PRESIDENT’S REPORT

2013 has been a significant year for Hockey NSW as it strives to be a leader both on and off the field. As an organisation,

the staff, key stakeholders and Board have undertaken an extensive amount of planning and preparation on implementing

key strategic priorities that are designed to ensure our sport is set up for a long and sustainable period of growth across

our vast state.

Recently announced initiatives such as Association Reform and Regional Coaching Coordinator networks are specific

outcomes of a carefully planned strategic vision and are targeted at addressing two of our biggest challenges in the sport,

a lack of sustainable growth and volunteer burnout.

Our sport has not had any significant change in total participation over the last 5 years. This is an urgent and immediate

priority for all us. Without increased player numbers, we cannot deliver improved services into the future. This year has

seen a significant expansion in game development as we specifically target expanding our reach on participation and

development. Further to this, the rollout next year of full time Regional Coaching Coordinators across key areas of the state

will further enhance our reach. To deliver services such as these, we need efficient operating structures across the state

that will ease the burden on a dwindling volunteer base. This is one of the key pillars of Association reform and is why the

Board has taken a leadership role in this area.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank the sponsors and commercial partners of Hockey NSW. Without their support

we would not be able to grow our great game and I know we share common objectives and a great spirit for the game.

To the Board, thank you for your vision and leadership over the last year. I cannot thank you enough for making my first

year a memorable one and I am looking forward to another exciting year ahead of us. I also want to thank Tony Mestrov

and his highly capable team for their professionalism over the year in what has been an extremely busy time.

In closing, the next year is one of transformation and pivotal for the future of our sport in NSW. We must close out the

implementation of key reforms as soon as possible so that we address the issue of growing our game.

CHIEF ExECuTIvE OFFICER’S REPORT Hockey NSW has had a year of significant progress with a number of new strategic initiatives that will see the business structured

for growth with financial stability over the years to come.

The most pleasing aspect of 2013 has been the high level of staff retention over the past 12 months and we are satisfied this has

allowed our members to receive higher levels of service. To our dedicated staff, on behalf of the Board of Hockey NSW and myself

I would like to thank you for your tireless work and passion throughout the year. There have also been a number of key positions that

have been formed within the organisation namely the Operations Manager, Media and Database Coordinator and Coaching Director

and these roles have had a major impact in the improvement of service delivery to our members.

Throughout the year, we’ve seen the introduction of a number of key strategic initiatives. Association Reform will be introduced in

February 2015; this Reform will allow Hockey NSW to provide greater support and assistance to Associations in a variety of sectors

including finance, policies and procedures, business strategies and development initiatives.

There will be the introduction of Regional Coaching Coordinators throughout NSW which will enable Associations to deliver game

development & retention initiatives, schools programs and initiate growth in registration numbers as well as more Skill Development

Camps in 2014 due to the overwhelming success of the Camps and Clinics in 2013.

It’s positive to see significant funding towards the future of our game with $3.6 million of the $5.5 million NSW Government Facilities

Funding Grant expended this year. Tamworth Hockey Association, Parkes Hockey Association, Macarthur Hockey Association,

Moorebank Liverpool District Hockey Club and Northern District Hockey Association all received funding in 2013 with projects

in Sutherland Shire and Blacktown to receive funding on completion in 2014.

In addition to all of this, we’ve also seen a national online registration platform introduced. Although there have been some initial issues,

Hockey Australia, in collaboration with the States/Territories are working to create better solutions to create a better ease of use.

I would like to thank our loyal sponsors who have been with Hockey NSW for a number of years, namely Sportscover, Sports

Technology International and FHE/Hemingway Sports. We have also seen the step change in our business to a more commercial

focus with a number of new sponsors to complement our current portfolio. Our new sponsors include Catalyst Money, Bridges Finance,

Fi-Ta Performance Sportswear, NobleOak and Schweppes. A sincere thank you to our partners; Hockey Australia, NSWIS, NSW Office

of Communities and Sydney Olympic Park Authority, for their continued support.

Congratulations to all players that were selected to represent NSW in either Field and or Indoor this year. A special mentioned to our

newly crowned National Champions, congratulations and well done! We all look forward to your continued success next year.

Of course, not all of these teams and events would be possible without the fantastic support of our dedicated volunteers out there

in the hockey community. Hockey NSW could not function without all of your passion and valuable contributions towards the sport.

