Challenges with SAP HANA backups

While data centers are being modernized for agility and flexibility, the backup architectures have lagged behind in design and efficiencies. Backup architectures are rigid, obsolete and are at a breaking point for many IT environments. In addition, application owners such as HANA database administrators (DBAs) have very specific requirements for protection of databases and routinely use native tools and interfaces to manage backup and recovery procedures. Often times, the primary data protection involves creating database dumps using application native tools on primary storage and then coordinate with backup administrators to create a safe backup copy both locally and remotely for added protection and disaster recovery. The recovery of databases works the same but in the reverse order.

The drawbacks of this approach include that it is:

• Expensive—Storing dump on primary storage is expensive. Most customers don’t bother deleting SAP HANA dumps on primary storage, so it eats up space and increases cost.

• Complex—Too many error-prone manual processes. IT staff spends too much time coordinating backups between the SAP HANA database admin and backup admin.

• Slow—Two-stage recovery is slow and cannot satisfy mission-critical recovery time and recovery point objectives or service-level agreements.

With ever-shortening backup windows and the aggressive recovery SLAs set by business, such sub-optimal approach for backup and recovery of HANA is no longer acceptable or sustainable.

Modernizing SAP HANA data protection with HPE StoreOnce

To circumvent issues related to error-prone manual backups, SAP HANA introduced “Backint for SAP HANA”—an application programming interface to manage and automate backups directly from the SAP HANA Studio management console. This new approach allows third-party vendors to integrate their software agents, which greatly simplifies backup and recovery processes.

HPE StoreOnce plug-in for SAP HANA

HPE StoreOnce System is one of the industry-leading disk-based backup and deduplication solution offering you a single, federated deduplication technology across your entire enterprise—from small, remote offices to your enterprise data center.

HPE StoreOnce plug-in for SAP HANA, a Backint compatible intelligent connector between HANA and StoreOnce backup target, which provides DBAs faster backup and accelerated recovery of HANA databases. An alternate to traditional NAS or virtual tape library (VTL) backup targets the StoreOnce plug-in for SAP HANA is installed directly on your database servers and integrates with HANA Studio to initiate backup and restore operations. The plug-in provides an option to either deduplicate the HANA database backup at the source i.e., on the HANA nodes or on the target StoreOnce appliance. The advantage of source-side deduplication is that less backup data flows through network, whereas the target-side deduplication reduces the deduplication load on the HANA application servers. Either way, your DBAs have the flexibility to choose the best deduplication method that suits their needs. As a result of the StoreOnce plug-in, your DBAs can back up HANA databases without the need for an additional backup application to manage backups and recoveries which yields additional cost savings. The plug-in works with HANA CLI or DBA Cockpit that your DBAs use for backup and recovery eliminating any learning curve and puts database administrators in the comfort zone and environment they are used to.

Centralized administration via SAP HANA StudioWith the StoreOnce plug-in for HANA, your SAP administrator can define backup policies and initiate recoveries without leaving the SAP HANA Studio. This lowers operational expense (OPEX) and saves a ton of time for database administrators, plus provides greater control over data protection. That’s power for your SAP administrator. Additionally, the high performance of HPE StoreOnce reduces lengthy backup windows so your business stays productive.
