to determine the 'Cottage Cup' winner. The program winning two or more takes the Cup. This year’s showdown was in Barrie.

The Bantam's improved to 2-0 with a 38-18 victory over Peterborough. The squad was motivated to set the tone for 'Cottage Cup' day.

Peterborough took an early lead but the Stallions quickly took over. QB Howard completed several long passes to Johnson, connecting for 3 TDs. A great ground attack added 2 TDs from Travis. The defence stymied Peterborough's run game. Tackle Sheppard stripped the ball from a Wolverine and rumbled 30 yards for a TD. Perry and Lavers, strong at linebacker, were supported by the tackling of Cam Taylor and Deasy in the secondary.

Stallions' Junior Varsity fell to 0-2, losing 56-7 to the Wolverines. Stallions' QB Harkness hit receiver Justin Gausby for a first half TD, making the score 14-7. On the ensuing kickoff, Peterborough took it to the house stealing the momentum back.

Huronia's best defensive player was Victor Garcia with 2 excellent open field tackles; one resulting in a fumble.

Varsity improved to 1-1 with a 24-12 victory over Peterborough. 4 interceptions by Jordan Travis - 3 in the 1st quarter - helped put the Stallions up 17-0. Leading 17-12 just before halftime, Chris Kenneweg had an electrifying 56-yard interception return TD, enabled by Zachary Kean's devastating block. Wallin, Willems and Andy Shrubsole all posted QB sacks. Kayden Peters forced a fumble that Owen MacLeod recovered.

Offensively, the unit moved the ball effectively with QB Winn connecting on 2 scoring strikes to receivers Cruz Beaudry and Will McCulloch. Jordan Travis' field goal completed the scoring.

The Bantam and Varsity victories secured the 'Cottage Cup' for the Huronia Stallions.

SHARP FOR SIXSubmitted by Ellwood Epps Sharpshooters Hockey

Next up, the Sharpshooters defeated Niagara 5-2. Goals scorers were Brock Jeffels, Rutledge, Stolte (2), and Hoskins. Assists by Caden Pattenden, Jack Hexemer, Jonah Teahen, Mitchell Webb and Holenski.

The Sharpshooters started the Saturday with a surprising 6-1 victory over undefeated Cambridge, who took many undisciplined penalties. Goals came from Jeffels, Norman (2), Hoskins (2) and Stolte. Assists to Kaiden Robitaille, Whyatt Winkel, Holenski (2),Norman and Hoskins. Mitchell Webb's solid goaltending held the Danglers offense at bay.

The last round-robin game saw the Sharpshooters dominate St. Catharines 7-2, capturing first in the 8-team pool. Owen Palaro, Norman (2), Holenski, Laughlin, Rutledge and Stolte netted the goals. Assisting were Ben Power, Stolte (3), Laughlin (2), Whyatt Winkel, Jhett Winkel, Rutledge and Hoskins.

goals. Overtime solved nothing, time for a shootout. Webb took away the teeth of the Sharks by not allowing a goal. Holenski and Rutledge doubled down to

solidify the victory.

Championship game - a rematch with Cambridge. Stolte and Norman tallied first period goals but the Danglers responded with 2 markers late in the second. The Sharpshooters dug deep in the 3rd helping Webb keep the Danglers scoreless. With 4 minutes left, Laughlin feathered a pass to Hoskins who notched the game winner.

The championship concluded the Sharpshooters season which saw them only lose 1 game in overtime through the whole spring.

LADY KINGS CROWNED:

FIRST EVERSubmitted by Orillia Lady Kings Lacrosse

The weather gods had wet plans as the BMO Nesbitt Burns Senior Lacrosse team participated in the 2018 Provincial Senior

Championships in Brampton.

The lacrosse gods however shined on the Orillia Lady Kings - 2018 Ontario Women’s Field Lacrosse “A” Division Gold Medal Champions.

Orillia played focused, determined defence and received scoring from throughout the lineup en route to the championship.

Made up of various OUA and US scholarship players that mainly come through the Lady Kings organization, the team gelled as the season progressed.

Orillia opened against defending OWFL senior champion, and long time nemesis, Orangeville Northmen. Despite a hard fought effort, Orillia fell 9-6. Camille Vibert with a pair, and singles from Emily Arkell, Kiah Shanks, Abbi England and Huntsville native Kyra Meredith was all the offence mustered against Olivia Hoffman who shone in net for Orangeville.

Game two, the Lady Kings cruised to a 14-6 win over Toronto Beaches. Annie Lloyd notched a hat-trick and 3 assists. Vibert added a hat-trick and an assist while England scored a pair. Emily Van Kessel, Sarah Utting, Teresa Mayo and Kaitlyn Beech scored to aid Mikayla Kunkel earning the win in net.

Next, the match of the tournament, was against Six Nations who owned Orillia during the season. Grit, determination and a, somewhat controversial, goal at game's end gave Orillia an 11-10 victory. Tied at 5 after the first half, the action was back and forth. Though the Six Nations goaltender was stellar, Shanks scored with 1 minute left, tying the game at 10. Orillia won the draw from there and with a stoppage of play with three seconds left, and the ball on the far left side, Lloyd passed across the field to an open Arkell who netted the winner at the

buzzer. Utting (3), Vibert and Lloyd (2 each) and Mayo, Arkell, England, Shanks recorded the goals in the highly competitive match.

On the Sunday, Orillia faced Kitchener-Waterloo. Another Vibert hat-trick led to the 11-6 win, sending Orillia to the championship game. Lloyd and Shanks scored a pair, with singles from Rachel Mochulla, England and Meredith. Kunkel shined in net to earn the win.

Orillia met Orangeville who, along with the Oshawa Lady Blue Knights, had won provincial gold the last 12 years. Orillia had an uphill fight, and psychological battle within themselves. But, stellar goaltending by Emily Van Kessel was the tonic to get past that obstacle, helping Orillia to its first-ever senior 'A' provincial gold.

Team strength and attention to 'defence first' was tested. Led by Shannon O’Connor, Kennady Blunt, Kaitlan Van Kessel and Hayley Rekker, the Lady Kings controlled play and got out to a 4-1 lead by the half. Shanks with a pair, singles from Mayo and Lloyd helped Orillia gain the confidence they needed to keep up with Orangeville. Meredith scored a pair in the 2nd half and Lloyd sealed the 7-2 victory. Emily Van Kessel stole the show making huge saves at key moments and earned player of the game honours, by coach John Pritchard, for the gold medal champions.

Captains and veterans Mayo and Beech accepted the Tewaaraton Cup and celebrated with their team mates.

The players, parents and staff thank team sponsor, and long time lacrosse supporter, John Mayo from BMO Nesbitt Burns.