To Associations, we are very appreciative of your assistance and hard work throughout the year. The next 16 months will be a time of

change but I ask you for your patience and cooperation as we move towards achieving our bigger picture objectives for the greater

good of hockey in NSW.

To the Board of Hockey NSW, I personally want to thank you for your immense support and would like to congratulate all of you for

GAME DEvELOPMENT REPORT Stick2HockeyHockey NSW has acquired the endorsement of Australian players Casey Eastham and Simon Orchard to be the face of

Stick2Hockey small sided games concept. We have introduced the format state-wide and the roll out will occur early in 2014

through the Regional Coaching Coordinator network.

Development ClinicsIn 2013 Hockey NSW implemented development clinics for players in the under 13, 14, 15 and 18 age groups and, for the first

time, under 12s.

The focus of the development clinics was:

• Physical fitness and injury prevention

• Core skill development

A number of AHL players and state coaches gave up their time to run the clinics with their success and standing within the

community reflected by participation numbers:

under 12 boys/girls

(24 Clinics; 18 regional, 6 metro): 1,110

under 13 girls: 129

under 13 boys: 120

u13 State Championships

Further development coaching was provided prior to both the u13 Girls and Boys State Championships with a combined 751

girls and boys attending these clinics on day one of the Championships.

Official’s DevelopmentWe’ve continued our work in developing not just players but also umpires and officials with 90 Level 1 Accreditations and 60

Level 2 accreditations completed in 2013. In addition to this we’ve also conducted four Technical Officials Courses with 40 new

participants in attendance.

Active After School Communities ProgramHockey NSW and the Australian Sports Commission (ASC) have come together to form a partnership in delivering the

Active After School Communities (ASSC) Program within targeted areas across NSW. The purpose of this partnership is to

not only increase awareness in schools about how hockey can be a fun and safe sport but also to capture the players that

transfer from a AASC programs to a club.

MARkETING REPORTAt the beginning of 2013 I stepped into the newly created role of Media and Database Coordinator and though a large part of

the role has been overseeing the implementation of the IMG database system and providing support to Clubs and Associations,

the role has given me the opportunity to identify numerous ways in which we, as a whole, can better promote the game of hockey

within NSW.

While the new IMG database system has proved frustrating for Clubs and Associations at times, it does currently do two things

particularly well:

Firstly it allows us to capture accurate playing data to monitor trends and growth over time. Current participation numbers within

NSW suggest that there is almost an exact 50-50 split between senior and junior players, a trend that is unique amongst most

sports. While the split is testament to hockey’s ability to retain players and Masters Programs, it’s probably also indicative of

the lack of growth in the sport in recent years and something that the Board is currently addressing through a number of new

strategic initiatives.

The second thing the IMG system has allowed us to do is segment the database to ensure targeted promotion of programs.

The promotion of the u12 Development Clinics in 2013 has been a shining example of how we can best utilise the IMG system

segment players based on age and location to maximise participation in camps, clinics, courses and other development

opportunities.

In 2013 we’ve made significant improvements to the look and activity level of our social media channels. By their very definition,

social media should be ‘social’ and we’ve made a committed effort to embrace to social aspects of these platforms. As a

result, our Facebook Likes have increased by 65% (approximately 1,400 new Likes) with activity in the group increasing by

approximately 600%. Likewise Twitter has shown mark able improvements with a 250% increase in the number of followers and a

substantial increase in activity levels.

Hockey NSW has lacked continuity in the area of Marketing and Communications in the past. There have been a number of

people who have gone through this current position in recent years and it is not difficult to see when each new person both

begun and finished their term of employment based on the style and quality of the written and visual material that was being

produced and distributed at the time. Moving forward, we will be making a concentrated effort made to create the framework to

not only ensure consistency in the Hockey NSW brand across multiple platforms, but also it will also be a worthwhile exercise in

succession planning for Hockey NSW in this area of the business.

FACILITIES COMMITTEE REPORTThe Facilities Committee have had another busy year. The Facilities Committee in 2013 is comprised of Sue Savage (Chair),

David Alexander, Garry Bull, Greg Pullman, Graeme Mackenzie (Board representative) and Lauren Woods (staff member).

The Committee has continued to administer the Grants Programme according to its current practice, as well as continue to

engage the community on matters related to facilities and has undertaken a more proactive role and focus on sustainability.

