    BASIC INTRODUCTION OF OLED

OLED are the optoelectronic devices based on organic

materials and emit light when voltage applied to them.

    based on the phenomenon electroluminescence.

Provide brighter display with less power consumption.

    CONSTRUCTION OF OLED

    Cathode

    Emissive layer or electron transport

    layer ETL(e.g. polyflurene)

    Conductive layer or hole transport

    layer HTL(e.g. polyaniline)

    Anode(transparent)

    Substrate(glass or plastic)

    ORGANIC MATERIALS USED IN OLED

    The p-n junction is made

    from the organic compounds

    such as Alq3 and diamine,

    polyflurene , polyaniline etc.

    BASIC WORKING

The battery or power supply applies a voltage across the

    OLED

The current flows from cathode to anode.

Cathode gives electron to the emissive layer .

Anode removes electron from the conductive layer so there is

    excess of holes in it.

    CONT ..

At the junction of the two layers electrons recombines with the

    holes.

Due to recombination the electrons gives light in the form of

    photon.

The color of light depends on the molecule used in the

    emissive layer.

    TYPE OF OLED DISPLAY

    Passive matrix display

    Active matrix display

    Vertically stacked display

    Flexible OLED display

    Transparent OLED display

    PASSIVE MATRIX TYPE OLED

It consist of strips of cathode, organic

    layer, strips of anode.

The intersection of cathode and anode

    makes up a pixel .

    External circuitry supplies current.

    More power consumption than any

    other OLED display.

    Best suited for small screens.

    ACTIVE MATRIX TYPE DISPLAY

It have full layer of cathode ,organic

    material, anode.

    Anode overplayed by thin film

    transistor(TFT).

TFT determines which pixel get turned on

    to form an image.

    Less power consumption than passsive

    type.

    VERTICALLY STACKED OLED

Based on stacking the red, green and blue sub pixels on top of one another.

AdvantageHigher resolutionScalable to larger pixel size

    TRANSPARENT OLED

The substrate is either opaque or

reflective .It can be top only emitting or bottom

only emitting or top and bottomemitting

    ADVANTAGE OF OLED

    Very thin panel (.3mm)

    Self luminous

    Low power consumption

    High brightness

    Wide visibility (more than 170degree)

    CONT.

    Better response time

Very large displays are possible (more than 100 inch)

    Flexible substrate

    LIMITATIONS

    Smaller lifespan

    Higher cost

    Color balance issue

    Water damage

    USE OF OLED

    Car display

    Mobile ,television screen

    Digital camera

    Computer monitors

    INDUSTRIAL VIEW

Kodak was first to release a digital camera with an OLED

display in 2004 ,the Ko dak easyshare LS633 .

In 2007 Sony launched first OLED television XEL-1

Samsung developed a prototype laptop in 2008.
