DIY SUGAR SCRUB RECIPES

I was inspired by fellow bloggers on Pinterest. They got my innovative juices flowing and stimulated me to create my own version of each of the best homemade sugar scrubs. Massive thumbs up to all the very proficient and creative bloggers noted below!

WHY SCRUB WITH SUGAR YOU MAY WONDER?

Sugar is an herbal source of glycolic acid, which develops new skin cell production and breaks down the protein that maintains the useless cells placing onto your skin. The result is sparkling, polished, child smooth skin! You can use most of the sugar scrub recipes on your face or body. It is usually an excellent concept to do a test on your skin in a small place before applying on your entire face or body. Wait 24h for any response before applying to a larger area on your body or face.

If you have very touchy skin, I would recommend switching to oatmeal for lightly exfoliating in place of sugar. Salt scrub are superb but can be too tough on sensitive skin. I prefer to use salt only in feet scrubs! Take care of never scrub indignant skins or wounds.

Homemade sugar scrubs are also very cost effective, easy to make and brilliant to receive as gifts!

HOW TO MAKE HOMEMADE SUGAR SCRUBS?

The primary elements you will need are natural unrefined coconut oil, grapeseed or safflower oil and of route sugar! You may replace grapeseed oil or safflower oil with carrier oil like almond oil or sunflower oil. Simply remember that an oil has special heady scent and texture.

For example, if you use olive oil on your homemade sugar scrub, you will become with a greasy scrub. It is great to apply lightweight texture oil like safflower or grapeseed oil. Those oils will captivate in your skin without difficulty, making your skin nicely hydrated but no longer greasy.

HERE ARE SOME TIPS FOR DIY SUGAR SCRUB RECIPES:

(1) To finish a sandy surface for your sugar scrubs, utilize a ¾ measure of oil and 1 glass + ½ measure of sugar.

(2) Adding dried herbs, blooms, dirts, seeds and fruits in a scrub takes it to the following level!

(3) Using fruits in sugar scrubs help disposing of dead skin, peel and contains common vitamins.

(4) Replacing crisp fruits by basic oils makes the scrub last more.

Doris J. Barnes • 3

(5) Use cocoa sugar from dim hued scrubs yet lighter sugar for scrubs with pink or yellow shades (like the rose or grapefruit scrubs).

(6) Depending on the transporter oil you utilize, you may need to marginally conform the proportion sugar versus oil.

(7) The surface of wet sand is decent for a body scrub however at some point it makes it difficult to apply, consider making sugar scrub blocks, see formula underneath.

(8) Keep the sugar scrub impermeable and free of water or mugginess so it last more.

(9) If you utilize new fruit juices, new herbs, water or Aloe Vera (any sort of fluids) the scrub won't last long – presumably a couple days or a week the most. You also may wind up with shape or microscopic organisms so it's best to use inside a couple days and keep in the refrigerator.

(10) Using fruit powdered concentrates or dry herbs will permit your scrub to last longer without the utilization of additives.

CHAPTER 1 MATCHA SUGAR BODY SCRUB

I am a tea addict and when I noticed this green tea sugar scrub recipe, my eyes grew massive! I have been meaning to contain matcha in one of my recipe for some time.

The authentic recipe consists of a strong brewed tea but I would alternatively not consist of any water in this scrub, as it would make it go terrible extra speedy. I have used match tea in this sugar scrub recipe for its colorful color but because it is costly I have most effective used a teaspoon. It can additionally be irritant to the skin so it is satisfactory not to use too much.

I also had a few green tea extract on hand which add some powerful antioxidants to this body scrub. This makes this sugar scrub recipe stronger. Green tea is a wealthy in antioxidants, vitamin C, and vitamin E. It enables to restore the impact of ageing. When using extract, take care of following the guidance of the manufacturer and to never growth the recommended quantity.

Since I am in love with earl grey, I have introduced a little bit of bergamot essential oil. Bergamot important oil is phototoxic so (until you get the type that is bergapene free) make sure you wash your skin good and keep away from sun exposure right after exfoliating just to be on the safe aspect.

Grapefruit is a superb astringent, which means it is going to cut back pores. It additionally has exfoliating residences, which are best for shiny or acne-susceptible skin.

It is also wealthy in antioxidants and vitamins! I have used one complete grapefruit (peeled) and it offers an excellent salmon pink color to the scrub.

In addition, I modified the percentage of oil vs sugar so it has the right constituency without using juice. I have additionally introduced a few dried orange peel to growth the exfoliation.

CHAPTER 13 NON GREASY BODY OIL RECIPE

Making your own homemade body oil formula mix is the easiest thing you can make in your kitchen; regardless of the possibility that you don't know how to make a straightforward vinaigrette, I can assure you can make this body oil formula!

I've picked natural oils that are lightweight, non-greasy yet profoundly saturating.

This body oil formula mix is best connected directly after your shower so you can secure in the dampness for the day.

I've picked 3 of my most loved light bearer oils in this body oil formula: jojoba oil, camellia seed oil and safflower oil.

Jojoba oil is really a fluid plant wax and fundamentally the same as our skin sebum. It is emollient, incredible against wrinkles and will infiltrate your skin easily without leaving an oil film. Goodness and it's has a characteristic 4 SFP!

As I said some time recently, camellia seed oil is my record-breaking most loved transporter oil, it originates from the tea tree and has been utilized for a considerable length of time in Japan. Camellia seed oil is an awesome cancer prevention agent, in addition to it has hostile to microbial and against –inflammatory properties. It doesn't possess an

aroma similar to anything, is easily consumed by the skin and abandons it sleek!

Safflower oil has extraordinary advantages for the skin as it contains a high substance of omega-6 unsaturated fats which increases the recovery of new skin cells. It is also relieving and mitigating and lightweight. The natural safflower bearer oil is not costly which also makes it an awesome expansion to a body oil formula mix!

So you may consider what amount of this cost and is it justified, despite all the trouble to purchase bearer oil in mass to make your own body oil mix?

I've separated the cost underneath so you don't need to do the math!

Cost of natural transporter oil:

250 ml 8 oz natural brilliant jojoba oil = 26$

250 ml 8 Oz natural camelia seed oil = 16$

500 ml 16 oz natural safflower oil = 17$

Add up to cost: 59$ for 1L of natural transporter oils

The cost for one 100 ml body oil formula is just 6$!

You can make the entire cluster and give them as a gift or utilize them consistently.

