Opt-Max® Shieldguard 5040 Marine Cylinder Oil
For Engines Operating on fuels with Sulphur content of 0.1%<S<1.5%
It is more and more common for Seagoing vessels to operate with low Sulphur fuels. Indeed on one hand there are Emissions controlled Areas (ECA’s) that enforce the use of low sulfur fuels (ULSFO, MDO or MGO) and on the other hand, fuel available in some areas of the world such as Russia or South America can be low Sulphur residual fuels (typically around 1%). When operating with low Sulphur fuel, the requirement for the cylinder lubricant is to provide the right lubrication oil film and cylinder unit cleanliness while avoiding excessive deposit formation that can be detrimental:
for the liner that can undergo liner polishing
for the piston ring grooves that can be excessively worn
for the piston ring free rotation motion that can be hindered by the deposits on their backside. Opt-Max has launched the Opt-Max® Shieldguard 5040 to address the lubrication requirement for Low Sulphur Heavy Fuel Oils, Marine Diesel Oil (MDO) and Marine Gas oil (MGO) operations. Opt-Max® Shieldguard 5040 has been developed to provide excellent detergency and combustion by-product dispersancy levels while operating at various loads. The formulation has been optimized to steadily lubricate 2 stroke crosshead engines cylinder units in an efficient and reliable manner. With its deposits control abilities, it allows avoiding issues that may arise on the piston crown or in the ring grooves by minimizing deposits build up. Its enhanced anti- wear properties significantly reduce the abrasive wear of the cylinder liner and minimizes the risk of adhesive scuffing taking place on the cylinder liner/ piston ring contact. Very low wear rate of the liner and excellence deposit control of the piston ring grooves have been observed and reported on vessels that are using Opt-Max® Shieldguard 5040 while operating with Low Sulphur fuels.

Opt-Max® Shieldguard 5070 Marine Cylinder Oil
For Engines Operating on fuels with Sulphur content of 1%<S<3.5%
Opt-Max® Shieldguard 5070 is a first-rate intermediate BN cylinder oil primarily designed for continuous operation with medium to high sulfur heavy fuel oils (1% to 3.5%) and with Low Sulfur fuel oils and distillates for limited operation time.
It is particularly advised for modern crosshead 2 stroke engines, may they be conventional or electronic ones. It provides great and advantageous lubrication features that are achievable for various operation profiles of the main engine. It has been developed to cater for the essential lubrication needs of a 2-stroke crosshead engine operated with high Sulphur residual fuel oils. It brings and maintains:

Improving Efficiency of Cylinder Lubrication with
Advanced Performance Marine Cylinder Oil,
Opt-Max® Shieldguard 50110
In the last few years, the shipping industry has been facing an ever growing challenge when it comes to the cylinder
lubrication of 2-stroke engines. Indeed, the application of fuel savings strategies, devices and tuning, and the
development of more fuel efficient engines lead to a more demanding environment for the cylinder units.
As a consequence, cylinder lube oil feed rate is to be increased by the operator, in order to reach an acceptable
residual BN and wear rate.
Moreover, OEMs strongly recommend higher BN lubricants (as compared to the classic 70 BN) to be used, thus
leading to an influx of 100 BN lubricants by most of the lube oil suppliers.
To address those challenges, Opt Max has launched the Opt-Max® Shieldguard 50110. Shieldguard 50110 is a
specially formulated cylinder oil with a BN 110.
It is designed for allowing a qualitative and quantitative optimization of the cylinder lubrication by allowing the ship
operator to reduce the cylinder lubrication feed rate while ensuring a good and protective cylinder lubrication
functionality.
Indeed, it provides to the engine enhanced acid neutralization, increased corrosion mitigation capabilities and wear
protection in comparison to conventional BN100 cylinder lubricant from the market.
Because of its well-thought formulation and BN value, Shieldguard 50110 will allow the operator to reduce the cylinder lubricant consumption and costs. This reduction is related to the fact that the operator will be requested to apply a cylinder lubrication feed rate that is lower than the one he would apply with conventional BN 70 or BN 100 cylinder lubricants. Moreover, the condition of the piston rings and the cylinder liners will be improved by the carefully selected anti wear and detergency formulation of the Shieldguard 50110.

To achieve a proper lubrication of the cylinder units and to prevent the occurrence of corrosion, OEMs in their Technical bulletins are recommending the adjustment of the feed rate as a function of the engine type, operation, fuel sulfur content and lubricant type. The formulation of Shieldguard 50110 allows reducing the sulfur dependency factor. Graph 1 explains how according to MAN service letter SL2014-587/JAP, the ACC factor is reduced by using a 100 BN instead of a 70 BN and how the Shieldguard 50110 obtains further reduction comparing to the conventional 100 BN.

The use of a 110 BN Cylinder lubricant also lowers the cylinder lubrication feed rate in comparison to the conventional 70 and 100 BN lubricants. Graph 2 shows that a significant reduction of the feed rate can be achieved by using Shieldguard 50110.

