WELCOME

Dean of the Faculty

Welcome to the Faculty of Science at Charles Sturt University. By gaining admission to your course you have already demonstrated a high level of achievement in your previous studies and I am delighted to welcome you as you move into the next exciting phase of your studies. CSU is committed to providing you with the highest standard of education and professional standing upon graduation, so I encourage you to take advantage of the many support strategies available to assist you in your studies. Your Course Director and academic staff are happy to assist you with course-specific or subject-specific questions, respectively. Their contact details and consultation times are noted in your Subject Outline. For non-course related inquiries, you first point of contact should be Student Central

(http://www.csu.edu.au/oncampus/student-support/student-central). Information on how to access student counselling, health, disability and library services and how to find learning skills advisors or support for English language skills is available via the Student Support web page at http://www.csu.edu.au/distance-education/student-support. Feedback from our students is very important to us at CSU. I therefore encourage you to take advantage of the opportunity to complete the on-line subject evaluations and course evaluations available to you. You will be notified via email or your subject Interact site when these become available and you will be provided easy links for access. You should be confident in the knowledge that the time you spend on these tasks will produce tangible outcomes that will further enhance our ability to create effective learning environments and thus enhance the standing of CSU and your degree. This is a truly exciting time to be joining CSU. We have many new courses starting and new state-of-the-art teaching and research facilities on every campus. Our new on-line platform means you can work more interactively with your teachers and classmates, whether they are in the same town as you or half way across the world. Remember it’s never too early to be thinking about the next step – Honours and PhD study opportunities are not so far away. Have you thought about taking the opportunity to become involved in CSU’s international activities? Nearly 20% of graduates from the Faculty of Science undertook international studies last year. Our students visited over 20 countries around the world, either through a session as an exchange student, international volunteering, accompanying a group of peers and academics on one of our many International Short Term Programs or by undertaking some of their professional practice internationally. Although you have just started your course, whether your intention is to study on campus or by distance education, now is a great time to be thinking about how you can combine your studies with international travel. Further information on these opportunities can be found through CSU Global (http://www.csu.edu.au/oncampus/overseas-study-opportunities) and the School will make sure you know of any upcoming Short Term Programs. Finally, I encourage you to remember that attending university, whether on-campus or studying by distance, should be challenging but should also be lots of fun. I am delighted to take this opportunity to wish you every success in your course and look forward to meeting you at one of our award ceremonies (for high achieving students) and, of course, I’ll see you at your graduation. With best wishes Professor Tim Wess Dean, Faculty of Science

Head of School

On behalf of the whole School and its staff, I welcome you to Charles Sturt University for 2015. Students enrolling for the first time are especially welcome. Commencing in 2015 we are offering a degree in Veterinary Technology, the first course of its type in Australia. For those students, some of your course is in conjunction with the CSU campus in Wangaratta. We will also be joined by students enrolling in the Masters of Animal Science degree.

The total cohort of new students numbers around 270; made up of about 70 Animal Science students, 30 in Equine Science, 65 in Veterinary Science and 25 in Veterinary Technology. Some 80 more are distance students in Equine Science and Veterinary Technology. I estimate that we are now the largest single group of people on a CSU campus. Congratulations on achieving entry in such a highly competitive environment. I know there is anxiety in terms of fees, but I believe it is right you have confidence to study with us at CSU.

The School of Animal and Veterinary Sciences is relatively new. While the Equine Science course has a long history at CSU both Animal Science and Veterinary Science graduated students for the first time in 2010. Building this School has been an exciting development. Not only are the courses new, many of the staff joined the School recently as we continue to build, many of them come from other Universities both nationally and internationally. In total, staff number nearly 100. It all means that the School has a fresh and innovative approach and can benefit from this broad experience. Many of our facilities are new as well, and are of world class. The subjects you study have been carefully planned and designed to provide excellent learning opportunities. Nevertheless, we strive to continue to improve our courses and subjects. In that process we use your constructive input as well as input from the various industries to improve the quality and relevance of what we teach.

During your course you will gain significant knowledge and skills as well as preparation for a diverse range of careers. Make sure you get to know the Course Directors, teaching staff, technical staff and administrative staff who run the programs. Learning is a collaborative process and you need to play an active part. While we can guide and teach you, only you can learn.

