Holy Week & Eastertide Spring 2016

We hobbits are plain, quiet creatures. Adventures make one late for dinner.

Bilbo Baggins, The Hobbit

Being a Christian isn't ultimately about knowing that you're going to heaven when you die. Instead, being a Christian is about joining God in what he is doing in the world. This means placing ourselves in God's story and seeing where that adventure leads. It is a powerful invitation to step out of our comfortable lives and find ourselves immersed in the narrative God is writing.

Easter is a pivotal part of God's story. On the first Easter Sunday, nearly two thousand years ago, Jesus was raised from the dead. Beginning at that precise moment in time and space, God began to remake the world. But God doesn't intend to remake the world alone. He wants us to join him.

After the resurrection, Jesus appears to his disciples and comforts them. At the same time, though, he invites them to come join him on the mission that he has begun. This is what Jesus says to his disciples in John's gospel:

Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, even so I am sending you. John 20:21

So is the resurrection comforting? Yes it is. It means that our debt of sin has been paid in full. But it also means we have work to do. We have the great privilege of laboring with God to see his kingdom spread.

Let us worship!

Yours, O Lord, is the greatness, and the power, and the glory, and the majesty, and the splendor, and the kingdom.

Everything in heaven and earth is yours. You are exalted as head over all.

Please silence all mobile phones and electronic devices for the

duration of the worship service.

Text in bold is read together by the entire congregation. Plain

“Lectio Sacra” means “sacred reading.” It has been the practice of the church for thousands of years to have portions of the bible read during worship services. The assumption behind this practice is that we are people who need to be shaped by all of God’s word.

Musical interludes are included in our service in order to provide space for reflection and worship.

Confession of sin happens within the context of relationship, both with God and each other. We confess together, in community, before a gracious God who has given us himself. Confession both acknowledges our need for mercy and celebrates its abundance in Christ.

L E C T I O S A C R A Revelation 7:9-17 After this I looked, and behold, a great multitude that no one could number, from every nation, from all tribes and peoples and languages, standing before the throne and before the Lamb, clothed in white robes, with palm branches in their hands, and crying out with a loud voice, “Salvation belongs to our God who sits on the throne, and to the Lamb!” And all the angels were standing around the throne and around the elders and the four living creatures, and they fell on their faces before the throne and worshiped God, saying, “Amen! Blessing and glory and wisdom and thanksgiving and honor and power and might be to our God forever and ever! Amen.”

Then one of the elders addressed me, saying, “Who are these, clothed in white robes, and from where have they come?” I said to him, “Sir, you know.” And he said to me, “These are the ones coming out of the great tribulation. They have washed their robes and made them white in the blood of the Lamb.

“Therefore they are before the throne of God, and serve him day and night in his temple; and he who sits on the throne will shelter them with his presence. They shall hunger no more, neither thirst anymore; the sun shall not strike them, nor any scorching heat. For the Lamb in the midst of the throne will be their shepherd, and he will guide them to springs of living water, and God will wipe away every tear from their eyes.”

The word of the Lord! Thanks be to God!

Almighty and most merciful Father; We have strayed from your ways like lost sheep. We have followed too much the desires and schemes of our own hearts. We have offended against your good commandments. We have left undone those things which we ought to have done; And we have done those things which we ought not to have done.

O, Lord, have mercy upon us. Forgive us of our sins, for Jesus’ sake. And grant, Father, that from this day forward, We may live godly, righteous, and sober lives, to the glory of your holy Name. Amen.

(You are invited to confess your sins silently)

P R A Y I N G T H E P S A L M S Psalm 23

The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want. He makes me lie down in green pastures. He leads me beside still waters. He restores my soul. He leads me in paths of righteousness for his name's sake. Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me. You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; you anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life, and I shall dwell in the house of the LORD forever.

Praying through the Psalms each week teaches us how to pray, using the prayer book of ancient Israel. As we pray, there will be pauses for reflection.

Prayer for Those Searching for the Truth

Jesus, you claim to be the way, the truth, and the life. Grant that

I might be undaunted by the cost of following you as I

consider the reasons for doing so. If what you claim is true,

please guide me, teach me, and open to me the reality of who

you are. Give me an understanding of you that is

coherent, convincing, and that leads to the life that you

promise. Amen.

Let us pray to God, asking for new life, because he has raised us from the dead with Christ and filled us with Christ's new life.

Father in heaven, help us love your ways. May we trust that following you is best for us, even when we must deny ourselves. (Please pray silently for our struggle to honor God.) Lord in your mercy, hear our prayer.

Help us love our family and friends. Provide opportunities for reconciliation where needed, and may we not take for granted those who are close. (Please pray silently for wholeness in our relationships.) Lord in your mercy, hear our prayer.

Help us love our enemies. May we seek to live peaceably with all people. (Please pray silently for peace.) Lord in your mercy, hear our prayer.

Help us love our city. May we care for the poor, oppressed, and lonely. (Please pray silently that we would be a blessing to our city.) Lord in your mercy, hear our prayer.

