Breaking the Stigma – Tony Hoffman, former professional BMX racer, 2016 Rio Olympics Games BMX coach, and person in longterm recovery

After paroling prison on December 13, 2008, Tony Hoffman started living out his dream, with his addiction behind him. Tony is a former BMX Elite Pro and placed 2nd at the 2016 World Championships in Medellin Colombia in the Masters Pro class. He is a 2016 Rio Olympic Games Coach, with women’s BMX pro, Brooke Crain, in his lineup. His story is full of redemption as he has seen some of the highest highs, and the lowest lows. Tony is the founder and director of The Freewheel Project, a non-profit organization that mentors thousands of youth through action sports: BMX, skateboarding, and after-school programs.

PRESENTER INFORMATIONDr. Ngozi Ezike is the current Director of the Illinois Department of Public Health. She is a board-certified internist and pediatrician who came to the public health department from Cook County Health. Dr. Ezike had served for over 15 years with Cook County promoting the organization’s mission of delivering integrated health services with dignity and respect, regardless of a patient’s ability to pay. She has delivered inpatient care at Stroger Hospital as well as primary and preventive care in community and school-based clinics. As Medical Director for the Austin Health Center, located on the west side of Chicago, she engaged with the community through health initiatives involving obesity, diabetes, and breastfeeding. In her last role with Cook County Health, she served as Medical Director at the Cook County Juvenile Detention Center, the largest single site juvenile detention facility in the country. She was instrumental in creating and implementing the facility’s health policies as the first step of many for coming out of federal receivership and achieving national accreditation for the detention center. Dr. Ezike is a national policy advisor on juvenile correctional health topics and has presented at numerous local and national conferences for medical professionals and youth audiences alike.

Dan Zsido retired as a lieutenant from the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office in 2016, where he commanded the Narcotics Division comprised of the Pinellas Initiative with the CFHIDTA (Central Florida High Intensity Drug Trafficking Areas) Strategic, Interdiction, Tactical, Diversion, and Technical Operations with 50 detectives, eight law enforcement agencies, analysts, and civilian personnel. He has held various assignments and positions during his law enforcement career as an investigator and supervisor in Patrol Operations, Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT), Field Training Operations (FTO), Street Crimes Unit, Community Policing (CPO), Community Education, and the Narcotics Division. He has 15 years of narcotics investigative experience in areas that include policy development, undercover operations in high schools, street drug purchases, drug search warrants, narcotics intelligence, pharmaceutical crimes, and trafficking investigations. In 2009, Mr. Zsido was selected to establish and supervise the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office Strategic Diversion Task Force. During this time, he developed a nationally recognized multi-agency entity that investigated pharmaceutical crimes (i.e. doctor shopping, prescription fraud, drug trafficking organizations, rogue pharmacies, and pill mill criminal enterprises). Mr. Zsido currently serves as the National Education and Training Director with NADDI (National Association of Drug Diversion Investigators) since 2016, NADDI Florida Chapter President from 2013-16 and NADDI active member since 2005. He serves on the board of directors for the Narcotics Overdose Prevention and Education (NOPE) of Pinellas County and the Drug Free America Foundation (DFAF).

Paul Bonucci, MD, MBA, Physician Executive and Clinician, is an Emergency Medicine and Addiction Medicine board-certified physician, with over 12 years of experience as a Medical Director, and a track record of leading teams composed of wide-ranging backgrounds and skillsets including physicians and nursing teams in miliary and civilian hospital environments. He has been an authorized buprenorphine prescriber and treating physician to opiate-dependent patients since 2013. Dr. Bonucci earned his MD degree at Northwestern University and has an MBA from the University of Chicago. He completed his residency at Cook County Hospital. In addition to serving as the Emergency Department Medical Director at Illinois Valley Community Hospital in Peru since 2009, he also founded an urgent care center in Princeton, IL in 2011, which was acquired by Perry Memorial Hospital in 2016.

A Clinical Associate Professor at the University of Illinois-College of Medicine at Urbana-Champaign, Narain Mandhan, MD, FACP, FASAM, is an internist and addictionist at Kirby Medical Group, Monticello, IL, and Rosecrance, Champaign campus, and Medical Director at Kirby Medical Center. He is also affiliated with multiple hospitals, including HSHS St. Mary’s Hospital. He received his medical degree from Sindh Medical College, completed his residency at the University of Illinois, and has been in practice for more than 20 years.

Shea Haury, MS, LCPC, started her career working as a substance abuse counselor for the Impact Incarceration Program in DuQuoin, IL. She joined the Human Service Center in 1999 as a substance abuse counselor and emergency mental health worker. She then worked as the mental health clinical supervisor and later became Clinical Director for nine years. She left Human Service Center in February 2012 to become the Treatment Director for The H Group, who later affiliated with Centerstone. As Clinical Director, she was responsible for program management of the substance use, DUI, mental health, psychiatry, and community support programs. Shea left Centerstone and returned to Human Service Center in October 2016 as the Executive Director of the organization focusing on strategic direction, advocacy, staff development, and finance of the organization.

Katherine O’Hara serves as a Community Solutions Specialist for the USDA Rural Development (RD) Innovation Center. With responsibilities in Illinois, Iowa and Minne-sota, she works to implement rural development priorities, providing technical assistance to help rural communities build capacity, convening partners and stakeholders to strengthen regional and inter-agency partnerships, and leverage limited resources to improve rural quality of life. She has worked for USDA nearly 20 years, beginning her RD career in 2014 and dividing her time between public affairs and community economic development for USDA RD in Illinois. Previously, she facilitated technology transfer and directed external relations for the USDA Agricultural Research Service Federal Laboratory, located in Peoria, IL.

Dr. Sarah Scruggs is the Founder and Executive Director of the Arukah Institute of Healing, located in Princeton, IL. She received her Ph.D. in physiology and biophysics as well as post-doctoral training in functional omics sciences and data science. Dr. Scruggs has 15 years of experience in academic research, with 18 peer-reviewed publications and several digital research products. She worked as Project Scientist for the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), prior to relocating to rural north central Illinois to start the Arukah Institute in 2017. Dr. Scruggs is passionate about holistic health and using complementary health strategies to innovate care and reduce longstanding health disparities in rural America.

Beth King is the Chief Financial Officer for Jersey Community Hospital District. She has been in this role for four years and previously spent 16 years in public accounting, auditing hospitals and health systems. Throughout her career, she has worked with several clients on federal grant awards and while at Jersey Community Hospital, the organization has developed a grant committee and process, which has been successful in obtaining federal grant proceeds to fund its Community Addiction Recovery and Education Services (CARES) program.

Danielle Kirby, M.Ed., MPH, is the Director of the Division of Substance Use Prevention and Recovery at the Illinois Department of Human Services, working since 2016 in the greater Chicago area. Prior to this, she served as Research Associate (2003-2006) and the Adolescent Substance Abuse Treatment Services Manager (2006-2011) at the Division of Alcoholism and Substance Abuse. Since 2011, Ms. Kirby has been both the Substance Abuse Block Grant Coordinator and Director of the Screening, Brief Intervention and Referral to Treatment (SBIRT) Cooperative Agreement. She received her Master’s of Education degree in Secondary Education and Teaching from Northwestern University and her Master’s of Public Health degree in Epidemiology from the University of Illinois at Chicago.