If you are returning to studies after a holiday or extramural work I hope it was a good experience. We continue to receive positive feedback about you from people outside the university and who tell us what good citizens you are. We also receive feedback on how well we prepare students for the workplace. Thank you for representing the School and University so well. Best wishes for your studies this year.

University campuses are great places to make friends and to become involved in groups. The Student Associations, together and separately, organize a wide range of social and educational functions. Please join them and help them help you. The University also has a broad range of support services. I encourage you to use them when you need help.

Professor Nick Sangster Head of School

Course Director

Congratulations on being part of the first cohort of students studying the Bachelor of Veterinary Technology. We are very proud of this new degree, which has been designed in response to rising educational standards for veterinary technologists internationally. A degree qualification is now required for veterinary technologists in Canada, the UK and the USA. Increasing demand for high quality companion animal care, pressure on production animal systems and significant advances in reproductive technology mean a degree-level qualification is also becoming more important for veterinary paraprofessionals in Australia. CSU’s Bachelor of Veterinary Technology has been developed to meet this need.

The structure of the Bachelor of Veterinary Technology course includes a dual qualification, with students enrolling in the integrated program eligible to qualify for a Certificate IV in Veterinary Nursing (from Goulbourn Ovens TAFE) as well as the Degree from CSU. We recognise the importance of the Certificate IV qualification by awarding four subjects credit to those students who already hold this qualification.

Our aim is to develop highly employable, safe, competent and adaptable veterinary technologists who will be reflective and ethical. The program is designed to prepare graduates who possess highly developed practical skills as well as highly developed interpersonal, problem-solving and decision-making skills, a commitment to lifelong learning and professional development as well as a positive and caring attitude towards clients, their animals and members of the community, and the ability to work as an effective member of an animal health care team.

TIMETABLE FOR ON CAMPUS STUDENTS

The on campus students’ timetable is published each session, and is available through the timetable website http://timetable.csu.edu.au. It is advisable to familiarise yourself with the locations of buildings and rooms prior to attending classes. Whilst every effort is made to ensure students do not experience clashes of times for lectures, workshops and tutorials, no guarantees can be given for students who are out of sequence (not undertaking the normal course pattern), nor with elective subjects. If you experience a clash of lecture times, you should contact your Course Director who may be able to suggest an alternative subject for you to take. You will be given a campus specific timetable for your course based on the normal enrolment pattern for first year students. Information on how to use the new timetabling facility is available at the site below. http://student.csu.edu.au/study/study-essentials/timetable

THE COURSE

Introduction Congratulations on being selected for Veterinary Technology at CSU. Before you embark on your 3 years at University, you should find out more about the course, particularly why it is organised the way it is and where it might lead you.

Mission Our aim is to provide you with opportunities to pursue excellence in Veterinary Technology. You will graduate as a competent veterinary technologist, valuing scientific rigor, displaying initiative in approaches to problem solving and demonstrating flexibility and adaptability in employment. With our help, your aim will be to achieve this.

History Veterinary Technology is a new degree at CSU with the first intake into the course this year. This course has been designed in response to rising educational standards for veterinary technologists internationally.

Together with the Animal Science, Equine Science and Veterinary Science courses, Veterinary Technology is taught in the School of Animal and Veterinary Sciences. You will enjoy learning in some of the best facilities of their kind in the world, located on both the Wagga Wagga and Wangaratta campuses, with laboratories, museums, practical classrooms, animal handling facilities and digital learning resources. Although our staff teach across all four degree programs, some have been appointed to focus on the Veterinary Technology curriculum. The same staff who teach and conduct research in the Animal Science, Equine Science and Veterinary Science degree programs will also be delivering subjects in the Veterinary Technology degree.

The course The Bachelor of Veterinary Technology is a three year undergraduate degree. The course structure involves both articulation and integration of courses offered by CSU and Goulburn Ovens Institute of TAFE (GOTAFE). Industry feedback was that graduates from the Bachelor of Veterinary Technology should have as a base line all of the skills and competencies of a veterinary nurse.