Standing

Let us pray together, as our Savior taught us:

Our Father, who art in heaven,       hallowed be thy name. Thy Kingdom come, thy will be done,       on earth as it is in Heaven.  Give us this day our daily bread,       and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.  And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen.

6

Prayer of Belief Lord Jesus, I admit that I am weaker and more sinful than I ever before believed, but through you I am more loved and accepted than I ever dared hope. I thank you for paying my debt, bearing my punishment on the cross, and offering forgiveness and new life. Knowing that you have been raised from the dead, I turn from my sins and receive you as Savior and Lord. Amen.

Prayer for Those Struggling with Sin Lord Jesus, grant that I may see in you the fulfillment of all my need and may turn from every false satisfaction to feed on you, the true and living bread. Enable me to lay aside the sin that clings so closely, and run with perseverance the race set before me, looking to you, the author and perfecter of my faith. Amen.

Communion, also called the Lord’s Supper or the Eucharist, is the family meal of Christians. We invite all baptized followers of Jesus Christ who acknowledge their sins against God and their neighbors and confess their need for the grace of Christ to partake of this meal. If you are a Christian and haven’t been baptized, please talk with one of our pastors. We would be honored to baptize you. We hope that this time is helpful to you as you consider your relationship with Jesus Christ and with his people, the church.7

Allergen-free communion elements (wafer ingredients:

organic brown rice flour, organic white rice flour) are available at

the center of the communion table. To partake, please dip in the wine cup on the table, then

proceed through the line.

Prayer for Receiving Communion

Lord Jesus, your perfect life, death, and resurrection are the source of all blessing in this life

and the life to come. As I eat this bread and drink this cup, renew

me in the joy and glory of knowing and serving you. I

come to this table on the basis of your merit only and not my own. As you have completely and fully offered yourself for

me, I now completely and fully offer myself to you as a living

sacrifice. Amen.

Community groups are places of care and community where we learn more about living the Christian life together. Each group is unique and has its own "personality," and yet all groups are focused on growing in relationship with God and with each other. Groups meet on different nights in various neighborhoods around the city, and include time for fellowship, study and reflection, and prayer together. Contact: Debbie Smith [email protected]

John 10:22-30

[22] At that time the Feast of Dedication took place at Jerusalem. It was winter, [23] and Jesus was walking in the temple, in the colonnade of Solomon. [24] So the Jews gathered around him and said to him, “How long will you keep us in suspense? If you are the Christ, tell us plainly.” [25] Jesus answered them, “I told you, and you do not believe. The works that I do in my Father's name bear witness about me, [26] but you do not believe because you are not among my sheep. [27] My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me. [28] I give them eternal life, and they will never perish, and no one will snatch them out of my hand. [29] My Father, who has given them to me, is greater than all, and no one is able to snatch them out of the Father's hand. [30] I and the Father are one.”

Acts 9:36-43

[36] Now there was in Joppa a disciple named Tabitha, which, translated, means Dorcas. She was full of good works and acts of charity. [37] In those days she became ill and died, and when they had washed her, they laid her in an upper room. [38] Since Lydda was near Joppa, the disciples, hearing that Peter was there, sent two men to him, urging him, “Please come to us without delay.” [39] So Peter rose and went with them. And when he arrived, they took him to the upper room. All the widows stood beside him weeping and showing tunics and other garments that Dorcas made while she was with them. [40] But Peter put them all outside, and knelt down and prayed; and turning to the body he said, “Tabitha, arise.” And she opened her eyes, and when she saw Peter she sat up. [41] And he gave her his hand and raised her up. Then calling the saints and widows, he presented her alive. [42] And it became known throughout all Joppa, and many believed in the Lord. [43] And he stayed in Joppa for many days with one Simon, a tanner.

Revelation 7:9-17

[9] After this I looked, and behold, a great multitude that no one could number, from every nation, from all tribes and peoples and languages, standing before the throne and before the Lamb, clothed in white robes, with palm branches in their hands, [10] and crying out with a loud voice, “Salvation belongs to our God who sits on the throne, and to the Lamb!” [11] And all the angels were standing around the throne and around the elders and the four living creatures, and they fell on their faces before the throne and worshiped God, [12] saying, “Amen! Blessing and glory and wisdom and thanksgiving and honor and power and might be to our God forever and ever! Amen.”

[13] Then one of the elders addressed me, saying, “Who are these, clothed in white robes, and from where have they come?” [14] I said to him, “Sir, you know.” And he said to me, “These are the ones coming out of the great tribulation. They have washed their robes and made them white in the blood of the Lamb.

[15] “Therefore they are before the throne of God, and serve him day and night in his temple; and he who sits on the throne will shelter them with his presence. [16] They shall hunger no more, neither thirst anymore; the sun shall not strike them, nor any scorching heat. [17] For the Lamb in the midst of the throne will be their shepherd, and he will guide them to springs of living water, and God will wipe away every tear from their eyes.”
