Mission minded students went to Dallas this year and worked with Link, participating in a poverty and homelessness ministry. They had a family night where they met all of the families staying at the ministry homes, and then had an immersion experience where they were left with little or sometimes no money and told to take care of themselves. This shocked many in the group and gave a very clear message that poverty is nothing to take lightly. They proceeded to work at homeless shelters, transition houses and clothes closets, and gave a campus presentation when they returned.

Concordia’s chapter of Pi Kappa Delta, a national communication honor society, spent their time this year organizing PastSecret, a project based on PostSecret, a community art project in which people from all over the country write secrets on postcards and mail them in to be displayed online. For PastSecret, pkd members distributed pieces of paper for students to write, submit and then post the secrets in tlec for everyone to see. At the end of the event, pkd held a forum in which they discussed secret keeping, trust, privacy and other issues in communication.

Concordia Youth Ministry, more commonly referred to as CYM, is a group of about thirty energetic, outgoing, faith-filled CUNE students. The group meets once a week for devotion, event planning, and fellowship. On weekends, CYM sends out groups of four to five CUNE students to local churches to lead lock-ins, including games and devotions. They have open discussions with junior and senior high students about their beliefs, and witnesses, their morals, and their joy in the Lord. CYM also hosts various youth game nights at the Seward Youth Center for teenagers in the community.

Freshman Makenzie Deutschman commented, “I love going to CYM meetings and events because everyone is on fire for the Lord and youth ministry. It’s a crazy good time!”

We weren’t able to host a Career Fair this year for various reasons, but we look forward to bringing it back for the 2010-2011 school year. We were able to add a couple of new projects this year, the Entrepreneurial Development Summit as well as the Financial Literacy Course tutoring. We are looking forward to making even more positive changes in the coming year!

This year, SIFE competed at Regional Competitions in Chicago, Illinois and brought home the 2nd Runner-up trophy from our league. It was great opportunity to see what other SIFE teams have been doing this year, as well as show off the projects that we have been involved in.

As we move forward into the next semester, SIFE will continue to grow and build the skills needed to be successful in our members. We look forward to serving the Concordia and Seward communities in the next year!” –Alison Sandall
