Learning Objective: Today we will use organizational features of printed text to locate relevant information.

•organizational= ways to sort out something•Relevant=something that is related

What are we going to use today?

Today we will use organizational features of printed text to locate

relevant information.

Everyone know where we can find the Table of Contents. Tell you partner where we can

find the Table of Contents.

There are other features of printed text that we must also learn

about!

•Citations•End notes•Bibliographic references

CitationWhen you write a research report and

you want to quote something that someone else wrote, you have to give them credit. You give them credit for

what they wrote by including a citations. You also have to give the other authors credit even if you decide to paraphrase

what they wrote.

End NotesEnd notes are the way that you

keep track of the authors you are citing. They are placed at the

bottom of the page that you cited. When you write research papers, you will be required to write the end notes at the bottom of your

paper. You usually use a number written at the end of the sentence.

BibliographyAt the end of your report, you must

also list the names of all the resources that you used for you

research report. They are written in alphabetical order.

Table of ContentsThe table of contents lists chapter titles and their page numbers in order. Chapter titles tell you the

topic of each chapter.

IndexIndex is found in the back of the

book. It alphabetically lists names, places, and topics that are found in the book. Next to each entry are

the page numbers where the topic is mentioned or discussed.

AppendixAn appendix appears at the end of

the book. It contains extra information such as maps, tables, and lists that relate to the topic.

Sometimes there is more than one appendix.

So how will the questions look like on the CST test?

So how will the questions look like on the CST test?

Rainbows are pretty. When it rains late in the afternoon and the sun is setting, rays of light from the sun sometimes pass through raindrops in the sky. When they pass through the raindrops at a low angle, this causes the light to bend.¹ So, when you see the colors of the rainbow, you are actually witnessing light bending through a raindrop. Since light also bends as it passes through clear glass or a prism, it can cause a rainbow to form. Donald Ahrens was quoted in an online article, “About Rainbows” as saying that rainbows are “one of the most spectacular light shows observed on earth.”² You can have your own light show if you’d like. All you need is clear glass or plastic and a ray of sunshine, and you, too, can make your own rainbow. So, make a rainbow.
