    Message from OC

    Dear all,

It has been a meaningful and fruitful year for our unit this

year. There have been a lot new iniatives started, courses and

activities organised by our unit for our cadets. The primary objective

is to enhance our cadets NPCC experience. We hope that through

these various activities, all our cadets have benefited from them and

    will eventually become confident leaders.

I would also like to take this opportunity to show our heart-

felt gratitude and appreciation to all those who have, in one way or

another, helped and contributed to the growth and development of our

unit. Without their selfless commitment, ceaseless cooperation,

unconditional support and kind understanding, we would not be able

to achieve so much this year. These wonderful people include the

school management, the school staff, NPCC HQ and everyone in ourunit (the cadets, NCOs, senior NCOs, CIs and teacher officers),

especially the NCOs and the cadets. Thank you, one and all !!

I am also pleased to inform all of you that our unit will most

likely be able to attain a GOLD (if not, at least a SILVER) award for

the Unit Overall Proficiency Award (UOPA) this year. If so, this

will be a milestone and a historic year for a young unit like ours as it

will be our very first GOLD (or SILVER) award since the founding

of our unit in 1999 !! This is not an easy feat and neither can this

happen by chance. It is a result of the dedication and continuous

effort of everyone in our unit throughout the whole year. However,

the official result will only be released in February next year.

Lastly, I would like to say, Well done, OPSS NPCC !! Let

us continue to strive for greater success and achievement next year

and many more years to come !!

    CIBTC J07

24th June 2007 is the glorified day that the batch of J07 Cadet Inspector trainees finally passed out as Cade

Inspectors (CIs). This course was introduced to equip potential ex-NC0s, identified by their units OC, to continue serving

    the corps as CIs.

Let me share my experience having undergone the Cadet Inspector Basic Training Course (CIBTC).

As I stood outside Home Team Academy (HTA), my heart began to fill up with the passion for NPCC again. The

first day of the modular course marks the start of my challenging journey in CIBTC. Being the first day indicates that the

duty group for that day will be Alpha squad. I did not see this as an unfortunate task but an ice-breaker for my squad. As

the duty squad, we have the responsibility of ensuring that every trainee in J07 attends all activities punctually and to take

attendance before each meal. Even though it was a long modular course, my squad really bonded more with each passing

    day.

After going through the modular courses, it was time for the Residential Course at the HTA from 9th to 12th June

During the Residential Course, also known as RC, all 6 squads from J07 were allocated to different bunks. Once again, we

have to accustom ourselves to our surroundings and also get to know our bunk-mates. This was not difficult as at the end

of each day, all of us have a common topic and that is how dreadful debrief was lengthy and draggy. = )

The last component of the course was the Adventure Training Camp (ATC). This ATC was not what I expected it

to be. It was totally different from all other ATCs that I had experienced. We were given the freedom to execute what we

had planned. On the last day of the camp, mixed feelings of sorrows and joys filled the air. Some were glad as it was the

last day and we can go back to our comfortable home while others were also sad for the same reason.

However, one quote still lingers within me; A man only cries during 2 occasions: the birth of a child and the

death of a loved one. This was said by the course manager, Ms Serene Boo. This statement encourages me to be strong in

    times of difficulty.

The participants were grouped into 4 details and each

runner has only 1 chance to do their best. In cases when there

is any discrepancy, a panel of 3 judges (consisting of our HOD

PE/CCA Mr Sim, myself and our adjutant) were appointed. To

ensure the fairness of the competition, 2 recorders were

assigned to each runner and were located at opposite ends of

each lane. And, to help build up the atmosphere, our Sec 1

cadets were tasked to cheer for all the participants. This also

provides an opportunity for our Sec 1 cadets to be familiar

with some of the commonly-used NPCC cheers.

    NPCC Inter-Unit Beep Test

    What is the Beep Test?

It is also known as Multi-Staged Fitness Test. The

Beep Test is used to monitor the development of a

sportspersons maximum oxygen uptake (VO2 max). It is also

used as a measure of personal fitness for team sports, like

soccer, hockey, rugby and basketball. In some countries, it is

even used as a fitness test for the Army and the Police Force

    personnel.

    How is it conducted?

Beep Test is similar to the shuttle run. The participant

has to run to and fro between 2 markers placed 20 metres apart

within a specific time. There are a total of 21 levels, ranging

from 7 to 16 laps per level. The number of laps increases

progressively with each level while the timing for each lap

decreases. Hence, the participant has to increase his/her speed

with each lap gradually. The test completes once the runner is

unable to keep up with the stipulated pace for 2 consecutive

laps or when he/she decides to give up.