The course structure includes a dual qualification, with students enrolling in the integrated program eligible to qualify for a Certificate IV in Veterinary Nursing (from GOTAFE) as well as the Degree from CSU. The Veterinary Nursing qualification (Certificate IV in Veterinary Nursing) is delivered via four CSU subjects; ASC180, ASC181, ASC182 and ASC183. To enable awarding of the Certificate IV in Veterinary Nursing, students will be concurrently enrolled with GOTAFE.

The course provides training in the major disciplines which underpin veterinary technology and prepares students for careers as veterinary paraprofessionals working with animals, or within animal-related industries. Study in this degree commences with a broad foundation in biological sciences and veterinary nursing, and in the third year, offers three alternative streams of study in large animal technology, clinical technology and practice management.

The course provides instruction in the basic sciences, veterinary nursing and the health, welfare, behaviour, nutrition, genetics and breeding of animals. In order to link the theory and practice the teaching is by lecture and practical classes together with workplace learning. For several subjects you will share the classroom

with students in other courses. All of the subjects within the Bachelor of Veterinary Technology are available by distance education. The training is focused on building skills for employment in a range of industries.

The aim of the Bachelor of Veterinary Technology course is to develop highly employable, safe, competent and adaptable veterinary technologists who will be reflective and ethical.

On completion of the Bachelor of Veterinary Technology, graduates should:

• be well-educated in the knowledge and skills of veterinary technology; • have a comprehensive understanding of the importance of the veterinary technologist’s role in the

continuum of patient care; • appreciate the importance of the principles involved in generating and supporting clinical decision

Academic Regulations The basic philosophy of Charles Sturt University is that students are mature individuals capable of assuming some responsibility for management of their study programs. It is, therefore, each student’s responsibility to be acquainted with and comply with relevant academic regulations. Basically, the University does not monitor such compliance other than to advise students when they have not followed the appropriate regulations. If you are having difficulties through illness or personal problems you are strongly urged to read these regulations and policies in their entirety, especially Academic Progress and Assessment Regulations. Some of the more important regulations are:

Special Consideration Grade Pending Leave of Absence Withdrawal from Subjects Supplementary Exams (SX) Enrolment Variation Examination Regulations Review of a Final Grade Exclusion Student Academic Misconduct Regulations.

If you are still unsure of the procedures to follow use the Student Central AskCSU http://student.csu.edu.au/support/student-central/askcsu to search for articles on these regulations or contact Student Central directly. http://student.csu.edu.au/support/student-central The Academic Regulations and CSU Policy Library are available online: www.csu.edu.au/acad_sec/regulations.htm http://www.csu.edu.au/about/policy

Academic Advice website Information is available on the Academic Advice website which explains the regulations and the application processes for most of the above regulations. Assistance is available to students from the Office for Students, Student Liaison Officers on each campus and students are encouraged to consult with theirsubject coordinators first to discuss their options before applying for any of the above. http://student.csu.edu.au/study/academic-advice

Avoiding Plagiarism Charles Sturt University expects that the work of its students and staff will uphold the values of academic honesty and integrity. This Guide to Avoiding Plagiarism can be found at the website below, and is an important resource that will help you understand these values and apply them in practice. All scholarly and professional work involves researching, understanding and building on the work of others. Honesty and integrity demand that we recognise and acknowledge that work. In this guide you will find advice and support to enable you to do this properly and well. Plagiarism is contrary to the values of academic integrity and honesty. The practice of plagiarism within the University could undermine the University's reputation and also that of students and staff who have acted with integrity and honesty. It is important that we all take our share of responsibility for maintaining the best standards and values in the work of our University. http://student.csu.edu.au/study/plagiarism

WORKPLACE LEARNING

Work placements are a key part of learning and assessment for the Bachelor of Veterinary Technology. In the first year of the course students are required to complete a total of 35 days of workplace learning in a suitable veterinary practice of their choice. This workplace learning is a component of ASC180, ASC181, ASC182 and ASC183. Additional work placements will be required later in the course (for ASC280, ASC391, ASC392 and ASC393) and the total number of days required to be completed will depend on which stream the student chooses to follow in the last year of the course.

Students can elect to do their placement in blocks of 10 days (i.e. 2 weeks) or 1-2 days per week over a series of weeks. The more days consecutively you can do the better in terms of being able to see cases as they progress.

