Oracle Storage Solutions for Data Protection and Business Continuity
1
Introduction
Data is the core asset of any organization. Loss of data due to lack of preparedness for equipment failure, human error, or natural disaster can adversely affect operational continuity. An organization must have solutions that are able to recover lost data during a specific timeframe and to a particular point in time that matches the economic value of the data.
This white paper explains how Oracle’s end-to-end solutions provide flexible and cost effective ways to meet data protection challenges, particularly in Oracle software environments. It provides an overview of how Sun ZFS Storage Appliance solutions and StorageTek Tape Library solutions help meet data protection goals. The paper also includes references to additional resources for exploring more details.

Data Protection Goals and Challenges
A well designed data protection plan ensures business continuity regardless of how or at what level data is lost. A data protection plan and the solutions deployed to implement it should strive to:
Reduce exposure – Reduce exposure to data loss and business process interruption.
Be flexible – Be flexible to meet a variety of Service Level Agreements (SLAs) based on the application or applications that use the storage and the speed with which recovery is required by the business.
Reduce costs – Reduce the Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) of the data protection solution.
Be easy to manage – Offer easier and less expensive ways to deploy and perform day-to-day management tasks.
Balance Challenging SLAs and Costs
In planning data protection, an organization must define its tolerance for data loss. What are the SLAs that stakeholders require? If data is lost, to what point must it be recovered: a second ago, an hour ago, or a month ago? This decision is called the Recovery Point Objective (RPO). Another important design consideration is the target timeframe during which to recover lost data, or the Recovery Time Objective (RTO). These objectives determine the performance levels and frequency requirements for data protection operations.
The economic impact of data loss can range anywhere from minor to catastrophic. Most organizations have multiple datasets and multiple constituencies, each demanding different SLAs. Consequently there may be multiple RPO and RTO requirements in a single deployment.
1 “Common Risks for Data Loss” are summarized from the Oracle white paper entitled, “Data Protection Strategies In Today’s Data Center.”
COMMON RISKS FOR DATA LOSS1
Data loss typically happens in one of the following ways. Each of
these eventualities must be accounted for in a data protection
plan and the solutions deployed to implement it.
User error – A user can make a simple typing mistake,
overwrite a file or setting, or enter incorrect information. Also,
user activities delegated to some sort of automation may fail or
not have been designed to anticipate a specific condition and
cause data loss.
Media error – Media may record an incorrect bit because of
electrical spikes, media imperfections, or other reasons
causing data loss.
Minor equipment failure – Minor equipment, such as a single
hard disk drive or controller or other component in the chain, is
likely to fail at some point causing data loss.
Excessive equipment failure – Excessive equipment failure is
when multiple pieces of equipment, such as multiple hard disk
drives in an array, fail at the same time causing data loss.
Catastrophic loss – Catastrophic loss is when multiple
computer systems fail at the same time or an entire data center
is lost at once due to a natural or human disaster.

Oracle Engineered Systems
Oracle engineered systems such as Oracle Exalogic, Oracle Exadata, and the SPARC SuperCluster exemplify end-to-end integrations where storage is tightly integrated into the stack to enhance performance and data protection characteristics. For example, Oracle Exadata systems include redundant components to enhance reliability and offer multiple approaches to protecting data through backups. Disk backup and restore can be performed utilizing the Oracle Database Fast Recovery Area located within the Oracle Exadata system itself, or Oracle Exadata can be used in concert with Oracle’s best-of-breed storage and data protection technologies such as those discussed in the section entitled, “Oracle’s Storage Products for Data Protection.”
These Oracle solutions combine server, network, and storage into a single offering that has been optimized by Oracle to accelerate deployment, reduce risk, and deliver performance gains. At some customer installations, storage integration into the stack is driving up to a tenfold improvement in application performance and storage efficiency with Oracle engineered systems2.
Oracle Integrated Offerings
In addition to engineered systems such as the ones mentioned above, Oracle’s integrated offerings also include Oracle Optimized Solutions for everything from Oracle Database to Oracle WebCenter Content. Oracle software products are tested across the full suite of Oracle hardware offerings to help reduce the risk of production deployment issues for Oracle customers.
Specific to data protection, Oracle offers a host of proven solutions including Oracle Database backup and recovery with Sun ZFS Storage Appliance, Oracle Fusion Middleware Disaster Recovery with Sun ZFS Storage Appliance, and the Oracle Optimized Solution for Oracle Secure Backup. Each of these solutions reduces the time to implementation and provides immediate business value. For example, the integrated high-performance backup solution for Oracle Exadata using Oracle’s Sun ZFS Storage Appliances can greatly reduce backup and recovery time compared to traditional NAS storage systems.
Oracle’s Storage Products for Data Protection
To enable organizations to tailor a storage solution to their unique data protection needs, Oracle offers a complete portfolio of best-of-breed storage products that can be easily integrated with third-party offerings or deployed within an end-to-end Oracle solution. With solutions ranging from high performance NAS storage to enterprise tape libraries and disk-to-disk-to-tape solutions, Oracle offers a range of options to balance RPO, RTO, and backup window requirements while also offering industry leading ease-of-deployment, lower management costs, and low total cost of ownership.
2 Customer Robi Axiata Unlimited has achieved 10x faster reporting and data load times using Oracle Exadata. See Figures 1 and 3 in the case study at http://www.oracle.com/us/corporate/customers/robi-axiata-5-case-study-1415809.pdf

