Roots of Osaka University

Edo- Era (1838):

Teki-Juku

Osaka University was established in 1931 as the sixth imperial university. But its scientific roots can be trace back to the open-minded and progressive tradition of the Osaka merchant culture of the Edo-era (1724:Kaitoku-do).

Kohan Ogata ~Teki-juku~Ogata Kohan established Teki-juku, who was a medical doctor and scholar of Rangaku about 170 years ago.

The school produced an array of talented individuals who pioneered Japan's modern era.Fukuzawa Yukichi:

the founder of Keio University, Omura Masujiro: building the basis of

Japan's modern militaryTakamatsu Ryoun: contributed to the dissemination of modern medicine in Japan.

Koan himself was an able medical doctorand excellent educator. His basic ideas towards human beings have been inherited by Osaka University as its mental backbone.

Ogata Kohan

Teki-juku

Yukichi FukuzawaGraduate from Teki-juku

He published "An Encouragement of Learning“, which printed > 3 million books.

The book drew a chart to avoid colonization.

“It is said the human beings are equal. But it is not true.”We were categorized not by color of skin, but Knowledge, Technology and Science.

He was an avid supporter of education.
