Artistic Director’s Note:

Welcome and thank you for joining Orchesis I Dance Company this evening in a unique Barjché production experience.

No doubt in 1944, when three Iowa State University students, Barbara, Jean and Charlotte, combined their names for the first ISU modern dance concert, Barjche’, (pronounced bar-shay), would they have ever imagined a dance performance in this way.

Probably, most of us couldn’t have either before March of 2020. Yet, here we are connecting, dancing and creating art and sharing in our humanity.

Since its origin 77 years ago, Barjché has become an annual modern dance performance produced by the Orchesis I Dance Company and ISU Dance Program. The theme for Barjché 2021 celebrates reunions and coming together and our connectivity. Each choreographer has been inspired by connectivity in some way to approach creating their dance.

While the dance making process and presentation had to change and adapt with the pandemic this year, the need to connect and come together on meaningful levels has not. Despite the layers of barriers, masks, screens and sometimes miles, these young dance artists came together to continue dancing and sharing a part of them-selves that connects them to their peers, humanity and you the audience.

“The world is so empty if one thinks only of mountains, rivers & cities; but to know someone who thinks & feels with us, & who, though distant, is close to us in spirit, this makes the earth for us an inhabited garden.” - Goethe

Please sit back and enjoy the show. We look forward to seeing you all in the theater again soon. Thank you for supporting the arts. Your support is needed more than ever right now!
