HYDRAULIC SAFETY TRANSPORT SAFETYAlways place all tractor hydraulic controls inneutral before dismounting.Make sure that all components in the hydraulicsystem are kept in good condition and are clean.Relieve pressure before working on hydraulicsystem.Replace any worn, cut, abraded, flattened orcrimped hoses and metal lines.Do not attempt any makeshift repairs to the hy-draulic lines, fittings or hoses by using tape, clamps or cements. The hydraulic system oper-ates under extremely high-pressure. Such repairswill fail suddenly and create a hazardous andunsafe condition.Wear proper hand and eye protection whensearching for high pressure leaks. Use a pieceof cardboard as a backstop instead of hands toisolate and identify a leak.If injured by a concentrated high-pressure streamof hydraulic fluid, seek medical attention imme-diately. Serious infection or toxic reaction candevelop from hydraulic fluid piercing the skinsurface. Before applying pressure to the system, makesure all components are tight and that lines, hosesand couplings are not damaged.Think SAFETY! Work SAFELY!

MAIN FRAME GAUGEWHEEL DAMPERThe main fame front gauge wheels are equippedwith a spring loaded damper to hold the wheelstraight in transport. When transporting units withheavy rear attachments the unit may not have suf-ficient weight on the front gauge wheels to pre-vent oscillation. The spring damper will preventthis oscillation and allow transport at normalspeeds. IMPORTANT - This spring damperwill not function unless the unit is in the fullyraised position. This means the main lift cyl-inders must be fully extended for dampers towork. Failure to raise the unit fully can causetransport stability problems. (See Fig. 1)

WING LIFT CIRCUITRYWing equipped Wil-Rich field cultivators havehydraulic wing lift cylinders to fold the imple-ment for road transport.Wing lift cylinders are equipped with an integralrestrictor on the rod end cylinder port (see fig.3.). This allows the wings to lower at a slowerrate and prevents the wings from falling to fastshould there be some type of hydraulic failure.

Fig. 4 shows a simple two (2) cylinder circuit usedto fold a pair of wings. This system is used onWil-Rich cultivators with a single pair of foldingcylinders.

When lowering the wings, hold the tractor con-trol lever until all cylinders are completely ex-tended. Fully extending the cylinders allows thewings to flex properly in the field. When raising the wings be sure the wing rest isproperly positioned to allow the wings to fold.Fold the main wings until they contact the wingrest.

Units equipped with a folding outer stub wingrequire a sequencing valve in the hydraulic foldcircuitry (Fig. 6).The valve is connected as shown in the hydraulicassembly instructions. Correct assembly is criti-cal for proper operation. The sequencing valve is intended to retard theunfolding of the outer wings until the inner wingshave been completely unfolded.

Fig. 6 4 Cylinder Wing Lift Circuitry w/2 CylindersOuter Wing Circuitry

The sequencing valve should not effect the fold-ing of the inner and outer wings. If the outer wingsstart to unfold before the inner wings have com-pletely folded the valve needs to be adjusted.Loosen the valve adjustment locking nut on thevalve and using a allen wrench, turn the adjustbolt in or clockwise. This will raise the pressureneeded tp sequence the valve. Readjust valve asneeded to ensure complete unfolding of the innerwing before the outer wings unfold. Secure set-ting with the lock nut.Hydraulic system pressure and volume will varybetween tractors and may require occasional re-adjustment of this valve.

The main frame depth on the WIL-RICH QX2

field cultivator is controlled by a pair of 12.6”stroke bypass cylinders. These cylinders are lo-cated at the front corners of the unit, above themain frame lift axles. The cylinders are tied tothe main axle through the main mast tube. Themain mast tube is adjustable and pinned into themain frame gauge wheel. See Fig 7.

The main frame depth is mechanically set by turn-ing the screw collar “TOWARD THE CLEVIS”on the cylinder rod to increase (deeper) the work-ing depth or “AWAY FROM THE CLEVIS” onthe cylinder rod to decrease (shallower) the work-ing depth. An add-on stop collar is provided forsituations where the screw stop collar does notallow a shallow enough setting.

NOTE: Proper field operation is dependentupon the screw collars of the main framelift cylinders being first to contact themechanical stops. If a wing cylinder screwstop collars contacts first the levelingfunction of the system will not operatecorrectly.

NOTE: The cylinder screw stop collars onthe main frame depth control cylindersmust be set equally – failure to do so cantwist the main axle and cause axle fail-ure. Measure the collar locations or countthe number of turns each screw collar isrotated to ensure they are set the same.

Note: The main and wing lift cylindersneed to be positioned with the rod end ofthe cylinder attached to the main framegauge wheel as shown.

The top bypass cylinders have adjustable me-chanical screw collars. These screw collars arerotated on the cylinder rod to vary the retractedlength of the cylinder, providing the means toadjust the working depth of the unit.

LEVELING

The operational leveling of the field cultivatormust be done in a level area of the field. Finalfront to rear and side to side leveling is done atworking depth. Preliminary setting can be com-pleted in the yard to speed up the field settingoperation.