To date, $3.6 million of the $5.5 million NSW Government Facilities Funding Grant has been expended to the following facilities;

Tamworth Hockey Association, Parkes Hockey Association, Macarthur Hockey Association, Moorebank Liverpool District

Hockey Club and Northern District Hockey Association. Other projects that will be receiving funding with completion in 2014

will be; The Sutherland Shire Hockey Association and Blacktown City Council.

In addition funding administration, other projects and initiatives were included in the committee’s focus during 2013. A number

of potential sites outside of those allocated for existing grant funding have been under discussion. The Committee has also

been active in providing guidance, recommendations, general advice and support to project sponsors and stakeholders as

well as reviewing issues to be resolved by local governing bodies.

Our focus for 2014 is to continue to raise hockey’s profile and develop stronger relationships with the NSW State Government

and its departments. After the success of our current funding from the Federal Government, maintaining and continuing to

develop these relationships with Government is key to secure future funding and government assistance.

In 2014 we will continue to engage with the Sustainability Committee for facilities development and planning as well as

conduct Community Outreach Workshops to provide practical tools in the planning and funding of new facility projects and

upgrades.

The Facilities Committee has a cooperative approach to engagement and support of the hockey community. We look forward

to our continued partnership with Hockey NSW, its members and members of government to advance the quality and

availability of facilities for hockey as we progress into 2014 and beyond.

HIGH PERFORMANCE REPORT Regional Academy of Sport ProgramsIn 2012 the parent and athlete feedback to Hockey NSW received in regard to the Regional Academy of Sport (RAS) programs

was essentially poor and as a result a complete review of the RAS programs were conducted to ensure alignment with Hockey

NSW player development priorities and Hockey Australia and Australian Winning Edge guidelines.

This proved to be a difficult task with some of the RAS programs not wanting to adhere to Hockey NSW requirements in relation

to athlete physical fitness requirements, development of essential core skills and game education.

The RAS programs are underway with Hockey NSW developing a RAS Co-operative Agreements, which state certain

requirements that must be met in order for the agreements to be valid. A complete review of the program will be conducted

at the conclusion of the program (April 2014).

NSW ARROWS REPORT

The Arrows of 2013 was one of the best teams I have been associated with as a coach or as a player. I have personally never

been involved with an Arrows team that had the degree of endeavour and played for each other and NSW in the manner in

which these players did.

In contrast to previous years we wanted to create equal opportunity for all players that were aspiring to be an Arrow in 2013.

After selecting an initial squad of 35 players at State Championships, we then conducted four trials where the final team was

chosen.

Due to injuries and retirements we lost five first choice players prior to departure meaning our travelling squad of 17 players

included 10 players still under 21.

The team was solidified throughout by the other states reports of the NSW team being decimated by injuries. Led by their co-

captains were impressive throughout and dismantled opposition teams on their way to easily qualifying for the finals round.

In the finals round, the Arrows needed either win or a draw in their final game against WA to ensure qualification to the Grand

Final. On the morning of the game, Casey Eastham, our best player and incredible leader, withdrew due to injury with Nina

khoury one of our rising stars and Jillaroos also withdrawing after she was struck with a bout of food poisoning.

With the score locked at 2-2 and just 31 seconds remaining, WA scored the goal that cost the Arrows their place in the Grand

Final, a spot they had rightfully earned after a fortnight of exceptional hockey. This was the only game the Arrows lost in 2013.

With Casey Eastham and Nina khoury back in the line-up the following day, The Arrows crushed the ACT to finish in

third place.

After brilliant campaigns with the Arrows, Casey Eastham, kelly White, Jade Close and Matilda Carmichael were chosen for

the Australian team at the conclusion of the tournament.

Special thanks must go to our incredible off field team that made an enormous contribution to the team in 2013. Jackie McRae,

a former Hockeyroo was the team’s manager but was also involved in the coaching of the group. Stewart Dearing, a former

kookaburra goalkeeper and the assistant coach was tremendous for the team while Ryan Johnson (video analyst) did a

tremendous job scouting our opposition for team meetings.

The 2013 Arrows never played two games the same. We constantly changed our style, formations and rotations to ensure we

could overcome opposition strategies, making us impossible to scout and prepare for.

Although shattered to miss the final, we know that we had developed as a team in many ways with our only disappointment

being that we now have to wait 12 more months to get back together and continue our drive toward a National Championship.

NSW WARATAHS REPORT

2013 was another case of so close, yet so far for the NSW Waratahs. Whilst we started slowly, we were unlucky, missing the

final by a single point but we were clearly one of the top two sides at the tournament.