On Friday the Thirteenth this year (13 th July 2007),

our unit organised an NPCC Inter-Unit Beep Test Challenge

2007. A total of 13 units took part in this first ever Beep Test

    Challenge.

The objective of this challenge is to promote the Beep

Test and to provide an opportunity for cadets from various

units to interact with each other. For our unit, it is also a good

chance for our cadets to work together and to foster better

team spirit among them. It also serves as an excellent

opportunity for our NCOs to display their leadership and

    organisational abilities.

On the day of the event, after the representatives from

all the participating units have registered, a briefing was

conducted by INSP Lo Weng Han, the Teacher Officer in-

charge of this competition. After which, the participants were

ushered to the parade square to do their warm up before the

commencement of the Beep Test Challenge.

To mark the end of this sporting event, our HOD

PE/CCA Mr Sim presented the certificates of participation to

the representatives of all participating units whereas our Vice-

Principal Mr Nath awarded the trophies to the winners.

We would also like to take this opportunity to thank

everyone who has helped us in any way and all the

participating units for their invaluable support. The event was

a huge success and the objectives were fulfilled. Everyone

truly enjoyed themselves and had lots of fun. This is also a

significant milestone for a young unit like ours. It was a great

experience for all our cadets, especially our NCOs. They have

proven themselves to be worthy leaders and have demonstrated

impressive teamwork and excellent organisational skills.

Though it was the unlucky Friday the Thirteenth,

we were fortunate to emerge victorious and attain awards in

both the male and female categories! Our male representative,

SGT Matthias Goh, came in 1st and whereas our female

representative, CPL Josephine Yeo, managed to clinch the 2nd

spot. In the male category, Chestnut Drive NPCC units

representative managed to obtain the 3rd position while the 2nd

place went to Dunman High NPCC unit. Northland NPCC unit

and Yishun NPCC unit were also among the winners, securing

the 3rd and 1st placing in the female category respectively.

The record for the NPCC Inter-Unit Beep Test

Challenge 2007 was lap 1 of level 10 for the male

category and lap 3 of level 7 for the female category. Do

you know that various well-known sports personalities

have also tried the Beep Test, like the renowned England

soccer icon, David Beckham? He was reputed to have

completed the test! Famous English Premier League

players, like Brett Emerton and Lee Gong Dook, were

also reported to be able to reach levels 15 and 17

respectively. In professional basketball, Phoenix Suns

point guard, Steve Nash, is said to be able to achieve level

    14. As for the ladies, Casey Stoney, a member of the

England's Women's World Cup squad, is believed to have

    attained level 13.

What about you? Have you tried the Beep Test?

What is your personal record? If you would like to try it

out for yourself and pit against the best of the best, do

look out for the second season of our NPCC Inter-Unit

Beep Test Challenge next year. Who knows, you might

be the David Beckham of NPCC!

    Malaysia Educational

    Visit

    On 12th June 2007, 3 of my squad-mates and I were

specially selected to go on an educational visit to Malaysia

with other NPCC officers, CIs and Sec 2 cadets. In order to

qualify for this trip, we had to undergo a series of selection

processes. First, we had to be chosen by our teacher officers,

then we had to undergo an interview with our Assistant

Commandant (AC), after which he will pick deserving cadets

from the numerous nominations from other units in our Area.

Lastly, we had to be selected by the staff officers at NPCC HQ,

based on the remarks of our OC and AC. I was elated to beamong those given such a rare opportunity to go on this

    enriching trip.

The trip lasted for 5 days and 4 nights (till 16 th June).

Personally, I felt that these 5 days were spent meaningfully and

fruitfully. I thoroughly enjoyed every minute of the trip. On the

first day, we visited several schools in Malaysia. Even though

their spoken language was foreign to us, we were still able to

communicate through simple English. That was the first small

step towards forging a friendship between us. We danced

together and had loads of fun. We even exchanged our contacts

with each other. The exchange programme was enjoyable.

Lastly, we exchanged mementos and bade goodbye.

The next interesting and fun event is the boat ride

through Putrajaya Lake! It was a brand new experience for me.

Even though the weather was hot, the ride was still a cooling

one. The boat operator made the ride thrilling and exciting for

us, which made us screamed our lungs out. After the ride, we

were all wet and some even had a new hairstyle!

Next, we went to some famous tourist attractions and

took quite a number of photographs there. The place that left

the deepest impression on me was The Red House. As the

name implied, the exterior was coated with red paint!