Students are asked to treat their work placement as potential employment opportunities; it is recommended that once students have made initial enquiries with a practice as to whether they will take them for placement that an interview is conducted. This interview can be treated as a normal job interview and helps to ensure that both parties are clear on the expectations during the placement and it is good practice for future job interviews. Please note that the interview may be done via telephone.

The supervisor in the veterinary clinic will be required to sign off on the practical skills that you have completed on the job. In the first year this will also count towards the Veterinary Nursing Units of Competency.

Equipment and clothing

During all work placements

• CSU name badges - compulsory to wear in clinics, all practical sessions and when we have visiting lecturers.

Small Animal

• VTSA (Veterinary Technology Students Association) shirt for clinic wear - no jeans and no sandshoes! Clean deck shoes or boots are best - save work boots for outside calls. • Veterinary Technology Scrub Top

Large Animal

Overalls - Must be worn for all animal handling practicals and outside visits at clinics Work boots - must be worn for all animal handling practicals and outside calls at clinics Gum boots Hat and sunscreen, when necessary, for practicals and clinics Warm and/or waterproof clothing, when necessary, for practicals and clinics

A laboratory coat MUST be worn in University clinics and laboratories. Please do not wear your laboratory coat in private practices or outside of the university clinics and laboratories.

You will be provided with an opportunity to purchase clothing for clinic visits that includes shirts and vests with the CSU logo, as well as overalls.

Travel to the participating practices will be your responsibility. You must cover the cost of fuel to and from the practices. Please do not ask for fuel subsidies as requests will not be granted.

Mechanics

A deal of planning will be required by you to complete work placements. Planning involves arranging the actual placement with the assistance of the Workplace Learning Placements Officer, Margaret Jenkins. You have to organise your own travel to and from the enterprise/organisation and you must ensure that you are adequately equipped for the visit.

The first step is to ask the manager of the enterprise if they are willing to take you for the dates you require. You then complete an Vet Tech - Placement Request Form (VETECHS0001), which you must submit to the Workplace Learning Placements Officer at least 4 weeks prior to the expected commencement of the placement. If you do not do this, the insurance cover arranged by the university will be invalid and your placement will not be counted. No retrospective approvals will be given for any workplace learning.

Before the placement

Once the enterprise is selected, the Workplace Learning Placements Officer will:

Send the owner/manager a letter from the School explaining the objectives of the placement and whom to contact if there are any problems

Send the owner/manager an Vet Tech – Student Placement Evaluation Form

During each placement students will be expected to be able to participate in specific activities (as will be indicated in the relevant Subject Outlines). If a clinic is not comfortable with your participating in these activities it is recommended that you look for another practice as you will not achieve the learning outcomes from your placement. Students who are unable to be signed off on all tasks at the end of their placement may be required to undertake further work placement in order to demonstrate competency. Students can contact the Subject Coordinator for suggestions of suitable veterinary practices.

Insurance

Insurance for students undertaking placements as part of the course for which they are enrolled is outlined in the Insurance letter, a copy of which is sent to placement providers with the student introduction letter and evaluation forms. This outlines the provisions with respect to the following insurance under which students are covered while on work placements:

1. Public liability 2. Professional indemnity 3. Personal accident insurance.

Full details of the University’s insurance arrangements, including certificates of currency and some frequently asked questions can be found on the Division of Finance insurance webpage.

Students are required to report any accidents or misadventures that occur on placement within 24 hours of the incident. Students are asked to notify the School, as well as submit an Accident-incident-report. If students have been injured, they should also contact the Student Support Officer for the Wagga Wagga campus.

Students should note that insurance cover will only apply if the student is undertaking a placement as a component of their course requirements, and the correct placement administrative procedure has been followed. This means that students must have submitted the correct placement forms to the Administrative Office. Changes to any placement details must be notified to the Placements Officer in writing or by email.

Students should note that if they are undertaking an unapproved placement, or the correct paperwork has not been submitted this insurance will not apply.