The Waratahs played well throughout the tournament. Discipline cost us in the first two games against South Australia and

Queensland but we had done enough to qualify through to the top four finals round.

Our first game of the finals round was the game against the ACT and ended up costing us a place in the final. It was one

of those games and should never have been a draw, let alone a loss. It’s a shame to miss the final based on this one

performance, but that is the way the tournament was structured and it reinforces the need for the side to play well in each

and every game. Interestingly our statistics in this game were almost exactly the same as those in the bronze medal game,

also against ACT, which we won comprehensively.

We suffered setbacks as do most sides, by losing two of our more senior players to injury before the tournament.

Matthew Wark and kieran Govers had to pull out before the tournament with back and leg injuries respectively.

Matt’s experience and defensive ability was missed and kieran would have helped our Penalty Corner attack, which was

again below par for AHL level.

Despite the negative result, the side is relatively young. If the group can stay healthy and stay together, I’ve no doubt that

success at the National level is just around the corner for this group.

In the past two years we’ve really tried to establish a strong, proud culture into the playing group and have had some

success with the Baggy Blue caps. Before a players first game with the Waratahs they are presented with a baggy blue cap,

embroidered with a Waratah and player’s name across the back. This year we gave out six new caps with players previously

selected all making sure they had theirs with them. We need to continue developing a passion to play for NSW and the

Baggy Blue Caps are truly treasured by every player that receives one.

Getting players together is always an issue for NSW teams because of our reach into regional areas and also with National

programs based in Perth. I hope that this is something that can be addressed in future years as it will have a real positive

impact on team cohesion and tactical play.

The NSW Men’s Masters had a very successful year which culminated in the Australian Masters Championships being hosted at

Sydney Olympic Park.

Again it was a busy year and State Championships were held from O35 through to O63 age divisions with Bridges announced

as the naming rights sponsor of the Men’s Masters State Championships in 2013.

There was an increase in participation in the older age groups and the O35 age group which was encouraging.

Organisationally the committee ran well and I would like to thank the members of the committee for the hard work. It is a very

big task to organise and coordinate the large number of tournaments and all the players and teams for the nationals. Tony Nixon

as coordinator worked hard and I especially thank him along with the secretary Peter Hayes. Robert Redding had the difficult

task of coordinating all the selections and did this well and with transparency.

The Australian Masters Championships were coordinated by a committee from Sydney Masters and NSW Masters Committee

and was chaired by Carolyn Campbell. This was a very successful tournament with 74 teams competing over a two week

period. I thank and congratulate Carolyn on her achievements and hard work.

For NSW, 16 teams were selected to compete in 12 age divisions with great results, finishing with three division one titles

and three division two titles. From these Championships, there were a large number of players from NSW selected to play for

Australia in 2014 and a sincere congratulations to those players.

Financially the committee is in a good position to move forward with sufficient funds in reserve to support the members as

needed in the future.

As in any organisation improvement can be made and the committee will review this year and plan for the future.

The past 12 months have been a period of consolidation for the NSW Women’s Masters.

As noted last year, the Hockey NSW Women’s Masters State Championships are considered to be the largest hockey event

held in Australia and the 2013 Championships were no different. Held in late July in the half-state format they were hosted by

Hockey New England (North) and Parkes Hockey (South). Both Associations put in extraordinary efforts to ensure successful

and enjoyable events, held in the spirit of Women’s Masters: Participation, Friendship and Enjoyment.

Bridges were announced as the naming rights sponsor of the Women’s Masters State Championships and we look forward to

their involvement again in future years.

In 2014, the State Championships are scheduled to be conducted in the full-state format with the announcement of the host

Association pending.

The Australian Women’s Masters Championships were held in Adelaide from 27 September to 5 October. NSW teams were

entered in all six age groups (O35 – O60). At the conclusion of the Championships, NSW was awarded the Meg Wilson Trophy

for the best overall performance by a state for the third consecutive year. The Award came after dominant performances in all

age groups winning, three gold, two silver and one bronze medal.

The Hockey NSW Women’s Masters Committee congratulates all members who achieved selection in State and National teams

and all members who have assisted in making 2013 such a successful year.

EvENTS REPORT

The 2013 season has been another busy time for the Hockey NSW Events team, with increased participation in Indoor and

Field State Championships as well Country v City providing development opportunities to players, officials and coaches,

Australian youth Olympics and the Australian u18 Men’s Championships.