Even though this trip was supposedly an educational

visit, we still managed to find time to do some shopping. We

went to various shopping centers like Berjaya Times Square,

the Mines Shopping Center and Kuala Lumpur Convention

    Center.

We also went to the well-known Batu Caves, which is

a limestone cave. However, before we can reach the caves, we

had to overcome a long steep flight of steps, over 200 steps.

Even though, it was exhausting, I did not regret climbing those

tiring steps as the view up there was breath-taking and the

experience of having just overcome the steps was simply

wonderful. There were monkeys up there too! The most

amusing incident was when the monkeys snatched flowers

from us and began chewing on them, as if they were

    delicacies.

We also went to observe the training session of the

Royal Malaysia Police. We noticed that their drills and their

commands were slightly different from ours. We also saw how

they trained the dogs and prepared them for drug search and

chasing of criminals. We went to the Royal Malaysia Police

Museum too. It was really an eye-opener for me. I was able to

see the weapons used back then and how they progressed and

developed into the modern weapons that the police use now. I

was also able to learn about the history of the Royal Malaysia

Police and understand better the differences between the Royal

Malaysia Police and the Singapore Police Force.

Of all the places that we visited during this trip, the

most splendid and memorable place would have to be the

Patronas Twin Towers! There were altogether 86 storey and we

managed to go as high as 85 storey. This was the very first

time that I was so high up into the sky! The feeling was simply

awesome, although it took us quite a while to get accustomed

to the height. The scenery at the top of the Patronas Twin

Towers is easily one of the best. I also learnt some general

knowledge as well: A good way to relieve the uncomfortable

sensation in our ears when we are on higher grounds is toswallow our saliva.

The trip was tiring but the physical fatigue is

insignificant compared to the memorable experience and the

priceless lifeskill lessons that I have gained from this visit. I

also learnt the importance of punctuality, leadership skills, to

be pro-active to handle unavoidable circumstances and most

importantly, integrity, from this trip. All in all, I find this

overseas educational visit beneficial and I am glad that I have

gained valuable skills, which I will never be able to acquire

    from elsewhere.

I will carry these skills with me and pass it on to others.

    A Life-Changing Experience

On 18th June 2007, I woke up early that morning. I was feeling excited as I was about to embark on the Outdoor

Discovery Course by OBS on that day. This course is organized by NPCC HQ for selected Sec 3 cadets. It is the first timeI am attending a 5-day camp. I have heard a lot about OBS, especially how physically and mentally demanding it can be.

On the other hand, I have also heard from my friends who have completed the course how fun it was for them too. I was

    filled with mixed feelings.

Three of my squad-mates and I went to Punggol Jetty in one of our parent's car. The ride from Yishun to the jetty

was not long, approximately twenty minutes. As we were waiting for the commencement of the camp, we sat and chatted

happily at the jetty. Though we appeared to be carefree and joyous, we were actually anxious and nervous about how our

OBS experience will turn out to be. It was a long wait for all for us. Finally, the camp instructors approached us. By that

time, we were all geared up and ready to step out of our comfort zone and head on towards Pulau Ubin, where our

challenges would gradually unfold one by one.

During the first day of the camp at Campsite 2, my squad-mates and I were separated into different groups. I was

looking at all the unfamiliar faces in my group. Although I was feeling nervous, I managed to make some friends by the

end of the first day. I felt that my group members are a bunch of helpful and approachable people. Every one of them has

their unique personality. I enjoyed being with them as they gave me warmth and happiness. We had several ice-breaker

and team-building games, of which Trust Fall and Hand and Rope were the most interesting.

Trust Fall is an activity where we have to learn to place our trust on our group members. We were told to stand

at the edge of a platform one at a time while our group members would stand along the two sides, in front of the platform.

They had to hold on to a big groundsheet and ensure that it was spread open tightly. The person standing on the platform

had to fold his/her arms with our back to our group members. Upon command, the person on the platform had to fall

backwards into the groundsheet held by the others. This proved to be not an easy feat as we were all new to each other.

Hand and Rope is an activity which requires our cooperation and teamwork. We had to stand in a circle, holding

onto hands of the persons beside us. The instructor then placed a tied rope in any of our hands. We would have to pass the

rope to the end without breaking the ring. This seemingly easy task took us some time to actually complete it. Though it

was not simple, we enjoyed ourselves and also learnt more about each other in the process.

