RON BENTLEY Information Services Ron excels at helping departments find technologies that meet processing, workflow, communication and data management needs. Whenever possible, Ron uses WakeMed resources to build custom solutions, which saves money and ensures that department- specific requirements are met. In 2013, Ron was instrumental in upgrading all WakeMed department sites to Sharepoint 2010, saving us a costly license renewal fee. PAULA COLE Strategic Sourcing Paula is lauded for her outstanding cost control and inventory management skills. She has been a leader in the electrophysiology lab’s reprocessing initiative, which saved WakeMed more than $900,000 over three years. She also is an excellent vendor negotiator who excels at managing inventory costs. Paula, whose colleagues say she is never too busy to help others, is also a recipient in the Unsurpassed Service category. DEBORAH PULIAFICO Pathology Labs – Garner Healthplex As supervisor, Deborah has implemented numerous proactive, creative processes to improve lab services, leading to significant savings and efficiencies. She also oversees the laboratory operation of the WakeWell Rewards biometric screenings. With her help, WakeMed can offer this benefit to employees at a fraction of the cost of hiring a third party. Deborah also is a recipient in the Unsurpassed Service category. KAREN TSANG, RN 4E Pediatrics When budget cuts reduced funding for inpatient diabetes education, Karen took the initiative to develop a diabetes education program aimed at reducing readmissions and ED visits. Karen teamed up with endocrinologists to create educational tools and trained nurses to use them with patients and families. Building on that success, she is now developing an asthma education program. She also a recipient in the Quality Outcomes category. These employees stay current on WakeMed’s plans for growth; present WakeMed in a positive manner throughout the community and beyond; and demonstrate support of our organization and mission. DEREK BAILEY Mobile Critical Care Services Derek serves as a mentor on his team, teaching new employees and sharing new research with seasoned colleagues. He also represents WakeMed in our community – and beyond. To reduce the incidence of sudden cardiac death, he developed “SportFit Heart,” a program that makes EKGs available to young athletes. He also represented WakeMed in Seattle, where he took part in the 2012 CAE Cup competition. VALERIE BARLOW, PharmD Pharmacy A true ambassador for WakeMed, Valerie serves on many local and state boards overseeing and improving pharmacy issues. She was instrumental in adding faculty positions at WakeMed by partnering with UNC at Chapel Hill and Campbell University. One of her flagship initiatives – the Outpatient Pharmacy Discharge Program – has improved patient education related to medications. As director, her positive attitude brightens the workplace and inspires colleagues. SUSIE MATHES DAVIS Corporate & Community Health Known for always going the extra mile to represent WakeMed, Susie has built many relationships with business and community partners. She secured 40 new corporate clients in the past two years and organizes dozens of corporate screenings and events annually, promoting WakeMed physicians and services at each one. Susie also serves as a role model by mentoring student interns from several colleges. ORAL WISE Ambulatory Services The Garner Healthplex quickly became an important part of the Garner community, thanks in part to Oral’s tireless and enthusiastic efforts. As director of Ambulatory Services, Oral represents WakeMed positively and professionally. To promote and improve services, he meets regularly with physicians, urgent care centers and other community partners. These employees fully embrace WakeMed’s policies and culture of safety, produce quality work in an efficient manner, communicate clearly and participate in process improvement initiatives. GERARD BRUNNER Pathology Labs – Cary Hospital Gerard is always looking for ways to improve efficiency and make a positive impact on patient care and safety. This year, he helped implement two processes that made blood products available to patients faster without compromising safety. Now used at both hospitals, these processes not only standardized procedures, they made patient care more efficient by eliminating delays. JANE DAVIS WPP – Obstetrics & Gynecology Jane’s colleagues say she is a strong leader who is very proactive in sharing information with staff. If Jane recognizes a practice that needs improving, she works tirelessly to resolve the issue, putting processes in place to prevent recurrences in the future. As practice manager, she facilitates a positive work environment by encouraging her team to offer suggestions to improve best practices. CECILY FLYNN Pathology Labs – Cary Hospital As supervisor, Cecily uses creative and encouraging ways to motivate staff to keep turnaround times low. Thanks to her work developing and implementing the rapid serum tube, Troponin turnaround time has improved from 40 minutes to 28 minutes. Cecily leads by example and always makes safety the priority. She tracks and shares data with other departments and committees, leading to better quality outcomes. Through her work withthe NICU pharmacycommittee, Nancy saw anopportunity to improveconsistency in NICUmedicationadministration practices.To address it, she

