the lesson Jeremiah 1:4–9

Now the word of the Lord came to me saying, “Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, and before you were born I consecrated you; I appointed you a prophet to the nations.” Then I said, “Ah, Lord God! Truly I do not know how to speak, for I am only a boy.” But the Lord said to me, “Do not say, ‘I am only a boy’; for you shall go to all to whom I send you, and you shall speak whatever I command you, Do not be afraid of them, for I am with you to deliver you, says the Lord.” Then the Lord put out his hand and touched my mouth; and the Lord said to me, “Now I have put my words in your mouth.

Teach me, O Lord, the way of your statutesand I shall keep it to the end.Give me understanding, and I shall keep your law; I shall keep it with all my heart.

Make me go in the path of your commandments, For that is my desire.Incline my heart to your decrees and not to unjust gain.

Turn my eyes from watching what is worthless; give me life in your ways.Fulfill your promise to your servant, which you make to those who fear you.

Turn away the reproach which I dread, because your judgments are good.Behold, I long for your commandments; in your righteousness preserve my life.

Gospeller The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to John.People Glory to you, Lord Christ.

Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never be hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty. But I said to you that you have seen me and yet do not believe. Everything that the Father gives me will come to me, and anyone who comes to me I will never drive away; for I have come down from heaven, not to do my own will, but the will of him who sent me."

nicene creed Said by all.

We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified. He has spoken through the Prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

the examinationThe people are seated. The ordinands remain standing.

My sisters and brother, the Church is the family of God, the body of Christ, and the temple of the Holy Spirit. All baptized people are called to make Christ known as Savior and Lord, and to share in the renewing of his world. Now you are called to work as a pastor, priest, and teacher, together with your bishop and fellow presbyters, and to take your share in the councils of the Church.

As a priest, it will be your task to proclaim by word and deed the Gospel of Jesus Christ, and to fashion your life in accordance with its precepts. You are to love and serve the people among whom you work, caring alike for young and old, strong and weak, rich and poor. You are to preach, to declare God’s forgiveness to penitent sinners, to pronounce God’s blessing, to share in the administration of Holy Baptism and in the celebration of the mysteries of Christ’s Body and Blood, and to perform the other ministrations entrusted to you.

In all that you do, you are to nourish Christ’s people from the riches of his grace, and strengthen them to glorify God in this life and in the life to come. My sisters and brother, do you believe that you are truly called by God and his Church to this priesthood?Answer I believe I am so called.

Bishop Mariann Do you now in the presence of the Church commit yourself to this trust and responsibility?Answer I do.

Page 9: Ordination to the Sacred Order of Priestscathedral.org/wp-content/uploads/2016/05/HE20130727.pdf · Ordination to the Sacred Order of Priests july 27, 2013 ten o’clock in the morning

Bishop Mariann Will you respect and be guided by the pastoral direction and leadership of your bishop?Answer I will.

Bishop Mariann Will you be diligent in the reading and study of the Holy Scriptures, and in seeking the knowledge of such things as may make you a stronger and more able minister of Christ?

Answer I will.

Bishop Mariann Will you endeavor so to minister the Word of God and the sacraments of the New Covenant, that the reconciling love of Christ may be known and received?

Answer I will.

Bishop Mariann Will you undertake to be a faithful pastor to all whom you are called to serve, laboring together with them and with your fellow ministers to build up the family of God?

Answer I will.

Bishop Mariann Will you do your best to pattern your life and that of your family or household in accordance with the teachings of Christ, so that you may be a wholesome example to your people?

Answer I will.

Bishop Mariann Will you persevere in prayer, both in public and in private, asking God’s grace, both for yourself and for others, offering all your labors to God, through the mediation of Jesus Christ, and in the sanctification of the Holy Spirit?

Answer I will.

Bishop Mariann May the Lord who has given you the will to do these things give you the grace and power to perform them.

Answer Amen.

prayer of consecration

Creator of all, we praise you for your infinite love in calling us to be a holy people in the kingdom of your Son Jesus our Lord, who is the image of your eternal and invisible glory, the firstborn among many people, and the head of the Church. We thank you that by his death he has overcome death, and, having ascended into heaven, has poured his gifts abundantly upon your people, making some apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, some pastors and teachers, to equip the saints for the work of ministry and the building up of his body.

laying on of handsHere the bishop lays hands on each of the ordinands and prays.

Bishop Mariann Therefore, Gracious God, through Jesus Christ your Son, give your Holy Spirit to N.; fill him/her with grace and power, and make him/her a priest in your Church.

