Electric Vehicles (EVs)

Page 24: OPPD’s Sustainability Programnebraska.apwa.net/.../OPPD-APWA-11-6-13-Bywater.pdf · 2013-11-06 · OPPD’s Sustainability Program Christene R. Bywater, P.E. Project Manager - Sustainable

EVs ‐ Energy Security• In 2011, the US imported 45% of the petroleum it consumed. – Transportation was responsible for two‐thirds

• The US is vulnerable to price spikes and supply disruptions

Page 25: OPPD’s Sustainability Programnebraska.apwa.net/.../OPPD-APWA-11-6-13-Bywater.pdf · 2013-11-06 · OPPD’s Sustainability Program Christene R. Bywater, P.E. Project Manager - Sustainable

EVs ‐ Fuel Economy

• Miles per gallon of gas equivalent (MPGe) – 100+ MPGE is common in today’s models

• OPPD Chevy Volt: 57 MPGe

• PHEVs and EVs can reduce fuel cost dramatically because of the relative low cost of electricity to conventional fuel.

Page 26: OPPD’s Sustainability Programnebraska.apwa.net/.../OPPD-APWA-11-6-13-Bywater.pdf · 2013-11-06 · OPPD’s Sustainability Program Christene R. Bywater, P.E. Project Manager - Sustainable

EVs ‐ Infrastructure Availability• PHEVs and EVs have the benefit of flexible fueling

• Limited charging stations (especially in NE)

• Home Charging Station

Page 27: OPPD’s Sustainability Programnebraska.apwa.net/.../OPPD-APWA-11-6-13-Bywater.pdf · 2013-11-06 · OPPD’s Sustainability Program Christene R. Bywater, P.E. Project Manager - Sustainable

EVs ‐ Costs • Costs for fuel is generally lower• Purchase price of cars are significantly higher– Higher costs can be offset by fuel savings and subsidies.

• $2,500 plus $417 for each kWh after that. Up to $7,500

– Nissan LEAF ($28,800), Ford Focus Electric ($35,995), Chevy Volt ($39,995), Tesla S ($69,900)

Page 28: OPPD’s Sustainability Programnebraska.apwa.net/.../OPPD-APWA-11-6-13-Bywater.pdf · 2013-11-06 · OPPD’s Sustainability Program Christene R. Bywater, P.E. Project Manager - Sustainable

EVs ‐ Emissions

• EVs produce zero tailpipe emissions – Life cycle emissions are another story

Page 29: OPPD’s Sustainability Programnebraska.apwa.net/.../OPPD-APWA-11-6-13-Bywater.pdf · 2013-11-06 · OPPD’s Sustainability Program Christene R. Bywater, P.E. Project Manager - Sustainable

Recycling Efforts

In 2012• Paper

– Recycled 40 tons• Wood and hard plastics

– Pallets, tree limbs and broken poles

• Oil filters– Reuse

• Battery and metals– Recycled

• Commingled recycling– Diverted 90 tons from landfill

Last couple of  years• Fly ash

– Recycled 440,000 tons– Reused to make concrete

• Electronics– Recycled 56,000 pounds

• Waste motor oil– Reused to make asphalt

• Federal Subsidy: $2,500‐$7,500 depending on battery capacity. – 16 kWh gets you $7,500

• Gas prices below $4/gallon makes EVs not cost‐competitive • If gas prices crossed $6/gallon and government support held constant EVs would

become cost competitive• Corporate Average Fuel Economy standards mandate 54.5 MPG by 2025 of

conventional vehicles • Between January and May 2013 32,705 full electric and PHEV were sold in the US

compared to 14,226 sold over the same period last year. – Thanks to the Tesla Model S (8,850 cars sold)

• Ford’s Full Electric Focus is $39,995 whereas it’s gas version is $16,995• Premium brands like Tesla Motors seem to be a emerging as the logical launching

point for EVs. • Currently Hybrid Vehicles account for 2% of global light duty vehicles

– PEV are almost negligible. • Navigant forecasts PEV to reach 3% (3.8 Million) of global market share by 2020

with 900,000 of those being in Japan.