Isn't' this an entirely reasonable method for saturating your skin with no chemicals!?

In addition, you got the chance to concede that there is something truly exciting in making and altering your own body oil formula mix.

CHAPTER 15 GOAT MILK SOAP RECIPE USING

FRESH GOATS MILK

There’s a great trick for using goat milk: to use frozen goat milk so the lye solution does not overheat the milk. Overheating milk will turn it dark and. When the soap in the mold overheats you can get all kinds of issues including mushrooming, separation, cracking or other issues.

If you are vegan, you could use coconut or almond milk instead.

Fresh Goat Milk Soap Recipe:

- Coconut oil – 20 oz

- Olive oil – 20 oz

- Rice bran oil – 5 oz

- Avocado oil – 5 oz

- Castor oil – 4 oz

- Shea butter – 5 oz

- Sweet Almond oil 5 oz

- Goat’s milk 18 oz

- Lye – 9 oz

46 • Organic Body Care

Directions:

First we create the lye solution.

Take the frozen milk out of the bags and chop into smaller pieces.

Weigh the required amount. I recommend putting a splash of water (about an ounce) with the goat’s milk to start the lye dissolving.

Create an ice water bath by putting ice cubes and water into a bowl big enough to set your lye container into.

Sprinkle about 1/4 of your lye and start mixing.

Important note: sprinkle your lye while mixing- do not dump it entirely into the goat’s milk unless you want it to clump! start with sprinkling about 1/4 of the lye and mix until it starts melting the goat’s milk.

Once it melts a bit, add another 1/4 of the lye and mix some more. Do this until you have completely mixed in the lye.

Put your lye solution aside, preferably in the cold water bath.

For the oils, start by melting the hard oils, including the coconut oil and the shea butter.

Add the liquid oils to the melted oils and add your chosen fragrance.

Doris J. Barnes • 47

Once we have the oils ready…it’s time to make soap!

Give the lye solution a good stir to break the globes you can see as a result of the fat in the milk.

Add the lye solution to the oils.

Bring the mixture to trace.

Pour into your molds. You can use any type of molds that you want but I recommend the larger volume ones.

Un-mold 24 hours later, slice into bars and cure for 4 or more weeks.

CHAPTER 25 COCONUT OIL SUNSCREEN RECIPE

In this homemade coconut oil sunscreen recipe, I use shea butter which has natural sunscreen properties and anti-inflammatory agents. What is not to love about coconut oil or its exotic Polynesian version Monoi!

Monoï (pronounced Mah-noy) is an ancient Tahitian word meaning “scented oil” in the Reo-Maohi language. Monoï is widely used among French Polynesians as a skin and hair softener.

Be careful, today’s marketplace is full with monoi oil imitations. Authentic Tahitian monoi oil follows a strict manufacturing code that oversees the entire process from handpicking the tiare flowers to storage and shipping of the final product.

This process has been validated and protected by an Appellation of Origin which was awarded to Monoi de Tahiti on April 1, 1992. In this recipe I use Zinc Oxyde which blocks both UVA and UVB rays.

As a food additive, zinc oxide is on the U.S. FDA’s generally recognized as safe. However, they are very limited studies and I would never use zinc oxide or Titanium Dioxide in any other cream than for the occasional sunscreen. Avoid sun exposure between 10 am and 4pm.

I believe nature has given us all the necessary healing tools to get better faster! Here are my top 3 essential oils to fight a cold and that never fail to impress me and my body:

WILD OREGANO ESSENTIAL OIL

This essential oil is truly a miracle of nature; it is a powerful antimicrobial and treats respiratory tract disorders. You should never use it undiluted (as most of essential oils). My trick is to take a teaspoon of raw organic honey and add 3 drops of wild oregano essential oil and swallow it straight down. Avoid having the essential oil touching the lining of your mouth as this will taste really bad and may burn…you’ve been warned! I find this oil the most efficient when I use it at the beginning of a sore throat and it usually gets rid of it in a few minutes…yep…that’s right!

78 • Organic Body Care

ORGANIC RAVENSARA (OR RAVINTSARA) ESSENTIAL OIL

My top 2 essential oils to fight a cold is called ravensara essential oil. This is antiviral and an immune stimulant. It comes from Madagascar and contains 50% of eucalyptol. It is great for sinus or lungs infections. I usually dilute 5 drops in a tablespoon of carrier oil (like almond or jojoba) and massage it on my throat, chest and back. It works very well whenever I have sore throats as a topical application diluted with a carrier oil.

ORGANIC NIAOULI ESSENTIAL OIL

Number 3 essential oils to fight a cold is Niaouli. It comes from an ever green tree in Australia and is great to clear infections such as bronchitis, catarrh and sinus. Niaouli essential oil is a very safe oil to use (always diluted!) and you could take a two drops in a glass of water at the first sign of a cold or flu, ask your pharmacist for more info. It also works well to use diluted in a carrier oil and massage on your throat, chest and back.

CHAPTER 30 FACE CARE: AYURVEDIC FACE MASK

RECIPE FOR ACNE

If you have over indulged in finger licking pastries and sweet chocolate last week end (like I did) and your face shows that you have gone too far. Do not worry, I got your back!

I think we can all agree that a breakout is no fun. So I’ve created this Ayurvedic face mask recipe for acne which will work wonders to restore balance, heal pimples and remove blackheads. Knowing how to make a face mask for acne can be a life savior (for your face and your wallet!).

If you are constantly battling with acne, I strongly suggest seeing a naturopath to find out what food intolerances you have. Making a face mask for acne is like a bandage when you need a surgery. Nothing beat prevention and a “healthy diet”! Beauty is inside out. I personally found out that removing refined sugar and dairy from my diet really help cleared my skin.

The problem with sugar is that it hid everywhere: in breads, sauces, drinks like lemonades, soda or fruit juice from concentrate, cereal, and of course any other processed foods.

Did you know that the location of pimples on your face can help pinpoint your body imbalances?

Doris J. Barnes • 83

Forehead: Your digestive system is having a hard time breaking down foods. Possible food intolerance.

Cheeks: Respiratory track imbalances and allergies trigger.

Nose: Heart and blood pressure imbalances.

Chin: Hormones imbalances.

Ayurveda is an ancient system of life (ayur) knowledge (veda) originating from India thousands of years ago. Without getting into too many details, Ayurveda is one of the oldest systems of medicine in the world, using natural herbs and minerals.