developed a standardized process,educated staff on best practices andprovided support to nurses.Throughout the process, she madepatients the priority and workedclosely with the medical team toensure that workflow was notinterrupted.

CAROLYN HAYES ★

Physical TherapyEarly mobility for ICUpatients can reducecomplications likepneumonia and skinproblems. As a clinicalspecialist, Carolyn hasbeen a strong advocate forearly mobility for patients

in critical care units. She hasdeveloped and conducted in-serviceprograms to address safe patient careprocesses, and can be counted on tobrainstorm solutions to difficultproblems. Carolyn is also recognized inthe Workforce Excellence category.

JAMES HINES, RNMobile Critical Care Services

During his long-termservice with MCCS,James has helpedimplement numeroussafety guidelines thathave improved patientoutcomes. Thanks to hisdiligent efforts promoting

the use of 12-leads, this practice is nowused in over 90 percent of chest painpatients, leading to improvedrecognition of STEMIs. James alsoprecepts new employees, teaching newcaregivers to make patient well-beingtheir top priority.

IVY KENNEDYPatient Case Management

Ivy provides criticalpsychosocial support tohigh-risk ED patients tohelp them access neededservices. She has helpedmany patients findappropriate medicalhomes, providing them

the consistent care they need andensuring that ED resources are usedefficiently. Ivy is also an advocate forabuse victims, offering ongoingeducation about safe reportingpractices to benefit the children in ourcommunity.

LAURIMAY LAROCO, PharmDPharmacy

As a supervisor who isalways searching forways to improve patientcare, Laurimay saw thathaving pharmacistsinvolved in Code Strokeand Code Trauma teamswould be a big help.

After collaborating with ED staff,Laurimay trained other pharmacists onhow to work with these patients mosteffectively. Having pharmacists in thetrauma room to quickly providetreatment has helped improve strokeoutcomes.

MARRILYN MCGUIRE, NPWPB - OB/Gyn

A nurse practitioner,Marrilyn puts patientsafety at the center of herwork every day. Sheanalyzes each case,collaborating with staffand physicians atWakeMed and other

facilities to get a complete clinicalpicture of each patient. Her coworkerssay she is an excellent resource oncomplicated cases and is always readyto explain the reasons for clinicaltreatments and orders.

RENEE PATTON, RN5B Neuro Intermediate Care

As co-chair of the system-wide Falls Committee,Renee plays an importantrole in developing andimplementing tools thatprotect patients frompotentially dangerousfalls. The TABS monitor,

the falls tracking tool, the fallsprevention toolkit and the yellow ‘falls’ribbon are just a few projects she hasbeen involved with. Her work hashelped improve results in thisimportant patient safety measure.

KRISTEN RHOADES, RNPatient Case Management

Kristen’s coworkers sayshe has a magic touchwith managing workflowand processimprovement, solvingissues while supportingteam members in a waythat seems effortless.

When issues are identified, sheprovides immediate assistance anddevelops strategies for longer-termimprovement. She pays attention to hercolleagues’ needs and provides time offfor relaxation and wellness.

MARY ELLA TEETERPharmacy – Cary Hospital

Mary Ella works closelywith physicians andnurses to ensure thatdischarge medicationsare accurate and thatpatients understand theirmedications. Mary Ella isconsidered an invaluable

resource during interdisciplinaryrounds because she goes above andbeyond to address concernsimmediately. Patients are her toppriority, and she works tirelessly toensure they all receive the “goldstandard” of care.

