Personal statement
Choosing the residency program was not a easy choice, as this would be the career I am taking for the rest of my life, I was looking for a specialty that would challenge me to do more and always seek development, a specialty that would give me the satisfaction of knowing I was able to help and make a difference.
Ophthalmology was a tempting choice as it is one of the most competitive programs in the country and only the best doctors would get into it, so it was a place to shine, I was also attracted to it as I found it an always developing field with a new technology everyday and a very active and wide area for research, what also was very interesting about ophthalmology was that as much as the eye is a small organ it was related to every other single specialty, and so the decision was made.
Residency was a different experience from what I imagined, and ophthalmology was even more than what I thought it was, the way the ophthalmologist can touch his patient's life didn't occur to me before and I was even more drawn to the specialty.
I was lucky to be a resident in one of the best hospitals in the country, with an exposure to a variety of ophthalmology subspecialties under the supervision of multiple specialists who carry their knowledge and expertise from all over the world; everyday had a different clinic, different patients, different diseases and different approaches.
Wednesday was my favorite; uveitis day, the most interesting, it had the most variety of patients, each one having a different scenario from the other and every treatment plan tailored to each patient's not only eye but also systemic condition, I enjoyed how the eye was really a window to our whole body not only souls and how the ophthalmologist really has a role in taking care of his patient's over health.
Ocular inflammation physicians are not many in our region and those pathologies are not always simple to treat, especially that they usually need cooperation between different specialties, it was always sad to see a misdiagnosed or mistreated patient losing his vision due to the delay of right management.
