WELCOME ET BIENVENUE TO ORCUPBEQ 2010.It’s been a wild ride to put this shindig together in under four weeks and I wouldn’t have traded the stress lines and sleepless nights for anything because of the great lineup we’ve managed to put together for you this weekend.

I feel like we’ve covered all our bases in offering you a multidimensional experience. We have representatives from the old guard – the warriors of print – to the next generation

of journalists practicing online exclusivity. And between these points we have members of the broadcast industry – television and radio.

These conferences used to be a meeting of the press; editors would meet up and talk about production cycles, thumbnails and paper stock. Then a few years ago the landscape changed and we brought in social media experts who warned people about falling behind in the latest digital trends and that CUP papers had to follow suit of the mainstream media and develop their online identities and brands.

Tweet it. Facebook it. Post it. Link it. Share it. We don’t just report on the news any more, we are gatherers and distributors. We’re not necessarily composing all the material, but we’re try-ing our damndest to make sure we’re the ones that show it to people. Wilfrid Laurier University Student Publications is a unique entity in student media. We have two newspapers in two very different cities that cater to the needs of two very different demographics.

We have a radio station that has in less than a year managed to create quality programming, a dynamic culture and a dedicated volunteer base. This brings me to our theme of synergy.

When student papers first started getting websites, most of them had a “web editor” whose job primarily was to come in the afternoon on print day and plug print articles into a content management system.

Now both our newspapers have editors who know the print and web production systems and both are producing exclusive online content and media.

I admire all of our speakers and presenters who have been so kind as to grace us with their time and presence this weekend and I hope that you all are inspired in some way, hopefully to take new knowledge and ideas back to your respective newsrooms and colleagues.

Finally, I’d like to thank all the people that helped make this conference possible. Including: the very talented Morgan Alan for the stunning design of this programme, Cord editor-in-chief Alanna Wallace, Sputnik editor-in-chief Scott Blacklock, Seamus Townsend for the design of the rather swanky “synergy” logo, our friends over at the Imprint for their sponsorship and support, Angela Foster for keeping me sane and on track, all WLUSP staff and volunteers who made a contribution, and most importantly our President and CEO Bryn Ossington for inspiring the theme and splitting the workload 50/50.

Now, let’s get synergized.
