BACK TO HOMEWORKIt’s back to school, and for some families, it’s back to battling homework issues. Many families complain that getting their child to complete his homework is a hassle every night, while other students calmly stick to a routine and get their homework done with only one or two reminders. Here are some tips from Homework: A Guide for Parents by Peg Dawson, EdD, CCSP at the Seacoast Mental Health Center in Portsmouth, New Hampshire:

Write a homework contract. The contract should say exactly what the child agrees to do and exactly what the parents’ roles and responsibilities will be. When the contract is in place, it should reduce some of the tension parents and kids often experience. For instance, if part of the contract is that the child will earn a point for not complaining about homework or that the child actually turns in his homework after completion, then if the child does complain or does not turn in homework this should not be cause for a battle between parent and child; the child simply does not earn that point. Parents should also be sure to praise their children for following the contract. It will be important for parents to agree to a contract they can live with — that is, avoiding penalties they are either unable or unwilling to impose. (e.g., if both parents work and are not at home, they cannot monitor whether a child is beginning homework right after school, so an alternative contract may need to be written.) Contracts don’t always work the rst time; you may have to adjust the contract. Don’t give up and don’t give in.

Then set up a consistent routine:

Step 1. Find a quiet location in the house with no distractions where homework will be done.

Step 2. Set up a homework center complete with school supplies including a calculator, dictionary, and, if the child is older, a computer.

Step 3. Establish a homework time. You may want to allow your child some exercise outside and a snack time before completing homework.

Step 4. Establish a daily homework schedule. In the beginning, you will have to review homework assignments with your child and help him establish a priority list and how much time each assignment should take. You will also want to establish when breaks will be taken. This will help your child establish good study/work habits for college and work life.

Army Community Service equips people with the skills and education they need to face the challenges of military life today and tomorrow. Think of ACS when deploying or relocating, needing information and

services, or for crisis and family assistance.

ACS has been assisting soldiers and their families for 45 years, but it was not always the well oiled machine it is today. In celebration of 45 years, let’s take a step back in history and see how ACS started.

From the pioneer days to the all-volunteer Army of today, the concept of humanitarian concern for the welfare of others exists as the foundation of the Army way of

ARMY COMMUNITY life. For years, Army wives operated lending closets, raised funds to help the needy, assisted in emergencies, and provided care and comfort to the ill and bereaved; and through a grassroots understanding of the Army

In 1940, the active Army numbered 269,000 of whom only 25 percent were married. The advent of World War II rapidly altered this picture. The rapid buildup of U.S defensive forces and their deployment worldwide had a devastating impact on American Family Life. Long separations, lack of communication, meager pay, fear, and reports of casualties brought disruption and insecurity to Army families who shared this experience. Army Emergency Relief (AER) was formed. It was funded by donations from the American public and proceeds of the Irving Berlin Broadway hit “This is

throughout the United States in 1941.

Staffed by military and civilian personnel, this unusual quasi-military organization operated under the supervision of the 1202nd Service Command Unit. In March of 1944,

The expansion of the Barr Memorial Library is the rst major makeover in the library’s 33-year history, and the Fort Knox community could not be more excited to be a part of this change.

The newly added space has unfolded before their eyes and is one of the many changes the library has promised its customers. The completed expansion will provide an additional 7,200 square feet to the already 13,000 square foot building and will provide new features such as a Reading Rain Forrest room for children, a space for teens, and Java Café.

RENEW, RENOVATE,AND REIMAGINE

Many customers have expressed their excitement for the new expansion because it will oer additional public computers, new multimedia resources, and electronic innovations for more ecient customer access. The expansion will also feature a Java Café, which will provide a place for patrons to sit, drink coee or tea, and read.

Library Director Michael Steinmacher envisions growth and continually nds ways to improve Barr Memorial Library as a whole by adding new and updated changes to the library’s Web site, more access to public computers with computer reservation software, high speed commercial Internet access, and a new online database for checking the library’s collection of books and DVDs.

- Photos of the construction, now wrapping up at Barr Memorial Library.

“We want the Library to be a place that is thought of as the center of our Post community. In order for us to accomplish that goal, we have to work hard to increase awareness, expand services, and let both newcomers and longtime residents know what we have to oer,” Steinmacher said. Customers can expect to feel a sense of newness to the renovated building as the “look” will be drastically dierent. New paint, carpet, shelving, and comfortable seating areas are part of the library’s facelift. Additionally, customers will notice wide-screen TVs placed throughout Barr so that patrons can participate in meetings and programs from locations other than the scheduled meeting room. Programs and services will also be dramatically expanded for teens and adults. Plans are underway to debut the nished Library at a large, high prole event in late August.

Barr Memorial Library is a great resource center for Fort Knox. Please be sure to visit and check out the newly renovated space located on 62 W. Spearhead Division. For more information on the library and all of its programs and services, call (502) 624-1232 or check it out online at www.barrlibrary.org.

July Word Search

Benjamin Franklin wanted the turkey to be the national animal, but was outvoted when John Adams and Thomas Jefferson chose the bald eagle.

Over an estimated 150 million hot dogs will be consumed today. That’s roughly 1 dog for every two people in the U.S.

patriotic paraphernalia in relation to the 4th of July is produced in China. Nearly $349 million

decorations, and emblems.

House was in 1801.

The 4th of July was not declared a national holiday until 1941.

John Hancock was the only person to actually sign the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776. The other 55 signers did not sign it until August 2 or even later.

The youngest signer of the Declaration of Independence was 26-year-old Edward Rutledge. The oldest signer was Benjamin Franklin. He was 70. Most of the signers were in their 30s and 40s.

When the United States became a country, there were approximately 2.5 million people living in the country. Today the population is around 309 million.

Bristol, Rhode Island has the oldest, continuous 4th of July celebration dating back to 1785.
