Learning Commons

usm.maine.edu/learningcommons Portland: 2nd Floor, Glickman Library, 207-780-4228 Gorham: 1st Floor, Bailey Hall Library, 207-780-5345 The Learning Commons was developed through a partnership between USM Libraries and the Division of Student Success. The Learning Commons is a space for collaborative learning. We have group study rooms, movable furniture, and white boards for student use.

Students can work with Reference Librarians, tutors, faculty and each other in this dynamic environment. The Learning Commons at USM Libraries is here to help students achieve their goals through providing:

• Library and Research help • Computers for individual and group use • Assistance with technology • Collaborative group study and small instruction spaces • Tutoring in person or online, particularly in writing and math • Consultation on learning strategies with a peer academic coach • Online resources, including tutorial videos and helpful links

The Learning Commons provides additional amenities and services for those who choose to make USM Libraries an "academic home" on campus. The Learning Commons is located on the second floor of the Glickman Library in Portland and the first floor of the Gorham campus library in Bailey Hall.

Tutoring Services: Free and Convenient

Through partnerships with academic departments at USM, we are able to offer tutoring in multiple subject areas at the Learning Commons. We are a peer support service, meaning that all of our tutors are current USM students who have completed a nationally-accredited tutor training program.

Tutoring is NOT just for students who are struggling, but also for those who want to excel academically. Many of the students who come for tutoring are USM’s best students, since they know it will help them stay on top!

As a USM student, you are allowed two appointments per week per subject area. For example, you can schedule two writing appointments as well as two math appointments. There are also some drop-in groups, which do not count towards the two appointments in that subject. Appointments are available in Gorham, Portland, LAC, and online.

Please feel free to drop by The Learning Commons in Portland or Gorham, or the Writing Center at Lewiston-Auburn College. If there is a tutor available, he or she will be happy to work with you. It is always best, though, to plan ahead and schedule an appointment in advance. This is especially true toward the end of the semester. To schedule an appointment, visit: usm.maine.edu/learningcommons/schedule-tutoring-appointment.

What Tutoring IS:

• Engaging in academic “time on task” • Developing effective learning strategies • Discussing topics actively • Building confidence as a learner

What Tutoring IS NOT:

• Completing homework assignments • Submitting a paper for editing • Attending without participating • Replacing class time

Peer Academic Coaching

In addition to topic-based tutoring, students can increase their academic skills at the Learning Commons. These include how to effectively and efficiently:

• Read textbooks • Take notes in the classroom • Manage time • Prepare for and take exams

For one-on-one consultations, students can meet with a Peer Academic Coach in Portland and Gorham. These are USM students who have learned a variety of academic approaches, and can help a student select from a "menu" of options and practice the new strategies. To schedule a meeting with a Peer Academic Coach, please visit Schedule A Tutoring Appointment or call (207)780-4228.