The front to rear level of the main frame is con-trolled by the main axle lift wheels and the mainframe gauge wheels. The front to rear level ofthe wing is controlled by the wing axle lift wheelsand the hydraulic front gauge wheel. Both themain frame and the wings will need to be adjustedcorrectly for proper operation.

The depth control cylinders are hooked in series. Each cylinder is a top bypass cylinder and whenfully extended will pass oil by the piston into thenext cylinder charging the system.Top bypass cylinders will bypass oil when thecylinder is fully extended. This bypass conditionwill exist when the implement is raised to maxi-mum ground clearance. At this time oil will passthrough a 1/16" dia hole and go on to the nextcylinder. See Fig. 9 & 10.Note: This system requires periodic rais-ing of the unit and holding of the tractorvalve to expel air or contaminants.

Proper preliminary and field settings will requirethe use of a measuring device. Once the unit hasbeen properly assembled and hitched to the trac-tor, make certain the hydraulic system as beencharged.

Position the unit on a level area of ground andunfold the wings, checking to ensure that thereare no people or obstruction in the path of thewings.

NOTE: Cycle the main lift hydraulic sys-tem a number of times to remove air fromthe circuit. Holding the hydraulic lever inthe “RAISE” position for a 1-2 minute pe-riod should remove unwanted air.

Remove the stop collars from all cylinders andturn the screw stop collars up to the clevis end ofthe cylinders. Lower the unit so that the mainframe front shovels are 1”–2” above the ground.Measure the frame height from the ground to thetop of the front main frame tube. Compare this tothe distance from the ground to the top of the reartube on the rear bar of the main frame. See Fig11.

Level Main Frame - Front to RearFront to rear main frame level is adjusted by chang-ing the setting of the clevis adjust rod above the mainlift cylinder. See Fig 7. Loosen the jam nut and turnthe threaded clevis adjust rod out of the main masttube. By increasing the length of the mast tube youwill lower the rear of the main frame. To raise the rearof the main frame the main mast tube will need to beshortened, turn the clevis adjust rod into the mast tube.NOTE: If the clevis adjust rod is difficult to turn, lower the unit to the ground to remove the weightfrom the linkage.Repeat this procedure on both sides of the main frame, checking to ensure that the main adjust tubes are thesame relative length. Retighten the jam nuts on theclevis adjust rods when the final settings are reached.

Level Wing Frame – Front to Rear& Side to Side

Depending on the size of the main wing and type orweight of any rear attachments you will need to ad-just the front to rear level of the wings. In some situa-tions either the front gauge wheel or rear axle can holdthe wing at a set depth. For setting purposes, loosenthe nuts at the gage tube adjust bracket at the front ofthe wing tube and the jam nut on the adjuster rod. SeeFig 8. Measure the distance from the ground to top ofthe rear tube at the outer rear corner of the wing. Com-pare this to the distance set at the rear of the mainframe. If the rear of the wing needs to be raised, turnthe adjust rod (9.5) into the wing tube. If the rear ofthe wing needs to be lowered, turn the adjust rod out. When the rear distance on the wing matches the mainframe you can tighten the adjuster rod nut.Measure the distance from the ground to the top ofthe front tube at the outer front corner of the wing.Again compare this to the distance measurement ofthe front tube of the main frame. To raise the front ofthe wing, lengthen the adjust rod at the gage tube ad-just bracket. This will increase the length of the wingtube/adjust bracket assembly and raise the front cor-ner of the wing. Conversely, shorten or decrease theadjust rod setting to lower the front corner of the wing.Follow the same process to adjust the other wing. Thisprocedure should set both the front to rear and side toside level of the unit.

NOTE: The depth of the unit is controlledby the screw stop settings of the mainframe lift cylinders. Depth should bereached when the main lift cylinder screwcollars contact the cylinder end plate. Fol-low the field setting instructions notedabove to set operational depth and level.Once the main frame screw collars are setyou can turn the screw collars on the wingcylinders down to just contact the cylin-der end plates. This provides a backup tomaintain a consistent unit depth if sealsshould fail. Do not use the wing cylinderscrew stop collars to control the unitdepth. Level and wing depth adjustmentsshould be made with the various adjust-ment rods.

On units equipped with single point depthcontrol the setting process is the same.Instead of setting the main frame operat-ing depth with the main lift cylinder screwstop and collars the depth is set with thesingle point. Again, make certain the winglift cylinders stop collars are not contact-ing the end plate before the single pointdepth stop is fully depressed.

FIELD SETTINGS

Even if the unit has been leveled in the yard itshould never be assumed that the unit would op-erate level in the field. Changing field conditions, loading of the shanks and attachments will im-pact the functional level and working of the unit.

Move to the field and stop the unit in a level area.Unfold the wings, making certain that there isadequate room, with no person or obstruction inthe wing fold region. Activate the main lift hy-draulics and remove the transport channel locksfrom the main frame lift cylinders. Make a visualinspection of the unit to ensure that all hardwareis tight, hoses are clear and that the unit is readyfor field operation. Stop collars should have beenremoved for yard adjustment and all screw stopcollars should be turned to the clevis end. Cyclethe hydraulics a couple of times to purge any airfrom the system.