In this Ayurvedic face mask recipe for acne, I have used sacred lotus seed powder, amla fruit powder, multani mitti clay powder and organic rose hydrosol.

Sacred lotus seed powder is astringent (shrinks pores), helps regenerating skin cells and will give you a smooth and glowing skin. It is also gently exfoliating.

fruit powder is rich in vitamin C, it highlights skin tone and purify the skin. It is also good to flight wrinkles.

The multani mitti (fuller’s earth) clay detoxifies, purifies, balances and cleans your skin gently.

84 • Organic Body Care

This Ayurvedic face mask recipe for acne works as healing mask for pimples and to clean, restore your skin balances. Just remember to also look at the problem inside out. Your diet and lifestyle has the biggest impact on your skin.

Note: Always do a patch test when using new herbs on your skin to test if you are not allergic. Simply put a small amount of the mask on the inside of your elbow for 15 min and wait 24h to see if you have reaction. I know this may sound cumbersome to have to wait but it’s best to safe than sorry.

Ayurvedic face mask recipe for acne

Prep time: 5 mins

Total time: 5 mins

Ingredients

- 1 tsp of sacred lotus seed powder (nelumbo nucifera seed powder)

- 1 tsp of amla fruit powder (emblica officinalis fruit powder)

- 1 tsp of multani mitti clay powder (fuller’s earth clay)

- Organic Rose hydrosol or mineral water enough to form a thick paste.

Doris J. Barnes • 85

Instructions

1. Mix all the powders together in a glass, wood or ceramic bowl.

2. Add the rose hydrosol or mineral water enough to form a thick paste.

3. Do not use metal (spoon or bowl) as this can interfere with the clay properties.

4. If you don’t have a wooden or a plastic spoon, use your finger to mix the paste!

5. Apply on your face for 15 mins or until the mask starts to become dry.

6. Use every other day. You can also use this mask as a pot treatment daily before going to bed.

CHAPTER 31 BENTONITE CLAY MASK RECIPE –

BALANCING AND DETOXIFIER

This bentonite clay mask recipe is a gentle exfoliator and perfect for balancing oily, dry and sensitive skins. Bentonite clay is a natural detoxifier and purifier. The end result of this gentle bentonite clay mask recipe is a firm, suppler, more even tone and glowing looking skin. If you use it twice a week, it will help reducing the look of fine lines and wrinkles as well as face age spot and hyperpigmentation.

Take care of NEVER using metals while touching clays as the clay draws out the metals and absorbs them! If you use metal spoons or bowls you may end up with some metal components in your mask. Your clay will also be less effective in detoxifying your skin.

The French pink clay I’ve used here is optional but I just love the color!

French Pink Clay can be used to cleanse and detoxify the skin and remove dead skin cells. It can also be used to treat acne and sun damaged skin.

I’ve added rose water (hydrosol) which is also balancing for the skin, restore the skin’s PH and helps tighten pore, plus it smells divine!

Doris J. Barnes • 87

Be careful not to use rose flower imitations as there are sadly a lot of them on the market. Look for 100% natural rose flower hydrosol with no fragrance or other ingredients added. Rose water comes from the essential oil distillation process. It should not contain any “fragrance”, preservatives or any other chemicals.

If you do not have rose hydrosol on hand, you can also use mineral water or aloe vera juice.

Enough talking, let’s make this awesome balancing bentonite clay mask recipe; it will only take 5 minutes!

Balancing Bentonite Clay Mask Recipe

Prep time: 5 mins

Total time: 5 mins

Ingredients

- 14 tsp of Bentonite clay

- 4 tsp of 100% Natural Rose hydrosol

- 2 tsp of French Pink Clay

- 3 drops of rose geranium essential oil (a more cost effective essential oil than the very expensive rose absolute and smells divine!)

88 • Organic Body Care

Instructions

1. Combine all ingredients until they form a thick paste in a glass or wooden bowl with a wooden spoon or stick.

2. Apply a thick layer of the mask all over your face, except eyes and mouth.

3. Leave on for 20 minutes or until it is dried.

4. Rinse gently with warm water while massaging your skin for a few minutes.

5. Apply your moisturizer (checkout this homemade light moisturizer recipe here) and enjoy your healthy glowing skin!

6. This makes one application. It’s best to prepare just before using as it only take a few minutes.

CHAPTER 32 AQUAFABA FACE MASK RECIPE

Have you heard about Aquafaba? It is a revolutionary ingredient that you used to throw away…that is until now!

Aquafaba is the goopy slimy liquid that you find in the garbanzo bean cans. Crazy, right?! It is also pure magic…

It is an amazing egg white replacer and a breakthrough in vegan cooking! Once you start baking with Aquafaba, a whole new world of baking will open up to you!

I made some banana bread, pancakes, chocolate mousse, coco rocher, sweet potato gnocchi, muffins…get the strawberry chia seed vegan muffin recipe here. As you see I’ve been quite obsessed!

You can also make vegan cheese, mayo, butter, cakes, macaroons… the sky is the limit in the vegan world of cooking or baking!

I like to buy eden organics can food. Why? Because it is organic and most importantly the can lining do not contain BPA. BPA is another endocrine disrupting chemical and has been linked to cancer… Sadly it is very common and can be found in dental sealants, water bottles, the lining of canned foods and drinks, and many other products. So make sure your product packaging are BPA free!

AQUAFABA FACE MASK RECIPE.

I’ve added a little bit of fresh lemon juice as it is antibacterial and helps getting rid of blackheads. It is also a powerful astringent and reduces skin discolouration.

Tea tree essential oil is a natural antiseptic, antibacterial and anti-fungal. It works wonders to treat acne. Essential oils are powerful so make sure to not increase the dosage to avoid skin sensitivities.

CHAPTER 33 SHEA BUTTER LOTION RECIPE FOR

DRY SKIN

This shea butter lotion recipe is quite sinful and great for the change of season and to protect your face from cold, dry weather. Shea butter is packed with vitamin A, E, F and K. Always look for organic raw shea butter, grade A. Sometime, I also like using organic refined shea butter as it does not have any strong nutty smell. Just keep in mind, the refined shea butter won’t be as packed in vitamins as the raw organic shea butter by far. Now you must ask yourself what is more important for you? Smell, texture and comfort or getting the best available product on your skin? I’ll let you decide!