When all have been ordained and received, the bishop then continues

May Elizabeth, Kristen, Timothy, Rebecca, and Lisa exalt you, O Lord, in the midst of your people; offer spiritual sacrifices acceptable to you; boldly proclaim the gospel of salvation; and rightly administer the sacraments of the New Covenant. Make them faithful pastors, patient teachers, and wise councilors. Grant that in all things they may serve without reproach, so that your people may be strengthened and your Name glorified in all the world. All this we ask through Jesus Christ our Lord, who with you and the Holy Spirit lives and reigns, one God, for ever and ever.

People Amen.

vesting and presentation of biblesThe participating clergy return to their seats and the new priests are now vested according to the order of priests. The bishop then gives a Bible to the newly ordained.

Bishop Mariann Receive this Bible as a sign of the authority given you to preach the Word of God and to administer the holy Sacraments. Do not forget the trust committed to you as a priest of the Church of God.

offertory anthemDraw us in the Spirit's tether Harold Friedell (1905–1958)

Draw us in the Spirit's tether; for when humbly, in thy Name, two or three are met together, thou art in the midst of them. Alleluya! Alleluya! Touch we now thy garment's hem. As the brethren used to gather in the name of Christ to sup, then with thanks to God the Father break the bread and bless the cup, Alleluya! Alleluya! So knit thou our friendship up. All our meals and all our living make as sacraments of thee, that by caring, helping, giving, we may true disciples be. Alleluya! Alleluya! We will serve thee faithfully.

the great thanksgivingThe people remain standing throughout the Eucharistic Prayer.

Bishop Mariann The Lord be with you.People And also with you.

Bishop Mariann Lift up your hearts.People We lift them to the Lord.

Bishop Mariann Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.People It is right to give God thanks and praise.

Bishop Mariann God of all power, Ruler of the Universe, you are worthy of glory and praise.People Glory to you for ever and ever.

Bishop Mariann At your command all things came to be: the vast expanse of interstellar space, galaxies, suns, the planets in their courses, and this fragile earth, our island home.

People By your will they were created and have their being.

Bishop Mariann From the primal elements you brought forth the human race, and blessed us with memory, reason, and skill. You made us the rulers of creation. But we turned against you, and betrayed your trust; and we turned against one another.

People Have mercy, Lord, for we are sinners in your sight.

Bishop Mariann Again and again, you called us to return. Through prophets and sages you revealed your righteous Law. And in the fullness of time you sent your only Son, born of a woman, to fulfill your Law, to open for us the way of freedom and peace.

People By his blood, he reconciled us. By his wounds, we are healed.

Bishop Mariann And therefore we praise you, joining with the heavenly chorus, with prophets, apostles, and martyrs, and with all those in every generation who have looked to you in hope, to proclaim with them your glory, in their unending hymn:

sanctus and benedictus Sung by all.Holy, holy, holy A Community Mass

The presider gives thanks to God for the reconciling work of Christ’s passion and resurrection and prays over the bread and wine.

Bishop Mariann Remembering now his work of redemption, and offering to you this sacrifice of thanksgiving, People We celebrate his death and resurrection, as we await the day of his coming.

Bishop Mariann God of our Fathers and Mothers; God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob; God of Deborah, Miriam, and Mary Magdelene; God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ: Open our eyes to see your hand at work in the world about us. Deliver us from the presumption of coming to this Table for solace only, and not for strength; for pardon only, and not for renewal. Let the grace of this Holy Communion make us one body, one spirit in Christ, that we may worthily serve the world in his name.

People Risen Lord, be known to us in the breaking of the Bread.

Bishop Mariann Accept these prayers and praises, Holy God, through Jesus Christ our great High Priest, to whom, with you and the Holy Spirit, your Church gives honor, glory, and worship, from generation to generation.

All AMEN.

the lord’s prayer

Bishop Mariann As we join our prayers with those of the Church Universal, so we say, each in our own language, the prayer that Jesus Christ has taught us,

All Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.

ministration of communionAll who seek God and a deeper life in Christ are welcome to receive Holy Eucharist. To receive communion, come to a communion station at the direction of the ushers. Receive the bread in the palm of your hand. Eat the bread and then drink from the cup when it is offered to you, or, if you wish, you may hold the bread and dip it into the wine when the cup is offered to you. Gluten-free wafers are available; please make your need known to the minister. If you wish to receive a blessing rather than receive communion, please join in the movement to the communion station and cross your arms over your chest–this will alert the priest of your desire to be blessed.