As show in Figure 2, the portfolio includes the Oracle engineered systems that were discussed in the previous section as well as the following primary categories of storage that can be used to protect Oracle engineered solutions, Oracle integrated offerings, and applications in mixed-vendor environments:
NAS Storage
Oracle’s Sun ZFS Storage Appliances deliver high performance, enabling organizations to achieve shorter recovery time objectives and shrink backup windows, especially when using Oracle Applications or the Oracle Database. Sun ZFS Storage Appliances also deliver a wide range of industry-standard file access and connection protocols to provide data protection for Oracle integrated applications and third party applications. Advanced data protection services such as snapshots, clones, remote replication and more are built-in to the appliance.
SAN Storage
Oracle’s Pillar Axiom 600 storage area network (SAN) solutions deliver storage that is “application aware.” These systems enable organizations to consolidate storage for multiple applications while maintaining predictable storage performance for the highest priority applications. Each application’s storage characteristics and priority can be managed and tuned automatically or by an administrator. Oracle’s Pillar Axiom fibre channel arrays also provide mission-critical storage that scales in every dimension, including IOPS, bandwidth, and capacity.
Tape Storage
Oracle’s StorageTek tape libraries deliver storage when there are less stringent RTOs and where short or long-term archival is the right choice. At the lowest cost per GB, lowest energy consumption and longest media lifespan, tape is ideal for cost-effective data protection.
Figure 2. Oracle’s complete storage portfolio includes both business-ready engineered systems and best of breed
point solutions for mixed environments.
While SAN solutions, and in particular, Pillar Axiom 600 storage systems have their place in data protection, this paper is focused on how to take advantage of data protection features in Oracle’s NAS

and tape offerings. Readers interested in learning more about “application aware” Pillar Axiom 600 storage solutions can find more information at http://www.oracle.com/storage/.
The remainder of this paper describes the business benefits that can be achieved by using the capabilities of Sun ZFS Storage Appliances and StorageTek tape library solutions to achieve superior data protection.
Oracle’s Sun ZFS Storage Appliance Solutions
Sun ZFS Storage Appliances are stand-alone Network Attached Storage (NAS) systems in an easy-to-use appliance package. They can be deployed in a variety of end-to-end Oracle data protection solutions to address the key data protection goals mentioned above. They have performance and space efficiency as well as cost advantages when used with Oracle Databases or in other data protection application contexts.
Built-in Data Protection Features
Sun ZFS Storage Appliances have a robust set of data protection features built-in that ensure component and appliance level data availability. The rich set of data services includes compression, data deduplication, mirroring, snapshot, error correction, and system management features that help simplify ongoing data management. These integrated offerings enable enterprises to achieve greater value from their storage investments by realizing greater application performance, reduced in-house integration costs, simplified storage management, and greater storage efficiency. For example:
Replication – The remote replication feature of the Sun ZFS Storage Appliance automatically synchronizes data stored on two different Sun ZFS Storage Appliance configurations, making it easy to implement business continuity or disaster recovery plans.
Snapshots and Clones – Oracle Solaris ZFS enables an unlimited number of snapshots and clones for Sun ZFS Storage Appliances. Snapshots are read-only point-in-time copies of data and clones are writable copies. A copy-on-write approach is used so that no physical storage space is allocated to the snapshot or clone until the data is changed.
In addition to these data protection features, Sun ZFS Storage Appliances also give administrators real-time visibility into storage I/O patterns through DTrace Analytics, enabling administrators to quickly identify the source of performance bottlenecks and other data protection issues.
Industry Standard Protocol Support
Sun ZFS Storage Appliances also support integration into Oracle and third-party deployments that use other standard based protocols. Thus the data protection capabilities afforded by the solution are extended across many application areas.
Access Protocols – Sun ZFS Storage Appliances support industry access protocols. With seamless, transparent file sharing and secure access across both UNIX and Microsoft Windows environments, Sun ZFS Storage Appliances simplify deployment in heterogeneous environments. They include native support for the Common Internet File System (CIFS) protocol to simplify integration in Windows file-

