What is BYOD?
• BYOD is an acronym for Bring Your Own Device.
• BYOD is a program that allows students to bring a personally owned device to school to use as a part of the learning process.
• For this program a device is any personally owned laptop or tablet that meets district specifications or any similar district owned device.

• Our students are digital natives and live in a world where information creation and consumption is constantly occurring.
• Using technology can promote greater classroom participation.
• Incorporating student technology can spark greater interest in classroom activities and increase student motivation to succeed.

• Students engage in “blended learning” in high priority subjects:
– English Language Arts,

– and Social Studies.
• Students use BYOD devices to support learning daily in whole group, small group, and individual instruction.

• Student may take classroom and district assessments on their device, however state standardized assessments will be taken on district-owned devices.

How can my student access their work at home?

Which devices are allowed? • The proposed OCPS policy states, “In order for the device
to be used for supplemental learning purposes, it must be able to access the Internet wirelessly through a modern browser and contain a note- taking function/ application.”
• Parents are provided with a BYOD matrix, which outlines minimum specifications for devices on major platforms.
• Smart phones are not currently approved as a BYOD and previous cell phone policies remain unedited.

How will students access the internet at school?
• Students can only access Wi-Fi after they have registered for BYOD.
• Students will access the internet over Wi-Fi by connecting to the “OCPS” SSID.
• Upon connecting a device for the first time, students will need to enter their student number and birthdate to authenticate.

Is the internet filtered at school?
• All internet access from the OCPS network is filtered in compliance with the Child Internet Protection Act (CIPA).
• Filtering is done on the network, not the device.
• Internet access is logged based on the device user.

How will students access the internet outside of school?
• Internet access is not required for homework at this time.
• Map of free community Wi-Fi available on our website.
• Home internet access for $9.95 per month is available through most cable providers for eligible families with a child participating in the free or reduced lunch program.

Will the internet be filtered at home?
• Internet filtering from home is not currently provided by OCPS.
• Use of other filtering technology may be used on parental provided devices.
• OCPS cannot endorse any filtering software.

What are the responsibilities of the student?
• Read, sign and adhere to the OCPS Acceptable Use Policy and Student Code of Conduct.
• Access the internet through the OCPS network only.
– Access of the internet through cellular data plans such as 3G/4G networks is prohibited.
– OCPS is not responsible for any data or app charges that a student may incur from a service provider.

Will charging devices be available?
• Student should plan to charge their devices over night.
• Limited outlets are available at school for emergency use with a student provided charger.
• Battery life is an important consideration when purchasing a student device.

What are the social media guidelines for students?
• Edmodo is the only social media site approved for elementary school use.
• Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, etc. are prohibited for use on campus.
• Consequences for inappropriate use of the internet are outlined in the OCPS Student Code of Conduct.
• An updated list of approved social media sites can be found on the BYOD website.

– The definition of external electronic, digital or telecommunications devices

• A BYOD is classified as any device that has the following functions:
– access the Internet
– access digital media
– electronically send, receive, or capture text, audio, or images and/or electronically transmit text, audio, or images

• Students can use the device for the purposes of supplementary learning at the direction of the teacher.
• The district is not responsible for texting and/or data usage fees.
• Technology Support Representatives will provide limited technical assistance.

Searching Devices
• The student and parents’ consent to the search in accordance with the limitations imposed by state and federal law.
• A search of the device will only occur when school officials have a reasonable suspicion that such a search will reveal a violation of school board policy or the OCPS Student Code of Conduct.

Violating Policy
• Students who violate this policy will be subject to disciplinary action.
• In addition, an administrator may confiscate or, with reasonable cause, search the device, which shall only be returned to the student’s parent/guardian.
• Content or images that violate criminal laws will be forwarded to law enforcement.

• Students are responsible for devices they bring to school.
• The District shall not be responsible for loss, theft, or destruction of devices brought onto school property, including financial cost of replacing device.

What are my responsibilities as a parent?
• Carefully read the BYOD registration form and indicate agreement.
• Explain the BYOD policies to your child.
• Register your child’s device.
• Check the device daily to make sure it is in working order and fully charged.
• Monitor your child’s daily use of the internet carefully.

Can I purchase insurance for my child’s device?
• Best Buy and other electronic retailers (Tiger Direct, Office Max, etc.) offer protection plans on electronic devices, whether purchased from that retailer or not.
– Protection plan prices varies based on the extent of protection the device owner would want
• Worth Insurance also offers protection plans to K-12 students and their parents.

What if my child doesn’t bring a device to school?
• Not every child may have their own device.
• Parents are not required to purchase a device.
• The district will provide access to the internet through classroom desktop computers and/or a limited number of laptop or tablet computers through a generous partnership with your school’s foundation.
• District-owned devices will stay at school.

• Fuel My School- gives a % back to your school with every BYOD purchase
• Local Cable Provider- Families eligible for free or reduced lunch may be eligible for a computer for as low as $150
