PENSAMIENTOS DE NUESTRO PARROCO PASTORS PONDERINGS

Dear Parishioners, The Readings today remind us of both the Cost (and actually the Benefits) of Discipleship. The future Apostles James and John, the sons of an apparently fairly prominent Galilean man named Zebedee, come over to Jesus and ask if “when he comes into glory” they could on his right and his left. It was a rather arrogant though probably more igno-rant request: they wanted to be seen as important. Jesus makes them see quickly that this honor is neither his to give but also misguided. The way of God isn’t about titles, or getting good seats at important tables. The way of God is truly about being able to live in peace, and above all peace with (and within) oneself. Whenever I think of this question, I think of St. Thomas Moore, one time Chancellor of England un-der Henry VIII and who ultimately was beheaded by him. In the play “A Man for All Seasons” about his life, the future saint asks Henry VIII, why he so desperately wanted his approval in his divorce with the queen and hence in his break with the Pope in Rome. The future saint reminded him, “You have all the nobles, you have the parliament, you even have most of the bish-ops, why do you need me?” And the King replied, “Because you are honest.” This comes from a play about his life, but it rings true from his life. In the Office Readings for his Feast Day, we are invited to read from a letter that the future St. Thomas Moore wrote to his daughter while he was in prison. In his letter he offers no recriminations, he doesn’t call the King bad names. He simply says that he’s _thankful_ actually that he’s in prison because he’s now given more time pray. His was an example of a man whose conscience was clean, who had nothing to hide, who had, as St. Paul would say, “run his race” and was simply waiting now for his Encounter with God. We can live with such peace as well. Fr. Dennis

Sunday, October 17, 2021 On this day, families and catechists are formally commissioned for ministry to the community. Catechetical Sunday is a won-derful opportunity to reflect on the role that each baptized per-son plays in handing on the faith and being a witness to the Gospel. Catechetical Sunday is an opportunity for all to rededi-cate themselves to this mission as a community of faith. Join us at the 10:30 am Mass and 12:30 noon Mass for the blessing of our Catechists. (You may choose one mass to attend with your family) Prayer for Catechists and families Loving Father, we pray today for our catechists and families. We thank you for their gift of ministry in your Church. Grant them your wisdom that they may grow in the understanding and teaching of your Word. Grant them also your love that they may be fruitful heralds of your Word and lead others to love you. Pour forth your Holy Spirit upon them to grant them wisdom about what is important; knowledge of the truths of faith; understanding of their meaning; right judgement about how to apply them in life; courage to persevere even in the face of adversity; reverence before all that is sacred and holy; and that loving zeal which leads others to a transforming encounter with your Son. We pray this through Christ, our Lord. Amen Copyright © 2021, United States Conference of Catho-lic Bishops, Washington, DC.

Amén Copyright © 2021, United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, Washington, DC. Se reservan todos los derechos. FIESTA DE FE

THE HUMANITY OF JESUS CHRIST

FEAST OF FAITH

AN ACT OF SPIRITUAL COMMUNION My Jesus, I believe that You are present in the Most Holy Sacrament. I love You above all things, and I desire to receive You into my soul. Since I cannot at this moment receive You sacramentally, come at least spiritually into my heart. I embrace You as if You were already there and unite myself wholly to You. Never permit me to be separated from You. Amen.

All three readings today support—each in its own way, of course—a reflection on the humanity of Jesus Christ and how that humanity played a key role in the drama of our salvation. Although not chosen specifically to coor-dinate with the other two readings, today’s second read-ing does in fact carry forward the theme of Christ’s hu-manity in a remarkable way. The author of the Letter to the Hebrews highlights the solidarity that exists between Jesus and us, precisely because in his human nature Je-sus has known the same sufferings and testing that are our own experience. Because he can “sympathize with our weaknesses,” we can “approach the throne of grace to receive mercy.” For the author of Hebrews, the hu-manity of Jesus was an essential requirement for his re-demptive death, as well as an invitation to us to find in Jesus someone with whom we can identify in our daily struggles. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

Only Say the Word The bread is broken, the banquet is prepared, and now we are invited to the feast. Once more the priest holds the host, now broken, for us to see, and invites us to behold the one “who takes away the sins of the world.” Truly blessed and happy are those invited to this meal, which is a foretaste of the heavenly banquet, the supper of the Lamb (Revelation 19:19). We respond to this invitation with a prayer to the Lord: we acknowledge that we are not worthy, but at the same time we are confident that the One who comes to us can heal us, body and soul. This prayer echoes the story of the centurion in Luke’s Gospel. The centurion, a Gentile, asks healing for his servant, but does not consider himself worthy to have Jesus come under his roof—he believes that Jesus can heal his servant with a word, without even seeing him. Jesus is amazed at his faith. It is the same for us. We believe that Jesus speaks to us, comes to us, dwells with us, even though we neither hear his voice nor see his face. —Corinna Laughlin, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

—Miguel Arias, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.