Q Fever Immunisation Program The disease

Q fever is an occupational hazard to veterinary technologists and others involved with livestock. It is caused by Coxiella burnetii, a rickettsial organism, which infects a variety of domestic and wild animals (especially cattle, sheep, goats, macropods and bandicoots). Infected animals are often symptomless but are important sources of infection for people, as high numbers of the organism are shed in urine, faeces, milk and in the products of parturition. Direct contact by inhalation is the commonest route of infection in man. In people the disease can be severe and debilitating but is rarely fatal. Clinically it is similar to influenza (muscle pains, severe headache and high fever) and is usually rapidly self-limiting but it can also be recurrent (Q fever fatigue syndrome) or result in pneumonia, liver or heart problems.

Q-fever vaccination is compulsory to enable you to participate in the practical components of the veterinary technology course. If you have previously been vaccinated or have immunity, documentation to that effect is required to be sighted and recorded by the Schools administration staff.

The program:

The Q Fever Immunisation Program will be held in two clinics with two visits one week apart.

Group 1 Clinics Group 2 Clinics Group 3 Clinics

If required

1st visit for skin test, attend Dr plus pathology

Tuesday 3rd March 2015

Tuesday 17th March 2015

Tuesday 31st March 2015

2nd visit for reading and vaccination where necessary

Tuesday 10th March 2015

Tuesday 24th March 2015

Tuesday 7th April 2015

You must be committed to attending two appointments in either Group 1 or 2. This is necessary as

results are read and vaccination is required 7 days after screening. If you do not attend the second appointment, you will need to start the program again and this may be at a considerable cost to you. If you missed making an appointment please register your details and make an appointment by contacting Blamey Street Surgery – Ph 02 6925 2242.

The location this year will be in the Tutorial Rooms at the rear of Green Room 159 located in the Graham Building 229.

Bookings are organised on the School’s Orientation Day. If you are under 18, you must bring the Consent Form for Under 18 with you, completed by your parents.

A portion of the cost for the Q Fever program will be bulk billed, but there is a charge of either $25 if vaccination is not required or $125 if you do require vaccination.

If you have already been vaccinated or have already been determined to be immune then proof of this status must be supplied to the Administration Office in the school and there will be no charge.

Important reminders:

You must eat something and drink plenty of fluids prior to both appointments Your fluid intake should be increased for at least 24 hours prior to these appointments so that you do not

dehydrate and become faint No alcohol the night before your appointments

Bring the following completed documentation to your first appointment:

Q Fever Pre-screening and Vaccination Form Q Fever Personal Details and Consent Form Q Fever Employee Questionnaire Consent Form for Under 18 (if applicable) Information and Consent forms x 2

You must bring your Medicare card on both days. If you don’t have your card, you will not be able to proceed with the pre-screening and this could hinder your practical experiences and therefore cause a delay in your study. Your Medicare number alone is not sufficient. If you are registered on your parents Medicare card you must bring your own or have a card issued by Medicare.

USEFUL SUPPORTING INFORMATION

Student – Staff Liaison Committee To foster good communication between students and the School of Animal and Veterinary Sciences a Student-Staff Liaison Committee has been established.

The Committee is concerned with the nature and presentation of the course, impediments to teaching and learning, physical resources for delivery of curriculum and student amenities, interaction between students and staff and the wellbeing of students.

Chris Petzel chairs the Committee, which is composed of the Course Directors, students from each of the courses and a representative of the Technical Staff.

Student representatives for Veterinary Technology are the Year Representatives, who are elected annually by the Veterinary Technology Students Association. You will be electing your Year Representative early in this session.

The Committee meets four times a year, approximately 3 to 4 weeks after each vacation. At each meeting, the Student Representatives raise suggestions, comments and concerns voiced by their fellow students; in turn these are considered by the Course Directors, who report back to the subsequent meeting. The Course Directors relay any developments in their respective courses so that it can be disseminated to all students by the Student Representatives.

Please actively participate in this process. Think carefully about any issue you may care to raise with your Student Representative and, perhaps, discuss it with your fellow students. The Committee welcomes your comments, suggestions and news, whether it is good or bad, positive or negative.