7
sharing environments. In addition to Lightweight Access Directory Protocol (LDAP) support, they also include support for Microsoft Active Directory integration and role-based access control — helping to reduce the risk of unauthorized access to data.
Connection Protocols – Sun ZFS Storage Appliances support more connection options than other leading storage platforms. The Sun ZFS Storage Appliance provides all of the following connection options in a single platform: InfiniBand, Fibre Channel SAN, Network Attached Storage over Ethernet, and IP-SAN.
Reduce Exposure to Data Loss and Business Interruption
The Sun ZFS Storage Appliance helps ensure that data remains free of errors over time. Sun ZFS Storage software provides end-to-end check summing and data integrity checking to reduce the risk that files will be corrupted when restoring old backups. Industry-leading triple-parity RAID further reduces the risk of data loss. Sun ZFS Storage Appliances also have a self-healing fault management architecture to increase their uptime and availability.
In an Oracle Database context, Sun ZFS Storage Appliances and Oracle Recovery Manager (RMAN) can help reduce exposure to data loss by ensuring transaction integrity and managing all information required for database recovery to any point in time.
Disaster recovery can be accomplished with the flexible architecture and included features and functionality of the Sun ZFS Storage Appliance. It is an ideal platform to compliment the Oracle Data Guard and Oracle Fusion Middleware environments. Oracle Fusion Middleware is the foundation for the Oracle Application infrastructure, enabling Oracle Applications to be provisioned and operated efficiently. In addition, Oracle Data Guard provides a comprehensive set of services that make it easy for administrators to create, maintain, manage, and monitor one or more standby databases to enable production Oracle Databases to survive disasters and data corruptions.
The Sun ZFS Storage Appliance complements theses data recovery capabilities by enabling the Oracle Fusion Middleware infrastructure to be deployed directly on the appliance where it can be automatically replicated to a remote site using the remote replication feature of the appliance. This complements replication of the Oracle Database component using Oracle Data Guard.
Faster Performance
Sun ZFS Storage Appliances have performance characteristics to meet the demands for shorter backup windows and faster recovery. They leverage high-performance industry-standard servers along with densely packaged high-capacity disk drives. Solid-state drives (SSDs) act as read and write caches to increase performance. This enables breakthrough storage performance with exceptional economics.
Sun ZFS Storage Appliances offer high-speed data protection for the Oracle Database in Oracle Exadata systems because the appliances can be directly connected via high-speed InfiniBand network fabric. They can be deployed in both disk-to-disk (D2D) and disk-to-disk-to-tape (D2D2T) configurations. Optimization for use with the Oracle RMAN ensures faster backup and restore operations.

A high-throughput architecture and a densely populated configuration enable a low-cost solution with a small footprint and lower energy costs, using half the power of equivalent systems.
Faster and easier day-to-day management (see more details below).
Cost Advantages in an Oracle Database Context
When used to protect data in Oracle Databases, Sun ZFS Storage Appliances can help reduce costs in the following ways:
Unique to Oracle storage for the Oracle Database, Sun ZFS Storage Appliances support Hybrid Columnar Compression (HCC) for Oracle Database 11g. By migrating to Sun ZFS Storage Appliances from other vendors’ NAS devices, enterprises can see an immediate 3x to 5x reduction in their storage footprint with HCC. In addition to storage efficiencies, HCC format can result in a 10x to 50x reduction in I/O traffic and reduced memory utilization.
Space consumption is optimized using the file multiplexing and compression features in Oracle RMAN. Data compression of the Oracle RMAN backup can also be performed in the appliance where it won’t impact performance in the database server. Compression can improve storage efficiency and thus reduce capital expenditures by reducing storage capacity requirements4.
Faster and Easier Day-to-Day Management
Sun ZFS Storage Appliances provide unmatched simplicity and ease-of-use through an intuitive and powerful browser user interface (BUI). Operational savings include simplifying and shortening general administration, provisioning new storage, monitoring and troubleshooting, and analytics to help quickly diagnose and resolve performance issues across the storage environment.
A 2010 Edison Group Comparative Management Cost Study found that Sun ZFS Storage Appliances are5:
36% faster in administrative tasks
36% faster to provision new storage
31% faster to monitor and troubleshoot issues
4 Note that if the data has already been compressed in an application such as the Oracle Database, using compression within the Sun ZFS Storage Appliance will not likely result in much additional storage efficiency. 5 “Oracle ZFS Storage Appliance Comparative Management Costs Study.” Edison Group, August 2010.

