All Category Information

Group Projects Only one student will need to upload the pdf and enter the URL address. The system will automatically connect that information with other group members' submittal boxes.

All Projects

Due to the nature of the virtual contest, we are unable to coordinate virtual interviews, so projects will be judged on the information presented in the project and in the supporting paperwork (annotated bibliography/process paper).

We will test all URL links and PDFs and will contact you if there are problems with the files.

• Take photos of your exhibit.

o IMPORTANT NOTE: You may need to take photos of the exhibit before editing the final text. It is okay if the text you include in your template does not match what is shown in the photos. The judges will refer to the text you include in your template as your “final” version.

o You will need the following photos for your slide:

Performance Submission l Page 9

The Oregon Historical Society has decided that in acknowledgement of inequitable access to technol-ogy and to encourage social distancing the performance category will be judged by scripts only in-stead of video recordings of the performance. (The National History Day office has not yet determined if it will use scripts or another format for the national contest.)

• Prepare your Script. o Scripts are not normally part of the paper work that needs to be submitted for the OHD or NHD contests, so your script will not be evaluated for standard script formatting by the judges. For ease of reading and understanding, please include these 6 elements in your script: thesis, setting(s), time, character, costumes and props, and dialogue.

o Script Example: 1.Thesis 2. Setting - Oregon, during Executive Order 9066 (You may add additional settings per different scenes, if that helps your judges better visualize and understand your performance. For example, your first setting might be meeting Minoro in his home. Your second setting might be Minoro on the public street. Your third setting might be Minoro in jail.) 3. Time - 1939 4. Character - Minoro Y., resident and college student 5. Costumes and Props - Minori in casual dress common to the late 1930s, police costumes 6. Dialogue - “I don’t think this is fair!”

o Make sure your script contains references to the historical evidence from your research. o Using actual dialogue, quotations, or brief excerpts from speeches are good ways to put historical detail into your performance. oRemember that your script should center on the thesis statement, supporting statements, and the conclusion that you developed from your research

• Create one PDF that includes your title page, script (with setting, time, character, costumes and props, and dialogue), process paper, and annotated bibliography, in that order. You can only upload one PDF so it must include all of these components.

o If you are using a Word Document, click File at the top left corner, click Export, and click Create PDF/XPS. o If you are using Google Docs, click File at the top left corner, click Download, and choose the PDF Document (.pdf) option. • Name the file your first and last names (ex: IsaRuelas.pdf).

Judge Feedback & National Contest Selection

Revisions & Fees & Contact Information l Page 13

A team of judges will score students’ projects on the basis of the submitted project only. There will be no interviews. Students will receive their judge’s scores and comments virtually.

Students are encouraged to review judges’ suggestions from the state contest and consider them when revising their projects for the national contest. Feel free to look at the national website (nhd.org) webinars and google chats for additional guidance.

The top two highest scoring entries in each of the 18 categories may be eligible to participate in the National History Day contest on June 14-18, 2020, and those that are eligible to participate in the na-tional contest will be contacted by the Oregon History Day team. If one of the top two entries cannot participate in the national contest, the third highest scoring entry - if it met the eligibility criteria - will be invited to participate in the national contest.

Student & Teacher Fees

Oregon will work with the national office to virtually send students to the national contest. OHS will also offer up to $3,000 in financial aid to support students who request financial aid to cover the na-tional contest registration of $75 per student and $0 per teacher. The financial aid will be distributed on a first come first served basis.