Veterinary Technology Student Association The Veterinary Technology Students Association (VTSA) is a club that provides support to veterinary technology students at CSU, regardless of whether you are enrolled internally or by distance education. The club organises social functions, fundraising activities and fosters camaraderie within the course. Importantly the VTSA nominates three representatives to the Student Staff liaison committee that discusses course developments, improvements and requirements to meet the ever changing dynamics of the animal industries. We encourage all veterinary technology students to join and be actively involved in the VTSA.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between a course and a subject?

A course is the full three or four year program you are undertaking, for example Bachelor of Medical Science. Your course is made up of subjects that must be completed to gain your degree. Each subject has a code and name, e.g. BMS129 Physiological Sciences 1. The first number (i.e. BMS 129) indicates the level of the subject.

How do I work out my timetable (Internal students only)

If you are an internal student you will be advised during O Week of the timetable for students in each course. However, timetables are available online via student.csu http://student.csu.edu.au/study/study-essentials/timetable and a copy is situated on the notice boards in the foyer of the School Building. You should know what subjects you are to undertake in the first session. Find each of those subjects and write down the lecture days and times. Practical sessions will also be timetabled for some of these subjects. You are generally only required to undertake one practical session per subject, even though in some instances a subject may have more than one practical session timetabled to cater for the number of students enrolled in the particular subject. You may be directed as to which practical session you are to attend. Some subjects also have multiple tutorial sessions associated with them. You do not have to attend all of these sessions and you will be directed by your lecturer as to which tutorial session you are to attend. In most cases you will have a lecture prior to any tutorial or practical sessions, to enable your Subject Coordinator to explain and identify the particular sessions you are to attend. If you need to change practical classes you must contact the Subject Coordinator beforehand.

How to add and delete subjects?

On the Student Admin Online page click on the online tutorial videos which explains how to use the online system. The deadline for adding subjects to your enrolment is the Friday of the first week of session. http://student.csu.edu.au/administration/enrolment/student-admin-online

Subjects can be deleted from your enrolment up until HECS census date without penalty. This can be done through Student Admin Online http://student.csu.edu.au/administration/enrolment/student-admin-online

What are practical sessions?

Practical sessions enable you to experience the “hands-on” side of what you are learning. These practical sessions will normally be held within the Laboratories or in the Computing Facilities for more computer based practicals. Not all subjects involve practical sessions so do not be alarmed if practical sessions are not listed in the timetable.

What if I fall behind in assessment items?

First of all do not panic, but don't ignore it either. See your Subject Coordinator who will be only too willing to give good advice.

What if I am having difficulties coping?

Again – do not panic. As University study is so different to studying at school, this is a common problem in the first year of studies. It often helps to talk about it with your friends and you will be quite surprised to find that you are not the only one who feels they are having problems. There are many avenues for you to follow. Seek out your lecturer or Subject Coordinator. Student Services offers help in the form of counselling, time management and study skills sessions. You should also feel free to make an appointment to see the Head of School at any time.

Do I have to have assignments typed?

With the exception of exams, all other assessment items should be typed. Check your subject outline for information on the presentation style and format required for your assessments.

Charles Sturt University | Veterinary Technology Induction Booklet 2015_V2 47

What if I don't have the textbook?

Copies of the textbook should be available and can be purchased from the Co-op Bookshop. If sold out and in the process of being reordered, please bring this to the attention of the Subject Coordinator. The Library also has copies of prescribed textbooks.

Where can I find or contact my lecturer?

As detailed earlier in this booklet, staff contact details are provided above (include page number). All academic staff have consultation times and this information is presented in the Subject Outline. Many staff request that you make an appointment and you will therefore need to speak to your lecturer possibly after a lecture or practical session to discuss a suitable time or contact them via e-mail.

What if I fail a subject?

If you fail a subject, see your Course Director as you may not be able to continue with some subjects in the next session if you have failed any prerequisites subjects.

Can I buy second-hand textbooks?

Yes, the Classified forum is where students buy and sell second-hand textbooks and other items. http://forums.csu.edu.au/perl/forums.pl?forum_id=Classifieds__forum&task=frameset You may be able to buy them directly from other students - use your course contacts. Check noticeboards throughout the campus and your course forums. There is also a website called https://studentvip.com.au/textbooks where students from across Australia can buy and sell second-hand textbooks. Please exercise caution when buying something online.
