I am a descendant of Gkuthaarn and I come from a family of thirteen. I spent my early childhood on Magow-ra Station. This is my mother’s country. She was born on Magowra and worked for most of her life there, as did her ancestors before her. I took my bush name, Maljah, which is my grandmother’s dreaming. It means lightning. Since taking my bush name I found that my grandmother’s bush name meant floodwaters. This is probably why I started painting everything that represents water and what comes from it.

“I have been born into interesting and diverse cultures: my father comes from the oldest city in Austria, Enns (Upper Austria) and my mother is from one of the oldest cultures in the world, Aboriginal people of Australia. While celebrating my Austrian heritage, I also identify through my Mum’s line as a Mamu Ab-original woman, Dugul-barra and Wari-barra family groups, from the Johnstone River catchment of the Wet Tropics of Far North Queensland and the adjoining Great Barrier Reef sea country. Reef and rainforest country are important sources for my inspirations. ”

“Aunty Sally Gabori showed me her paintings when she first visited Bentinck again after being away for such a long time. She gave me one because I am her favourite. Now I am doing the same paintings with my sisters and aunties. Its good painting all day to get away from the house and have a break.”

Daisy Hamlot (nee Bowen) is a senior Thuupi Warra elder. She was born at Cape Bedford in 1937 to Ted and Nancy Bowen. Her totems are the Waandarr (White Cockatoo) from her father’s side and Ngamu Ngaagau (Dingo), mother’s side.