I’ve also used organic camellia seed oil which is definitely one of my favourite oil to use on my face. The geisha used it on their hair and skin,a well-kept secret (well until now!). It comes from the seeds of Camellia sinensis which is the plant that produces tea leaves.

Now it’s maybe not such a surprise that I am so in love with this oil since I’m a tea addict…! It is light, not greasy, absorbs easily, has barely any scent but it is emollient, anti-aging, astringent. Also very rich in oleic acid and vitamins A, B, D and E as well as Omega 3, 6 and 9.

Doris J. Barnes • 93

I’ve added a little bit of organic cocoa butter because it gives wonderful textures to lotion (not mentioning it is great for dry skins!)

- Water Phase: 10 tablespoons total – (47%)

CHAPTER 35 ORGANIC RICE FLOUR MASK &

SCRUB

Create this gentle, not expensive and easy to make rice flour mask and scrub with two simple ingredients.

Why Rice?

Well… it’s a well-kept secret from Japanese women that using a rice flour mask and scrub on a regular basis will lighten your skin and give a translucent glow to your face. Rice contains Ferulic acid which is an antioxidant and Allantoin, an anti-inflammatory agent.

You can use this rice flour mask every other day but I would advise not to scrub your face too often so you do not disrupt the fragile balance of your face skin.

ORGANIC RICE FLOUR MASK RECIPE INGREDIENTS:

- 2 teaspoon of organic brown flour

- 2 teaspoon of organic rose flower water (or lemongrass flower water or mineral water)

- 1 drop of frankincense essential oil

98 • Organic Body Care

Directions:

1. Mix all the ingredients together of this rice flour mask until you obtain a thick paste.

CHAPTER 36 ALOE VERA RECIPES FOR SKIN

I use aloe vera in most of my beauty care recipes as this plant is great for healing. You will find below a few aloe vera recipes for skin. Aloe vera is a species of succulent plant that grows in arid climates and is widely distributed in Africa, India and other arid areas. Aloe vera is useful in the treatment of wound and burn healing, minor skin infections…

The best aloe vera gel you can find is from the fresh leaves but if do not live in a dry climate, you can buy aloe vera gel or juice online at any heath food stores. Make sure you always buy organic aloe vera juice with 100% juice or gel with no preservatives. Unfortunately, most manufacturers add conservators and preservatives as aloe spoils easily so be sure to read the labels. You must keep it refrigerated once the bottle is open.

ALOE VERA RECIPES FOR SKIN

HOW TO PREPARE ALOE VERA GEL FROM FRESH LEAVES:

1. Choose aloe vera leaves that are large and mature, but still soft and succulent with plenty of moisture and gel inside. Avoid the small leaves as they will not contain enough gel.

100 • Organic Body Care

2. Cut the leave from the base of the plant and let the yellow sap (called aloin) runs out of the leaves for a few minutes on a towel.

3. When the yellow sap is all gone Take a sharp knife and use it to remove the spiky edges from the leaves.

4. The leaves will have spiky edges to protect the plants from animals that also like the sweet gel inside the leaves.

5. Once the thorns have been removed, use the paring knife to peel one side of the leaf, so that you will have access to the gel.

6. Use a tea spoon to transfer the gel to a sterilized can.

7. Add a few drops of grapefruit extract to help with preservation.

8. Always keep the fresh aloe Vera gel inside the fridge.

CHAPTER 37 ORGANIC AND NATURAL TONERS

RECIPES

I’ve never used commercial toners, never felt it was needed. In my opinion toners are just an invention from cosmetic giants to make us consume more. Most of commercial toners contains alcohol and while it does have a short lasting tightening effect, it ends up drying your skin and creating sebum imbalances.

I will share with you two easy to make, DIY Natural Toners Recipes below, Aloe vera gentle and soothing cleanser & Rose and Neroli cleansing water.

Your skin pH is a result of the skin’s acid mantle, a mixture of sebum (skin oils) and sweat that form on the surface of your skin. This acid mantle keeps the pH of your skin at about 4 to 4.5 (Remember, low pH like 1 to 5 is acidic, high pH 8 or above is basic, and the middle, around 7, is neutral.) This slightly acidic pH is a good thing on your skin because it helps ward off harmful bacteria.

When you wash your skin, you strip away this acid mantle. I never use any soap, neither wash nor use toner on my face and do not recommend you to use any as it disrupt the fragile sebum balance of your skin.

Doris J. Barnes • 103

Of course when you are to wash your face with soap, the switch from washing your face to just rinsing with warm water will be troublesome for most (it was for me when I made the switch 5 years ago) but you will be glad you did.

Washing your face with an alcohol base toner or soap remove the sebum that is supposed to protect your skin and you end up with oily skin as your skin is trying to create more sebum to create that natural barrier. In the end you end up with an imbalanced and too oily skin which can create pimples and black heads.

To help you make the switch you can your natural alternative such as aloe vera juice, rose, neroli and lavender flower water. They are very gently cleansing and hydrating your skin without removing too much of the natural sebum. You can use them every day but also try to just rinse your face with warm (not hot) water. You can also use the floral water to remove make up.

CHAPTER 38 HOW TO USE ARGAN OIL FOR HAIR

AND SKIN

On my last trip to Morocco I was introduced to Argan Oil, also called the golden oil for its fabulous rich yellow colour. Moroccan women still swear by it as a beauty oil which hydrate and heal their hair and skins.

Argan Oil has many benefits and is naturally rich in vitamin E, carotenes (giving you that nice and natural tanned glow!), squalene and fatty acids.

HOW TO USE ARGAN OIL FOR HAIR

Here are a few examples on how to use argan oil for hair and include it in your daily routine for maximum results.

- You can use argan oil on your hair as a mask and leave it on for minimum 30 minutes or better overnight. Make sure you massage your scalp thoroughly and spread evenly on your hair. Shampoo in the morning.

- Use a few drops of argan oil in your palm as a conditioner after your shampoo on wet hair, massage it on your ends and dry as usual as a leave in conditioner. It works wonder on frizz and dry hair.

106 • Organic Body Care

- add a few drops of argan oil to your shampoo as a moisturizer while you clean your hair.

HOW TO USE ARGAN OIL ON SKIN

Use it every day as a massage on the face before going to bed and in the morning for at least a month to show maximum results against wrinkles.

Use it in 10% dilution in homemade creams or face oils. I like to create my own blend with other unique and rare oils like kukui oil to make it lighter but it also works just by itself. You don’t need a lot…Less is better.