2013 also saw Hockey NSW secure event sponsorship with Catalyst Money purchasing naming rights to all Field and Indoor

State Championships.

Field State ChampionshipsThe Hockey NSW Events Team strived to ensure uniformity has been upheld across all State Championships, resulting in the

Field State Championships being conducted in Full State format apart from Women’s Masters Field State Championships.

We continued to run the u13 Field State Championships as a four day event, incorporating player and coaching development

sessions on Day 1 of the Championships. For the u13s we were also able to secure current Hockeyroos Coach Adam

Commens and Hockeyroo kellie White who attended the u13 Girls State Championships in Wagga Wagga, while Warren

Birmingham and a number of NSW Waratahs players were in attendance at the u13 Boys State Championships.

Indoor State ChampionshipsDuring the 2012-13 seasons Hockey NSW experienced a significant growth in the number of teams participating at Indoor

State Championships. As a result of these increases it has been necessary to consider a new structure for the junior age

National and International ChampionshipsHockey NSW was lucky enough to host the Australian u18 Men Championships at the Newcastle International Hockey Centre.

Hockey NSW and Sydney Olympic Park also played host to the Australian youth Olympics which included for 8 international

hockey teams and saw both Australian teams win gold medals.

On a personal note I would personally like to thank all of the volunteers who have worked beside Andrew Mousikos and myself

at various hockey events this year. Without your continued support and enthusiasm we would simply not be able to provide

quality events for the greater hockey community.

Report on the Financial Report We have audited the accompanying financial report of Hockey New South Wales Limited, which comprises the statement of financial position as at 30 June 2013, and the statement of comprehensive income, statement of changes in equity and statement of cash flows for the year ended on that date, a summary of significant accounting policies and other explanatory notes and the directors’ declaration of the company at the year’s end or from time to time during the financial year. Directors’ Responsibility for the Financial Report The directors of the company are responsible for the preparation and fair presentation of the financial report in accordance with Australian Accounting Standards – Reduced Disclosure Requirements (including the Australian Accounting Interpretations) and the Corporations Act 2001. This responsibility includes designing, implementing and maintaining internal control relevant to the preparation and fair presentation of the financial report that is free from material misstatement, whether due to fraud or error; selecting and applying appropriate accounting policies; and making accounting estimates that are reasonable in the circumstances. The directors also state, in accordance with Accounting Standard AASB 101: Presentation of Financial Statements, that compliance with the Australian Accounting Standards – Reduced Disclosure Requirements ensures that the financial report, comprising the financial statements and notes, complies with Australian Accounting Standards – Reduced Disclosure Requirements. Auditor’s Responsibility Our responsibility is to express an opinion on the financial report based on our audit. We conducted our audit in accordance with Australian Auditing Standards. These Auditing Standards require that we comply with relevant ethical requirements relating to audit engagements and plan and perform the audit to obtain reasonable assurance whether the financial report is free from material misstatement.

An audit involves performing procedures to obtain audit evidence about the amounts and disclosures in the financial report. The procedures selected depend on the auditor’s judgment, including the assessment of the risks of material misstatement of the financial report, whether due to fraud or error. In making those risk assessments, the auditor considers internal control relevant to the entity’s preparation and fair presentation of the financial report in order to design audit procedures that are appropriate in the circumstances, but not for the purpose of expressing an opinion on the effectiveness of the entity’s internal control. An audit also includes evaluating the appropriateness of accounting policies used and the reasonableness of accounting estimates made by the directors, as well as evaluating the overall presentation of the financial report. We believe that the audit evidence we have obtained is sufficient and appropriate to provide a basis for our audit opinion. Independence In conducting our audit, we have complied with the independence requirements of the Corporations Act 2001. We confirm that the independence declaration required by the Corporations Act 2001, provided to the directors of Hockey New South Wales Limited on 30 October 2013, would be in the same terms if provided to the directors as at the date of this auditor’s report.


Auditor’s Opinion In our opinion: a. the financial report of Hockey New South Wales Limited is in accordance with the Corporations Act 2001, including:

a.) giving a true and fair view of the company’s financial position as at 30 June 2013 and of their performance for the year ended on that date; and b) complying with Australian Accounting Standards – Reduced Disclosure Requirements (including the Australian Accounting Interpretations) as described in Note 1 and the Corporations Regulations 2001.
