UNIVERSAL TYPE ORIFICE PLATE

The Universal type Orifice Plate is designed to be used in an Orifice Fitting.Line sizes 2 inch through 10 inch require a removable Orifice Plate Seal.Depending upon the service these Seals are made of Nitrile, Teflon orStainless Steel. Please see page 7. Line sizes 12 inches and above requirethat the seal be vulcanized to the 0.0. of the Plate. The bore geometry ofthe Universal Orifice Plate is the same as the Paddle Type Orifice Plate.Care must be taken in installing Eccentric Bored Plates and Orifice Plateswith Weep Holes to assure they are rotated in the correct position.Segmental Bores are not recommended in Universal Type Orifice Plates.

MANUFACTURING STANDARDS:Superior Products manufactures Orifice Platesin strict accordance with the specificationsof: AGA., ISA., ASME., API., and ISO. asapplicable. Special custom designs are alsoavailable.SIZE: Superior Products manufactures OrificePlates up to 96 inches in diameter.MATERIAL: Superior Products uses specialstretcher leveled plate stock to manufactureOrifice Plates. This material is flattened andstress relieved to stay flat. Orifice Plates arestocked in: T-304, T-304L, T-316, T316L, T-321, T-41 0, Alloy-20, Hastelloy Band C,Monel andTitanium. Many other materials areavailable. All Orifice Plate outside diameter'sare machined to within .005" to assureperfect concentric alignment of the OrificeBore.PLATE FINISH: Superior Products purchasespolished taped plate stock. After Boring, theOrifice Plate, a final finish is applied using aspecially designed polishing machine thatmaintains the Orifice Plate's flatness andOrifice Bore sharpness. The finish does notexceeds 50 microinches.125 RMS FINISH: Special finishes can beapplied to the Orifice Plate face. The areacovered is usually equal to the 0.0. dimen-sions of a standard A.N.S.1. B-16.5 flangeraised face and 1.0. equal to the line 1.0.NOTE: A 125 RMS finish requirement,indicates the use of 1/8 inch thick flexitallicgaskets. Orifice Flange tap holes are stan-dardly located 15/1 6 of an inch from theraised face to give 1 inch spacing from theface of the Plate. It is recommended to useOrifice Flanges with tap holes drilled 7/8 of aninch from the flange face to maintain the 1inch distance and avoid a measurement error.ORIFICE BORING: Superior Products OrificePlates are bored to size using special boringbars to precisely bore the Orifice Plates to anygiven size. The Orifice Plate is held duringboring by special stepped circular jaws thatcontact 90% of the outside diameter of theplate to reduce distortion. Restriction Orificesunder 1/16 of an inch may be drilled to size.

CONCENTRIC BORE: For standard fluidconditions an Orifice Plate would have acentrally located orifice bore.ECCENTRIC BORE: The Orifice would beset off center and tangent to the bottominside line 1.0. to allow heavy solids or slur-ries to flow through the orifice. Also usedwhen the Orifice Bore is less than 1" indiameter and the line requires a vent od drainhole.QUADRANT BORE: The Quadrant BoredOrifice Plate has a quarter round upstreamedge and is designed for high viscosity flowswith Reynolds Numbers below 10,000.

ORIFICE BORE CALCULATIONS: SuperiorProducts uses the latest versions of "FloSoft" to calculate Orifice Bores. SuperiorProducts charges for this service on largeengineering projects, but will provide thisservice at no charge on an individual basis.WEEP HOLES: Weep Holes are located atthe elevational top or bottom of the OrificePlate. The Weep Hole is tangent to a circleequal to 98% of the line 1.0. DRAIN HOLESare located at the bottom of the Orifice Plateto prevent liquids in a gas or condensate in asteam flow from damming up behind theOrifice Plate. VENT HOLES are located at thetop of the Orifice Plate to allow gases in aliquid flow to vent pass the Orifice Plate. See"G" dimension on page two for Weep Holesizes.PLATE IDENTIFICATION: Each plate isstamped with the following standardizedinformation: SUPERIOR, Tag Number, BoreSize, INLET, Line Size, Pressure Rating,Material and USA.PACKAGING: Each plate is shipped individ-ually in a protective package. STANDARD CONCENTRIC ORIFICE: Thisis the standard Flow Element "Fe- typeOrifice Plate. As required PerAGA Report #3 the orifice is beveled on the downstreamedge. The purpose of the bevel is to reducethe width of the throat area to the "e"dimension. The ratio of the Orifice Boredivideby the Line 1.0. is called the Beta Ratio "p".The "P " Ratio should be between .2 and .7.The accuracy of the flow coefficientdiminishes beyondthese limits.

RESTRICTION TYPE ORIFICE: Thepurposeof the Restriction Orifice is to reducethe flowrate or to create a pressure drop. They areplaced downstream of a Turbine Meter toguardagainst over spin. A Restriction Orificeisdenoted by "RO" or "FO". When specifyinga Restriction Orifice, the Plate thickness "E"should be thick enough to reduce Plate de-flection to a minimum. As a rule of thumb themaximum pressure drop across a singleOrifice for a gas is 50%. For greater drops,multiple Orifices may be used. Cavitation andexcessive noise can be a problem.

COUNTER BORED ORIFICE: Instead ofbeveling the downstream face of the OrificePlate at 450, a counter bore is an anothermethod of reducing the throat thickness tothe "e" dimension. The counter bore dia-menter is equal to the bore + "A".

ECCENTRIC ORIFICE BORE: The outsidediameter of the bevel of the Eccentric Orificeistangent to 9S% of the line 1.0.When set atthe elevational top of the line entrained gasesin a liquid will pass the Orifice. When at thebottom position entrained .solids of a liquidwill be allowed to pass the Orifice.

QUADRANT BORED ORIFICE: The Quad-rant Orifice is designed to measurethe flowof high viscosity fluids and is recommendedwhen the Reynolds Number is below 10,000.Cuadrant Orifices maintain '8 constantcoefficient in laminar flow. The Radius wRwsa function of the P Ratio. The thickness ofthe orifice is equal to Cuadrant Radius WR".The thickness of the Orifice Plate is equal towRwrounded up to next 1/S" increment. Forexampleif R= .S99 the Orifice Platewould be1 inch thick. Due to the thickness andround-ed entrance edge the plate is very durable.

SEGMENTAL BORED ORIFICE: TheSegmental Orifice Bore is designedfor fluidscontaining heavy sediments: The diameter" O W is equal to 9S% of the line 1.0. "H" isthe height of the circular segment. The pratio is equal to equivalent circular diameterof segment divide by the line 1.0.. TheSegmental Orifice is the most difficult type ofOrifice to manufacture requiring finishing offby hand.