Seek organic Argan oil cold pressed from Morocco (to be honest even it is not certified organic; it is most likely that no pesticides have been used since Morocco is still preserved from all that cr..). You can find online on mountain rose herbs and amazon.

Be extremely wary of fake and diluted Argan oil, always read the labels!

Make sure you choose 100% Argan oil or nothing at all, otherwise you will end up with a fake argan oil.

Doris J. Barnes • 107

FUN FACT:

In ancient time the Berbers of Morocco gathered Argan pits directly from the pooh of goats which climbed the argan trees to eat their fruits. The pits left undigested on the floor were cleaned and then pressed to make the nutty oil used in cooking and cosmetics.

CHAPTER 42 HAIR CARE

No shampoo for me anymore! I haven't shampooed my hair in an entire year ... no shampoo, no conditioner, no hair styling products - absolutely no commercial hair care products have touched my hair in an entire year.

My hair is healthier and more manageable than it has ever been in my life!

Why Did I Do This?

Well it has been long known to me the unhealthy, dangerous and toxic ingredients that are contained within all those pretty bottles of shampoo and conditioners on the store shelves.

I tried 'natural' and 'healthy' brands of shampoo and conditioner but still found dubious items in their ingredient lists that I really didn't want on my head.

I tried making my own shampoo and conditioner using completely natural ingredients but I was never happy with how they worked or felt.

Then I stepped back and remembered my philosophy of 'just keeping it simple'.

Life is always at its easiest and most enjoyable when things are simple and uncomplicated.

Enter Apple Cider Vinegar, Baking Soda and Water.

Those 3 things are the only things that have touched my hair and scalp in the past year.

Some people refer to this as the 'no poo' method i.e. no shampoo. I hadn't heard of this term when I had my epiphany to wash my hair simply but since I have been doing this I have come to realize that there are many others out there also doing this and there is actually a (growing) phrase to describe this called the 'no poo' method.

So How Does It Work?

1. Wash with baking soda and water

2. Rinse with apple cider vinegar and water (I use raw organic apple cider vinegar)

3. Use fingertips to massage scalp and rinse hair

Note that there are no bubbles or foam when you do this. You may be accustomed to always having bubbly foam when you clean your hair but remember that foam is not necessary for clean hair. And the ingredient (SLS - Sodium Lauryl Sulfate) that causes most shampoos to foam is very unhealthy.

Baking soda, apple cider vinegar and water are extremely good cleansers. No shampoo is needed. Commercial shampoos can dry your scalp leading to dandruff and itchy scalp. Apple cider vinegar is

116 • Organic Body Care

actually a very effective dandruff remedy and preventative against dandruff.

Here is How I Wash with No Shampoo

I simply started by mixing baking soda with water (about 1 tbsp shaken into about 8oz of water). This I use to wash my hair and I do so by simply pouring the baking soda / water mixture over my wet hair in the shower and massaging my hair and scalp with my fingertips.

Then I rinse.

Then I do the same thing with 1-2 tbsp of apple cider vinegar mixed into 8 oz of water. This serves as a nice finishing rinse.

Then rinse well and you're done!

Basically the water and my fingertips do most of the work. No need for fancy (and unhealthy) chemicals. Use your fingertips to massage your scalp really well.

This massage brings circulation to your scalp which will do the most to nourish your hair and keep it shiny and manageable.

After a couple of weeks, I basically stopped using the baking soda / water mixture.

Doris J. Barnes • 117

From then on I would just wash with water and rinse with the diluted apple cider vinegar and sometimes I would just use water alone.

So simple and so easy!!

Does It Really Work?

The short answer is a resounding YES.

The longer answer is that you need to have patience and persistence to let your hair adjust and detox. It isn't always easy to go through this part but if you can persevere the rewards are so great!

What Does It Mean to Let Your Hair Adjust and Detox?

Well, if you are like most people, your hair has had years and years of daily bombardment of shampoos, conditioners, hair styling products, etc. It takes time for the residues of all these nasty chemicals to leave.... this is the detoxing part.

The adjusting part means that it will take your hair, scalp and hair follicles time to re-adjust back to their normal state. For so long things have been clogged up and covered up with chemicals and other unnatural ingredients. As these unnatural ingredients are removed, your hair and scalp will slowly begin to create its normal amount of healthy oils.

118 • Organic Body Care

This will take time. Your hair will go from being very dry to very oily to very frizzy to very heavy (and everything in between) while the norm is being reached.

It is here where you really need to be committed to what you are doing. It will pass!!

For me it took a good 2 months before my scalp and hair re-adjusted to its norm. During those 2 months there were many days of really awful looking and awful feeling hair but I persevered and after about 2 months my hair looked and felt better than ever and has been that way ever since.

Will This Work for Everybody, Every Hair Type?

I don't know. I can only share with you my experience. I have heard of many others having benefits doing this and it is my feeling that everyone can benefit if enough patience and commitment is engaged. I also strongly believe that eating right, exercising and other healthy lifestyle choices all play a role in the health of your hair. Have you tried? What I can tell you is that;

-I was never able to manage my hair without a ton of conditioner in it every single time I showered.

-Without a ton of conditioner my hair used to be full of really big tangles.

Doris J. Barnes • 119

-I was never able to wear my hair down as it would always fall limp into my face and the fly away ends would annoy me as they tickled my face.

And this no shampoo method works wonderfully for me.

What Do I Love About No Shampoo Hair Care?

- I no longer feel dependent on store bought concoctions to wash / condition my hair.

- I save SO MUCH money not buying any of those store bought concoctions.

- When travelling, I have nothing to pack (well maybe a small bottle of apple cider vinegar).

- I rest easy knowing that I am putting no damaging chemicals on my scalp, so close to my brain.

- I love knowing that I am not contributing to polluting the water system (every single thing you use in your shower runs down the drain and enters our collective water system).

- I love that I can now wear my hair down if I choose and my hair feels great day after day.

- I love the soft and silky feel of my hair.

120 • Organic Body Care

- I love the manageability and shine that my hair now has.

- I love that this is so simple, healthy and natural.

I strongly encourage you to give this no shampoo or 'no poo' method a try.

Hair care recipes that you can make at home with natural, organic ingredients are a valuable asset to your health. When you put products on your hair they come into contact with your skin through which things can be absorbed.

Using homemade hair care products allows you to put only the best ingredients on your body.