StorageTek Tape Library Solutions
While long term data protection can be achieved with disk-based solutions, disk is not always the best choice for long term storage. When longer term data retention or off-site copies for disaster recovery are required, StorageTek tape drive and tape library solutions provide the answer.
Tape-based archival solutions are usually less expensive, are greener, use less power, and have better media longevity. StorageTek tape products can participate in intelligent, policy-based tiered storage where native tape, disk-to-disk (D2D), and disk-to-disk-to-tape (D2D2T) decisions are optimized based on an organization’s needs and SLAs.
Reduce Exposure to Data Loss and Business Interruption
Data center operators need to be able to meet their backup windows and know that should a restore be required, the system is online to access that data and the data is accurate. Component redundancy can improve overall system availability to ensure that an organization can always backup and retrieve their data. StorageTek solutions provide high availability, reliability, and data integrity.
Availability – The StorageTek SL8500 modular library system was the first library product in the industry to offer full redundancy across power, robotics, and library electronics subsystems. Its highly redundant design along with support for non-disruptive serviceability has resulted in overall library availability of 99.996%. The StorageTek SL3000 library system also offers full redundancy of these three major subsystems and has an overall availability of 99.992%.
Data Integrity - StorageTek Data Integrity Validation ensures that data is not corrupted while traveling along the data path. The StorageTek T10000C tape drive supports cyclic redundancy checks (CRCs) created at the host, then checked in the drive itself, allowing faster performance compared to tape drive systems that depend on server software to check CRC codes. In addition to end-to-end data integrity validation, whenever a record is read from a StorageTek T10000C tape, the CRC can be checked in the drive to verify integrity. Tape offers the best uncorrectable bit error rate (UBER) of any storage device. The StorageTek T10000C tape drive also offers an uncorrectable bit error rate (UBER) of 1 x 1019.
Faster Performance and Lower Costs
Oracle offers superior price/performance with the StorageTek T10000C tape drive and faster cartridge retrieval with StorageTek tape libraries. The throughput per dollar offered by StorageTek solutions is higher than competing systems.
StorageTek libraries also have other performance advantages that affect overall performance of backup and restore operations. Their higher performance helps meet shrinking backup window goals. The efficient design of the StorageTek tape libraries and faster robotics on the StorageTek SL8500 library mean less time is required for tape mounts and dismounts, resulting in better overall performance throughput. These are “hard dollar” metrics that increase the ROI on the tape component of a data protection deployment.
Oracle Storage Solutions for Data Protection and Business Continuity
11
Figure 4. The StorageTek T10000C tape drive offers 38% better throughput per dollar than IBM tape drives.
Faster and Easier Day-to-Day Management
Oracle’s StorageTek Library Console software, which comes with the StorageTek SL8500 modular library system, enables staff to easily monitor and manage tape libraries via a remote, network-based operator panel or an optional local touch screen operator panel. Either way, convenient, consistent control through software enables the following:
Display library logs and status alerts
Run reports on drive and media statistics
Perform audits, self-tests, and diagnostics on the library and its components
In addition to StorageTek Library Console, Oracle also offers additional storage software solutions that can simplify management of tape environments. One example is StorageTek ACSLS (Automated Cartridge System Library Software) Manager. This software enables organizations to implement a strategic, centralized library management solution. It functions as a central service provider for operating StorageTek libraries in heterogeneous environments. With StorageTek ACSLS, disparate application-dedicated libraries can be collapsed into one centralized library or into a string of libraries accessed via a single point of control.
Expand and Migrate Without Disruption
Large enterprise tape libraries often support up to 2,000 exchanges per hour and are in near continuous use. It is important to be able to add capacity without taking the library offline, enabling applications to continue processing with 24x7 access to the data. StorageTek solutions support:
Growth without disruption – Add slots while the library continues to operate with capacity-on-demand licensing. StorageTek SL8500 tape library supports pass-through technology to connect up to 10 libraries in a single archive. Quad-redundant pass-through ports can be added without taking the existing library offline. This non-disruptive scalability enables organizations to grow to 100,000 slots and 640 tape drives without having to take the library offline for an upgrade.
Any Cartridge Any Slot – StorageTek tape libraries enable organizations to flexibly grow their libraries because multiple types of drives and cartridges can coexist within the same library. Consolidating multiple formats in a single library not only saves cost, but it also makes it easier to migrate from old drives and cartridges to new ones.
Oracle Storage Solutions for Data Protection and Business Continuity
12
Partitioning – For customers that have more than one data protection environment, Oracle StorageTek library support up to 8 physical partitions within a single library. This provides each backup environment its own dedicated resources while keeping all tape assets within a single library footprint.
Media Reuse – In addition to having backwards compatibility where new drives can read old media, the new generation of drives can write to the media used by the previous generation of drives at the full new capacity. This kind of media re-use can lower costs of data protection environments. When it is time to recycle expired data protection copies, reformat and reuse cartridges at the new higher capacity.
Oracle Storage Solutions for Data Protection and Business Continuity
13
