ACADEMIC DRESSThe academic d ress for matriculated undergraduates of the University shall be similar to the Scholar 's Gown of the University of Oxford . It shall be worn whenever the President so directs .
The gown s of t l1e Bachelors shall be of black stuff. The gowns of the Masters shall be of blackstuff or silk. Tt1e gowns of Doctors shall be of fine scarlet cloth or silk . or black stuff or silk .
The pattern of , he Bachelor 's gown shall be similar to that of the Oxford Bachelor 's gown . Thepattern of the Master's gown and of the Doctor's black gown shall be similar to that of the Oxford Master 's gOwn. except that the Doctor's gown shall have an edging of black silk bra id atthe opening of the sleeve. The Doctor's scarlet gown shall be similar to that of the Oxford Docto r
of Divinit y 's gown . • .Thehoodsoftl1eBachelorsshallbemadeofblackstuff.thehoodsofMasters of black silk, andthe hoods of DoCtors of scarlet silk. They shall be full in shape and lined with the University coloursof claret and w!"ite. The hoods of the Bachelors shall be edged with white fur . the tippets withvelvet in the colOurs distinctive of the Faculty or Degree . The hoods and tippets of the Mastersshall be edged with velvet in the colours distinctive of the Faculty or Degree. The hoods and tip pets of Doctors 9hall be edged with silk in the colours distinctive of the Faculty or Degree . However .the hood of the Docto r of Philosophy degree shall be of claret silk. lined an d edged with claret silk.

Dr. jaap Tuinman is an international scholar and academic . Originall y from the Netherlands.where he obtained his bachelors and masters degrees in education and his MO-A teachingcertificate. he earned his PhD at the University of Georgia. He has taught in tl ' ~etherlands .
Surinam, the United States and Canada , He came to Memorial from Simon Fraser Univer sitv.British Columbia, where he served as dean of education and director of graduate programs . Dr.Tuinman has received numerous awards and honours and holds memberships in an array ofprofessional educational organizations, including the Canadian Society for the Study ofEducation and the Canadian Educational Research Association. He has published widely on thetopics of educational measurement and reading, and has developed a comprehensive list ofcurriculum materials, especially those related to reading

Born Alexandra Fraser in 51. John 's , M s. Gwyn received her bachelor of arts degree fromDalhousie University in 1955 and launched into a versatile career. In 1956-57 she worked withthe Ins titute of Co ntemporary Arts in London, England, and from 1958 to 1961 with theNat iona l Ga llery of Cana da, Otta wa. In 1962 she turned to a career in writing . She has doneresear ch and writing for CBC radio and televisi on , and for Time, Maclean 's and Saturday N igbtmagazi nes. Included in he r wor k for var iou s federal government departments was the 1971repo rt, Women in tbe Arts in Ca nada, for the Royal Commiss ion on the Status of Women. From1975 to 1980 she was editor of Saturday Nigbt , and continued as a contributingeditorforsevenyears. In 1980 she bega n to co ncentrate on social history . Her book, Tbe Private Capital:Ambition and Lave in the Age of MacDonald and Laurier, won both the Governor-GeneraI's Awardand the Canadian Authors Award for non-ficti on . She is now completing a new work in socialhistory, Tbese Years were tbei r Lives, dealing wi th the exper iences of Canadians andNewfoundlanders during the First World War .
A well-know n historian and writer, Dr. Waite has earned special recognition for his contributionto the hist ory of the Atlantic region and his expertise in the history of the Confederation era.Having receiv ed h is MA from the University of British Columbia in 1950 , he began hisacademi c ca reer at Dalhousie University in 1951. Upon completion of his doctorate in history atthe Un ive rsity of Toronto in 1954 , he returned to Dalhousie , where he became assistantpro fessor 11955l,associateprofessor 11960landprofessor 11961l;heservedasheadofthehistory depa rtment 1960-68. In 1985 Dalhousie named him the Thomas McCulloch professor,and in 1988 he became professo r emeritus.