General Hair Care Tips

• Put a filter on your shower head to filter out unhealthy substances in municipal tap water

• Follow this no shampoo method for washing hair

• Don't wash hair too often

• Use shampoo only on the roots of hair, when you rinse it will reach the rest

• Stay away from harsh dyes and chemical additives in commercial hair care products

Doris J. Barnes • 121

• If you must use commercial shampoos/conditioners, dilute them

For best results always use organic ingredients and remember to start all your recipes with LOVE - it is the secret ingredient that makes everything come out better.

Here is more information about some of the ingredients used in these hair care recipes and where they can be found.

Apple Cider Vinegar:

Apple cider vinegar is wonderful at helping to heal from dandruff and dry scalp. Use it regularly (1-2 times a week) for a healthy scalp and gorgeous shiny hair free from build-up.

Apple Cider Vinegar Hair Rinse

- 1-3 oz Apple Cider Vinegar

- 1-2 cups warm water

Adjust amounts for longer or shorter hair.

This is the simplest recipe yet! Use this as a final rinse on your hair, massage through scalp and to hair ends. Great to remove build up and for healing from dandruff. Will leave your hair soft, shining and glowingly healthy.

122 • Organic Body Care

The vinegar scent will disappear as your hair dries. You can also add essential oils and herbs to mask the scent (see below recipe).

Keep a pre-mixed bottle in your shower so you have it handy.

Herbal Hair Rinse

- 2 oz herbs eg horsetail, lavender, sage, rosemary, comfrey

- 2 cups organic apple cider vinegar

- 2 cups water

- Essential Oils (optional)

On stovetop, bring Apple Cider Vinegar to a light boil. Remove from heat and add herbs of your choice. Cover and let steep for at least 30 minutes. Strain and add water.

Same as the above recipe, use as a final rinse to add shine and softness to your hair.

Different herbs have really great properties to help the health of your hair. See below for more information. The vinegar scent will be masked by the wonderful scents of the herbs you add and essential oils can also be added for fragrance.

Doris J. Barnes • 123

MORE INFORMATION ABOUT SOME OF THE INGREDIENTS MENTIONED ABOVE:

Horsetail contains silica and sulfur which help to strengthen hair, bones and nails. When used in a hair care recipe it helps with dandruff and strengthens the hair. For more information and/or to purchase horsetail, click here.

Lavender has a beautifully uplifting fragrance and has a long history as a cleansing herb. It is also known to stimulate hair growth.

Sage will stimulate your scalp thereby stimulating hair growth. It is good for oily hair and to bring colour back to grey hair.

Rosemary is good for oily hair and in helping with dandruff issues. It will also stimulate hair growth and helps to bring colour back to grey hair.

Comfrey is great for dry hair and in helping with dandruff issues.

Essential Oils are amazing to have on hand. They have a variety of uses including being added to many of your homemade products. Essential oils are the oils extracted from a plant by steam distillation. They are pure and highly concentrated and, so, a very little goes a long way. With essential oils always be sure to purchase from a trusted source and get oils that are therapeutic grade. To buy, online, from a source that I trust for essential oils, click here, I am always impressed with their high

quality. Essential oils are anti-microbial, anti-fungal, anti-viral and antibiotic which make them ideal for many applications from cosmetics to medicines to cleaning products. Adding them to your products will also help to preserve and extend the life of your homemade creations.

CHAPTER 43 NO POO SHAMPOO RECIPE

That’s it…I finally have gone NO POO! Here is one of the no poo shampoo recipe I use below:

Soapwort is a plant and has an ancient reputation for treating skin conditions such as psoriasis, eczema, and acne. It does give a little lather but don’t expect big bubble like a commercial shampoo. In this no poo shampoo recipe I add a little bit of Xantham gum to thicken and for easier use. It is obtained from corn sugar and it is one of the most common thickening or stabilizing agents used in foods, cosmetics and medicines.

NO POO SHAMPOO RECIPE INGREDIENTS

Natural Hair Wash recipe with Soapwort and Hibiscus Flower

- 2 tablespoons of dried soapwort root

- 1 tablespoon of dried sage for dark hair or of chamomile flower for blond hair and hibiscus flowers for red hair ( I have used hibiscus flowers for this recipe; it gives a nice pink color to the shampoo). Lavender and rosemary are good for all type of hair.

- 3 cup of filtered water

- 1 tablespoon of liquid honey

126 • Organic Body Care

OPTIONAL: 1 TABLESPOON OF APPLE CIDER VINEGAR

- ½ teaspoon or more of xantham gum*

- 10 drops of lavender essential oil

- 20 drops of tea tree essential oil

- 10 drops of peppermint essential oil

DIRECTIONS:

1. Boil the dried soapwort root and chosen herbs and simmer for 20 minutes.

2. Cover the pot to avoid losing too much water. Let infuse and cool for 5 minutes and strain.

3. Add the honey and the apple cider vinegar. Mix well.

4. Add the xantham gum, and start whipping with an electric mixer, after a few minutes, the liquid will turn into a thick gel.

5. If it is still too liquid after 5 minutes, add a little more xantham gum.

6. Once cool, add the essential oils.

7. Use tea tree if you have a itchy scalp or dandruff. Pour it in a glass bottle and keep in a fridge for a maximum conservation. This can keep about 10 days.

CHAPTER 44 NATURAL DANDRUFF SHAMPOO

RECIPE – ORGANIC BEAUTY RECIPES

HOW TO GET RID OF DANDRUFF NATURALLY

With the season change, our scalp can become dry, itchy and flaky. This easy natural dandruff shampoo recipe will work wonders on those nasty flakes…Dandruff are not always easy to get rid of but with this homemade natural dandruff shampoo recipe and with 2 or 3 applications, you will be surprised of the results!

Tea Tree oil is antiseptic and anti-fungal, coconut oil is moisturising and will make your hair soft and shiny! The origin of dandruff is not well known, it can be associated with a fungus called malassezia or pityrosporum.

This fungus normally exists on the scalp without causing problems, but it can overgrow because of stress or hormone imbalances. Also watch your diet as dandruff may come from candida and yeast excess. Cut sugar, alcohol, non wholefooods and anything that is already processed…Think prevention instead of cure!