Maximum Protection against Cold-Corrosion with Ultra-high BN Marine Cylinder

In response to the changing needs of the marine
industry – introduction of latest diesel engine designs
and varying fuel sulfur contents and characteristics,
Opt-Max® has developed an ultra- high Base Number
(BN) cylinder oil concentrate of 140 BN, Opt-Max®
Flexguard 140.
Opt-Max® Flexguard 140 is designed with outstanding
neutralization capabilities to protect against cold
corrosion at optimal cylinder oil feed rates. It can be
used for direct applications as a marine cylinder oil
under extremely high corrosive conditions in line with maker’s recommendations or, be used as cylinder oil
concentrate to input in onboard blending and mixing systems for production of fit-for-purpose marine
cylinder oil.
An optimal cylinder oil feed rate can signify substantial cost- savings for ship owners given the savings in
lubrication consumption at the maximum cold- corrosion protection levels. Risks of deposits formation are also
reduced at optimal cylinder oil feed rate, along with other enhanced forms of engine protection ship owners
benefit from having an optimal cylinder oil feed rate.
Whether Flexguard 140 is being used as a straight marine cylinder oil or as cylinder oil concentrate, Flexguard
140 promises superior quality to its users. With a balanced dispersant and detergent composition, not only
does Flexguard 140 increases resistance to cold-corrosion due to high sulphur fuels and minimizes deposit
formation, it also assists in sludge reduction, while its superior wear protection extends the time between
overhauls (TBO) of the engine piston running components.

Cold Corrosion is a serious threat, lubrication adjustment is a puzzle, is your

for part-load or low-load operation (known as ‘slow steaming’, where vessels may operate as low as 10%

OptOMon supplies user-friendly onboard equipment for assessing the general condi�on of lubricants and of cylinder scrape-down lubricant in par�cular.
OptOMon comprises of onboard monitoring tools, such as BN and Water mobile test kits and SEA-Mate® Analyzer. The use of OptoMon products enables one to easily assess the condi�on of the engine through the analysis of the lubricants on board. Not only does it help to set a wear preven�on strategy, it ensures the compliance of the engine lubrica�on se�ngs with Engine Makers recommenda�ons in terms of BN and Iron. Cylinder Condi�on Inspec�on: A detailed inspec�on on the cylinder units at pre-determined intervals allows for a thorough assessment on its condi�ons such as signs of cold-corrosion, excessive wear, scuffing and others. Only through the detec�on of such problems would appropriate measures be taken in order to reduce lubrica�on consump�on and costs, to achieve an op�mal feed rate.

Dis�nct from the usual lubrica�on tes�ng and analysis services, OptAlap provides an in-depth analysis into the complexity of the specific lubricants used by individual vessels onboard that not only interpret the results of the elemental tests, but also to advise its possible causes and impact so as to make appropriate lubrica�on recommenda�ons for rec�fica�ons and/or performance improvements.
OptMap is a predic�ve tool that works by defining the engine piston running response at varying levels of opera�onal factors such as different fuel Sulphur content and load levels, etc. Through the defini�on of nodal measurement points for which scrape-down samples are to be collected, the user will be supplied with a mapping of the expectable wear and cylinder lubrica�on impact. It aids them to make an analy�cal and informed decision aiming at op�mizing feed rate, cylinder lubricant to be used or TBO defini�on.
Using Opt-Map data consolida�on and analysis, our specialists are able to determine the op�mal cylinder oil feed rates and/or BN requirements under different opera�ng and engine condi�ons.

The mari�me industry con�nues to be confronted with the dilemma of complying with emission regula�ons and the new opera�onal pa�erns such as slow steaming while providing appropriate lubrica�on to ensure op�mum piston and cylinder condi�on. New performance requirements on the lubrica�on products and the lubrica�on management are designed to ensure op�mum piston & cylinder condi�on and the crankcase cleanliness and will have a significant impact on the engine condi�on.
Thanks to the cost-effec�ve and total-flexibility of the SEA-Mate® Blending-on-Board (BoB) concept that Maersk Fluid Technology introduces, a ship’s cylinder oil can now be custom-blended on board for a con�nuous supply of superior quality oil that keeps engine opera�on running efficiently.
The SEA-Mate® Blending-On-Board (BoB) concept is simple and easy to operate. The Blending-On-Board (BoB) u�lises the in-service main engine system oil and blends it with specially formulated Opt-Max BoB concentrate, Opt-Max BoB 300 or Flexguard 140, to produce the desired BN cylinder oil for use in the engine. Such specialized concentrates will be formulated based on the same technology used for commercial cylinder oils.
There are many benefits of SEA-Mate® Blending-On-Board (BoB) ranging from elimina�on of cold corrosion by blending a fit-for-purpose cylinder oil with the right dosage of BN, to tangible benefits such as lower opera�onal costs and lesser environmental impact.
