    Warehouse

A warehouse is a commercial building for storage of goods.

Warehouses are used by manufacturers, importers, exporters, wholesalers,

    transport businesses, customs, etc.

Warehouses have loading docks to load and unload goods from trucks.

Warehouses also have cranes and forklifts for moving goods, which are usually

placed on ISO standard pallets loaded into pallet racks.

    Warehouse storage systems

Most common warehouse storage systems are:

Pallet racking including selective, drive-in, drive-thru, double-deep, pushback, and

    gravity flow

Mezzanine including structural, roll formed, racks

    Vertical Lift Modules

    Horizontal Carousels

    Vertical Carousels.

    Challenges faced by warehouse

    Warehouse space utilization.

    Un-optimized layout.

    Higher cost of running warehouse.

    Challenges in implementing warehouse processes.

Managing peak hours outbound and inbound flow.

    Resource Planning.

Ensuring delivery in full on time.

    Warehouse optimization

Optimizing warehouse space is the maximum utilization of space in storing

    and retrieving products.

Warehouse space is optimized when the facility and equipment are combined

to meet operational goals and customer requirements.

    Increasing efficiency by warehouseoptimization

Get rid of space wasters old equipment, obsolete inventory, etc. Sell them at discount prices orauction them off.

Keep popular stock items in prime pick areas. Put slow-moving merchandise in an area where it willnot clog highly trafficked areas.

Look at underused or unused areas of your warehouse.

Watch workflow from department to department.

Schedule regular meetings with employees and managers to ask about ways the operation could

improve.Boost employee morale with ergonomically efficient work areas and performance incentives. Addhours or shifts to your labor force.

Consider cross docking for some of the inventory. Cross docking reduces the need for storage spacebecause it takes popular incoming merchandise and transfers it directly to the shipping area whereorders are being processed. A good conveyor system speeds the transfer of cross docking.

Run a scheduled dock by insisting that every incoming and outgoing driver make an appointment.

    Horizontal warehousing

    Horizontal Carousels :

Horizontal Carousels are a system of horizontally rotating shelves that move

at your command, delivering items to you and increasing order picking

throughput significantly over traditional methods. They save space and speed

    operations.

Horizontal Carousels are particularly popular for distribution applications.

Low-maintenance, and durable, Horizontal Carousels can provide years of

worry-free inventory management, security, space savings, and faster, better

    order picking.

    Vertical warehousing

Vertical carousels : Vertical Lift Modules

Efficient automation fully utilizes vertical space, enhances picking speed

    and accuracy.

Vertical lift modules are an automated storage and order picking solution

that significantly increases the performance of your warehouse and the

flexibility of your storage and order picking processes while increasing

    storage density and saving space.

Study on efficient and effectiveTransportation measure to leverage SupplyChain.

Firms transportation strategy should supports its competitive

strategy. Firms should evaluate the transportation function based on

a combination of transportation costs, other costs such as inventory

affected by transportation decisions, & the level of responsivenessachieved with customers .

Transportation cost is based on the location of major markets and

customers, the location of supply points ,the volume of the product

moving to or from supply points.

In order to have efficient and effective transportation measure

following steps are needed to be taken:

Refrigerated trucking facilities:- Company should have Refrigerated

trucking facilities that transports all types of refrigerated , frozen,

    temperature-sensitive products.

GPS to allocate vehicles:- It helps in tracking the vehicle trac

    with GPS.

    Strong in house transportation department.

Availability of transportation management system for real

    time visibility of vehicles.

    Product traceability.

Design and operation :- How it should be received , the

nature of product customer needs and order service levels.

    Transportation Technology :-transportation technology

should be used in order to improve the supply chain .