NATURAL DANDRUFF SHAMPOO RECIPE:

- 2 tablespoon of organic NON refined coconut oil

CHAPTER 45 ORGANIC OILS FOR HAIR

CONDITIONING

Bad hair day? Don’t despair! Here are my top 3 oils for hair conditioning. There are many benefits in using carrier oils as part of your daily natural hair care routine. You can either do a once a week as a deep treatment by leaving the oil for one hour or better overnight before washing the next day. You can also use the carrier oil of your choice after shampooing by massaging your wet hair with a small amount as a leave in conditioner. A teaspoon of the oil for long hair or less for shorter hair will do the trick! Remember, for extra shine and not to damage your hair, it’s always better to let your hair dry naturally instead of using the hair drier but well…unfortunately we don’t all live in the Caribbean,

1. AVOCADO OIL

Avocado Oil is full of vitamins (A, B1, B2, D, E, and Beta carotene) and also contains amino acids, sterols, pantothenic acid, lecithin, and other essential fatty acids. Avocado oil works great for dry, rough and brittle hair as a deep conditioning. Oh and did you know it is also a natural sunscreen (SFP 4 to 15 depending on the oil quality)?

130 • Organic Body Care

2. ARGAN OIL

This Moroccan is rich in omega 3 and 9 fatty acids, it is also perfect for rough and dry hair. I

love how it tames my frizz and moisturise without leaving my hair greasy. Be careful when buying Argan oil, since there is a lot of hype around this oil, a lot of companies are using the name argan on the packaging and not even using the argan oil itself or it may only contain 5% of argan oil. Always buy 100% organic argan oil with no additives or preservatives! And trust your noise, argan oil has a somewhat nutty, spicy and oily scent which you may find unpleasant.

3. CAMELIA SEED OIL

Another favourite of mine as it leaves my hair smooth and shiny. It is great for all hair, even fine hair as it does not leave a greasy film and absorbs quite rapidly. It is one of the best kept secrets in the cosmetic and hair care industry, try for yourself!

CHAPTER 46 RHASSOUL CLAY MASK RECIPE

FROM MOROCCO

Another wonder from Morocco, this rhassoul clay mask recipe has been used for over 12 centuries and is rich in magnesium, silica, potassium and calcium. It is used to clean hair and skin, help regulate sebum imbalances, fights hair flakes and will leave your hair soft and shiny….

This Rhassoul Clay Mask Recipe is definitely one of my favorite secret beauty recipe from north Africa!

You can also use this rhassoul clay mask recipe on your face as a cleanser, simple put it on your face, scrub gently and massage your skin and rinse after a few minutes while the mask is still wet. It is very gentle and does not disrupt the sebum of your skin. I personally use it every other day on my face by wetting the clay with a little bit of water in the palm of my hand, while in the shower. Can’t get any easier than that!

Ifyou have oily skin, remove the olive oil and just use the rhassoul clay and water or aloe vera.

If you have sensitive skin, remove the lemon which can be too harsh on delicate skin.

When you buy rhassoul clay, beware of imitation and make sure it is quarry mined, sun dried and untreated. The only place rhassoul clay can be found

132 • Organic Body Care

is in Morocco so check the origin of the clay on the label before buying.

RHASSOUL CLAY HAIR MASK INGREDIENTS:

- 3 tablespoons of Rhassoul clay from morroco (beware of imitations!)

- 1 tablespoon of liquid honey

- ½ freshly squeezed lemon juice

- 3 tablespoons of warm (not hot) water

DIRECTIONS:

1. Mix honey, lemon juice and warm water first then add to the Rhassoul clay in a ceramic or glass bowl until it forms a thick and smooth paste.

2. Apply on wet hair and massage your scalp and hair thoroughly and let the mask sit for 10 minutes.

3. Rinse well.

4. Shampoo if necessary.

5. PS: Rhassoul clay can dry hair; to protect your hair, I suggest using a little bit of olive or jojoba oil on the ends before you apply the mask.

OWN LIPSTICK

HOW TO MAKE YOUR OWN LIPSTICK LIKE A PRO!

I wanted to make a homemade lipstick that looks like the one you get in stores. Turns out how to make your own lipstick like a pro is not as hard as you can imagine. Packaging and a few tools can sometimes make a world of difference!

How to make your own lipstick like a pro!

Total time: 35 mins

Ingredients

- 1 tsp natural red colorant 10% (Natural carmine CI 75470 (obtained from cochineal) on sunflower oil carrier)

- or try to the one I found on amazon.com

- Lipstick tubes– If using an old lipstick container one make sure it is clean, dried and sterilized.

Instructions

1. Melt the oil, butter and waxes in a double boiler on low heat until melted.

2. Add the colorant, mix well.

3. Pour in the empty lipstick tube as explained above.

4. Put in the freezer for 15 minutes.

5. Unmold as per instructions.

Doris J. Barnes • 137

I found those beautiful lipstick containers that have a silver body and cap, with glossy silver ring that looks exactly like the one you can buy at major brand store. You can get those lipstick containers or empty lipstick tubes on Aroma Zone if you live in france or Amazon.com

When I was done with the final lipstick in hand, I was almost as excited as when I made my first homemade face cream!

The secret to making this homemade and organic lipstick like a pro is the lipstick silicon mold!

It will give the perfect lipstick shape. This homemade lipstick recipe is not a regular lip balm recipe as there are a few steps you need to do with the silicon mold. This silicon mold has been custom made by Aroma-zone. It’s a French company that sells great quality beauty care ingredients. The only hiccup is that you most likely will have to pay a custom (tax) fee if you do not live in France. You could also decide to get another lipstick mold I found on amazon. I have not tried this one yet but it has good reviews!

This organic lipstick recipe is without beeswax and could be a vegan lipstick recipe if you replaced the natural carmine red colorant by iron oxydes. Instead of beeswax I’ve used rice bran wax, candelilla wax and carnauba wax.

Why so many waxes you may wonder?

138 • Organic Body Care

It is because it will give the right creamy and thick texture to your homemade lipstick. This is more suitable for color-rich lipstick. It has a soft satin and semi-matte finish and stay one for more than 5 hours.

It will moisturize your lips while showing intense color.

Rice Bran Wax comes from the cold press de-waxing of the rice bran oil. It can be used as a thickener and has emollient properties.

Candelilla wax is a wax derived from the leaves of the small Candelilla shrub native to northern Mexico. It has great protecting properties and is an effective emollient. Plus it adds a nice gloss to lipsticks.

Carnauba wax comes from the leaves of the Brazilian palm tree Copernica Cerifera also referred as the “tree of life”. It is used as a thickening agent for lipstick and if one of the hardest of natural waxes.