On the second night, we went on a night walk. It was a nerve-wreaking experience for most of us. Our instructor

brought us to the starting point of the night walk. On our way there, we almost met with a wild boar. We actually heard a

wild boar roaring loudly and moving about in the bushes near us. We were all terrified. Our instructor told us to stay still

while he went forward to check the area. A minute later, he came back and told us that the coast was clear. Hence, we

carried on moving towards the starting point. Upon reaching the starting point, we were told that we had to walk back

alone to where we came from. We did not have any form of light with us, except for the dim moonlight, to guide us. When

it was my turn, I walked super fast, hoping that I would not encounter the wild boar again. Luckily for me, I reached the

destination and managed to gather with the rest. From this walk, I built up my confidence.

For the rest of our camping days, we had a kayaking session and a land expedition. Both activities were mentally

and physically challenging, especially the land expedition. During the kayaking course, we had to kayak for quite a few

hours from one side of Pulau Ubin to the other side. As I had done kayaking before, I was not afraid; instead I rather

enjoyed the experience. Although it was a long journey, I was not tired at all! This was because my group members

constantly kept me entertained the whole time. I even saw a jellyfish near the surface of the water! It was my first very

encounter with a jellyfish at such a close proximity. We were even allowed to bring some food with us in case we got

hungry. I regretted not bringing enough, but thankfully my kind and helpful group members share their food with me. = )

The next day, we had our land expedition. I was excited throughout the whole activity as I could explore parts of

Pulau Ubin. We carried our heavy haversacks filled with necessities, like food, clothing, tents, mass tins and bottles of

water. As I was the appointed medic for my group for the camp, I was required to carry the medic pack. I also had to

ensure that my group members were doing fine and gave them medication whenever needed. Many of us were exhausted

even before our expedition was halfway through. This was because our haversacks were really heavy. However, when we

reached Puaka, the highest peak on Pulau Ubin, we completely forgot about our tiredness as the scenery there was simply

breath-taking. Below the peak lies a huge granite quarry. Our instructor, Din, told us that if we were to shout from the

peak, we would be able to hear the echoes. We took turns to try and true enough, we did hear our echoes. At that point, we

were amazed at the beauty of nature. We were also informed by Din that some recreational facilities would be built there

in the future. I am glad to have the opportunity to visit the place before it closes for construction. After the short break, we

continued on our journey back to Campsite 2. Along the way, we encouraged one another and persevered on. Finally, we

arrived at our destination. To our surprise, we were the first to complete the expedition! We were ecstatic and started to

jump for joy and cheered loudly. Soon after, it began to rain. We quickly packed our stuffs and headed for shelter.

During that night, some of my group members performed for us. Their performance was so hilarious that I

laughed till I began to tear. We also exchanged our contacts with everyone. We really treasured the last night of the camp

as after tomorrow, we would have to go our separate ways.At last, the dreaded day arrived. It was the last day of the camp. We had to bid farewell to each other. It was such

an unbearable moment for me that I almost cried. We promised each other that we would still keep in touch and arrange an

outing in the near future. Though it was only a short 5-day 4-night camp, I have learnt and gained a lot from this

experience, like how to be more independent, confident, brave, and helpful. I also gained leadership qualities, like

volunteerism. I truly cherished the times spent with my friends from this camp. Last but not least, I strongly encourage

that everyone should try to attend this Outdoor Discovery Course. Outward Bound Singapore is really a life-changing and

    attitude-changing experience!

    My Reflection on LMSC

I attended the Leadership and Mentoring Skills

Course (LMSC) on 12th ~ 13th June 2007 at HTA with my

fellow Sec 3 squad-mates. This course is organised by NPCC

HQ, conducted by HOs and CIs, for all Sec 3 NPCC cadets.

The objective of this course is to equip the Sec 3 cadets with

the skills needed to perform their role as NCOs in their

    respective units.

The course was not as boring as I anticipated. There

were altogether 5 lectures that we had to attend. There were

also activities and games incorporated into the lectures. I

enjoyed the games segment the most as the games reallystimulate my mind.

In one of the lectures, I learnt about mentoring. I

realised that to be a mentor to another is not as simple as I

thought it would be. To me, a mentor is a person who just has

to teach others what needs to be taught. However, after the

lecture on mentoring, I found out that a mentor is actually

more than just being a teacher. He/She is also a friend, an

advisor as well as a motivator.

There was also a lecture on communication skills. I

found this lecture rather interesting as I realised that by simply

observing a persons gesture, we can actually have an idea as

to what the person is feeling and thinking. After the lesson, I

learnt that communication can be verbal and also non-verbal.

Of all the lessons, the most interesting is the one on

team-building. During this lecture, we had the chance to play a

lot of teambuilding games which also provided me with some

ideas for our units coming Annual Camp.

