COMMUNITY SERVICE - 1967-68

Most of the Community Service projects of the school have beenapproached through the nine houses. Since welfare work of Singaporeis well covered by various organisations, the most effective way inwhich we could help was by each house adopting a charity. Over thepast year house commitments have been:-

Belvoir: Darul Ihsan Boys Warwick: Singapore AssociationHouse for Retarded Children

Chester: Children’s Aid Society Deal: Canossa Convent

Hastings: Salvation Army Dover: Ramakrishna Boys’Children’s Home Home

Pevensey: Association for theBlind

Richborough: School for the Deaf

Rochester: Convent of the HolyInfant Jesus

Each House set up a Community Service Committee. TheseCommittees visited their organisations and discovered how they couldbest be of service. Children from the Homes and Schools involvedhave been entertained at St. John’s, dances and concerts have beenarranged to raise money and pupils have assisted at the fund raisingfunctions of their charity. The boarding houses have made regularweek-end visits-the girls to their convents and the boys to PerakHouse. Warwick and Pevensey have paid weekly visits in school timeto their schools. These regular visits have proved most useful to ourpupils and the children they have been helping.

In addition to the House Community Service the school has alsobeen involved in a number of activities; a house has been painted inco-operation with Singapore West Rotary Club in order that theSingapore Society for Retarded Children could use it as a school-abouta hundred children and staff gave up a week-end to achieve this; clothesand food have been collected for civilian victims of the war in Vietnam;the Hans Anderson Club have been helped with their Christmas partiesand $500 was raised to help Gurkha Schools in Nepal.