These employees demonstrateimpressive patient and customerservice, respond and communicate ina timely, effective manner and go outof their way to be of assistance toothers.

CONSTANCE ALSTONWPP – Primary Care

During a time of staffshortages, Constanceleaped into action tokeep things runningsmoothly by rotating staffand scheduling coveragewhile replacements werehired and trained.

Meanwhile, she ordered supplies andsupported physicians in another office,all while serving on severalcommittees. By taking on theseadditional responsibilities, this clinicalsupervisor helped several practicescontinue operating effectively.

STEPHANIE BOONECase Management – Cary Hospital

As a case manager,Stephanie advocates forpatients and works hardto meet their needs. Shealways puts her patientsfirst, and familiesappreciate how she goesthe extra mile to

accommodate requests. In one case, shewas able to arrange for hospice care thatallowed a patient to spend his finaldays with his bed-bound wife, whichbrought peace to the entire family.

Capturing, reporting andanalyzing data helpsWakeMed provide evenbetter service to patients.Brooke used her skills asa business analyst andexpertise with financialcomputer programs to

help create a reporting system that iscurrent and relevant. She provideshigh levels of customer service andalso serves the community as avolunteer coach, foster dog caregiverand Meals on Wheels delivery driver.

Joanna’s dedicationsurpasses expectations,and her expertise inwound/ostomymanagement makes her avalued role model andresource for colleagues. Ifcoming in on

HELEN COX, RN3C Rehab NursingNo issue or complaint is too big or

small for Helen, whotackles them withcreative solutions andoutstanding customerservice. She regularlyvisits patients to resolveproblems and works withstaff to make

improvements. As a charge nurse, shespreads enthusiasm by planningrecognition parties and finding creativeways to boost morale and motivate staff.

Jerry doesn’t letobstacles stand in theway of improvingservice. Jerry, who holdshimself to high customerservice standards,became the firstPathology employee to

be cross-trained on different duties,making him more flexible andeffective at his job. When he realizedthat staff could benefit from greaterphlebotomy training, he developed aclass that helped improve specimencollection in many departments.

JON PENNYOutpatient Rehab

Jon works hard toimprove processes bybringing groups togetherto find solutions. In oneinstance, he gathereddepartments to create anew cleaning processfor whirlpools,

coordinated training and ensured thateach location understood theexpectations. Drawing on hisbackground as a police officer, Jonoffered a personal safety class forrehab staff and is working to share itwith all employees.

Adrianne uses hercreativity to improveteamwork, training andeducation. Shewelcomes suggestionsand takes the initiativeto get new programsunderway. Adrianne

Cindy has been acatalyst in developingand promoting theGuide to ProfessionalSuccess (GPS)mentoring program fornurses. Thanks to herenthusiasm and

determination, GPS now helpsWakeMed nurses grow professionallyand personally. Cindy coordinatesand teaches classes, and identifiesand educates mentors for each unit.Her dynamic leadership helped getthis important program started and offthe ground.

KIM SMITHWPP – Carolina Cardiology In a busy office setting, Kim standsout for her kind and caring attitude.She is always willing to help trainnew employees, and her professionaland friendly demeanor exemplifiesthe Wake Way. technologists fromother labs and revisingthe nursing orientationresource booklet. Shehas helped smooth labtesting processes for theChildren’s ED and willgladly walk visitors

across campus to find their car. Shealways puts the needs of others beforeher own to provide the best possibleservice.

HELEN WILLIAMSOutpatient RehabHelen provides exceptional care tochildren with speech or languageproblems. Even when her young

patients get frustrated,her cheery attitude andcompassion make thevisit a positiveexperience. Her expertknowledge benefits notjust patients and theirfamilies but also her

team members. She is bilingual andhas taught her coworkers some basicSpanish skills to help foster betterrelationships with patients.