Move forward in the field at a moderate speedand lower the unit into the ground. Stop and mea-sure the depth of operation of the shanks at thefront of the main frame. By use of the screw stopand stop collars on the main frame lift cylinderset the desired depth of the unit. You may need toset a depth, pull forward through the field, stop, check and adjust the depth a number of times.Once the front has been set, measure the rearshank depth and adjust the clevis adjust rod onthe main mast tubes to raise or lower the rear ofthe unit. Once the main frame is level tighten alljam nuts or screw stop thumbscrews to hold theposition.

Raise the unit out of the ground, cycle the mainlift hydraulics and drop the unit back to operat-ing depth. Move to the rear corner of the wingand check the operating depth relative to the mainframe depth. If the wing needs to be raised youneed to shorten the adjust arm by turning the ad-juster rod (9.5) into the adjust arm tube. To lowerthe wing, lengthen the adjust tube by adjustingthe rod out.

Move to the front corner of the wing and checkthe operating depth relative to the main frame. Ifthe front of the wing needs to be raised, lengthenthe wing tube by changing the adjust rod at thegage tube adjust bracket. To lower the front ofthe wing, shorten the wing tube at the gauge tubeadjust bracket.

Follow the same process to adjust the oppositewing. Recheck all depth settings and tighten alladjustment nuts. As conditions change the levelof the unit may need to be altered as required.

Each shank comes fully assembled from the fac-tory. Install the shanks in their proper locationand securely tighten u-bolt nuts.It is recommended that a 47 sweep be used on allshank assemblies.Note: Spring adjust bolt should be tight-ened just enough to crack the paint be-tween spring coils.

The mounting bolts, U-bolts and shank bolts mustall be checked after a few days work and kepttight. The mounting bolts must not be overtightened, but kept tight enough to allow free movement ofthe shank.

Wil-Rich field cultivators are also available withtwin spring or hi-torque shank assemblies. Thetwin spring shank assemblies are recommendedfor heavy duty use.Note: Be sure to maintain adequate tire/shovel clearance on shanks located in oraround the wheel well when machine isfully raised or lowered.

MAINTENANCEPeriodic checks must be made to assure that allnuts and bolts remain securely tightened. Loosehardware is easily bent or lost and can cause ex-cessive wear on parts. Replace any bent or bro-ken bolts as soon as they are discovered.Clean off any dirt or grease that may accumulateon moving parts at regular intervals. This willprevent any abrasive action which could causeexcess or premature wear. Thoroughly inspectthe implement for loose or broken parts and ad-just or replace as necessary. It is important that the implement be regularlylubricated as recommended to obtain the mostefficient operation. Proper lubrication helps pre-vent down time due to excessive wear and increasemachine life.

CYLINDER SHAFTSIf the cylinder shafts are left exposed for any ex-tended period of time, they should be coated withgrease to protect them from rust and corrosion.

AXLE CAPSAll axle caps must be greased once a day with agood quality grease. Lower machine onto theshovel points to relieve pressure on the capswhich will make greasing easier.

HUB AND SPINDLE ASSEMBLIESEach hub and spindle assembly comes with agrease fitting installed in the hub. These must begreased once a week during steady usage. Cau-tion - do not over greaseClean and repack hub and spindle bearings onceeach season.Tighten spindle nut so that there is a slight dragon the wheel when turned by hand.

WALKING TANDEM ASSEMBLIESPeriodically check each walking tandem assem-bly for looseness and tighten spindle nut if thebearings show any evidence of side play.Clean and repack walking tandem assembliesonce each season. The spindle nut should be tightened to allow aheavy drag when assembly is rotated by hand.

HYDRAULICSInspect all hydraulic hoses and fittings for cracksand abrasion at least once a year. Tighten or re-place as needed. When connecting the hoses to the cylinders, tub-ing, or fittings; always use one wrench to pre-vent the hose from twisting and another wrenchto tighten the union. Excessive twisting willshorten the hose life.Do not overtighten hydraulic fittings, excessivetorque may cause them to crack.Care must be taken to prevent twisting whentightening hose connections. Straighten any hosethat appears twisted immediately. A twisted hosecan burst under operating pressure.

STORAGENote: if possible store your cultivator in-side.At the end of a season, clean the implement thor-oughly to remove any trash, soil or dirty greasewhich could hold moisture and cause prematurerusting. Repaint any chipped, bare, or rusted ar-eas to prevent any further deterioration. Inspectthe machine for any worn or broken parts andadjust or replace as required.See your Wil-Rich dealer for any parts and/orservice which may be needed.Thoroughly lubricate all grease fittings at the endof the season's use and again before the first op-eration of the next season. It is advisable, if possible to store larger fieldcultivators with the wings down. With the wingscompletely lowered, the rod end cylinder pins ofthe wing lift cylinders should be removed andcylinders carefully retracted.Avoid possible damage to the hydraulic systemby lowering the machine onto the shanks and re-lieve the pressure on the system. Doing this willalso prevent damage to the tires by removing thefield cultivator's weight.Coat the shovels with grease and place boardsunder the points to prevent the shovels from set-tling into the ground.