I chose a red carmine color for this lipstick but you could create your own shade by mixing 1 tsp of camellia seed oil with mica or iron oxyde of your choice. I suggest mixing a very small amount of mica or iron oxydes together to get the color you are looking for BEFORE you incorporate into the camellia seed oil.

Doris J. Barnes • 139

STEP BY STEP HOW TO USE THE LIPSTICK SILICON MOLD

1. Remove the cover and the base of the lipstick container

2. Turn the bottom white part of the mechanism to the maximum in order to have the transparent inner part up.

3. Clip the transparent inner part in the lipstick mold

4. Put the lipstick mold upside down on a table and start pouring through the bottom of the body of the empty case.

5. Pour the melted lipstick mixture quickly inside the lipstick container.

6. Try not to exceed the little white gate.

7. Place the entire (+ mold body of the case) 15 minutes in the freezer in the same position as casting.

8. To unmold, put the lipstick upright and unmold gently the silicon mold.

9. Turn the mechanism to retract the lipstick stick inside the body of the container, then put the base and the cover.

10. Clean the silicon mold with warm water and soap. Let dry before you use again.

CHAPTER 49 LIP SCRUB RECIPE

It so good, you could eat it. No, seriously what follows is an edible lip scrub recipe…does it get any better than this?! In this easy to make lip scrub recipe, I’ve used ingredients you should be able to find in your kitchen. And if you don’t have them on hand, you can certainly go for a quick run to your nearest natural food store and use those ingredients in other delicious food recipes…I’m thinking gluten free moist chocolate cake, vegan hot chocolate…mmm ok… sorry to digress here!

because it is an awesome exfloliator. Brown sugar contains glycolic acid, also known as AHA, which helps reducing wrinkles, removing dead cells and increasing skin cells turnover. Brown sugar and maple syrup are natural humectants. They will draw the outside moisture to your skin.

Coconut oil is also a great moisturizer as you probably know and will make your lips smooth like silk.Raw cocoa powder is very high in antioxiants and also includes caffeine and theobromine. Those two ingredients help getting a suppler skin.

Did you know that eating raw cacao makes you happy? (ok maybe you did know that…!) It contains phenylethylamine which is the same feelings you get when you are in love.

Doris J. Barnes • 141

Last but not least, I’ve added a little bit of organic cinnamon powder. Cinnamon powder will plump up your lips for a short while as it increases blood circulation. A light tingling sensation is normal. Just remember to use cinnamon powder wisely. Do not to increase the amount of cinnamon powder in this lip scrub recipe as it can irritate your skin.

INGREDIENTS FOR THIS CHOCOLATE LIP SCRUB RECIPE

- 1 teaspoon of organic raw cocoa powder

- 0.5 teaspoon of organic coconut oil

- 1 teaspoon of organic 100% maple syrup or raw liquid honey

- 1 teaspoon of organic cane brown sugar

- 0.5 teaspoon of organic cinnamon powder

DIRECTIONS FOR THIS LIP SCRUB RECIPE

1. Mix all ingredients together in a small cup until they are well blended.

2. Apply this paste on your lips and gently massage your lips for a few minutes

3. If you want a more “plumping” effect leave on this lip scrub for 5 minutes

4. Whip off or eat the scrub (yes, I said eat, a little treat does not hurt anyone especially

CHAPTER 50 LIP GLOSS RECIPE – LUSCIOUS LIP

WHIP

Our lips can really suffer in the winter, especially if you live somewhere like me… in cold artic like conditions!

This lip gloss recipe I created will double as a moisturizer and repair chapped or dry lips. If you want luscious, healthy and glossy lips, this lip gloss recipe is for you! This lip gloss recipe has a constituency of whipped butter and is not runny.

I love Montreal but the winter is really harsh on my skin, the positive is that it pushes me to be creative and come up with awesome recipes like this one: all natural, easy to make, cheap and super potent!

Of course, I’ve used all natural ingredients and did not include petroleum nor lead or aluminum which are sadly common ingredients in lipstick and lip balms. I also did not use any mica or natural colors in this lip gloss recipe but you can easily add some beetroot or rosehip powder to give it a pink to red shade. I used those cute eye shade containers that can be kept in your purse and take no space at all!

The 3 main ingredients are organic shea butter, beeswax and Castor oil. Shea butter will give thickness and moisturizing properties to your lip gloss. Shea Butter is an intense moisturizer for dry

144 • Organic Body Care

skin, and is a wonderful product for revitalizing dull or dry skin.

Castor oil is a vegetable oil obtained from the castor bean, not the animal! It is a natural emollient that penetrates the skin and helps stimulate the production of collagen, plus it will give a glossy appearance to your lips.

Castor oil can be taken internally and act as a natural laxative, something to keep in mind when you need it!

Using essential oil is always optional but peppermint oil will act as an antibacterial and will give a cooling or fresh tingle to your lips!

Since there is no water or liquid in this lip gloss, the shelve life is 6 months. Make sure to always use clean hands and making small batches is always a good idea.

For all the coco nuts out there, I’ve created this easy coconut oil lip balm recipe DIY, Step By Step recipe you can create right in your kitchen! Coconut oil is excellent as a skin moisturiser and softener. Beeswax is what will make your lip balm harden so don’t skip this ingredient… Add some peppermint essential oil for a “fresh like” sensation which is to say the least… ideal in the summer!

If you choose refined coconut oil, it will not have the lovely coconut scent, opt in for the virgin non refined coconut oil; always organic please!

5 drops of cinnamon leaf essential oil (do not use the bark cinnamon essential oil)

5 drops of sweet orange essential oil

Directions:

Melt beeswax, oils, and honey in a double boiler of very low heat. Once melted take it off the heat and start whipping with an electric mixer until the liquid becomes frosty and the honey well blended. (at first you will see the honey at the bottom of the oils, that means it is not well mixed).

Add essential oils and pour the mixture into lip balm container before it starts to solidify.

If it has already starting to solidify, don’t panic! Put it back into the double boiler for a few seconds until it melts again and poor the rest in the containers.

Words of wisdom: Cinnamon leaf essential oil must be use with caution. Please do not increase the percentage of drops in your lip balm or it might irritate your lips. Cinnamon essential oil can be a mucous membrane irritant and strong skin sensitizer. Only the oil from the leaf should be used, never use the bark essential oil. This is just a word of caution, I never had any problems with this lip balm which is one of my favorite!
