ORDER OF WORSHIP April 19, 2020 – 10:30 a.m. Second Sunday of Easter

Theme: Facing Your Goliaths As We Gather David and Goliath one of the most popular stories of the Old Testament. It’s a story of victory, faith, confidence. The story is a reminder to us of how we are to face our Goliaths. Prayer Before Worship Heavenly Father, this morning — and all of history — is about you. Please help me worship you with an undistracted heart. You know how my mind wanders to my upcoming week, present worries, and thoughts of others and other things. Help me put those thoughts away and focus on you and your glory. Would your Spirit cause my heart, soul, mind, and strength to exalt your Holy Name in my singing, listening to Your Word, and interacting with your people. In Jesus’ name. Amen. Prelude Rick Helderop, organist

Opening Hymn 201 Jesus Lives! The Victory’s Won 1. Jesus lives! The victory’s won! Death no longer can appal me; Jesus lives! Death’s reign is done! From the grave Christ will recall me. Brighter scenes will then commence; this shall be my confidence. 2. Jesus lives! To Him the throne high o’er heaven and earth is given. I shall go where He is gone, live and reign with Him in heaven. God is faithful. Doubtings, hence! This shall be my confidence.

3. Jesus lives! For me He died, hence will I, to Jesus living, Pure in heart and act abide, praise to Him and glory giving. Freely God doth aid dispense; this shall be my confidence. 4. Jesus lives! And now is death but the gate of life immortal; This shall calm my trembling breath when I pass its gloomy portal. Faith shall cry, as fails each sense, Jesus is my confidence! Order of Service P: In the name of the Father and of the + Son and of the Holy Spirit. C: Amen. Easter Proclamation P: Christ is Risen! Hallelujah! C: He is Risen Indeed! Hallelujah! P: Make haste, O God, to deliver me. C: Make haste to help me, O Lord. P: The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit. C: A broken and contrite heart, O God, thou wilt not despise. Glory be

to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Ghost; as it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

Children’s Message Old Testament Reading 1 Samuel 17:45-50

(David and Goliath) David said to the Philistine, “You come against me with sword and spear and javelin, but I come against you in the name of the LORD Almighty, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied. This day the LORD will deliver you into my hands, and I’ll strike you down and cut off your head. This very day I will give the carcasses of the Philistine army to the birds and the wild

animals, and the whole world will know that there is a God in Israel. All those gathered here will know that it is not by sword or spear that the LORD saves; for the battle is the LORD’s, and he will give all of you into our hands.” As the Philistine moved closer to attack him, David ran quickly toward the battle line to meet him. Reaching into his bag and taking out a stone, he slung it and struck the Philistine on the forehead. The stone sank into his forehead, and he fell facedown on the ground. So David triumphed over the Philistine with a sling and a stone; without a sword in his hand he struck down the Philistine and killed him. Epistle Reading Hebrews 11:32-38

(The Heroes of the Faith) And what more shall I say? I do not have time to tell about Gideon, Barak, Samson and Jephthah, about David and Samuel and the prophets, who through faith conquered kingdoms, administered justice, and gained what was promised; who shut the mouths of lions, quenched the fury of the flames, and escaped the edge of the sword; whose weakness was turned to strength; and who became powerful in battle and routed foreign armies. Women received back their dead, raised to life again. There were others who were tortured, refusing to be released so that they might gain an even better resurrection. Some faced jeers and flogging, and even chains and imprisonment. They were put to death by stoning; they were sawed in two; they were killed by the sword. They went about in sheepskins and goatskins, destitute, persecuted and mistreated — the world was not worthy of them. They wandered in deserts and mountains, living in caves and in holes in the ground. Response: Hallelujah, hallelujah, hallelujah! Gospel Announcement Response: Glory be to Thee, O Lord!

Gospel Reading John 20:24-29 (Doubting Thomas)

Now Thomas (also known as Didymus), one of the Twelve, was not with the disciples when Jesus came. So the other disciples told him, “We have seen the Lord!” But he said to them, “Unless I see the nail marks in his hands and put my finger where the nails were, and put my hand into his side, I will not believe.” A week later his disciples were in the house again, and Thomas was with them. Though the doors were locked, Jesus came and stood among them and said, “Peace be with you!” Then he said to Thomas, “Put your finger here; see my hands. Reach out your hand and put it into my side. Stop doubting and believe.” Thomas said to him, “My Lord and my God!” Then Jesus told him, “Because you have seen me, you have believed; blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.” Response: Praise be to Thee, O Christ. Confession of Faith The Apostles’ Creed I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth. And in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary; suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; he descended into hell; the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence He shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen. Sermon Hymn 210 The Strife is O’er, the Battle Done

1. Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! The strife is o’er, the battle done; Now is the Victor’s triumph won; Now be the song of praise begun. Alleluia!

Page 6: ORDER OF WORSHIP Second Sunday of Easter - Your ......ORDER OF WORSHIP April 19, 2020 – 10:30 a.m. Second Sunday of Easter Theme: Facing Your Goliaths As We Gather David and Goliath

2. Death’s mightiest pow’rs have done their worst, And Jesus hath His foes dispersed; Let shouts of praise and joy out-burst. Alleluia! 3. On the third morn He rose again Glorious in majesty to reign; Oh, let us swell the joyful strain! Alleluia. Sermon Text: 1 Samuel 17:45-50