Overall, I truly enjoy myself at the LMSC and I have

learnt a lot from the officers and CIs.

    Annual Camp

On 30th June ~ 2nd July 2007, our unit had our Annual Camp in our school. This camp is organized by our Sec 3 NCOs for the Se

and 2 cadets. Before the start of the camp, I expected it to be the same as last year. Nevertheless, I still attended the camp, but honestly, I

not hold any high expectation and neither was I hoping for anything extraordinary to take place. But, I was terribly wrong. This camp w

    filled with pleasant surprises.

    Day 1

We reported to school at 0900 in our PT-kits. We were then separated into 4 different groups. Each group consists of cadets fr

    different levels, gender and races.

After our bag inspection and group allocation, we were asked to proceed to the hall where our bunk would be. We had our fi

game there. It was Double Wacko, with a twist. This game was very different from the other wacko games that we had played previou

This was more of a strategic game. Through this ice-breaker game, our group started to bond together. I also began to know the Sec 1 cad

better. I believed this was the same for the others too.

After the ice-breaker, we were asked to come up with our group names. My group decided to call ourselves, Blue Chain. T

name signifies our bonding together like a chain.

The next activity was lunch. As usual, we had to do outdoor cooking. Though this has been a routine practice in our unit, t

experience was different this time. This was because we, the Sec 2 cadets, had to teach and help the Sec 1 cadets, unlike last year where could rely on our seniors. It was a totally new and refreshing experience for me.

The rest of the activities were targeted at helping us build up on our team spirit and to help strengthen our bond as a group, like

Obstacle Course. The next interesting activity was the Night Walk at Yishun Park. This was also a practice in our unit. However, th

was a twist to this years Night Walk. Brainteasers and jokes were incorporated into the activity which made the walk much m

interesting and enjoyable. All the campers had fun and we really enjoyed ourselves.

    Day 2

We woke up very early, at 0600, in the morning and reported at the parade square for flag-raising. The first activity was bu

inspection, which was new to all of us. Our NCOs explained to us that this was to prepare the Sec 2 cadets for NCO Camp next yea

Though it was tough, I believed everyone learnt something from it and we were definitely more prepared for our NCO Camp next year.

The second activity was Physical Training (PT). The warm-up exercise was as usual. However, after the warm-up, we had Aero

Kick-Boxing. This was another pleasant surprise for us. All of us really enjoyed the PT though we were all exhausted and drenched

sweat. We were already looking forward to the PT the next day.

Another pleasant surprise was when we were asked to gather in the canteen during lunch. We thought that we would be havi

outdoor cooking again, just like the first day. However, we were given packed lunch instead. We all cheered and thanked our NCOs, CIs a

officers for the arrangement. Though lunch was nothing spectacular, we enjoyed it very much, especially after having to eat instant nood

and canned food for lunch and dinner the previous day. We learnt to appreciate our packed food much more.

The games on the second day were all team-building games, like Spiderman in Action, Hula Ball and Treasure Hun

Through these games, the bonding between our group members grew even stronger. At the same time, the atmosphere for the camp was b

up. All of us were hyped up and looking forward to the highlight of the camp, the Campfire.

Finally, it was time for the long-awaited Campfire. We had 2 VIPs to grace our campfire. They are none other than our HO

PE/CCA, Mr Sim (and his family) and our AC, DSP Selvakkrishnan. We really enjoyed ourselves. We sang, cheered, danced and perform

throughout the 2 hours. Even, our NCOs (Sec 3), senior NCOs (Sec 4), CIs and officers joined in the fun. We were like a big happy fam

But, inevitably all good things must come to an end. It was time to wash up and we were all sad when the campfire was declared closed.

    Day 3

On the last day of the camp, the main activity was area cleaning. We were assigned to clean up areas that we had used during t

camp. Though it was supposed to be the most boring and most dreaded activity in any camp, we enjoyed ourselves a lot. Somehow, we w

    still in high spirits.

The last activity before we broke camp was the award and prize presentation ceremony. CDT Pea Wei Liang Alan and LCP Sin YSuan were awarded the best Sec 1 and 2 campers respectively. Though my group did not win the overall group champion, I was certain t

after this camp, we knew each other better than before. I felt the unit really bonded like a family.

On behalf of all the campers, I would like to express our heart-felt gratitude and appreciation to the organizing committee (our S

3 NCOs), our CIs and officers for planning and organising such a wonderful camp! I hope next year when my squad organize the Annu

Camp for our unit, we can match up to the standard of our seniors.
